Encouraging Participation

All participants need to buy into the process to achieve the education vision. We go to great lengths to keep the stakeholders at the heart of the process, from the inception of ideas, to site visits, to the opening of a new facility.

Consulting Stakeholders

Listening to and consulting with stakeholders allows us to understand the learning needs of students and the practical needs of staff so that a collective vision can be established from the outset.

Sense of Ownership

Stakeholder involvement is key in making a positive, enduring impact as it engenders real feelings of ownership and pride within learning communities. This is why end users remain at the centre of our design approach.

Developing Your Brand

Workshops, interviews and forums can help to focus solutions, ensuring we design and deliver the unique learning environment that reflects your school brand and image thus reinforcing the perception of quality already built by the headmaster and staff.

refreshing design We design attractive and welcoming environments that induce a feel good factor and reflect the growing ambition and spirit of learning.

1.0 SITE APPRAISAL

Two potential sites were identified for the proposed building. Following our site analysis we opted for the Lakeside site (A) The car park site (B) seems to work well in its present use in terms of its connection to Triumph road and 1t also compliments the 'open space· between the Business School and the S1r Colin Campbell building. The site we have chosen presents an opportunity for a building of modest scale to provide visual continuity between the National College and the Business School to complete the lakeside building pavilions.

The logical orientation for a building on Site 'A' is to follow the axis of the Business School and sit parallel with the shore line to the Lake. Locating our building on a North-South axis is also beneficial in maximising day lighting and enhancing the environmental design for the building and allowing views across the adjacent lake. This will also provide the most effective means of naturally ventilating the building utilising the natural prevailing wind direction. The entrance will connect directly onto the main boulevard and the lakeside footpath. with a secondary entrance to the rear directly off the car park. The ex1s ing recently planted trees on the lower portion of the Site 'A' open space would be retained. Clearly the opportunity for open views onto the lake would be promoted in our design and we also feel that open views into the building at Ground Floor level will be important. including a clearly 1dent1fiable entrances/ circulation routes.

The architecture principally addresses the Lakeside aspect whilst also relating to the Boulevard and Amenities building in material reference to the North East corner The concept is based on three simple cubes of modest proportion. forming a horizontal landscape pavilion of buildings. Servicing would be to the East elevation adiacent the access road. A glazed atrium will provide the circulation core and entrances

ensuring a simple and intuitive journey in/ around the building

2.0 SCALE+ MASSING

The scale and massing of the building has been defined by its function and informed by the existing building and Masterplanning principles A three storey building provides the most efficient layouts for accommodating the area requirements for the building.

The lakeside buildings are generally all of 3-4 storeys in height and our closest reference is the three storey high lecture block to the Business School. We have taken the suggestion from the MAKE document that small clusters of buildings could work well.

The design makes a subtle Chinese reference with the notion of cubes/ squares and in the way our building addresses the lake. The ground floor of the larger North wing stands on columns with glazing to the ground floor. This promotes visual interaction with the Confucius institute.
