Macquarie prides itself on producing all-round graduates who are applied, engaged and who have a global outlook. One of the ways they do this is through the amazing PACE program. Through

PACE, I’ve had the opportunity to complete three internships, each of which has given me vital industry experience. One of these PACE experiences involved volunteering in India with an international youth-led NGO called Restless Development. In India, the organisation’s projects specifically look to empower young people – especially young women in remote communities who lack access to education and sexual health information.

I became aware that Restless Development was looking for a finance intern and realised it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. My role was to participate in the accounting, auditing and assurance measures within the organisation and its regional partners, to ensure that funding that had been provided to schools and women’s programs was actually being spent as intended.

Visiting these schools and hearing stories of young women overcoming cultural barriers to further their education and chase their aspirations was one of the most inspiring and rewarding parts of my PACE experience.

Another great thing about my PACE experience was the opportunity to gain practical experience relevant to my degree, while travelling and living in a very different part of the world. The placement really helped me in developing a stronger understanding of accounting and its methods, which is so important when doing a finance degree.

However, the soft skills of practicing tolerance and understanding, and cross-cultural communication were even more significant. In an age of globalisation, these skills are vital to fully participate in all the world has to offer. PACE really has been indispensable for my career aspirations.

Regarded by the Australian Council of Learned Academies (ACOLA) as the most innovative research pathway model, the Master of Research (MRes) prepares you to complete a PhD in three years – well short of the national average.

PROGRAM STRUCTUREThe two-year course is available in all of Macquarie’s research areas, and, subject to academic approval, allows you to construct a course relevant to your specific interests.

In the first year, you’ll undertake advanced coursework units, while during the second year you’ll specialise in research preparation and focus on a specific research topic. You are required to submit a thesis of 20,000 words for completion.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTSThis course requires a bachelor degree from a recognised institution with a credit average or equivalent (65 per cent) in your final year (or 300-level), although some disciplines may have extra admission requirements.

If you hold an honours or masters degree, you may apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) of up to 32 credit points (the equivalent of Year 1). This may allow you to complete the Master of Research in less than two years. Upon successful completion, you may be eligible to progress to one of Macquarie’s research courses, the Master of Philosophy or the Doctor of Philosophy.

PROGRAM STRUCTUREThe period of candidature is two years, full-time equivalent. You are required to submit a thesis of 50,000 words for completion.

For direct admission into an undergraduate (bachelor) course, you will need one of the following qualifications:

• a recognised high school qualification. See below for a selection of accepted high school qualifications, with indicative ATAR equivalencies.

• a recognised university foundation course. We accept qualifications from most Australian universities, as well as some approved international providers.

• a recognised two- or three-year diploma – equivalent to Australian diploma or advanced diploma levels.

• at least one year of a university degree from a recognised institution – equivalent to Australian bachelor or masters degree.

The scores you have achieved in this qualification will be converted into an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR). Each undergraduate course at Macquarie has a minimum ATAR requirement for entry, which you will find in the following pages. Remember that the ATAR cut-off is intended as a guide only. ATARs change from year to year depending on the applications for each course and the number of places available.

Glossary of termsWHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

ATARThe Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is calculated by the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) and helps universities determine who receives a place in a course. Not to be confused with a mark, it is a score between 0 and 99.95 that ranks you against your peers.

COURSEA course, also called a degree, is the minimum sequence of required study which enables you to qualify for an award. Some courses, such as the Bachelor of Applied Finance, are made up of a specific sequence of units that must be completed in order to graduate. Other courses, such as the Bachelor of Science, allow you to choose from a wide range of majors.

CREDIT POINTOne undergraduate unit of study at Macquarie is worth three credit points. A full-time undergraduate study load is four subjects or 12 credit points per session (eight subjects or 24 credit points per year), with an average three-year degree equivalent to 69 credit points (eg, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Commerce) or 72 credit points (Bachelor of Media). One postgraduate unit of study is four credit points. A full-time study load is four subjects per session, with the average postgraduate degree equivalent to 64 credit points or two years of study.

CRICOSThe Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) is an Australian government register that lists all Australian education providers offering courses to people studying in Australia on student visas and the courses offered.

DOUBLE DEGREEA double degree allows you to study across two complementary, or completely different, areas of study. Double degrees can be completed faster than two consecutive degrees.

GPA

A grade point average (GPA) calculates the overall grade of a student based on units completed at Macquarie.

IELTSThe International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an English language test. IELTS test scores are one form of evidence of English language proficiency accepted by Macquarie.

MAJOR AND SPECIALISATIONMajors (undergraduate) and specialisations (postgraduate) are particular areas of study that you focus on within your course. For example, the Bachelor of Arts offers more than 50 majors and the Master of Commerce offers eight specialisations. Majors and specialisations are made up of structured sequences of units.

MINORMinors are made up of fewer credit points than a major. They allow you to study two complementary, or different areas, that interest you.

PACE

PACE (Professional and Community Engagement) units include internships, special projects and domestic or overseas travel experiences.

POSTGRADUATE A course of academic study higher than a bachelor degree.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL)Your prior learning – including formal, informal and non-formal – can be assessed for admission and credit towards your Macquarie University degree. Remember to ask for RPL when you apply.

SESSIONA session is a period of study, just like a school term. Some universities call them semesters. At Macquarie, we have three sessions: Session 1 runs between February and June, and Session 2 runs between August and November. Session 3 is optional and intensive. It runs between December and February and can fast-track your course.

STUDENT VISA An authorisation permitting people to come to Australia for the primary purpose of studying, as defined by Migration Act 1958.

UNDERGRADUATEA course of academic study for a bachelor degree is regarded as an undergraduate course.

UNITUnits are also known as subjects. Most full-time students take four units – each worth a fixed number of credit points – per session.
