    If you havenever metT y r o n e

ohnson, then its likely you haveever lived in two places: Balti-

    more, Maryland and Cleveland,ennessee.

Sophomore Breanna Dillondescribes him as very outgoingwhile another young man,Sushant Thapa, declares thatTyrone is the man! But who isthe man? Who is the Tyrone thatwe all think we know well when

all we can really say about him iswhat weve learned onFacebook and whatweve memorized (hesfrom Baltimore)? To be Tyrone Johnson

means a lot of things,so we tried to get insidehis head and under-stand his normal rou-tine this semester, findout where he camefrom and where he

plans on going in life, and offer a glimpse atthe real personality thatsometimes seems hid-den from view. When I first came to

Lee, I did not want to be popular, offersTyrone in his usual, friendly voice, I justwanted to makefriends. He has morethan succeeded in histask. Johnson currently

    has three Facebook

groups about him, with a com- bined total of approximatelyninety members. That is in addi-tion to the 486 friends he haslisted on his profile page.We went to Andrew Pope, crea-

tor and webmaster of one on

Johnsons online followings andasked him about the hype.I think the reason that Tyrone

has such a following, Pope said,is because he has he has givenyou no choice but to be a part ofhis 'following.' It's kind of likewhen you were little and you hadto watch Mighty Morphin PowerRangers because nothing elsewas on T.V. right after school. You were forced to watch it, butsomehow loved it. The pinkranger was hot anyways.Despite the disputed hotness

of the pink power ranger, thequestion remains: why is thisyoung man so persistent aboutmaking new friendships? When I first came [to Lee] I

didnt know anybody. I justwanted to make new friends. Ilike to know people; I like beingin other peoples lives, Johnsonsays with a smile. Its known fact that Johnson has

not had a girlfriend since he

arrived at Lee so we askedwhy. Here is his response:When God [shows me

person he wants me to dattalk to that person. I thinkhas a lot of really cute gidont believe in dating anym

I believe in courtship and riage.Tyrone, like everyone el

    The Facts About TJ

(L to R) Thaddeus Stubblefield, Tyrone Johnson, Mandi Rea

Stephanie Barrios, Andi Draddy, and Kara Hawley pose to

gether in the Deacon Jones Dining Hall.

The story of how Tyrone made it to Lee is

specially interesting. It all began, he tells us,

uring his sophomore year of high school. The

ay before he was scheduled to leave for Win-

rfest 2002 he had been playing basketball

with friends. As he went for a rebound Tyrone

ll backwards and cracked his head.

t seemed as if his trip was cancelled. Hismother, afraid he might have a concussion,

would not let her son go on any trip. But de-

pite her insistence that he stay, Tyrone left the

    ery next day for Winterfest.

Some very important things happened to

yrone on his trip. These were events that

ecame pivotal in the story of who he is today.

fter a few nights of strong sermons and dra-

matic experiences at the alter, Tyrone packed

is bags and headed back home.

On his very first day following his arrival

ome things seemed to take a turn for the

worst. He woke up late for school, missing the

us, and, as he prepared for his day, he heard aoice in the back of his head telling him that it

would be the worst day of his life.

His mother transported him to campus where

verything just seemed to go wrong and every

st he took he failed. After school, Tyrone was

orced to walk home through the snow. It was

uring this time, when he felt positively awful,

hat a debate began to rage inside his head.

Should I still be a Christian, he asked him-

elf. He never wanted to go through such

misery again. But the next moment, one that

would define the remainder of his existence,

e began to sing Christian music as he walked

ome. He continued to sing, even as shouts ofshut up filled the street. After arriving home,

e told his mother he needed to go to revival.

he next day, after reading a card from his

mother, test scores improved again and eve-

ything else just seemed to be right back on

    ack.

By his junior year of high school, Johnson was

eady to look at colleges. He applied to Palm

each but had only talked about Lee in pass-

ng one year earlier. While he was still

earching, he came across a page about Lee in

college book. It was then he made the deci-

    on to apply.

I didnt have money for Lee, Tyrone recalls. He came down on June eighteenth for pre-

egistration but his mother warned him not to

pply until they had found a way to fund the

    ollege education.

I applied to Lee for all the wrong reasons,

yrone states. He says he wanted to get far

way from home. A short time later, he re-

eived notice of his rejection from the institu-

    on.

Things, however, soon turned around. A few

weeks later, the phone rang. Lee University

sked if Tyrone still wanted to come to Lee.

Tyrone quickly filled out one more application

and sent it off to Tennessee.

Three times a week he called Lee, hoping for a

reply, waiting to discover if he had in fact been

chosen. And eventually, the news came- he

    had been accepted to Lee.

One week before school began last semester,

Johnson reaped the benefits of applying forfinancial aid. Thankfully and finally, he had a

    way to pay for college.

I think Tyrone has a very positive outlook on

life which is manifest in his treatment of his

fellow brothers and sisters, Elizabeth Curtis

    says.

We asked Tyrone how he thought other peo-

ple saw him. After jokingly replying with

their eyes, he gave us much more of a mean-

    ingful answer:

People see me as a person who goes around

and talks to a lot of people. I hope that people

see me as a friend, someone who cares about

whats going on in their life. One of our further goals was understanding a

normal day of his life. Tyrone awakens on the

first floor of Medlin Hall at about 8:30AM

every morning and puts on praise and wor-

ship CDs to help him get prepared for the day.

On a normal Tuesday he makes a beeline for

his first class of the day- psychology with Dr.

Hammond at 9:00AM and then heads to

chapel before returning to class. At 11:45AM he

has college writing with Amy White.

Once lunch is over, Tyrone traveled to work at

the Boys and Girls Club. Recently he became a

big brother to two little pals, Darrian (7)

and Mike (9). Then he heads to dinner andworks out in the recreation center before going

back to Medlin for a good nights sleep.

The other days of the week Tyrone enjoys four

more classes: pastoral seminar with Dr. Lom-

bard, New Testament survey with Dr. Sim-

mons, the resident assistant training course

with Cara Rogers, and personal evangelism

    with Dr. Eifler.

With three and a half years left at Lee and

already a popular figure, we wondered not

only what Tyrone plans to do in the future but

what he wanted to be in the past.

Before high school he wanted to be a five-star

general in the military, perhaps the next ColonPowell and eventually the president of the

United States. But times have changed...

I want to be a pastor so I can help out other

people, he says, Besides being called by God

into ministry, I enjoy helping other people.

Finally, we asked Tyrone what needs to be

changed on campus. He offered two bits of

advice: 1) activities need to go on everyday,

and 2) Lee would benefit from a football team.

Tyrone Johnson will continue to be an impor-

tant part of social life at Lee for years to come,

but for now, were just glad to know him....

Last Friday was agood day to party in pajamas, or at leastthat was the idea.

Campus Greek club Theta Delta Kappa

hrew an amazing casual get-togethert 7:00PM in the Paul Conn Student

    Union.

We talked to one of the clubs newestmembers who successfully rushed forhe group last month. Nicholas Helton,

RA for OBannon hall praised theStudent Leadership Council (SLC) forhelping out with the event. The grouphelped to serve guests special subandwiches and scoop bowls of iceream in addition to setting up before-

hand and cleaning up the mess thatwas left afterwards.

There wasnt an overwhelmingrowd there, states Helton, but iturned out much better because of that.

The room was not crowded and any-ne could take part in activities with-ut having to wait. It went well, heaid.

The club set up inflatable Twister, ahuge hit with the college crowd, andlso played limbo. In the back of the

building a huge screen was set up todisplay Loony Toons animation.

It was fun. It was kind of like a Thetahang out day, Carrington Miller

recalls, My favorite part was the trickjumping onto the inflat-able twister.

The event, although notcompletely filled with pajama-clad people, wasdefinitely a success.Multiple flavors of icecream (including choco-late, vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate swirl) werecomplimented by a gi-gantic selection of sweettoppings.

Once the party had endedand students had gone

home to rest, plenty of subsandwiches had been leftover. Theta Delta Kappawas able to put that food togood use the next day at ameeting they held.

Some students complainedthat the event had been poorly advertised. Manydid not even know it was being put on.

Its something they should improveon next year, declared one student

who wished not to be named. But re-gardless of how well-attended it is, weknow next years Pajammy Jam willbe just as memorable, if not more so,than this one.

    Poetry

    Q w o t e d

To my audience of one: 2006By Adam Rodrigues

To the one who'll be watching me,

In the middle of the crowd.

Not caring if I'm the one making funny gestures,

In an effort to make Him proud.

To the one who'll be watching me,

When I'm the one behind the pulpit speaking,

Not as worried about how much I'm saying,

But about Who's heart I'm seeking.

To the one who when all the others leave,

And the once sacred stage is empty,

Will ask me if I've sinned today,

And if my fragile heart is heavy.

When the world's challenges are all around,

And it's many tests come pressing in,

I know Who'll come looking for me,

And He'll come looking from within.

Because no matter how much I may succeed,

Or try and make an impact on this world,

I won't ever by anything of any value,

Without the gaze of whom I hold.

The one who's always watching me,

    The one who's never gone.

He is my Shelter, my Shield, my Guide,

He is my Audience of One.

    CHIMESComposed by Oliver Williams

What if the chime had never beena sign that time had spent, causeless rings, from timely things, lacking story, lacking hint.

A world where time exists quite well, but hours show no change, the chimes would only vaguely tell,of one specific range.

Meaning, hands would never see,as days and weeks sprint by,with every second just as free,as teardrops from an eye.

Finding shadows of our past,a long forgotten age, where chimes did ring, and hours sing,is acting, on another stage.

Going back to find the time, where plans were made before a crime, where sun would shine to warn the moon, where words were said to form a rhyme, where only May preceded June.

Going back to find this time, going back indeed,if only found can be that chime, then order will be freed.

Timely things regain their rings, their chimes, their bells, their tolls, and whistles can begin to sing, when order is controlled.

What if the chime had never been,a sign that time was spent,no scene of yore, but rather more,a reminder to invent.

We were surprised by the results too. Nearly half of Lee students have not read

the entire Bible once in their lives. A smaller amount had at least read the Bible

once and even fewer read it more than that. Females (the lighter shade) proved

to have read the Holy Bible much more than males (complete black).

*This is not a scientific survey. A random sixty students were surveyed for the purpose

    of this study.

Vertical numbers represent the amount of students. The horizontal numbers

represent the number of times the complete Bible has been read.0
