The Versatile Stock Horse movement is alive and well and rolling down the tracks! Everywhere I look, there is another article about the stock horses and their riders. As I look around at other segments of the horse industry, it is refreshing to be involved in the Stock Horse movement, where the emphasis is on improving the horse’s level of training and the rider’s ability and have fun doing it. Folks are getting together for the sake of actually enjoying one another’s company and for the sake of getting better at what they do. Imagine that - and we even act like we like it! Other associations are now trying to emulate what we have been doing successfully for years.

ASHA is growing and now has members in 33 states. We will sanction close to 70 events this year, including 4 regional championship shows. My hat is off to all the ASHA affi liates, sponsor groups and individual members across the nation, who believe in and support our great concept.

About 16 years ago, when Jack Brainard, B.F. Yeates, Roger Blackmon, Dr. Bill Jackson and myself all met in Jack’s living room and sat around throwing out ideas for an association dedicated to preserving the versatility in our western horses, few of us had the far-reaching vision that we would someday actually see this concept expand beyond the borders of our own state and grow into a national organization. Our premise, at that time, was that our stock horses had become too specialized and there was not enough emphasis on the all-around horse and on education for the average horse owner. One of our founding principles has always been to appeal to the grass roots horse enthusiast. Those who may have fallen by the wayside amongst all the huge purses, expensive horses and level of training required to be competitive at the top level. We believed, as you all obviously do, that there is still a place for the horse owner who wants to ride their own horse and get a little help occasionally. As evidenced by member involvement in local and regional events, our founding principles have been confi rmed.

As with any growing association, we do occasionally run into bumps in the tracks or maybe the train slows down a bit as we go up the next hill, but our coal box is still full of coal and the engine is building steam! Our founding principles of promoting the versatile stock horse and in helping people ride a better stock horse is as needed today as it was 16 years ago. The association is you, the members, and it will never be any more successful than the success of individual members in promoting our mission and taking it to the next person down the road. We are all evangelists for the versatile stock horse and if we all do our part, our growth and success cannot be held back.

Winston Churchill once said, “The outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man (or women).” Ride all you can and every day, strive to “Ride a Better Horse”. Hope to see all of you at a show before long!

From the President...

REGION 5 - CoWN

I am excited to announce that the 2012 CoWN fund raising event held at the McPhaul Arena was a HUGE success!! We far exceeded our expectations and this event was only possible because of our great membership and your support. There were 40 clinic participants and over 50 entries in the schooling show portion. Thank you! I would also like to thank Jim and Kathleen McPhaul for donating their very nice facility for the event! The feedback on the event was overwhelmingly positive and it has been suggested that we do another event like this in the fall. Let me know if this is something you would like to have put together.

CoWN had a great kick off to the 2012 show season with the NJC Showdown in Sterling, CO. We had 78 entries with several new faces and lots of new membership applications turned into the offi ce. With the success of this show, I greatly look forward to the rest of the summer and all that it will bring for CoWN and its members.

We have now added new shows in Burlington, Briggsdale, CO in June and Black Hawk, CO in August. This are in addition to the two Slidin Daze shows to be held in Greeley and Salida. Please check the website for updates and show information. We will be sure to keep

you all posted as more details emerge!

It is offi cial!! CoWN was granted the bid to host the 2012 ASHA National Futurity and Derby with our Region 5 Championship show!! This is a great opportunity for CoWN to showcase that we can not only host phenomenal local shows, but we can also do it right with shows at both the regional and national level! Please check the website for details on Futurity and Derby nominations and please pass the word! The Regional Show will be held in Denver at that the National Western Events Center on November 29- December 2nd, 2012.

My heartfelt condolences go out to Matt and Kim Lindsey, and Kelsey Watring on the loss of Zinn Lindsay. The Lindsey family has been very active in the stock horse world and was highly involved in the origination of CoWN. This is a tragic loss to a family and friends of our community. Please send your thoughts their way.

Have a good ride!

Stephen Freeman Benefit Auction

Friends and family gathered April 14th & 15th at the Southeast Stock Horse Association show, in Headland, Alabama, for a fundraising benefit for injured horseman, and 2011 Region 2 Open Champion, Stephen Freeman.

On the evening of Monday, April 2nd, Freeman was turning a stallion out to pasture when it grabbed him by the throat causing severe damage to his windpipe and vocal chords. After a successful surgery, he is making an astounding recovery.

When the news of Freeman’s accident spread, a group of close friends and fellow horse enthusiasts gathered together to help raise funds for his treatment and recovery, by way of a silent auction during the stock horse show. Over $9,000 total was raised through

the auction and monetary donations to benefit Freeman, his wife Kristen, and their new baby boy, Jacob.

To date Stephen has made an astounding recovery! Doctors were able to remove the tube from his throat and he has been able to ride again!

YOUTH CLINIC

Southeast Stock Horse Association in Headland, Alabama hosted its first-ever all-youth clinic on June 8. With participants ranging in age from 9 to 18, it was a day full of fun and learning for 27 kids. Six clinicians donated their time, Carolyn Smith, Cindy Wynn, Darryl Landreth, Dickey Maraman, Ed Wilson, and Henry Wynn. The kids were able to learn about all 4 events offered at Stock Horse shows.

Through the generosity of several donors, the kids also enjoyed a free lunch, were each provided with a t-shirt, and had a water slide. There was also a “raffle” and each child was able to get at least 1 item from the selection which ranged from saddle pads to an mp3 player. The clinic was a lot of fun and can’t wait until next year!!

Region 1

Mustang Heritage Foundation to Award Martin Saddle to

Top American Stock Horse Association MustangThe top point-earning BLM-branded Mustang in 2012 ASHA competition to be rewarded.

Georgetown, Texas – Since the first Extreme Mustang Makeover event was held in 2007, the Mustang Heritage Foundation has facilitated the adoptions of more than 3,300 gentled American Mustangs. To reward and encourage Mustang adoptions, the Mustang Heritage Foundation has teamed with the American Stock Horse Association to recognize the top point-earning BLM Mustang competing in ASHA events in 2012.

All Mustangs that carry a Bureau of Land Management freezemark will be eligible to compete for the Martin Saddlery Mustang Edition Saddle. The Mustang does not have to be a graduate of a Mustang Heritage Foundation program to be eligible, but Mustangs must be registered in the American Stock Horse Association to qualify to win the saddle. The handmade saddle designed by Martin Saddlery features a traditional working design. Merit points earned by competing in ASHA sanctioned shows will be kept on all nominated Mustangs throughout the year. The Mustang/Rider combination who garnishes the most points for the 2012 year will win the saddle.

“The American Stock Horse Association offers a great opportunity for American Mustangs to showcase their versatile talents,” said Patti Colbert, Executive Director of the Mustang Heritage Foundation. “Our Extreme Mustang Makeover events give our Mustangs the opportunity to shine, and our adopters are always looking for ways to continue competing with their talented adoptees. ASHA events are the perfect fit for America’s Mustangs to compete and now they will have an added incentive for this year-end award.”

The mission of the Mustang Heritage Foundation and the goal of the Extreme Mustang Makeover events are to increase the adoption of Mustangs across the country. The Mustang Heritage Foundation created the Extreme Mustang Makeover events to showcase the recognized value of Mustangs through a national training competition. For more information, visit www.mustangheritagefoundation.org.

Equipment Rules

• Horse(s) will be exhibited in a snaffle bit, hackamore or bridle. • If horse is to be shown in snaffle bit, it shall be “D” or “O” ring type, no larger than 4 inches and no smaller than 2 inches in diameter on inside of the ring. They must have a broken 2 piece mouthpiece, a minimum of 5/16 inches in diameter (measured 1 inch from the inside of the ring) with a gradual decrease to the center of the snaffle. The mouthpiece should be round, oval or egg shaped and made of smooth, unwrapped metal. A leather or fabric woven chin strap may be used. No iron, chain or other metal may be used. • If horse is to be shown in hackamore, the bosal must be made of braided rawhide or braided leather and will be a maximum of ¾ inch at the cheek. There must be a minimum of 2 finger widths, approximately 1 ½ inch, between bosal and the nose. Absolutely no metal under the jaw or on the noseband in connection with the bosal is allowed. • Horses ridden in a snaffle or hackamore must use either split reins or mecate reins. Horses in a snaffle or hackamore must be ridden 2-handed during the competition. If a horse is ridden one-handed, there will be a 2 point penalty for each maneuver performed one-handed (except in instances where one hand is required, such as roping, opening gate, etc.). • If the horse is to be shown in the bridle, the mouthpiece must be at least 5/16” and not more than 3/4” in diameter measured one inch from cheek and must be smooth. Nothing may protrude below the mouthpiece such as extensions or prongs. Split reins or romal reins shall be used with all curb bits. Curb straps are required for curb bits and the curb chains or straps must be at least ½ inch in width and must lie flat against the horse’s chin. No wire curbs are permitted, regardless of the amount of padding or tape. Horses shown in the bridle must be exhibited one-hand-ed. Using two hands on a curb bit or using more than one finger between split reins or any finger between romal reins will result in a two point content deduction each maneuver performed, each time there is a violation. Continuous use of two hands on reins with curb bit is a major fault and will be reflected in the maneuver score. • Mechanical hackamores, cavessons, tie downs and running martingales are prohibited. • After each reining and cow work go, headstalls must be dropped and viewed by the equipment official and mouth checked. A horse found to have blood present on the mouth or anywhere else on its body may be disqualified at the discretion of the judges.
