The Knox School is an independent, co-educational and international school catering for students from Pre Prep to Year 12. Our School is located on extensive and attractive grounds in Wantirna South, an eastern suburb of Melbourne, Australia.

The Knox School OffersThe Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), awarded upon successful completion of Years* 11 and 12, is the qualification required to enter Australian tertiary institutions. The VCE is also accepted for tertiary entrance by universities in the UK, USA and Europe.

Year 12 students are assessed using both school coursework and external examinations while Year 11 assessment is based on internal school coursework.

All students at The Knox School undertake a balanced course of study with units selected from each of the following areas of study: English as an Additional Language (EAL), Languages (Mandarin Chinese, French, German), Mathematics (General, Further, Methods and Specialist), Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology), Information Technology, Visual and Creative Arts, Physical Education, Humanities/Business Studies incorporating Business Management, Accounting, Economics and Legal Studies. After appropriate career education and guidance our students are best able to explore their options for further study.

Students are advised to include prerequisite subjects for university entry in their subject selection during studies in the Senior College. Electives enable students to specialise in specific areas of interest.

The Knox School holds a number of comprehensive information evenings for parents, guardians and caregivers of students. The information evenings are supported by individual tertiary, careers and subject counselling. The counselling process continues throughout Senior College.

*Students who successfully complete an equivalent Year 11 program in their home country may qualify for credits in the VCE.

Key Support Staff

International Student Coordinator (ISC)The ISC is the main contact through your entire stay at The Knox School. This person will help with your interview and enrolment process and address any problems you may encounter, both academically and personally. The International Student Coordinator cultivates intercultural relationships amongst students and staff and will liaise with your guardian and homestay to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable stay in Australia.

International Student Enrolment and Administration OfficerThis person will greet you on arrival, will assist in finding a suitable homestay and ensure your medical insurance is up-to-date. They will also ensure each student settles in well.

CounsellorsAll students have access to a psychologist and fully qualified academic, careers and personal counsellors. These counsellors can assist with any stress related to your studies or personal life. Help is always available in:

PEAK Program

English Language Study (ELICOS)Personalised ELICOS At Knox (PEAK)

The Knox School offers a full-time comprehensive intensive English language program (PEAK) which prepares students to join their mainstream classes with the required level of proficiency in English.

Students must achieve 70% or higher in the PEAK examinations to be eligible to commence mainstream courses, subject to their previous academic qualifications and timing of the academic year.

Entry to PEAK is based on students academic reports, an online interview and an English language test if they are offshore. They are required to take The Knox School pre-entry English language, Mathematics and Science tests if they are in Australia.

Enrolment is available for programs ranging from 10 to 50 weeks in either Pre-Intermediate or Intermediate level, depending on the students current English language ability.

All PEAK students are expected to graduate from the language course within 20 weeks.

Our PEAK program is accredited by NEAS

Facilities & Enrichment ProgramsResource Centre (Library)

The School library is open from 8.00am to 5.00pm on Monday to Thursday and 8.00am to 4.00pm on Fridays. A regular Homework Club, supervised by staff able to assist with academic problems, is available five days a week. The computer facilities in the library are available after school.

Multimedia

Students can research, synthesise and then present work in a wide range of subjects. Creating graphics and images and making audio or visual recordings to enhance their multimedia projects is possible in the Schools multimedia production studio.

Music

Our aim is to promote enjoyment through performance and music therefore making it available for all students from Prep to Year 12. An extensive performance program throughout the year enables all students to participate in a wide variety of concerts. Individual and class tuition is provided.

Art

Art provides the opportunity to create visual forms and express individual ideas, perceptions and understandings through a range of visual media. Classes are conducted in painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture and photography.

Co-curricular Activities

International students are encouraged to join the co-curricular activities in the arts, sport, school productions, public speaking and debating.

Cultural Celebrations

All students enjoy the celebration of cultural events at The Knox School including Chinese New Year, Moon Festival and international and local table tennis and basketball matches.

Facilities & Enrichment ProgramsSport

A state of the art indoor stadium provides courts for basketball, volleyball, badminton and netball. Outdoors we have an Olympic size synthetic surface hockey field, extensive playing grounds and carefully maintained change facilities. Tennis facilities close to the campus are available for student use. The sport curriculum encourages students to achieve personal and team goals.

Leadership

International students are represented in all aspects of the School and each year we appoint International Captains who perform leadership roles within the School.

Outdoor Education

Outdoor Education camps are part of the Year 9 and 10 curriculum where students experience a sense of self-achievement as they tackle the challenges of the great outdoors and self-discovery. Students acquire knowledge, values and skills through safe access to adventure activities. The focus of all activities is team building.

Excursions

International Students at all levels will participate in excursions to discover the beautiful city of Melbourne; tours of local scenic areas; restaurants; and bus tours.

Emphasis is placed on the care and supervision of the international student to provide a safe learning and living environment.

In relation to the care arrangements for students under 18 years of age, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) requirement states in part:

Public Interest Criterion 4012A and visa condition 8536 apply to student visa applicants who have not turned 18 years of age and are not AusAID or Defence students (visa subclass 576). Such applicants must either:

reside in Australia with a parent, or a person who has custody of them, or a person nominated by either the parent or the person having custody of them, or

provide evidence that they will be going into care arrangements for their accommodation, support and general welfare approved by the education provider for the course in which they are enrolled.

The Knox School requires all international students enrolled at the School, irrespective of age, to hae a guardian for the duration of their enrolment.

Please note that The Knox School will not act as a care provider. However we are able to refer you to approved agencies providing this service for a fee on a yearly basis until students graduate from The Knox School.

Student Welfare

HomestayIt is a DIBP requirement that all students under 18 years of age live in supervised accommodation approved by their institution. It is The Knox Schools policy that all students remain in a homestay environment during their entire course of study at Knox. The Knox School has a well-established database of carefully selected families who have been hosting our students for many years. All our homestay families have undertaken Working with Children checks. Current homestay guidelines are provided with your prospectus.

Airport Pickup

We can arrange for students to be met at Melbourne airport and taken to the homestay. A charge is made for this service.

Upon Arrival

After students arrive in Melbourne, caregivers/guardians provide assistance to establish a bank account and make contact with the School. The purchase of text books and school uniforms are required prior to commencing class.

Orientation

A few days before the start of Term One and Term Three, orientation sessions are conducted to enable students to meet staff. Orientation provides information about the curriculum and school rules, and a tour of the School helps students become familiar with the campus.

How to Enrol (part 1)

Read the Prospectus carefully. If you have any questions, ask a local representative or speak to the International Student Enrolment and Administration Officer.

Complete as many details as possible on the Overseas Student Application Form for Enrolment in a Course and sign the Application Form where applicable.

Attach copies of your last two years school reports (where available) and any official examination certificates, such as: HKCEE, SRP, SPM, SMU, Cu San (Year 9), Gao Yi (Year 10), Gao Er (Year 11), etc. and evidence of your English Language Proficiency, such as AEAS, IELTS, TOEFL, ACER etc.

Carefully read the Terms and Conditions of Enrolment and Refund Policy contained on the Overseas Student Application Form for Enrolment in a Course.

Fax/email and then mail the original Application Form and copies of your school reports, examination certificates, English test reports to The Knox School for assessment or hand them to the local representative in your country.A copy of the Overseas Student Application Form for Enrolment in a Course is enclosed with this prospectus or may be downloaded from our website: www.knox.vic.edu.au

How to Enrol (part 2)

The Knox School will acknowledge your application promptly.

The Knox School International Student Co-Ordinator and Head of School will organise an online interview.

The Knox School will issue a Letter of Offer if your application is successful. The Knox School and/or your local representative will advise you from that point onwards to complete all formalities required to obtain a student visa.

The first instalment of tuition fees, subject levies, enrolment fee and the Overseas Students Health Charge (OSHC) are payable at the time an enrolment is accepted.* The second and final instalment of the tuition fee and subject levies will be payable in June of the current year.

*Students from Assessment Level 3 and 4 countries must not pay any tuition fees until they have completed Pre Visa Assessment and are advised by DIBP to proceed with their enrolment.

Grievance Policy

Policy for the Resolution of Student Difficulties and GrievancesIn the event of a dispute between an individual student and the School, procedures are in place to help resolve the dispute. A summary of these procedures follows:

Appeals

All appeals are at no cost to the student. Once a grievance process is lodged it will be commenced within ten working days. Any appeal to a decision by the Principal which is taken to a body external to the School will be at minimal or no cost to the student. Enrolment will be maintained by The Knox School while complaints and appeals are in process.

Each party may be accompanied and assisted by a support person at any relevant meetings.

Code of Conduct, Attendances and Discipline

Students are required to comply with the terms and conditions of enrolment and the published rules and code of conduct of the School. Disciplinary procedures will be applied if there is a breach of these rules. All staff are expected to apply the Schools policy and rules fairly and without favour but if a student considers that this has not occurred, the student may refer the matter to either a Tutor or a Head of School or the Vice Principal. If the student is not satisfied with the decision, they may ultimately refer the matter to the Principal for determination. Independent external mediation may also be sought if the matter cannot be resolved within the School.

Service and Academic Programs

In the event of a student complaint concerning the quality of the service or teaching provided by the School, the student will report the matter to a person in a position of authority within the School. The complaint may either be dealt with by that person, or referred to the Vice Principal or Principal for resolution.

Ultimately, the Principal will confer with the parties in dispute, and the decision of the Principal will be final. This decision will be conveyed in writing to the parties. If the student remains dissatisfied with the outcome, they may seek independent external mediation.

Contractual and Financial Issues

Matters relating to the interpretation of the enrolment contract, or the payment or refund of monies, are stated clearly on the contract of enrolment. Any queries relating to fees, levies and supplementary charges payable to the School (or refund) will initially be dealt with by the Finance and Administration staff. If the student is not satisfied with the decision, together with a nominee of the student if the student so chooses, the matter will be referred to the Director of Business Operations of The Knox School Limited for determination. If either the action taken or the outcome does not satisfy the student they may write to the Principal of The Knox School Limited, 220 Burwood Highway, Wantirna South, 3152, Victoria, Australia who will then convey a decision in writing to the student. If the matter remains unresolved the student may take the dispute to Consumer Affairs, Victoria. Website: www.consumer.vic.gov.au
