FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Dear Light of Christ Catholic Collaborative, “Can you hear me now?” Do you remember that commercial? That guy with glasses going around from place to place with a phone to his ear saying, “Can you hear me now?... Good.” I’m reminded of that commercial with our readings today. Moses said in the first reading that a prophet is coming - you are to listen to him. It has a Messianic tone to it where we know that Jesus is that ultimate prophet, and more! Today’s psalm says “If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.” In today’s Gospel, Jesus taught them in the synagogue and they listened. The words of Jesus have power and authority. Even the unclean spirits listen to him! But how is it that we can listen to Him? The easiest way is to do what He told the unclean spirit to do: Be Quiet. Be still. Be silent. We live in a very noisy world. And I’m not just talking about actual noise like the ring of the phone, the hum of the TV or radio or the engine of the car. I’m speaking about the other types of noises that fill our lives, minds, and even our hearts: the sounds of anger, mistrust, gossip, fear, impatience, pride, greed and sin. We need to lower the volume of those things so we can hear the word of the Lord. That is the “quiet” the troubled man in the Gospel needed to embrace. And it’s one we need to seek, as well. By lowering the volume of the troublesome things in our lives, we can increase the volume of hearing the Lord and doing His work by being His Disciples in Mission. The Cold and Flu Season is upon us. Upon the recommendation of the Joint Parish Council, we will not be offering the cup with the Precious Blood during Communion – until further notice. Please be cautious if you are not feeling well. You may wish to refrain from shaking hands at the Sign of Peace. If you are a Eucharistic Minister and have symptoms, please find a replacement. If you are experiencing symptoms, please know that your obligation to participate in Mass and receive Holy Communion is lifted. Please use your common sense in this regard. Our Second Grade Students at St. Bridget’s received their First Penance on Saturday. They experienced the healing power of the Lord. The Second Grade Students at Holy Ghost will experience the same next Saturday, February 3. Many of their parents and family members will join them in receiving God’s healing power through for-giveness of sin. Perhaps the Lord is calling you to experi-ence it as well. The Season of Lent is almost upon us. It begins in two weeks. It is a great time to be reconciled with God. 2018 National Catholic Schools Week begins THIS Sunday, January 28 to Saturday, February 3, 2018. The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week 2018 is “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.” St. Bridget School will host an “Open House” this Sunday

morning. And Grade 8 will host a special Catholic Schools Week Mass on Thursday, February 1st at 9:00 a.m. All are welcome. Come and see what St. Bridget School is all about. Pope Francis has asked all Episcopal Conferences across the world to have a “Day” or “Prayer and Penance” in recognition of harm done to children. Cardinal Seán has asked all parishes to offer prayers on the weekend of February 3rd and 4th . The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops created this prayer that I share with you. Please offer this prayer for healing. “God of endless love, ever caring, ever strong, always present, always just: You gave your only Son to save us by his blood on the cross. Gentle Jesus, shepherd of peace, join to your own suffering the pain of all who have been hurt in body, mind, and spirit by those who betrayed the trust placed in them. Hear the cries of our brothers and sisters who have been gravely harmed, and the cries of those who love them. Soothe their restless hearts with hope, steady their shaken spirits with faith. Grant them justice for their cause, enlightened by your truth. Holy Spirit, comforter of hearts, heal your people’s wounds and transform brokenness into wholeness. Grant us the courage and wisdom, humility and grace, to act with justice. Breathe wisdom into our prayers and labors. Grant that all harmed by abuse may find peace in justice. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.” “2018 is gonna be a weird year for Catholics.” Christian couples will celebrate their love in a couple of weeks with smudges of ash on their foreheads. And a prank or two could creep into Easter Egg hunts. This year, Ash Wednesday (a day of universal Fast and Abstinence in the Church) falls on Feb. 14, Valentine's Day. And Easter Sunday is on April 1, also known as April Fools' Day. It's a quirky calendar coincidence that hasn't happened in decades. The last time it happened was in 1956 and the next three times it will happen will be in 2029, 2040 and 2108. The majority of us will only experience this a couple times in our life. So, this year, be kind and don’t tell the kids to search for eggs you didn’t hide. Let us pray for each other. God bless, Father Mahoney
