At Oxford International College we offera highly individual approach toeducation for students seeking analternative to the traditional methods ofschooling. Teaching is based on thetutorial system employed by Oxford andCambridge Universities, with tuitiontaking place on a one-to-one basis, or inmini-groups (maximum 4) combinedwith individual tuition. This allows ourtutors to gear lessons to the particularneeds of each individual student.

The Tutorial System

any students have theireducational needs met byconventional schooling,

involving classes of up to 20 pupils ormore. However, a significant andgrowing number are unable to fulfilltheir academic potential in this way. AtOxford International College we offer ahighly personal approach to learning, which focuses on the individual needs ofeach student.

Many of our students have under-performed at school and transfer to usto complete or retake their A-levelsbefore progressing to university. Othersare aiming to attend one of Britain’s topuniversities, including Oxford andCambridge, and come to us for theadditional intellectual challenge thattheir schools are unable to provide.

Our unique tuition model allows thepace of teaching to be geared exactly tothe student’s needs. Teaching either justone-to-one, or a combination of mini-groups and one-to-one, promotesgreater participation by students, whoare encouraged to venture answers andideas which they might not have had theconfidence to voice in a conventionalclassroom setting. Confidence isessential for learning, and the tutorialsare often highly interactive, withstudents required to present or explainideas back to their tutors.

Our teaching methods are ideal forinternational students who may arrive inthe UK with a diverse range of languageand educational backgrounds. It istherefore extremely difficult, and rarelyeffective, to meet their individual needsin conventional classrooms or largegroups. Many of our internationalstudents have transferred to OxfordInternational College from otherinstitutions where they have beenunsuccessfully taught in groups withBritish and other foreign nationals.

2

M Excellent integration between British andinternational students is achievedthrough social activities and in the dailylife of the College.

To illustrate the effectiveness of ourteaching methods, the graphs belowshow the grade improvements achievedby students who re-sat their A-levelexams after studying at OxfordInternational College for a single 14-weekterm, from September to January.

“Coming to OIC was definitelythe best decision; the tutors wereexcellent and the College wasvery caring, encouraging andsupportive. I'm glad I came here”Natasha

Course Structure

ndividual and mini-group tuition isan effective form of teaching, not leastbecause the student is engaged and

concentrating for the full duration of thetutorial. This is a far cry from the driftingattention that is often to be found inlarge school classes. For this reason ourstudents do not require as many hours ofdirect contact time with their tutor aswould be the case at school.

Standard Programmes

Our standard A-level and GCSEprogrammes offer up to 36 hours oftime-tabled study per week, includingindividual or mini-group tuition, plusmonitored independent study in theCollege study room, in which studentsundertake written work, projects orresearch as prescribed by their tutors, with occasional guidance and assistancefrom College staff as required. Theindependent study periods form a vitalpart of the student’s working routine, and provide excellent preparation for thetype of study that they will meet atuniversity.

Intensive Programmes

We also offer more intensive studyprogrammes which include greatercontact time with our tutors, for thosewho require additional support. Forinstance:

• students who have experienceddisruptions or difficulties in theireducation and need to make up lostground

• students beginning a course later in theacademic year

• students wishing to complete a coursein less than the usual time

• overseas students who have a weakerbackground in the subjects they wish tostudy.

Students may begin with an intensiveprogramme and revert to a standardprogramme later during their studies.

Part-time Programmes

Most of our students enrol on a full-timebasis. Some students, however, needdifferent study patterns - perhaps to fitaround a work experience programme, regular employment, or to supplementtheir study at another school duringevenings or weekends.

With the option of individual tuition wecan offer a totally flexible programme tomeet any specific needs.

Our College staff will always advisestudents, parents or guardians as to themost suitable study programme, following an assessment of eachstudent’s background and academicrequirements.

The A-level (General Certificate ofEducation Advanced Level) is the goldstandard of the British secondaryeducation system. It is the usual andpreferred entrance qualification of allBritish universities. The A-level is nowdivided into two parts: AS (AdvancedSubsidiary) exams are usually taken atthe end of the first year, followed by A2exams at the end of the second. IGCSE &International A-level

These qualifications are availableworldwide and are transferable betweencentres and countries, allowing studentsto continue their home countryeducation in the UK.

Examinations

Oxford International College is aregistered examination centre for all ofthe English examining boards (AQA,Edexcel and OCR), as well asCambridge International Examinations(CIE). This enables students whotransfer to us from other schools tocontinue with the same syllabus thatthey are familiar with.

A-level exams are usually taken inMay/June. All AS and some A2 modulesare also available in January.

GCSE exams are usually taken inMay/June, with some available inNovember.

IGCSE and International A-levelexams can be taken in May/June andOctober/November.

IELTS exams are available once ortwice a month throughout the year.

Two-Year Programme (6 terms)

This is the normal option for studentsjoining Oxford International College tobegin their full-time A-level or GCSEstudies. A-level students normally takethree or four AS subjects in the first year, and three A2s in the second.Academically strong students may takefour A2 subjects. GCSE studentsnormally take 8 to 12 GCSEs over twoyears.

One-Year Programme (3 terms)

This programme is usually taken bystudents wishing to re-take some or all oftheir A-level or GCSE exams. It is idealfor the following types of student:

• A-level students who have completedtheir exams at a previous school andwho wish to re-take some or allmodules in order to improve theiroverall grades

• AS students who have completed theirAS level exams with disappointingresults, but who do not wish to retakethe entire AS year. In this case studentscan transfer to Oxford InternationalCollege with the aim of completing theirAS retakes in January, and the A2exams in the May/June of the same year

• GCSE students who wish to take up tosix subjects, either as re-takes or for thefirst time

In exceptional cases, mature A-levelstudents or students with particularlystrong academic backgrounds may beable to complete both AS and A2examinations in a single year, dependingon the subjects studied. OxfordInternational College will advise suitablestudents of this option, following theirinitial assessment or interview.

18-month Programme (5 terms)

We also offer 18-month A-level andGCSE programmes, beginning inJanuary and ending in June of thefollowing year. This option is suited tostudents who have made a ‘false start’ totheir studies at a previous school, forexample due to the wrong subjectchoices or other difficulties at school. The 18-month programme is also idealfor international students whose highschool exams are taken later in the year, and who are therefore unable to begintheir studies with us in September.

One-term Retake

The one-term A-level retake programmeusually runs from September, withexams in January, but it is also availablefrom January, with exams in May/June.It is primarily for students who havefailed to achieve the required A-levelgrades to gain access to their chosenuniversity course.

Students may retake any combination ofAS and A2 units permitted by theexamination boards. One advantage ofthe one-term retake course is thatstudents can still benefit from up toeight months of a gap year.

“At my previous school, I obtained3 D grades at A-level. After 1 yearat OIC I managed to get ABB. Theideal nature of one-to-one tuitionor teaching in small groups meansstudents are not intimidated to aska question which they might nothave the confidence to ask in alarger classroom situation. Not onlycan I say that I got a goodeducation, I also had a fantastictime as well! Overall, coming toOIC was the best decision I evermade.”

Life Coaching

Achieving excellent academicqualifications for entry to a gooduniversity is the first priority for all ofour students. However, students of allacademic abilities often find themselvesat university lacking some of the basiclife skills to thrive and succeed in thisnew environment.

Oxford International College is one ofthe first, if not the first school or collegein the UK to offer Life Coaching to itsstudents. Coaching is a modern andrapidly growing method for helpingpeople to take greater responsibility fortheir lives, thus improving their ability toachieve their full potential.

The focus on self-awareness andpersonal responsibility makes it effectivefor all situations, whether academic, personal or social. Coaching is differentto training in that it challenges theindividual to find their own answers andsolutions rather than impose or impartinformation from without.

We offer Life Coaching seminars andworkshops, led by professional coacheswho come into the College to work withour students.

For international students whose firstlanguage is not English, we provideclasses in English for Academic Purposes(EAP) leading to the IELTS qualification(see page 4). The classes runweekly throughout the term in the lateafternoon or early evening to minimiseinterference with academic study.Students can take EAP classes until theyhave achieved their required IELTS testscore.

9

We also offer IELTS classes by individualtuition as a ‘stand-alone’ programme forstudents not enrolled at the College onan academic course. This is particularlyuseful for students who require theIELTS qualification quickly, in which caseindividual tuition is a great advantage.IELTS courses are available from one-week to one-term throughout the year.
