FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Good Sunday Everyone This week I had a funeral of someone who worked for New England Telephone, you may remember it was also called New England Telephone and Telegraph. In 1879 they merged with Bell telephone even though everyone still called it New England Telephone and Telegraph. In 1899 Bell Telephone became part of AT&T (American Telephone and Telegraph) but still everyone called it New England Telephone. We are part of our Parishes, part of our Collaboratives, and part of the Archdiocese of Boston We have 249 priests serving in 283 parishes and 89 collaboratives – 11 more this year bringing the number of collabora-tives to 100 and 14 will be established in 2021. Hopefully priests do their best in their multi-parish assignments. Some priests refuse to participate, and then when it is time for the priest assignment to end the Archdiocese scrambles and tries to find weekend coverage often times asking neighboring parishes to assist. In some cases, a pastor refusing to participate resigns, and then the parish needs to come into an existing collaborative. I realize for the majority of people religion is like politics, it’s all local but we need to keep an eye on the bigger picture too. People say to me “Father Tom Remember when there were 4 or 5 priests in every parish” of course I do. But people in the Church and priests need to remember the old adage change is inevitable growth is optional. Hopefully we can continue to grow. Last Saturday Father Robert Blaney, Clergy Personnel, and Father Paul Soper, Disciples in Mission Coordinator for the Archdiocese met with the close to 200 Permanent Deacons of our Diocese to discuss and receive their input regarding having Deacon administrators in Parishes. EVEN IN PARISHES THAT HAVE FULL TIME PRIEST PASTORS AND PARHOCIAL VICARS DEACON ADMINISTRATORS WOULD FREE UP THE PRIEST TO BE ABOUT THE SACRAMENTAL AND PRIESTLY WORK HE WAS ORDAINED TO DO. These Deacons would continue their ministry as Deacons in their Collaboratives – Celebrating Baptisms and Weddings and preaching and leading Communion Services. In addition to these rolls they would take on the administrative end of the collaborative pertaining to financial matters, contracts, leading Parish Council and Finance Council etc. and work with the Priest Pastor ensuring that Diocesan mat-ters and concerns are addressed. Please pray for all the Deacons or our diocese who may be being called to this type of ministry and pray as I try to

discern and determine whether our Light of Christ Collaborative may benefit from this program. We are blessed to have the three wonderful and holy Deacons we have, and one of them may be chosen by the Archdiocese, and by myself as your Pastor, to participate in this new program. Going back to New England Telephone – their slogan years ago “reach out and touch someone” let us celebrate that God reaches out and touches us and touches our collaborative community of faith and may we remember to pray for our Faith Family God Bless Father Tom
