What a wet month we have had here in the Midwest! I know it hasn’t been that way for everyone, but we have had way too many outside shows canceled due to rain and mud this month. On a positive note, our second cutting of hay

should be a good one. Our NBHA State show is coming up (thank God it is held in a covered arena) and I am sure there are plenty of people that are wanting to get some runs in before State Shows and the NBHA Youth World this month. Good luck to all who are competing.

For those who have not yet heard, I’ll say it again.....We are happy to announce our new relationship with BarrelHorseWorld.com! That’s right! You will now be able to take BarrelHorseWorld.com along with you on the truck seat. For those of you who are not familiar with BarrelHorseWorld.com, it is one of the most visited and most respected

web sites in the barrel racing world. For our barrel racing friends, this means more interviews with trainers, more event coverage, more classified ads and more events. For our Quarter Horse racing friends, this gives a broader perspective at the potential for a second career for race horses (as well as a whole new market of potential new owners!) We are very excited about where this avenue might lead.

We were happy to be featured guests on BarrelHorseWorld.com last month. We got lots of emails with great suggestions and feedback. We also had hundreds take us up on our offer of a First issue FREE. We hope that the ones who requested an issue liked what they saw and have already submitted a subscription form.

In this month’s issue you will find results from the BBR Finals, an interview with Jesse Wagner (thanks to our teen writer, Clint) and some Recollections with the Dahlens of Iowa. Jan (and Mike) tell us about how they got started in barrel racing and about some of the great horses, friends and memories. And I love what Jan has to say has meant the most to her.....(Oh, you’ll just have to read it to see what I’m talking about.) You will also find the usual goodies: QHRAI News, What’s the Scoop.....and Bella is tired of the rain too...she’s inventing new ways to entertain herself until the horse shows resume.

As far as things go here at the ranch, we have done a lot of conditioning around the walker. (We have a sand circle around the horse-walker and that has been the only dry place to ride most recently.) I have complained about the rainy wet weather......but I do realize and remind myself that without rain....there would be no rainbows. Without rain, there would be no flowers, no gardens growing fresh tomatoes for me to cut up and eat with my bologna sandwich. Without rain there wouldn’t be mud puddles for my kids to ride their bicycles (or their horses) through -splashing all the way- or mud holes where shoes have been known to disappear. And most importantly, without rain, we wouldn’t appreciate the sun near as much when it finally decides to show itself.

That being said....I hope this month brings you rainbows and flowers and fresh tomatoes....and I also hope it brings some sunshine and some pretty weekend weather for horse-shows.

Until next month, enjoy a bologna sandwich for me, do some mud-puddle splashing with the kids ......and always be sure to count your blessings on horseback...

God Bless and ride safe,Christa Conway

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

June’s Horseshoe Hunt found our horseshoe on our “NPBA Page.” With the added incentive of a FREE prize...., we DID get a winner! Nina Heightchew of Kentucky was the first to contact us with the correct location of our Horseshoe. She chose

to extend her subscription for one year. This month’s horseshoe hunt will offer the same incentive....the first one to contact us with the location of the Horseshoe in this issue will win a prize....maybe a subscription, maybe a “Horsey-T” or a “Horsey-Hat.” We’ll see what we can come up with. Call or email when you find it and we’ll mention your name in our August 2010 issue and send you a prize if you are the first to contact us! “Happy horseshoe hunting!” (Find the horseshoe to the left somewhere in thi issue and email or call us with it’s location! [email protected])

World’s Greatest Shootout set for inaugural Battle in the Saddle

Amarillo, Texas – State Fair Park and the American Quarter Horse Association are pleased to announce an exciting new addition to Battle in the Saddle, the country’s newest equine event. The National Reined Cow Horse Association will host the World’s Greatest Horseman Shootout, a unique competition for exhibitors to experience the thrill of a prestigious competition that will award one talented competitor a paid entry into the 2011 World’s Greatest Horseman competition.

The World’s Greatest Horseman Shootout will take place during the Battle in the Saddle competition at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City July 5-10.

World’s Greatest Horseman is a yearly contest that has captured the imagination of the horse world since its inception in 1999. Exhibitors compete on the same horse, with the same bridle - in herd work, rein work, steer stopping and cow work over a series of days for a chance to make the top 10 finals. On finals day, each horse and rider show in all four events in one day to see who will win the title of World’s Greatest Horseman and join the horse show world’s most elite list of winners.

World’s Greatest Shootout…How It Works:Associations participating in Battle in the Saddle will be given the opportunity to enter two, single-horse, single-rider entries into World’s Greatest Shootout. Those associations’ representatives cannot have previously won more than $500 in NRCHA competition. Associations that can nominate two entries are American Quarter Horse Association, National Cutting Horse Association, National Reining Horse Association and American Rope Horse Futurities Association. The entry fees for World’s Greatest Shootout must be paid by the nominating associations. In all, eight competitors will battle it out for bragging rights and the coveted free entry into World’s Greatest Horseman.

Kris Wilson and Craig Haythorn will represent AQHA in the World’s Greatest Horseman Shootout. Representing NRHA will be Doug Milholland and Todd Wright. Riding for ARHFA will be J.D. Yates and Clay Logan. NCHA will be represented in the World’s Greatest Horseman Shootout by Matt Budge and Chris Benedict.

Those eight competitors will compete in a “class within a class” in herd work, rein work, steer stopping and cow work. Exhibitors will be allowed to use only one horse and one bridle in each of those events.

NewsTragedy Strikes Hamilton, OH

Family on May 22, 2010

Letter regarding Schwab & Collier Benefit Auction This letter is to request support for a Hamilton, Ohio family struck by tragedy on Saturday, May 22, 2010. This tragedy has left the family with much to be concerned about and we would like to ease their concerns by providing some financial assistance to them.

.....Five members of the Schwab/Collier family, two horses, and a dog were traveling together to a horse show when a left front tire blew and sent the truck and trailer careening into a hilly tree filled highway median.

Cindy Schwab and 14 year old son, Trey Schwab, were sent via life flight to University Hospital and Children’s Hospital respectively and remain hospitalized at the time of this issue. They both have a long road to recovery. Luckily Paul Schwab II, Tena Collier and her four year old son, Trevor, received only non-life threatening injuries.

The beloved family horses, Bar Dee Boy (aka “Scooby”) and MF Poco Red Wrangler (aka “Popeye”) were transported to Lebanon Equine Clinic. Scooby remains hospitalized and is expected to recover, but unfortunately Popeye did not survive through surgery. The truck and trailer are a total loss.

This family has been long standing members of the rodeo, barrel racing and AQHA communities. Tena Collier is a former Miss Rodeo Ohio and is a long time rodeo and barrel racing competitor who has touched so many lives with her work with 4H and youth rodeo. Her brother, Trey Schwab, can be found in the AQHA youth standings

along with his great horse, Scooby. Paul Schwab is a Youth Director for the Ohio Quarter Horse Association. He and his wife, Cindy, have supported their children’s passion of horses.

We are asking for individuals and businesses to offer financial support for this family’s medical and veterinary bills. Financial support can be given by donating money, goods or service vouchers. All goods or service vouchers will be auctioned online and turned into financial support. A bank account has been established to hold the funds for the family. A website has been created to aid in the fund-raising effort and to serve as a portal for the online auction and method for those concerned to receive updates. You may visit the website at www.SchwabCollierBenefit.com. Goods or service vouchers may be mailed to the address below I/C/O Nadine Gibbons. Cash donations may be made by contacting Nadine at 937-416-4278 or [email protected].

Let’s band together to help this ever-giving family in their time of need. If you have questions, concerns or further ideas to help this effort, please feel free to contact Nadine or leave comments on the website. Your support and prayers for this family are much appreciated. Thank you in advance and many blessings to you and yours.

Sincerely,Friends and Fellow Horsemen and Women of the Schwab/Collier Family

A Quarter Horse Lover’s Guide to the 2010 Alltech FEI World

Equestrian Games

America’s Horse, May 25, 2010 – The world is coming to Lexington, Kentucky, this fall – the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, that is, along with all the fanfare that accompanies the year’s largest single sporting event in the United States. And the even cooler thing? AQHA and American Quarter Horses are front and center on this world stage.

AQHA is the official breed sponsor of reining, one of the eight international disciplines spotlighted at the games, September 25 – October 10. But even if you’re not a competitor or a diehard reining fan, you can still appreciate the World’s Fair atmosphere that surrounds the games. Its Equine Village will include nearly 150 educational booths and demonstrations by top-notch clinicians, equine entertainers, breed organizations and more. Its trade show will offer not-to-be-missed shopping, and there will be amazing options for wining and dining.

In an area just inside the main entry, AQHA and alliance partner the National Reining Horse Association will offer test rides on American Quarter Horses to WEG spectators at the John Deere Reining Arena. For those who have some riding experience, there will also be a chance to “Ride a Reiner,” to experience a dizzying spin or even a sliding stop on a well-trained reining horse.

It’s an incredible chance for AQHA to let a larger audience see – by watching and riding – just how athletic and versatile our breed is.

The rides will be conducted inside an MD Barns open-sided barn that will be constructed on what is now a parking lot at the Kentucky Horse Park. The arena base and special reining surface will be brought in by Kiser Arena Specialists and maintained by John Deere Gators and drags.

Rain, Rain......Go Away!(And The Barking Game)

Well, I must admit that the last month has been a big let-down as far as the horse-showing goes. I was all excited to take some trips away from the ranch and go people-watching and all we’ve done this month is watch the Weather Channel. I don’t mind watching TV - my favorite show is America’s Funniest Home Videos - but I find nothing interesting about the Weather Channel. No bouncing balls or Jack Russells jumping, barking, digging or scratching.

It seems that Mother Nature has been spoiling our traveling plans with downpours being scheduled from Friday through Sunday. (Or at least Friday and Saturday.) Leaving most of the arenas around our neck of the woods too wet to hold a show. Needless to say, I heard the word “canceled” quite often this past month and I think I have figured out what it means in people talk....it means: “we are staying home this weekend.”

Since we haven’t got to take a ride in the truck recently for entertainment, I have started playing a game in the evenings (or whenever I get bored.) It involves the three big dogs that live outside, a serious conversation being held by the people and my favorite little bark box - “Princess Annabelle.”

The object of the game is to wait until everything is very quiet around the ranch. The people have to be talking among themselves and they have to be intent and focused on their conversation before the game can start. My job is to wait until the perfect moment and then to let out the sharpest, loudest bark I can muster up. When this works correctly, it cues our favorite little bark-box, Annabelle. Her job is to take off running and barking towards the ranch entrance. Immedately, if I time it just right, the three bigs dogs take chase and join in on the barking game. We win the game if we can get the people to start barking too! We win almost every time we play!

Princess Annabelle has started trying to hone her way in on my job. I have noticed her several times lately starting the game without me. I am not sure if the three big dogs like playing the barking game with her as much....she seems to start the game and then walk off after she gets them good and excited. It almost seems like she is doing it on purpose, just to get the people to bark at the big dogs.

Needless to say, we will find ways to entertain ourselves until the rain goes away and we can do some people watching again.

Cowboy Fred Whitfield and Hunter Herrin To Compete for $10,000 at Battle in the Saddle

Match Roping

The American Quarter Horse Journal, May 24, 2010 – A match roping between Texan Fred Whitfield and Oklahoman Hunter Herrin will be held July 9 at the inaugural Battle in the Saddle competition at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City. In the Texas versus Oklahoma duel, accuracy will be the name of the game and more than state pride is on the line. The roper with the most catches will ride away with $10,000 and a pair of commemorative Battle in the Saddle spurs.

Whitfield and Herrin, both professional tie-down ropers, will rope in five rounds for a $10,000 winner-take-all purse. State Fair Park and the American Quarter Horse Association have teamed up to present Battle in the Saddle, the first-of-its-kind equestrian event. The event is owned by Oklahoma State Fair Inc. and managed by AQHA and is a premier equine competition showcasing five western disciplines. Competitors will shoot it out in five fast-paced, exciting events: ranch horse, reining, working cow horse, roping and cutting.

Whitfield is an eight-time World Champion tie-down roper from Hockley, Texas, with career earnings of more than $2 million and has qualified to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo 18 times. (continued....)

(continued....)Fans of the Texas cowboy are sure to be “raising the roof” with Whitfield’s famous hand gesture. Hailing from Apache, Oklahoma, Herrin has four Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifications in his six-year career and has more than $600,000 in career earnings. The talented Oklahoma roper finished second in the 2008 world standings.

The excitement begins at 7 p.m. at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City. In addition to the match roping, the evening will also include the finals for the junior and senior team roping. Tickets for the Friday night roping event are only $15 and can be purchased from the State Fair Park ticket office.

The world’s most talented horses and cowboys take center stage July 5-10 in Oklahoma City to battle it out for top honors at the inaugural Battle in the Saddle competition. Battle in the Saddle is open to all breeds and will feature $130,000 in added money for an estimated $300,000 in total purses. Cutting, reining, roping and working cow horse classes will be recognized as AQHA special events. All breeds are welcome, but American Quarter Horses competing will receive AQHA points.

Roping events will be recognized by the American Rope Horse Futurity Association and follow ARHFA rules. Horses competing in the cutting will receive National Cutting Horse Association recognition. Ancillary reining classes will be approved by the National Reining Horse Association and NRHA affiliate Oklahoma Reining Horse Association. The National Reined Cow Horse Association will be involved as well.

State Fair Park in Oklahoma City, often referred to as “The Horse Show Capital of the World,” is a premier equine facility that annually hosts the American Quarter Horse Association World Championship Show, the National Reining Horse Association Futurity and Derby, the U.S. Team Roping Championships, the International Finals Rodeo and many other major equine events. With more than $70 million in recent renovations and stalls available for 3,000 horses, State Fair Park has become the go-to destination for top-tier equine competitions and events.

Cowboy Mounted Shooting is one of the fastest growing and most exciting equestrian

sports in America. It combines the elements of Wild West Show exhibition shooting along with the skills of barrel racing, pole bending and reining while using two .45 caliber single action revolvers loaded with black powder blanks.

The object of the game is to shoot ten balloon targets while riding your mount through a variety of challenging courses. It’s a timed sport in which the competitor who rides the fastest with the least amount of missed targets wins. Cowboy Mounted Shooting is open to all levels of riders and all breeds of equine. Each Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association (CMSA) member enters the sport at the Class 1 level and moves up through the levels as experience and competition wins are achieved. These include Men’s Class 1-6, Ladies Class 1-6, and Senior Classes 1-6, as well as a Wrangler Class for members 11 years of age or younger. All CMSA member achievements are tracked and World Points are earned at all CMSA sanctioned competitions. The number of points for each event varies and can accumulate to offer members year-end awards, prizes and contests entries. CMSA wants you to become a part of this great American equestrian experience by becoming a member. Be prepared to meet the friendliest and most social people in the equestrian world. Cowboy Mounted Shooting is a family sport dedicated to keeping our Western Heritage alive and the spirit of the West lives in the game and the people who surround it.

Meet Jimmy Keffer.Jimmy is 34 years old.

If you have not had the opportunity to meet or chat with Jimmy, be prepared to be inspired.

Jimmy spent some time with Terrie VanVolkenburgh and shared his story, his thoughts and his passion for horses, his love for barrel racing and his connection with the barrel racers who now call him a friend.

The BeginningJimmy was born and raised in Dawson, Pennsylvania. He lived with and was raised by his “Gram.” Jimmy refers to “Gram” as his special someone.

As a child, Jimmy attended elementary school at Manilian and also Uniontown, Pennsylvania. He attended a regular public school and he also went to disability class.

When asked about his disability, Jimmy feels that the only disability he has is not being able to walk. He has been in a wheelchair all of his life.

Jimmy collected baseball cards as a child, but as he grew older his interests changed somewhat. After graduating from high school at Connellsville, Pennsylvania, Jimmy took a computer class for one semester at Penn State. To date, he claims computers as one of his interests and he is also now an amateur radio operator. His cell is ka3vgm.

The HorsesAnother interest that Jimmy has kept since high school is horses. The first show he attended was a pleasure show and that was in his early childhood, he grew up around alot of pleasure horse people.

He was able to ride horses from 1993-2006 at local 4H clubs in his county. He competed in showmanship, western equitation and western trail class. He has even won two blue ribbons while participating.

Page 35

The Barrel Racing BugThere is not alot of NBHA in Pennsylvania, but Jimmy has always had a interest in barrel racing. In 2005 he met a lady and she got him more interested in barrel racing. It was about that time that he discovered BarrelHorses.com, Barrel Horse World and other barrel racing websites.

Then came the webcasts. The first show he watched as a webcast was the 2007 BRN-4D world champions. His opinion of the webcast - he has taken alot of interest- “He loves it.”

He still enjoys watching webcasts of barrel racing. He is religiously there watching and hoping to advise people on technical matters. Jimmy says that the people who do the webcasts are like family and without them he would be lost.

The Youth World TripIn 2009 Jimmy attended the NBHA Youth World in Jackson, Mississippi. He got to meet many barrel racers and their horses and we thought you would like to share in Jimmy’s experience with the great people in the barrel racing industry.

Q & A with JimmyTerrie asked Jimmy some questions and here’s what he had to say...

What are his thoughts on the barrel racing industry? He thinks its great. He just wishes there was more activity on a local level, but hopes it continues to grow in his area.

Does he see a future in barrel racing for people with disabilities? He said he knows of one organization that includes barrel racing for people with disabilities and that it is out West.

“I have known Jimmy for one year. I met him at Youth World last year. Clint was riding “Critter” (Cause Heza Bully) who belongs to Nancy Adkins. She asked one favor of us and that was for Jimmy to meet “Critter.”

When Clint brought Critter up to meet, Jimmy it brought tears to my eyes just seeing the smile on his face and how exciting it was for him to pet Critter, something we all take for granted.

Since then Jimmy and I have kept in touch and have became very good friends. We text and talk on the phone. If we’re not at a barrel race and its webcast and we want to know who’s winning, we just give Jimmy a text and we know who’s winning.

My family and I all talk to Jimmy. He’s a great guy and really intelligent, a very special person. I consider myself lucky to call him my friend, we love him.” ~Terrie VanVolkenburgh

“Amazing and Awesome is how I describe Jimmy.” ~Clint VanVolkenburgh

“There are so many wonderful things to say about Jimmy. If I named them all I would probably run out of paper. Jimmy is an inspiration to me and really should be an inspiration to many others once they hear his story.

I met Jimmy at Youth World in 2009. I have grown very close to him and once you get to know him it’s like he never has a disability. Jimmy has very unique talents. I know people make fun of people with disability problems, but I think why? Why would you make fun of someone like that when there are great things they can do? Jimmy is a great friend to me and my family, he will continue to be a friend that’s like a part of our family for a lifetime.” ~Casey Sparks

Page 36

What is it about horses that helps people with disabilities? Physically - riding a horse is the same as walking.Mentally - helps emotional lows and stress. Being able to pet a horse is very relaxing.

Who are his favorite barrel racers? He remembers that the first barrel racer he met was Rene Trout. On a professional level the first barrel racers he met were Mesa Leavitt and Blaise Bercegeay at the All American Youth Barrel Race in Jackson, Mississippi in 2007. He also met Taylor Carver at thr Youth World in 2009. He loves all the kids, so its really hard to pick a favorite, these were just some special ones.

What are some moments or people that changed his life? All the people he met at NBHA Youth World in Jackson, Mississippi have made a great difference in his life. He truly enjoyed the trip and met lots of people.

His favorite moment at a barrel event?Getting to pet Junior’s Geniune Doc at Youth World in Jackson, Mississippi in 2009 and also in 2007 he got to pet Hotshot at the All American Youth.

Barrel racer(s) he would like to meet?Jennifer Lichtenbarger and Stevie Watson

If he could own any horse which one would it be?He couldn’t pick just one: Junior’s Genuine

Doc, Red Man Bay, Hotshot, BR Instant Cash and VF Coup de Ville just to name a few.

One event that he would like to attend?NBHA Open World and Josey Jr. World.

Favorite food is seafood but no sushi...

Jimmy also added:“I love for people to text me while they are riding their horses, it makes me feel as though I am riding. I also LOVE AUTOGRAPHED pictures of people with their horses.”

Jimmy can be emailed at: [email protected] or look him up on facebook at Jimmy K. Horsezip. He loves to meet new people.

I had always had horses when I was younger. My best friend Barb Pratt’s family had a sale barn and one time there was a horse at the sale that I climbed onto to try him out during lunch hour at school. He ran away with me and dumped me in a pile of lumber—needless to say I didn’t look too good when I went back to school at 1:00.

I sold my horse when I entered high school and didn’t get another another one until after I was married. My husband, Mike, and I were 25 years old. Mike was a band director and I had gone to a meeting and met a gal who barrel raced and she invited me to come ride. Well, horses are a disease you know, and once you catch the disease you never get over it!

I wanted to buy a horse and Mike said that was fine, but he didn’t have any time for horses so I’d have to take care of it myself. Not long after, I called him to tell him I was going to ride—he didn’t answer. When I got to the barn, the horse was gone. Mike was out riding the horse along with a coach from school, who was on his horse. Mike had a horse within a couple of weeks. This was in 1965. We had two $175 horses, a $200 homemade trailer and away we went.

The first horse show we went to and the first event we rode in was a double clover leaf. We had to hold hands and ride the horses both around the barrels at the same time. I was on the outside and pulled Mike right into the barrel, over the head of the horse. He said he was totally embarrassed and was never going to do this again. That didn’t last long.

In 1967, we were living in Sheldon, Iowa, and bought a nice horse named Bullet from the Moodys, who live in Letcher, South

Dakota. We paid $500 for him so I had to have some jobs to help pay for him. I remember one time I had four shifts in a row—9-4-- working in accounting, 5-10 in a retirement home, 11-7 plucking chickens, and back to 9-4 working in accounting. Needless to say, when the horse was paid for, I quit some of my jobs!

The first week we got Bullet home we found out about the Park Jefferson Powder Puff Derby in Sioux City, Iowa. It was a feature race for women on grade horses riding with stock saddles. The horses did not start in the gates, but a hully gully style start right in front of the gates. At the trial race there were 18 horses in two heats and my qualifying time put me in 8th position to run on Sunday. (Which was last place.) I was so nervous before the race and didn’t want to end up in last place. The bell went off; I got a good start and ended up winning by a nose! The win picture showed I had a big ‘ol grin on my face! We had Bullet for at least 5 years and my husband and I really enjoyed him.

By this time, we had three children—Keith, who now lives in Phoenix, Arizona (married to Cheryl with granddaughter Alyssa), and Craig and Lori (neither of whom are married), who both live in Iowa City, Iowa, and manage the family’s mobile home park.

As our children were growing up, they were also involved with horses and Mike always said if there was any money left at the end of the show, we could go out to eat. This seemed to make them ride harder. Horses are a great family activity and if we were ever concerned that we were depriving them of other activities, they always assured us that this was what they really wanted to do.

We bought a really nice horse from Cindy and John Baltezore that all you needed to do was put your leg on his side and he would turn. How about that! It seems like every nice horse we’ve had somebody has wanted to buy.

We bought a couple of horses from friends in California—Carole and Mike Tilleman—that kept us going and then in 1989 Dynamizer came into our lives. We took him to Jim Warner and Jimmy did a great job with him and had a lot of success. The horse got injured by falling at the Congress and took about a year to recover. He was a big, beautiful 1st barrel hunter and fun to ride.

About the same time, we bought a nice horse named Short Prospect that we called Schnazz. That horse ended up being Mike’s favorite—he had a lot of luck riding him. He was such a nice horse and we finally sold him to Sue Schucardt who also did really well with him.

We were sitting watching at Oklahoma City and saw Leas Magic Moon run. Dale Youree said I beat the horse out of the arena to go and ask the owner about it. Dale always called me the bird dog and the nosiest person he’d ever met. We’ve always

liked Dale and Florence Youree—they’re great people. I ended up winning the Senior barrel race at Augusta in 1999 with this horse. I

had a lot of fun riding him at horse shows and rodeos. We ended up selling him as well as several other horses to Morgan and Kathy Grant formerly from Canada (now from Texas). They have had a lot of good runs on him.

Another notable horse was Red Hot Rebecca whom we purchased from Kelli Bowen from Georgia. At the 2001 Speed Horse Silver Cup, she was reserve champion with Jim Warner riding her. She won or placed at several futurities that year. Lindsey Sears came and stayed with us for a few days, took Rebecca to a show, got second, and ended up buying her.

About that time I was the first director for the state of Iowa NBHA. Our son, Craig, ended up winning 1st place three different years on three different horses—Run a Risk, Long Island Ice Tea, and Grammas Memories.

In 2003, we purchased Red Headed Jonsey at the Speed Horse Silver cup after he ran 16.6 in a full quarter horse pattern. Louis Fincher was riding him at the time and was owned by Louis and Rex Nelson. Louis kept riding him during his 5-year-old year and set several arena records. He won the BFA Derby Horse of the year in 2003 and received the Groundhog Arena Groomer made and donated by Lucas Metal Works.

The following year we took him to several events where Troy Crumrine would hop on him and do great. He was so much fun to watch. I won the Senior Barrels at Gifford, Illinois, on him and was the only WPRA rider to win two rodeos over the Fourth of July—one in Springdale, Arkansas, and one in Manawa, Wisconsin. Jonsey dug a hole big enough to bury himself in at Manawa when Red Hot Rebecca was on the other side of the trailer. We saw it and quickly moved her over to his side.

Through the years we had Jonsey, we would take him to the show for Troy to ride. In 2004 at Ft. Smith, Arkansas, we got a call that my father was sick in the hospital at Omaha, Nebraska, and we needed to be there. We left Jonsey and headed to Omaha to see Dad before he passed away. Troy was with Jonsey and rode him in his trial run with a 16.300, which I believe is the fastest time ever run there. His final run was 16.486 and he won the Ft. Smith Derby. He also won Derby Horse of the year again and received another Groundhog Arena Groomer. I was really emotionally attached to him, which made it extremely difficult to sell him.

Another notable horse was Reasy Dasher whom we purchased from Donnie and Diane Reece.

Some of the horses we presently have are Hoosiers Fame who got third in the Derby trials and sixth in the finals recently at Ft. Smith, Arkansas. He won the Ft. Smith Futurity last year with Troy Crumrine riding him. Troy is an absolutely magnificent rider and he and his family are so nice. DTF Close-Up is our 4-year-old futurity horse and Troy thinks that any time he will put it all together. I’m riding a really nice horse named Pine For Cash (Roany) who is really broke and we got him from Jackson Montgomery.

For the past four years, we’ve had an NBHA Horse Show here once a year and this year our show was in the middle of May. We really had a good time with lot s of great people who were fun to talk to. We have an indoor arena and our ground is quite sandy so even if it is raining it isn’t a problem.

For the past couple of years a few couples have taken off in January—horses and all—going South and looking for something to do. It’s been

really fun and makes a good break in the winter. I still have a desire to run barrels even though I’ve broken more than my share of bones in my body.

Throughout the years, Mike has been the farrier, vet, driver (I help too). It’s been a wonderful hobby and we have enjoyed it so much, doing this together over the years. We feel really blessed that we’ve been able to have some good horses but you know it really isn’t just about the horses, it’s more about the people you meet along the way.

Take care. God is good!As always, Jan & Mike Dahlen

Last & most important thought…Salvation is a gift and a choice......Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice. When He was resurrected on the 3rd day, he defeated Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death and acknowledge it with our words. If we believe that and accept Him as our personal savior…we are promised eternal life with Him in Heaven. You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to believe your way there. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

I was talking with my mom the other day about how I became so much more aware of how important a good foundation is for our children. She pointed out how much emphasis we put on a good foundation when training horses....

Of course, the young horses I am riding receive their foundation before they are “put to the test.” They all have been taught the basic fundamentals that may be needed to correct a problem in the future.

They all know the basic cues and if needed mid-pattern, I can call upon the foundation that was put in place to prevent or to correct a problem.

Without that foundation, many horses can be “ruined” when a problem occurs and there are no basics to return to call upon for a solution....No foundation upon which to stand.

During the conversation with mom, I was sharing with her something that I heard on the radio. (I searched on-line to try to find the exact number, but to no avail...so I will just write this from memory and I will not include numbers, as they may not be exact.)

The radio program relayed how they had quizzed students who were choosing to attend a Bible College for their education. They quizzed them on basic bible stories, time-lines, etc., questions that should be

easily answered by a student who was choosing to attend a bible college. Some of the example questions I knew the answers to, and honestly, some I didn’t (but felt as though I should have.)

The test results were saddening....The average quiz percentage was well below failing....( I can tell you that I was floored when I heard the numbers.)

This made me think of my own children and how much (or how little) they had been exposed to the foundation given to me as a child that I had taken for granted.

My kids are still young, but have I spent enough time introducing them to the heroes of the Bible? Do they know about Ruth or Joshua? Do they even know enough about Moses or David? Do they know that the bible heroes were people, just like us, that God used to achieve great things? Can they tell the stories of great things God has done and recorded? ....there are so many times I refer to those people, or that living word to “fix a problem.”

I asked myself if I was really providing my kids with the foundation that they may need someday.

That brings me back to a subject I touched on last month ....Prioritizing.

If we put God first in our life, and set that example, then our children will most

likely follow suit.

I realized how important it was for me to set the example of putting God first by making sure that we are in church (whether it is our home church or “Cowboy Church” at a horse-show) or set aside time on Sunday morning to spend time with God.

I realized that if I said “grace” over my food, but only said it “in my head” that it wasn’t benefiting my kids....they shouldn’t be ashamed to thank God for anything...at home or in public.

I realized that if I could put as much time into providing the horses that I am riding with a strong foundation for what their future holds, than I shouldn’t hesitate to do the same for my children.

Matthew 6:33But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

If you have a message you would like to share with our Christian Barrel Racer’s Newsletter or the Christian Cowboy Collection reader’s, email them to me [email protected].

This month’s mystery cowboys have been in the horse business for quite some time and they have both been very successful. Th two are still very active in the barrel horse industry and these days you will hear both names mentioned often at NBHA and other barrel racing shows in Indiana. During the month of July in recent years they have been extra busy during one of

Indiana’s largest barrel races. (That’s about all of the hints I am going to give!) Oh....and these pictures were taken of the brothers in 1965(L) and 1955 (R.)

Tell us the identity correctly and win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource or a “Horsey-T!”

Send us in your pictures from years past of a cowboy or cowgirl that someone else may be able to identify to win a Free subscription or “Horsey T.” And...KEEP those pictures coming!!! I’m running very low on the mystery pictures......and we don’t want to run out of fun. Whose picture would you love to see in here? Mail it in to us! We’ll return any originals that are sent regular mail....or email them to us at [email protected]. Good Luck!

Barbara Barten of Rensselaer he kids in our June issue’s Mystery of the Month , Indiana knew that the kids in our June Mystery of the Month were from left to right: (Front) Justin Hayworth, Brad Roorda, Bridget Roorda (Duggleby) and Ronda Stiles (Casey), (Back) Ashley Hayworth, Josh Clouse, Brock Roorda and Trent Roorda. These barrel racers were included in a local newspaper article write-up about the 1994 NBHA Youth World Championships. The Finals were held in Augusta, Georgia in 1994 and all the youth in the picture made the trip. THe kids were all from northwest Indiana.

Bridget Roorda (now Duggleby) has helped out on occasion with us here at The Horse Resource and Ronda Stiles (now Casey) stays very active in the barrel horse and rodeo world and has also been a great help to our Sales staff.

Brad Roorda is still very active in the barrel horse world and even had a former horse compete at the NFR in recent years with Firewater Fanny, ridden by Amanda Clayman.

If you have a picture of a Cowgirl or Cowboy that you would like to see featured as our Mystery of the Month. Send it via email to us at [email protected] or mail it to us at 12601 S. CR 200 W., Muncie, IN 47302. (ALL originals will be returned.)

Keep’em comin’! Thanks to those who have sent in Mystery Photos!
