Genaro will be attending Northwest Nazarene University (NNU) in Nampa, Idaho this fall and will be majoring in Nursing. Gem of the Mountains’ members honored Genaro with a dinner at the Hall and presented him with a certificate. Also attending the dinner was Genaro’s mother (Maria) and younger brother (Israel). Josh Engler who is the Educational Specialist for the TRIO Upward Bound program at Caldwell High School also attended, and spoke on the “good choice” we made. Thanks to Mr. Engler, Caldwell High School had 11 students apply for our scholarship. Other distinguished guests were Sisters Jelene Baird and Connie Evans of Melba Rebekah Lodge #105, and Bob Wickham husband of Sister Georgia Wickham. Members of Gem of the Mountains #5 were Brothers Tom Ashley, Bob Covert and George McGaffick, and Sisters Laura Englehart, Georgia Wickham, Sharon McGaffick and Sandie Chandler. Sisters Sandie Chandler and Sharon McGaffick served on the Scholarship Committee. Submitted by Sandie Chandler Bethel Wing Memorial Scholarship Recipient Sharon McGaffick, Genaro Huitrono, and Sandie Chandler Josh Engler Educational Specialist for the TRIO Upward Bound program at Caldwell High School Royal Gem Rebekah Lodge #13 Memorial Day Week White Bird – 5/25/18 – It was “Fly the Flags” day in White Bird, in preparation for Memorial Day. Those of us who went to the White Bird Cemetery placed more than 60 Rebekah and Odd Fellow flags near the headstones of our deceased Sisters and Brothers. On that same day, eleven sisters and a friend of Anita Smith’s gathered together at the White Bird Cemetery to honor her, our dear departed sister. A memorial speech was read, a prayer was said, and then each of us placed a flower in a vase for Sister Anita. A picture was taken to commemorate this event. The following Monday, 5-28-18, some of us also took part in the American Legion Ceremony at the cemetery on Memorial Day. Afterwards we adjourned to the American Legion Veteran’s Park in downtown White Bird for the presentation of six Quilts of Honor and Quilts of Valor. Following the award ceremony, the Rebekahs provided and served “Pie in the Park” for all present. It has become a popular event in our little town, and any and all donations go to the American Legion. It is a way for us to say Thank You to our community for their continued support.
