BENTLEYGetting your license won’t change Chris’ mind.

ASHERIt’s time to finally get your face out of those models and get you into a real plane.

BENTLEYIt’s not me you have to convince. Chris...

Chris joins the group. Bentley grins and Asher SLAPS HIS SHOULDER.

CHRISCan you give us a second?

ASHERSee you when I see you

Asher waves at Bentley and leaves in a CAR. Bentley walks back to the house, followed by Chris.

CHRISI was going down to-

Bentley crosses in front of her and climbs the steps to the porch.

CHRIS (CONT’D)Bentley? Bentley!

Bentley pauses, then TURNS. Chris’s face brightens, then falls as his gaze continues past her. Lights reflect in the door behind them.

DETECTIVE WALLACEBentley Thompson?

Bentley nods.

DETECTIVE WALLACESir, I’m Detective Wallace and this is my partner, Detective Reed.

CHRISSeems a bit excessive.

DETECTIVE WALLACESir, I’m very sorry to inform you that there has been an accident-in which your wife, Chris Thompson, did not survive.

BENTLEY’s and CHRIS’ faces freeze in shock.

DETECTIVE WALLACE (O.S.) (CONT’D) I am very sorry for your loss.

Chris bursts into laughter.

CHRISThis is ridiculous. I’m still here. I was-I was out of breath when I was running, I was-

GEORGEYou’re still the same. Just-corporally challenged.

CHRISSo still outta shape

GEORGEAnd still able to affect some of the living.

CHRIS(brightens)

How?

GEORGEA part of Ethel died when I did, and I never gave her the chance to get it back.

He looks at Ethel and Bentley. Ethel blows her nose loudly.

GEORGEI’m George.

Chris points to Ethel and then Bentley.

GEORGE (CONT’D)If you stay with Bentley-you take away his chance to move on.

Chris compares George to the picture.

GEORGE (CONT’D)If you leave he may still never recover. But-at least he’ll have the chance.

(pauses)It takes some time to adjust, but once you do, you can’t leave.

Chris TILTS her head. George looks away.

CHRISAnd we are-

Chris looks back at the picture.

ERIC (early 20s) gestures at a wall full of COFFIN SAMPLES.

ERICAs you’ll see, the champagne rose color highlights the etchings on the corner.

Bentley stares at the sample coffin, Asher and Chris behind him. A ROOMBA whirs, spins around, and heads toward the group. Eric guides the group to a HALF OPEN COFFIN with a CLEARANCE SIGN.

ERIC (CONT’D)This only coffin we offer in-house is this 2017 model-

The Roomba GLIDES by CHRIS’ side, stopping when she does. Chris stares, then steps away. The Roomba FOLLOWS her.

ERIC (O.S.) (CONT’D)A top-seller with our middle-aged demographic.

He motions inside the coffin. Chris leads the Roomba to Bentley.

ERIC (CONT’D)It doesn’t have the additional padding some newer versions do, but it was a top seller in its day-

Bentley leans over the HALF OPEN COFFIN and TRIPS on the Roomba in front of him, catching himself on the coffin. The open lid SNAPS SHUT. Eric SQUEAKS.

ASHERWooooooooooooo-

Eric INSPECTS the coffin. Bentley remains unfazed beside a shocked Chris. Asher covers his mouth to silence his laughter.

TV One Sheet for The White Roses

Logline

Two half-siblings start a “program” with Kiara, a lawyer, for their high school classmates with family dramas.

Synopsis

Season one starts with half-siblings Grayson and Aaliyah “Liyah.” The two have lived in the foster care system for three years, and are placed in their current foster family, the Burges. They go to the same school as they did at their previous foster home, where they stayed for a year until the family accused them of stealing. Their younger brother, Jace, who has a hearing disorder, is not placed with the Burges. He stays with another family who gives him only limited contact with his siblings. The kids’ mother, Marie, tries to reach an appeal with the court to get out of prison. She was falsely charged for murdering Lewis, the father of Grayson and Jace, who had committed suicide.

The cast is made up of Grayson, 15, who starts his Freshman year at Truman High because he was held back a year. He feels very responsible for his family dynamics, taking care of Liyah and staying in contact with Jace. He is also considering applying for emancipation from the foster system when he turns 17. However, he has not told Liyah, as he may not be allowed to take her with him. Liyah, who is 13, uses all her experiences to shape herself and is very mature for her age. She has skipped a grade and is also going into her Freshman year. She is experiencing the many difficulties associated with entering teendom and discovering her mixed female identity alone. Kiara is of some help, but Liyah has no one who truly understands her complete racial identity. Kiara has become a huge support system for the siblings. She is a previous foster child the kids connected with in the Foster Club, which is the national organization of foster kids. Marie is dealing with forgiving herself and trying to put her life back together.

The siblings try to help Liyah’s friend, Chelsea, whose parents are divorced and fighting for her custody. While the court will probably lean in favor of her mother, her dad is more responsible and a better caregiver. Grayson and Liyah enlist the help of Kiara, who just finished her law degree. After successfully helping Chelsea, Brian hears of their achievement and comes for their aid. He is adopted but has no known blood family. The two start an unofficial “program” to help people in their high school with family issues.

Midway through the season, Jace stops contacting the siblings for no apparent reason, and the two work with Kiara to try to learn what happened. Liyah and Grayson unite Brian with a second cousin. Meanwhile, they learn that their own family has fractured as Jace has run away from his foster home and is nowhere to be found.

At the end of the season, Marie is granted her appeal and released from prison. Her next goal is to get her kids back, but she is accused by the court of previous neglect. Grayson and Aaliyah juggle court meetings for their mother while helping Ardeth, who has caught one of his parent’s cheating and does not know what to do. During the court process, Grayson and Liyah find out that they are not actually related. Marie is the mother of Liyah and Jace, and Jace and Grayson’s father was Lewis, but Aaliyah and Grayson are not family by blood. Ardeth tells his father about his mother cheating and his parents divorce. The season ends with the Grayson and Liyah deciding to keep their service available and to find Jace.

The White Roses shows the definition and strength of family in atypical ways throughout the series. Grayson and Aaliyah face problems experienced by average high schoolers but are able to work with Kiara to help their friends in extraordinary ways. The group does not have superpowers, just big hearts and lots of experience. They are able to take their resources and knowledge to make real changes in their classmates’ lives.

Season one is the establishment of the program. In season two the program is discovered by authorities who attempt to shut it down. During season three, Grayson, Liyah, and Kiara realize the struggle of learning to let others work through their own problems. The program is reestablished in season four and starts to spread throughout the United States in season five.

Proposal for a Short Documentary

Production Team

-Producer- Hannah Goebel: A well-known producer at Taylor University who has produced two Envision Film Festivals as well as a number of travel videos. -Director- Patrick Linehan: An experienced director with a background in live-production and client-based work with a passion for storytelling. -Director of Photography/Assistant Editor- Niko Hays: A creative cinematographer who has worked on several non-profit, client, and documentary projects including an award-winning corporate video and a feature-length documentary. -Editor- Rebekah Hardwicke: An Avid certified editor who has worked as the head editor on various corporate videos and narrative projects.

Motivation

As our team reached out to various subjects we searched for an intriguing story that would be both visually fascinating as well as character driven. Our team believes the characters will provide an insight into a world many people do not understand or even know about. Our film will give people a chance to see the behind the scenes of the effort put into costume making including the fun activities of conventions. We are thrilled to have a subject that is innovative and strives to give back to the community through charity fundraising and visits to hospitals. We believe the story will be both entertaining and educational.

Topic

A group from northern Indiana meets together to create amazing life like Star Wars costumes that they showcase at conventions while also running charity events and visiting children at hospitals in costume.

Main Characters

Our main character is Caroline Nurkkala, a resident of Upland, Indiana and the creator of an intricate Mandalorian costume molded after its Star Wars counterpart. Caroline Nurkkala, age 23, has been designing costumes replicating Star Wars characters since 2008. She is part of the Mandalorian Mercs Costume Club, a group

who meets to work on their costumes and occasionally participate in conventions together.

Our next character is Tim Hutcheson. He is the founder of the Mandalorian Mercenaries, which began in 2004. He discovered fans with similar interests when attending Atlanta’s DragonCon in 2006, which led to the founding of the Mandalorian Mercs Costume Club.

Another character is Nurkkala’s group, Taakure Clan. Within the group are many different personalities and talents, which lead to different costumes and characters that are assembled. The crew plans to follow a few different characters that spark interest and watch them interact with each other at group meetings and at the convections.

Essential Conflict

Conflict can come in many forms during this documentary. One form is friction among Mercenary members during their time at SHAK. Tensions are high as they try to get their costumes done in time for a convention or hospital visit. For example, a costume may break or not cooperate. Conflict can also come during the conventions if a booth is not set up properly or a Mercenary member is late. The tension between the many groups at the convention is high. While they would not say that they are rivals, they are competing for the convention goers attention, specifically for charity fundraising. Conflict arises in the hospital if the group did not meet their fundraising goal or their visits with the children do not go as planned.

Resolution

The resolution consists of a thought-provoking statement or scene of what the Mercenary group and Caroline Nurkkala have achieved. It is an awareness of what the group is about and why they have added cosplay to their daily lives. The film closes with hope: hope in the group’s mission and in fulfillment of community for the group participants.

Audience

Our key audience is any Star Wars fan who loves the ins and outs of the Star Wars universe. We hope to showcase another outlet for people who love Star Wars. We intend for the audience to have fun and be excited. We also hope to reach other audience members who are intrigued by cosplay and superhero/comic conventions. For audience members who do not have knowledge of cosplay or conventions, we hope to give them a visually appealing film that educates and entertains them. Some biases may result if the character costumes we feature are not liked by some audience members who find different characters to be more to their liking. We recognize that not everyone is interested in cosplay or even superheroes and people can form biases towards others’ characters based on what their cosplay characters do or say.

Style

The visual style of the film will reflect the vibrancy and energy associated with the conventions we will be filming. The interviews with Caroline should portray her creativity and craftsmanship. We will film this with two cameras: one wider shot showing her costume and the workshop in the background, the other a closer shot showing her passion for the craft. We anticipate using four lights for the interview: a key light, a fill light, a backlight, and a light for the background. Shot techniques will vary based on the location and the main character’s actions. At locations like the conventions, we will use a Sony FS5 to film handheld to make sure all the action is covered. In addition, we will use a Sony FS7 to film b-roll. The workshop is more relaxed so we will use less handheld footage. Overall the blend of handheld and more cinematic camera techniques should result in a relatively visually refined look.

We will edit the film using the non-linear editing system Avid Media Composer with footage on the NEXIS server. While we are focusing on a small number of characters, we intend to include cutaway footage of the group as a whole to show the family atmosphere.

Logistics

Our director has direct contact with Nurkkala from his employment at Starbucks. We expect full communication between the team, Nurkkala, and the other Mercenaries. The four to five locations we will film at during production are all relatively close to Taylor University, the longest drive being two and a half hours. While at the conventions we anticipate good communication with the convention center directors

so that we can create a positive environment for the attendees and the participants. We do not foresee a problem scheduling shoots at the conventions, workshop, and interviews due to our communication with Caroline. We will be able to schedule the appropriate equipment with the help of Joshua Taylor. This team has experienced great communication with the other members and will produce an excellent short documentary through the combination of their various strengths.

Budget

For this short documentary, the current budget is $600.00. The projected spending of this money is as follows:

- Gas: $80.00 - Meals: $120.00 - Entrance to Conventions: $110.00 - Music/Graphics: $200.00 - Contingency: $90.00

An additional $2,500.00 has been proposed for this documentary. This money will allow for a sound engineer and a color corrector to be hired. A sound engineer would record the audio and ensure proper levels during production, as well as sweetening the tracks during post-production. A color corrector would allow the editor to focus her time on creating the best possible sequences and storyline and allow the visuals of the documentary to look the best they can be, thus adding to the production value.

Cos Wars: More Than A Hobby

Act I

Iconic shots from the Star Wars movies are intermixed with shots of Caroline Nurkkala and Scott Moss putting on their costumes. They both talk about why Star Wars has a universal appeal, and the scene ends as they put on their helmets.

Scott is shown at the Indy Marathon as he cheers people on and talks about how the mission of the 501st is to make people smile and help them with problems they may have.

We go to FantastiCon, where Caroline mingles with other Mandalorian Mercs and people at the convention as she talks about the Mercs’ different costumes.

Act II

Caroline talks about how being in the Mercs connects many things that she enjoys, such as art and sci-fi. She is shown drawing and pictures of her are shown. She explains what the Mandalorian Mercs are as associated clips from Star Wars are played. She then explains how she is adjusting her kit, or costume, as she is shown hammering sheet metal on an anvil.

Scott talks about his job and his family as pictures and videos are shown. He then talks about how he is new to cosplay and joined when he saw stormtroopers on TV. He talks about how he always wanted to be a stormtrooper and liked the idea of helping others.

We cut back to FantastiCon where Caroline explains about how she likes being in a costume because she used to be shy and in her costume, she can be someone else. We cut to Scott at the Marathon, who talks about enjoying costuming with his two sons, who are with him.

Act III

We go to the Making Strides for Cancer walk, where Scott mingles with the public along with a few Rebel Legion and 501st members. We follow him around the event as he talks to survivors and their families. Scott explains that he cosplays for both

adults and children who are really sick and need a smile. Scott and the other cosplayers line up to high-five the attendees as they begin their walk. Scott talks about a previous troop he had with adults that were on their death beds and comments that sometimes he is glad he has a helmet on.

We cut to the SHAK Makerspace, where Caroline explains that the Mercs throw armor parties for upcoming recruits. Caroline works on her new helmet and explains how it took her four years to make her first costume. People from the public come to the SHAK to meet the Mercs including a father and his two sons who try on the Mercs’ armor. She and the other Mandalorian Mercs help another father and son make a set of chest pieces to get their kits started.

Caroline talks about how the Mercs are a family that chooses to be together, and how she can explore different parts of her personality. Scott talks about being himself in costume and how although his wife says is a narcissist, he thinks he is a narcissist with a heart.

We close with additional iconic shots of the Star Wars with Scott and Caroline concluding about its universal appeal. The two take off their helmets and credits are played.

Why we are telling this story

The theme of this documentary revolves around the community and family that forms when a group of people who are passionate about one thing comes together. In this case, a group of people who are passionate about Star Wars came together and decided to also make a positive impact on the world through charity while getting to indulge in other hobbies they might have.

Our team wanted to tell this story from a more personal point of view as opposed to a general point of view. Sharing the intricacies of cosplay through the eyes of two main characters we can relate to is a way we can invite our audience into a world they might not know a lot about. Personally, we wanted to tell a story about a group of people that might not be well known or understood. Hopefully by the end of this short documentary people will be able to appreciate the world of cosplay and understand why people choose to do it.
