Volume 90 Issue 7 Feb 2013 The Knights’ Vision Lions of Virginia District 24-D February Governor’s Message District Governor 24-D J. Stanley Furman My fellow 24D Lions: I'm so proud of all the service you have performed so far this Lions Year, even though all of you may not send in your Achievement Reports, those of you that do are doing great things. You exemplify our motto We Serve. For the clubs who turn in your Achievement Report each month – thank you . For those who don't, please do, it's the only way our team will know what each club is doing. There are 60 clubs in the District and I'm on the way to visiting each of you and so far I'm right on course. But for me to keep up with what you are doing – I need a report! Coming up on the Feb 9 th is our Winter Social where I hope to see many of you. This is a truly social evening and I promise I won't make any speeches, so come and enjoy. It's an evening when we can just be Lions having a good time and enjoying the company of other Lions. Also in the afternoon there is a cabinet meeting and all Lions are invited, as in Lionism everything is open to all Lions. So come and see how the District is run and listen to the Committee reports. Participate in the running of your District. Looking toward to March there will be the final round of Region Meetings. Please try to make the time to come to your Region meeting. This is where we give out a lot of information to the clubs of upcoming events and programs. The Region Meeting is the place to exchange ideas, ask questions and talk to Lions from other clubs and learn what's going on. Region 1 is on March 12 th and Region 3 is on the 6 th . Mark the date on your calendar and make plans to attend. Also in March will be the Region 2 Audible Easter Egg Hunt, to be held on Saturday the 30th of March. While we are marking upcoming things on our calendars, lets mark April 13 th for the Journey for Sight Day to be held in Va. Beach. Leadership Training Day with new member orientation will be held on April 20 th at First Baptist Church in Newport News. A “new” member is one who joined this Lions year. Let us just remember that we are Lions and we are here to serve those less fortunate. We don't do this for glory or self esteem; we do it for the love of helping those in need. We joined because we can do and help more as a group than we can as an individual. So in that vein ask a friend to join us to do even more. Always remember our motto We Serve, for this is who and what we are. YIL DG Stanley

District Blog_____

I do not know where the weeks and months have gone – seems like I just did a blog for the Knights Vision. How many have heard our DG, Lion Stanley use the acronym’s “L-I-O-N-S --- Loving Individuals Offering Needed Service!” Think about this acronym because that is us! We work hard, put many hours into our service projects share fellowship with each other and usually leave exhausted. I believe it is this enthusiasm that brings life and new members into our clubs. None of our clubs in the district are overflowing with members; we have small clubs working as hard as our larger ones. We must invite potential prospects to our service projects. With your support, as I move closer to being your District Governor, I want to continue Lions Stan and Donnie’s philosophy of fun, enthusiasm and warmth back to our District, that is why I have selected the acronym “PAM”, Positive Attitudes Motivate! I recently returned from a pre-planning MD24 Council meeting for out state convention

in Bristol, a trip I will never forget! My husband, Lion Ed, was unable to attend so Lion Joanne Pheris went with me. Due to the snow storm we sat at a total stand still, Interstate 81 was totally closed at mile marker 57.3. The Rural Retreat FVD and EMS had to turn all the south bound traffic around and head us back to the Rural Retreat exit, very interesting and unfortunately we did not get to see how they turned the tractor trailers around.

I leave on February 22nd for the Advanced (Senior) Leadership Institute in Oak Brook, Illinois and if my plane gets in on time will be able to take a tour of LCI. If there is anything I can check on or do for you, please let me know. I look forward to a great turnout at DG Stan’s Winter Social. Lions Pat and Debbie have worked very, very hard on this event and we need to show our support. Until then be safe! Positive Attitudes Motivate

Wow what a month January was.......I had to make a trip to Morgantown, West Virginia for training then 3 days later hit the road in route to Bristol, VA I can truly say that I am having a ball and trying very hard to learn as much as possible to prepare me for July when I am your District Governor. I love seeing all my Lion friends and hearing what wonderful services all the clubs are doing. Remember...this year Lion Stan changed the name of the Governors Ball to the Winter Social but we are still honoring our past District Governors. Please consider coming to this wonderful event. There are so many Past District Governors that deserve to have every one of us show them that we appreciate them. But more than that, ...WE NEED TO HAVE FUN.

We work very very hard helping others and it is time we cut loose a little bit. The Winter Social is for everyone....ALL LIONS... so come on out and join us. Remember to support the Bland contests, Region Meetings, and

Journey for Sight/Audible Easter Egg Hunt coming up in the Spring. You are all wonderful people and never forget that.

Audio/Visual Clinic - A Service to the Peninsula’s Refugees On Saturday, Dec 8, 2012, Warwick United Church of Christ, Newport News (Host) Lion Club, and the Commonwealth Catholic Charities Refugee Office hosted an Audio/Visual Clinic for the many refugees settled in our area. From registration: We were able to see and evaluate

seventy-seven members of the local refugee community that included people from Myanmar, Iraq, Cuba, Nepal and China. To examination: Forty-five of the refugees received complete eye exams from an ophthalmologist Lion Dr. Hauser Weiler (Tappahannock Lions), Lion Dr. John Watters (Thalia Lions) or Dr. Hugh Berckmueller (James River Eye Associates) or optometrist Lion Dr. Pam Lundberg (James City Lions)

To fitting: Ten pairs of glasses were dispensed from stock carried in the Lions Club LAMP trailer and twenty-seven more pairs were placed on order to be given to additional persons who needed them. Opticians were Lion Rose Mary Torres (LaVista Mobile Optical/Newport News Host Lions Club) and Angel Otero. For Hearing: Audiologist & Hearing Aid Specialist David Taylor, MA of Ears to You and Sandy Burkes-Campbell from Maico Audiological Service were the specialists. Five people were identified with cataracts, 3 with probable glaucoma, 1 with a hearing loss and 1 with another medical issue to be referred to appropriate providers for further care. All in all, it was a highly successful event, and we offer our heartfelt thanks to everyone from all of the clubs and agencies who participated, including the Hampton Phoebus Lions, Hampton Mercury Lions, Denbigh Lions, Thalia Lions, and Poquoson Lions, who all provided workers.

Twenty 24-D Lions worked the sight and hearing Van for the Virginia Beach Homeless Connect. A big thanks goes to the following clubs, Virginia Beach Central, Thalia, Great Bridge, Oceana-Lynnhaven-Golden, Kempsville, Woodstock, Princess Anne, Little Creek & Virginia Beach Oceanside. We had three guests work with us and one

prospective member. Ninety Two (92) homeless came thru the van

and Forty five (45) were referred to the eye Doctor. Lions Doris Carawan & Mary Davis did Diabetes screening and those referral were taken care of by the city of Virginia Beach. A very

special thanks goes to Dr John Watters for writing the grant request for assistance for eye exams and glasses from the Charity Foundation of 24-D. The grant committee approved the request. The success of this project was due to each of you giving of your time and talents.
