FHWA MDSS RoadShow
The Federal Highway Administration is offering free seminars to those that influence and manage winter road operations. The Roadshow describes the MDSS and its capabilities, providing a level of detail that helps public agencies make more informed decisions about their maintenance investments. There are two versions of the Roadshow, an Executive Briefing and a Shop Session. Come see how MDSS technology is transforming the world of winter maintenance.
The Shop Session will highlight key elements of MDSS, including the use of real-time winter weather information, numerous winter maintenance treatment options, and how MDSS can be used as a training tool. This session is ~3 hours and geared towards transportation managers, maintenance engineers and operators.
The Executive Briefing will focus on deploying MDSS technology and why it can be a smart investment for your winter maintenance program. It covers prospective cost savings that can be achieved, and describes how managers can effectively deploy resources. This session is ~30 minutes and geared towards transportation agency executives.
To schedule and for more information, contact: Ray Murphy, FHWA Resource Center E-mail: [email protected] Phone: 7082833517 or visit http://www.ops.fhwa.dot.gov/weather/seminars/mdss_roadshow/index.htm

Storm Event
Any event that requires a crew to plow or treat all of their roads. Each crew reports the events separately and the statewide average is calculated after removing an equal number of the highest and lowest number of storms reported by all crews.
Activity 191 - Patrolling & Inspecting
Includes all necessary labor, materials, and equipment used for routine inspection of roadway pavements, shoulders, signs, lighting, signals, and other appurtenances. Includes incidental removal of debris, fallen trees or branches, or dead animals when e
Activity 112 - Repairing Surfaces
Includes all necessary labor, equipment, and materials used for pothole patching, deep base repairs when required to repair intermittent potholes or other surface deficiencies. Also includes sand patching done in springtime because of frost heaves. Inc

On behalf of the states involved in the Maintenance Decision Support System Pooled Fund Study, its a pleasure to talk to you today.
Each year, over 1300 people are killed in vehicle crashes on snowy, slushy or icy pavement.
Snow and ice increase road maintenance costs. Annually, State and local agencies spend billions of dollars on snow and ice control operations andBillions on infrastructure repair damage caused by snow and ice.
I am encouraging transportation agencies to consider adding an MDSS to their tool-box and making a smart investment in the future of their Winter Maintenance Program
By deploying an MDSS -potential cost savings can be achieved-managers can more effectively employ resources and-it will improve the consistency of your snow fighting techniques and -material application rates.
