The Maroon Tiger Announces Transition to the Maroon Tiger Student Media Group ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Maroon Tiger announced today that the publication will transition to become a full media group. The Maroon Tiger Student Media Group consists of the New Media, TigerTV, Business, and Editorial Departments. The change in structure introduces an evolving approach to college news reporting and media. All four departments will work collaboratively to cover local and community news and narrate the college experience in the Atlanta University Center and the Greater Atlanta Area. Editor-in-Chief Darren Martin will administrate all four departments with the assistance of Managing Editor Jared Loggins, Business Manager Matthew Guthrie, Executive Producer Brandon James and Editor-at-Large Michael Martin. “College newspapers are not dead” Martin said. “They’re ever-alive. We saw that with the extraordinary creativity of The Maroon Tiger newspaper last year. However, we must also transform into a media group that allows students to access us from any platform whether print or video. Simultaneously, we must provide our staff members with the opportunity to work in a fully- function space where they can learn more than writing or editing, but video shooting and editing, business relations in the media industry, marketing, etc.” Loggins will lead the Editorial Department’s six editors, copy editors, and staff writers in producing a bi-weekly publication of news and commentary. The Editorial Department is oldest branch of The Maroon Tiger dating back to the Maroon Tiger’s founding in 1925 as The Organ of Student Expression. Martin (Michael) will oversee all special projects and magazine projects as Editor-at-large. He will also lead the new media team over the next year. Guthrie will direct the newspaper’s business model and oversee the newspaper’s advertising and public relations efforts. Brandon James is coming aboard as the Executive Producer for Tiger TV. James will be charged with ensuring a continual video production of original content from student staff members to be placed on online platforms such as YouTube and Vimeo. The transition comes less than a year after The Maroon Tiger newspaper took home awards at the Georgia College Press Association’s Annual Conference. The awards include Best Campus Community Service (Opinions and Features), Best Layout (Second Place) and General Excellence (Second Place). “Journalism is no longer a linear field and we must transform to be flexible and capable. We’re preparing our peers and ourselves for the future—now,” Darren Martin said. -The Maroon Tiger Student Media Group For more information: Public Relations: Timothy Tukes [email protected]
