Bath Spa University is a vibrant and creative environment where staff take great pride in transforming the lives of students through a university experience that is distinctive, challenging and fulfilling. Bath Spa University shares the strengths and characteristics of many of the UK’s excellent universities: an understanding of the need to provide the best possible student experience and career preparation; a commitment to develop innovative and effective teaching and learning; and a mission to contribute to world class research in areas of strength.

However, it is also a university of unique contrasts, offering a blend of heritage and modernity, tradition and innovation, that students and staff find particularly attractive.

Great care is taken to protect its exceptionally beautiful campuses for future generations, and modern facilities blend sympathetically with buildings of historical significance.

Bath Spa is a friendly community of students and staff that values creativity, culture and enterprise. Great emphasis is placed on teaching quality, and the University makes a valuable contribution to the knowledge economy within its areas of expertise. The University also plays a significant role in the cultural, creative and social life of Bath and the South-West region, as well as engaging with 7 partnerships across the globe.

Welcome to Bath Spa University and I wish you many happy memories of your time here.

Professor Christina Slade

Studying in the UK

Page 7: The International Student Guide 2013

British education has a long tradition of quality and excellence and is renowned for being the most outstanding across the globe.Academic quality and rigour are at the heart of UK degrees and UK graduates are highly valued. A UK degree gives you wide scope to develop academically. Independent thought, self-discipline, critical thinking, research and analysis, time and project management, and oral and written communication are just some of the skills that are crucial to success.

By studying in a multi-cultural country, you join an alumni base that has truly changed the world. Heads of state, business gurus and influencers from the creative and cultural industries, all of which are part of the global economy have graduated from UK universities.

No institution can call itself a ‘university’ unless it has been approved by a Royal Charter and the Privy Council. UK universities must adhere to strict criteria assessed by the UK Government’s Quality Assurance Agency (QAA). You are assured of the highest standards at all times.

British degrees may differ from those offered in your home country and it is important to understand the different types of programmes available.

All bachelor degrees at Bath Spa University are three years long and you can gain either a Bachelor of Arts Degree (BA) or Bachelor of Science Degree (BSc). You have the choice of studying either:

• Single Honours (specialise in one subject)

• Joint Honours (study two subjects with equal weighting)

• Combined Honours (Magor in one subject and minor in another)

All postgraduate degrees at Bath Spa University are one year long and are awarded as:-

• Master of Arts (MA)

• Master of Science (MSc)

• Master of Music (MMus)

• Master of Fine Art (MFA)

Bath Spa University’s primary intake is in September of each year. Many courses also offer a February start date.

Bath Spa University has four campuses

• Newton Park - main campus

• Sion Hill - main base for the School of Art and Design

• Corsham Court - specialist Graduate Centre

• Hartham Park - Institute for Education (teacher training).

Newton Park

Newton Park’s history dates back to the 14th century and evidence of this can be seen today in the ‘protected’ Castle building.

Developed in the 1760s for Joseph Langton and set in Capability Brown gardens, Newton Park’s Main House was build as a stately home which is now Grade 1 Listed.

Bath Spa University began leases the site from the Duchy of Cornwall, Prince Charles, and it has been sympathetically transformed into the beautiful parkland estate we see today.

Newton Park is the heart of creativity, culture and enterprise; hosting the Schools of Humanities and Cultural Industries, Society Enterprise and Environment, Music and Performing Arts and the School of Education.

Opening in the spring of 2014, Bath Spa University’s multi-million pound, world class academic building will provide state of the art teaching, learning and social facilities for all students. The academic building includes study space, open access technology and the best digital studio resources in the South West of England.

Sion Hill

The university was founded 160 years ago as the Bath School of Art and has produced some of Britain’s best known artists including Walter Sickert and Howard Hodgkin.

Enjoying a reputation as one of the leading art schools in the country, the Bath School of Art and Design is now the main campus for art students.

This campus is walking distance from the city of Bath and is well equipped with bespoke studios and workshops relevant to our diverse range of creative arts.

Corsham Court

Corsham Court, dating back to the 16th century, is another prestigious, Grade 1 listed stately home. It is now our specialist postgraduate research and study centre for our widely recognised Masters’ Programmes including: MA Creative Writing; MA Songwriting; MA Heritage Management.

Hartham Park

The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) provision within the School of Education will be based at Hartham Park in Corsham in a specialist Institute for Education. The University already has a presence in Wiltshire through our Corsham Court campus and this move expands our already excellent postgraduate provision there.
