During April 2016 and on the first Saturday of June, the Queen enjoyed many exciting and thrilling events to celebrate her birthday.

The Queen has two birthdays: her actual birthday is on 21st of April and her official birthday is usually celebrated on the second Saturday in June.

One of the important proceedings that takes place to mark this occasion is a lunch service held in honour of her own birthday. The Duke of Edinburgh, and members of the Royal Family attend a National Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul's Cathedral, before The Queen, The Duke, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall host visiting Governors-General for the lunch at Buckingham Palace.

Her majesty’s birthday is marked with many activities. One of these is an event called the trooping of the colour: an exciting, outdoor parade that moves between almighty Buckingham Palace, the giant Mall and the impressive Horse guard’s parade. The Queen also provides the crowds with a public appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

Her majesty usually spends her actual birthday privately, but the occasion is marked publicly by yet another of the never ending supply of endearing goings-on with two gun salutes held at separate locations. There is a mighty 21 gun salute in central London at midday, a thunderous 41 gun salute in Hyde Park, and a spectacular 62 gun salute in the Tower of London.

Last week, a fortunate group of Year 5 and 6 pupils from Beaumont Primary School took part in a once in a life-time, fun-filled enrichment week. The children participated in a variety of thrilling activities that not only provided much entertainment but also gave them a most memorable experience. As their week began, the pupils embarked on the first challenge: creative arts, lead by Mrs Beaumont, the Year 5 teacher. The group closely examined the work of the famous artist Kandinsky and were set to task to create imitations of his prominent work involving colourful concentric circles. Oil pastels were trialled and experimented with to produce art work in the style of the painter.

The next task involved a mouth-watering activity, cooking! The pupils prepared Thai noodles, fruit smoothies with natural ingredients and a hummus dressing. Wearing traditional aprons, the children were made to feel like real chefs and worked tirelessly in the kitchen, guided by the expertise of the head chef- Mrs Beaumont. It was marvellous experience and one to remember!

Cricket was the next event in our week and by the end of the inspiring and exciting session the group felt like skilled professionals. Mrs Malik, who is from Russia, taught us a very appealing lesson about the Russian language. The challenges involved in learning this language were clear from the very start: the learning of the Russian language first involved knowledge of a completely new alphabet making it very different to the British language but after a while the group got the hang of it. The next day, the children were set a challenging and fulfilling maths investigation but to give the children an advantage they were put in partners. One of the most popular parts of the week was singing with Mrs Morrell which everyone participated in. The following day, the class conducted various science experiments with all of the teachers. There were five experiments: making lava lamps; creating a hover craft; designing marshmallow catapults; mastering a rainbow liquid in tube and lastly a challenge to make a plastic glass attach to a piece of cardboard; while upside down and containing water! This was an amazing experience for them and the group felt privileged to be a part of it as they had learnt a lot of intriguing facts. On the final day, they participated in orienteering with Mr Smith; the aim was to find all the well-hidden pieces of written paper before anyone else- it was extremely entertaining. As the week came to an end everyone was disappointed that it was over but they had enjoyed a fantastic week and it was definitely a week to remember for them.

On the afternoon of Thursday 16th June, junior pupils took part in a spectacular competition at

Beaumont Primary school: a mini-marathon. This was the second year that this event was held

for children from local schools.

The schools that entered this exhilarating competition included selected competitors from: the

Hayes, Keston and Kingswood primary schools.

The first event that took place was the year three boys and their supporters cheered like

hyenas while they ran with all their might around the field four times. Following this, the year

three girls took part in their race and were also challenged to compete against each other by

completing four laps of the field. The group was a very fast one, they almost ran out of energy

towards the end and had to take on a steadier pace. Then as they finished the year four boys

went up to the starting point and sprinted around the track an amazing five times. Yunis

Khedraoui a year four pupil from Beaumont Primary school, stated “I like joining in with

everybody else and trying to win for the year four’s boys race.”

The year six boy’s race.

This year’s winners, the team from The Hayes Primary school, were consecutive winners as

they also won there event last year. However, everyone who took part showed excellent

sportsmanship in congratulating the winning team for their efforts and achievements.

Beaumont’s team clasped third place and all the pupils were pleased with their participation

although next year they are looking to get gold!

The event’s organiser, Mr Rosenthal reported: “I was very proud that Beaumont fielded the

large team in the competition. Although we didn’t win, it was evident how much we had

improved since last year. Well done everybody.”

The junior pupils from all schools are really looking forward to another motivating mini-

marathon next year.
