Things are really starting to get busy around here. With the holidays upon us and winter weather making barn chores take longer than usual, everyone’s plate is pretty full. The short days don’t help any making

it hard to get everything finished while the sun is shining! With that being said, busy is good. We like busy.

There have been some exciting things happen in the past month. One really exciting thing for me personally is that I was finally able to leave my “day job” and will now be able to focus much more of my time on The “Fast” Horse Resource and what is going on here in the office daily. (Most of our readers probably didn’t realize that for the past four years I have worked a full-time job while growing this publication.) God is answering prayers and we are really looking forward to what the future holds.

Another bit of exciting news is that our Annual Stallion Calendars are in the mail. If you are a subscriber, you should be receiving yours any day now. We hope you enjoy them throughout the year.

Speaking of stallions, our next few issues will featuring some of the best looking, best bred stallions in the nation. Please take a serious look and if you haven’t already decided who you are breeding to for that next prospect, maybe you’ll find the answer on one of our pages.

Stop by and check out our page on Facebook, we’re going to try to have more news and updates daily starting in January! Just look for The Fast Horse Resource.

It’s time for me to wrap it up and start thinking about some Christmas shopping.....I’m the last minute shopper, scrambling for a good idea and a good deal. On that final note this month, we want to wish you a very Blessed Christmas from the staff here at The “Fast” Horse Resource. May we all remember the Reason for the Season.

Until next month.........Enjoy your family........sneak in a ride on Christmas day.......and count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe,

Christa Conway

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

We have a winner from our November horseshoe hunt! Mona Davis found the horseshoe on page 36 in the photo on the top right of the horse turning the barrel. Mona chose to extend her subscription for another year as his prize. Evonne Berry and Dana Sparks also found the horse shoe. Find this well hidden horseshoe for their chance at a FREE “Horsey-T,” “Horsey-Hat” or a year’s subscription. Call or email when you find it and we’ll mention your name in our next issue and send you a prize if you are the first to contact us! “Happy horseshoe hunting!” (Find the horseshoe to the left somewhere in this issue and email or call us with it’s location! A Little “Barrel Talk”

PENDLETON RODEO Extreme Veteran Posts: 388I was watching Women’s Pro Rodeo today and could not believe my eyes when I saw how large the pen was at Pendleton. I honestly, did not know there are pens that large. I completely learned something new.

Is it the biggest pen for barrel racing? Are there other’s that big? I did search the forum for an answer and I saw a post comparing it to Cheyenne. Which is the larger pen?

uno-dos-tres! Expert Posts: 2807Location: Bandera, TX Many large pens, in this case it is the largest pattern al-lowed by WPRA. I want to have a horse someday that can handle the pattern; for now its a very big want! Thought I had “the” horse for it a couple of years ago but he began to bleed about the time he was coming into his own. Glad that Pendelton committee desires to have the gigantic pattern-what a challenge it must be.

rockinas Best of the BadlandsLocation: Central South DakotaWhile Cheyenne’s pen is really big, they set a standard WPRA pattern in there.

trickster j Too busy outside! Posts: 3412Location: Wyoming Anyone know the measurements for Pendelton? I want to set it up in my hay field! Thanks-

RocketPilot Expert Posts: 1244Location: TexasIt is not really a pen. It is a football field with a dirt track around it. That third barrel is set on the track that slopes upward. Great rodeo. I would bet that the horses and barrel racers are sucking air after that run. lol Red RaiderToastest with the Mostest Posts: 3125Location: That part of Texas I have a horse that was born to run that pattern. It’s on our bucket list. GoMistyGo Texas Taco Posts: 5774Location: Bandera, TX That looked like sooooo much fun. I would love to make a run there..

~rodeojunkie~ Member Posts: 38Location: OregonI live here in Pendleton! the pattern is set as this:

Score line to first barrel is 60ft First to second is 290ft Second to third is 288ft that long run home is 348ft

I’m to much of a chicken to even try but maybe someday! trickster j Too busy outside! Posts: 3412Location: Wyoming Awesome!!! Thank you!!! hammer_time Money Eating Baggage OwnerPosts: 3299Pendleton looks WAAY too scary for me. You have to rate down on the grass and then hit the dirt...meanwhile while you rate you need to shape your horse while throttling down from top speeds....YIKES not for me. Rookie Cowgirl Megan Yurko Has Two Goals Down,

One to go….IFR42By: Tammie Hiatt from www.iprarodeo.com

Fourteen-year-old Megan Yurko set a pretty attainable goal for her rookie year in the IPRA, she wanted to see her name listed in the rookie standings, easy enough. Then she set her goal to be in the top 20 of the IPRA world standings, again, not a huge hurdle for Megan and her talented partner, Beea.

Now as the 2011 rodeo season is drawing to a close, the Wheeling, WVA teen raised her bar even higher and is trying to qualify for her first trip to the International Finals Rodeo. Team Yurko is hovering on the bubble but is hoping to get a seat secured during the final rodeos of the season. “I did really good at Clinton, ON and I know that didn’t cinch it for me, but it sure helped,” said Megan.

“I don’t come from a rodeo family, my older sister, Karla, runs barrels too, but she competes at horse shows and big barrel races. She doesn’t want to go to the rodeos. Me, I will take a rodeo over a big show any day. I don’t like to have to wait for everyone to run before I know if I won anything. My oldest sister, Sara, is a senior this year and isn’t into the horses like Karla and I. We are all on the swim team at Wheeling Park High School. As soon as school is out we all go to swim practice, when I get home I take care of Beea and do homework. It keeps me really busy.”

“When I wanted to start going to rodeos, my parents really didn’t know how to get me to where I wanted to be. We knew Amber Mostoller from going to the IBRA races and she’s the one that convinced me that I needed to buy my IPRA card,” Megan said.

“I’ve only been running at rodeos for about three years now and this has been my first year to travel much. I didn’t expect it to be so hard, but it’s been a blast,” she said. “I’ve really had to learn how to manage my time, especially now that school has started. I went with Amber during the summer but this fall my Dad is hauling me. It’s been really convenient that my Dad is a vet and can take care of my horse when we are on the road.”

“I’ve been riding Beea for about 4 years,” Yurko said. “Her registered name is Beea Stash of Money and she’s by On The Money Red. She’s eight-years-old and is solid sorrel. We purchased her in Ohio from Carla Arthur. Carla had trained her but she wasn’t seasoned to rodeos. It re-ally wasn’t a big deal to her, she just doesn’t like ropes, and so I try to

stay away from the ropers. But we’re work-ing on it,” she laughs.

“We had met Carla at some of the IBRA shows we went to,” said Dr. Karl Yurko, Megan’s father. “We knew Beea and knew this was the horse we wanted for Megan. This horse is just so talented and Megan rides well, so they have made a great team.”

“Beea is really consistent. She only hit one barrel this summer. She has a ton of speed and is pretty honest. She really likes small pens where the barrels are right on the fences,” Megan said. “I always talk to her and let her know we are getting ready to run. Then I sit and think about our run. I also pray with the announcer at the beginning of the rodeo and also before I go into make my run. Beea has a habit of wringing her tail when she runs and a lot of people comment about it. I just tell them that is her propeller and it makes her go faster!”

“My best memory from a rodeo this year has to be St. Tite. I drew up in the slack and it had rained so we didn’t have the best ground and I was so nervous. We ended up 3 holes from making the short go. I will defi-nitely go back next year. It was an awesome experience,” said Megan.

“When I started running barrels I would have to say that Mesa Leavitt was my first ever role model. This year I’ve had the chance to travel with Stassi Pyne and she truly inspires me. I look up to her,” she said.

“I’m very excited about the IFR, words can’t even explain it! I can’t wait. I am going to enter Pendleton, SC and Lexington, KY and hope-fully secure my spot at the IFR,” she said.

“I really want to thank my sponsors, LubriSyn and Buckeye Feed for all of their help. Most of all, I want to thank my family for making this possible for me.”

NewsIndiana State Fair Recap & Highlights

story by Laura Whitsitt

2011 saw the largest youth horse event in the state of Indiana. With a to-tal of 803 entries, over 7 days, with new ground in the Pepsi Coliseum, this year’s 2011 State Fair Horse & Pony show was one for the history books. The footing for contest events have been a long time concern at the state fair. A plan of attack to correct the problems was put into action late in 2010. Kiser Footing specialists were brought in from TX and a new mixture and tool to work it with were brought in for the 2011 show. All the competitors and their families were very appreciative. The Horse & Pony show ran from Friday Aug5th thru August 11th. The show had a total of 803 competitors within several different shows. The Contest show boasted the most entries with the western show a close second. The show also has and English and saddle seat division and a color guard competition. For the Fast Horse Resource magazine we will highlight the contest show winners.

First up was the Sr Barrel Race for horses over 56 inches. The Sr class boasts 132 entries with Camrin Conn representing Marshal County top-ping the class. The Jr Barrel Race56 inches and over was won by Carly Bowman representing Ohio County. The Sr Pony class champion was Kayla Cunningham representing Tipton County and the Jr Pony class was won by Rex Ochs representing Starke Co. As in all 5 of the con-testing events at the state fair the four class champions were brought back to the arena for a championship run off. The 2011 Indiana State fair Barrel Race champion was Camrin Conn with the fastest run of the day 16.944. The first day of the Gaming show also included the pole bending classes. Another huge class of Sr Pole Benders over 56 inches was won by Camrin Conn representing Marshall County. The Jr pole bending class champion was Trevor Hess representing Knox County. The Sr Pole Bending pony Class Champion was Samantha Bortner rep-resenting Noble County. The Jr Pole Bending pony class Champion was Rex Ochs representing Starke County. The 4 Champions were bested once again in the run off by Camrin Conn who was undefeated on the day and the fast pole bending time of 20.774. After a total of 415 runs and 15 hrs the show committee was ready for a break. The Con-testing show continued the next day with the Keyhole race, Flag race and speed and action race. Saturdays show held another 323 entries and great competition.

Legacy Sponsors Barrel Futurities of America World Championships

Provides Awards to Honor Western History and the Spirit of Inspiration

CASTALIA, North Carolina — October 31, 2011— As top futurity barrel racers descend upon Oklahoma City in early December to compete for World Champion status, they’ll have the opportunity to take home more than just a title. Thanks to Legacy, a company that makes vintage inspirational wares, celebrating the spirit of the dynamic women who redefined rodeo in the 1900s, they’ll win a piece of history.

Legacy has signed on to sponsor both the Futurity and the Derby at the prestigious Barrel Futurities of America World Championships, donat-ing two large, custom, gallery framed vintage prints as awards for win-ners of the two events. This year marks the 26th Anniversary of this industry-leading event.

“Our products are about inspiration and having the tenacity to follow your dreams,” said Jennifer Gray, Legacy co-Founder and Partner. As a barrel horse breeder and rider herself, Jennifer was excited to be able to award the competitors something a little different. “We’re proud to be a sponsor of the BFA World Championships. We wish everyone the best of luck and look forward to meeting the winners on December 10.”

ABOUT BARREL FUTURITIES OF AMERICA Barrel Futurities of America is the premier barrel racing futurity asso-ciation in the United States. Approving a number of futurity competi-tions for 4 yr. old horses, the BFA crowns a Futurity Champion each year in December at the BFA World Championships held in Oklahoma City, OK. Contestants, owners, breeders, vendors, everyone and anyone who is interested in barrel racing attends the BFA World Champion-ships.

Most recently, the BFA is attracting international attention. Two BFA-approved futurities will be contested in Canada, and the BFA boasts members from Canada, Italy, Spain, and Brazil. The BFA is a non-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors to raise the standards of barrel racing futurity contests and to work for the benefit of contestants, sponsors, and event committees.

Although the emphasis of the BFA is futurity competitions, the BFA also approves derby events for 5 & 6 yr. old barrel racing horses. At the World Championships, every level of rider has an opportunity to compete as there are events for amateur, open, and junior contestants.

BFA membership is open to any individual regardless of age or gender. For more information www.barrelfuturitiesofamerica.com

Average price rises at the 3rd Annual JB Quarter Horses Creating Legends Sale

By: Tanya Randall

The 3rd Annual JB Quarter Horses Creating Legends Sale, held Nov. 12 at the Extraco Center in Waco, Texas, experienced an increase in aver-age prices. The sale cataloged 67 head with 64 actually walking through the ring for a gross of $354,700.

The sale netted $231,300 with 48 of the 64 head (75 percent) actually changing hands. The average price for the sale, of which 50 percent of the horses were yearlings or younger, was $5,542, up a more than $1,000 from 2010.

Hosted by Joe and Dee Lynn Braman of JB Quarter Horses in Refugio, Texas, the sale featured 24 consignments from the Bramans and 43 guest consignments.

Mr JB 0719, a 2007 bay gelding by Two Timen Fuel out of the Merridoc mare, Streakin Merridoc, was the high seller. Consigned by JB Quarter Horses and in training with Kimmi Byler, Mr JB 0719 sold paid in full to Future Fortunes and Triple Crown 100. The 5-year-old futurity-eligible gelding brought a final bid of $17,300 from Guns Up Partnership.

JB Quarter Horses-owned stallion Hot Corona sired the second high-seller Miss JB 1011. The yearling bay mare is out of Miss Dallas Fuel, a full sister to JB stallion Dallas Fuel, by Oklahoma Fuel. Consigned by JB Quarter Horses, Miss JB 1011 sold for $15,000 to the Guns Up Partnership.

The high-selling guest consignment and third high-seller overall was the 2-year-old sorrel gelding Dragons Flame, by Mister Sundance Kid, a double-bred Flaming Jet stallion, out of Miss Oakie Bug, by Bugs Boy. Consigned by Laurie Gray, Dragons Flame was impressively demon-strated on the pattern by Jennifer Lee-Kovacik. Bryon Jones took the gelding home for $10,700.

The JB-owned consignment, Mr JB 107, a sorrel yearling gelding by Hot Corona out of National Finals Rodeo qualifier Mulberry Canyon Moon, a daughter of Marthas Six Moons with more than $280,000 in Equi-Stat earnings, sold for $9,800 to Sissy Novak. A longtime player in the barrel racing industry, Novak campaigned World Futurity Champion Willy Nick Bar and bred the fabulous WPRA World Champion Sugar Moon Express, owned and ridden by Lindsay Sears. Novak said she will put the gelding in training with plans to point him toward the futurities. Rounding out the Top 5 Sellers was Miss JB 078, a 4-year-old daughter of Hot Corona out of Saint Bugs, by Bugs Alive In 75. Consigned by the Bramans, Miss JB 078 worked a nice pattern under the guidance of Angie Boyce. The mare sold paid in full the BFA World Championship Futurity, Future Fortunes, the $25,000 Fortunes Round at the BFA Futu-rity and Triple Crown 100. She is also eligible for two derby years at Old Fort Days as she was entered in the futurity, but didn’t compete. Kasey Aldridge signed the ticket at $8,800.

QHRAI December Newsletter2011 is almost in the books. Quarter Horse Racing in Indiana this year included some of the best racing in the country. “We” started the year out at Indiana Downs this spring with new babies and

seasoned older horses. “We” ended the year at Hoosier Park with many “seasoned” 2 year olds already set-ting their sites on next year. It doesn’t seem possible that they were just breaking from the

starting gates in schooling races in April and May. But they did, and many haven’t looked back since!!

“We” have many great highlights this year including a full day of Quar-ter Horse Racing at both Indiana Downs and Hoosier Park. Of course you can’t have a full day of Quarter Horse racing without celebrating, so we had plenty of that!! Our horses ran for over 4.3 million dollars on 62 race days in 188 races at two fabulous race tracks in a 6 month period of time. Our gates filled, our gates were full, and did I say our gates filled? Our race program is strong and is attracting quality horses from across the country. Do you remember Spit Curl Diva making her 2011 debut at Indiana Downs? Do you remember One Tough Dude? Quality is coming to Indiana and continues to improve here.

Some of our race office friends have moved on this year to better cli-mates and different jobs and we will miss them. “We” wished the best of luck to Butch, Mike and Cindy in the Winners Circle when we learned of their new endeavors and we welcome and look forward to working with Scott and other new friends in the race offices.

“We” were saddened by the injuries that some of our Jockey family suf-fered, and are thankful for the recovery that has been made as we con-tinue to pray for full recoveries. “We” were grateful to be able to have fundraisers to contribute to Richie and his family, and are thankful for those beauties that “solicited” contributions and for the unique field of horses that made quite an impression on our last day of racing at Hoo-sier Park. “We” are fortunate to have an industry full of people who care. The Quarter Horse Racing Industry in Indiana is a caring family.

“We” are fortunate to have many step up and help our fellow horsemen

in times of need. Whether you have offered help in the form of work, finances, simply take time to listen, or initiate a call to help brighten someone’s day, your efforts and kindness are the reason our horsemen family continues to grow stronger.

“We” grieve when we lose a friend, man or horse, and “we” are blessed by our caring friends who comfort us.

“We” spent a lot of time at the statehouse in the spring talking to legisla-tors about the importance of Quarter Horse Racing in Indiana and the amount of Economic Impact Horse Racing brings to Indiana. “We” are fortunate to have “salvaged” the Quarter Horsemen’s money in 2011 , yet we are already faced with new challenges for the upcoming legisla-tive session. “We” need your support to contact your legislators to sup-port Quarter Horse racing in Indiana. Let them know how much you personally invest in the horse racing industry and in your immediate communities. Help them understand how much “WE” do for Indiana.

“We” had a great Speed Sale in the fall this year. It was our first and we plan to continue to make it better as a service to our horsemen.

“We” are going to have our Annual Stallion Service Auction, Awards Banquet and Membership Event on January 7th, 2012 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel at the Indianapolis Airport. There’s a great group of stal-lions being offered for the auction and like last year, if you purchase a stallion on the day of the auction your name will be put in a drawing for $1,000. The drawing will be after the awards program and you must be present to win!! There’s gonna be a silent auction and we can use your help to donate items for the Auction. Just bring them with you and take them to the ballroom before the Stallion Service Auction. There will be great food, many awards, and a lot of fun during the night. Please plan to join us and make this our biggest ever annual meeting. Oh, and bring some friends who might be interested in seeing what the Quarter Horse Racing Scene is about in Indiana. The dinner is free for those who purchase a 2012 QHRAI membership!!

“We” have good relationships with the Indiana Horse Racing Commis-sion and with both tracks. “We” have once again been approved by the Indiana Horse Racing Commission to be the sole representative for the Quarter Horse Racing Industry in Indiana. “We” represent the entire Quarter Horse Racing Industry in Indiana and make decisions and recommendations based on input from our horsemen. There is no single individual, nor any organization that is more qualified or capable of representing the Quarter Horse Racing Industry in Indiana than your elected board of directors. “We” are Q.H.R.A.I.!!

Wishing you and your family the best this holiday season!!

QHRAI News

The 2011 race season in Indiana has come to an end, there were a lot of big winners, a lot of new players, but more than anything there were a lot of things that stayed the

same. We will have a complete statistical breakdown of the 2011 race season in an upcoming issue, we ran for over $4 mil-lion in 187 races. Ave earnings for Indiana Bred 2 yr olds was over $7,000 and average starts per Indiana Bred 2yr olds was at all time high. Ron Raper was leading trainer at both tracks, and an Indiana Sired 2yr old and 3yr old were at or near the top of their age divisions most of the year, you might be surprised to know several Indiana breds are near the top in more than one na-tional AQHA categories. It was a very good year to race Quarter Horses in Indiana ESPECIALLY “Indiana Breds”.

BREEDING ruled the day, the week, the month and nearly every race, pedigrees made their way to the winners circle and to the tops of nearly all the money lists. Too often we focus on the royally bred horse that can’t break his maiden, or the breeder who bred to a high end stallion only to sell him as a barrel pros-pect, the fact is, however, that the best bred horses nearly always win. There are exceptions to every rule, but most of us would go broke if we ran our horse operations by those exceptions.

Over the past several years Indiana has been dominated by a handful of mares and even a fewer number of breeders who have honed their breeding operations to a sharper point than most, and they are reaping the rewards of their efforts.

The Indiana Bred 2yr old crop this year was noticeably im-proved and is more than likely going to be on a sharp rise over the next several years. While looking through the money lead-ers for this year and their breeding, as expected the sires of the top ten money earners look like a who’s who in QH racing; Ivory James, Agouti, Ausual Suspect, Corona Cartel, Likenoth-ingyoueversaw, Stel Corona, Mr. Eye Opener, and Indiana Sires Chilled Corona, Leader of the Class and Twaynas Dash. These are the sires of the top ten money earners in Indiana this year. With the exception of the Indiana sires, this list would match most leaders list from tracks around the country.

The surprise to most of us when looking over the pedigrees for the top ten would be the bottom side. We all have access to de-cent stallions for a reasonable fee, but take a look at the mama’s of the top ten or twelve money earners.

This list includes eight Indiana Breds and four open horses:

• Speedy Empress – A First Down Dash mare that ran out over $400k, Co-Ch 2yr old filly

• Six Packin Robin – dam of the Gordon Mobley Sired Futu-rity winner, broke her maiden by over four lengths at Rem-ington Park and ran a 104 in her first out, track record at Prairie Meadows, this was a big time runner.

• Hope For Me Too – This Shawnee Bug (one of QH’s all time leading broodmare sires) mare is a stakes winner of 4 races.

• Honey Bunny Bug – This is a triple A winner of 2 races, this mare just missed making the finals of the All American Futurity and the Remington Park Futurity, running in the consolations of both.

• Whata Sweet Song – This is another Shawne Bug stakes winning mare.

• Air Born Jazz – This mare is another stakes winner, she ran in 6 different states, 8 different tracks and ran out over $50k running in graded OPEN stakes company, she is the dam of the Born Runner Sired stake winner.

• Start The Comotion – A First Down Dash Mare who is a stakes winner at Los Al and multiple stakes producer.

• Just Wanna Be Me –Another Stakes winner from Los Alamitos, this mare has a 96 speed index and is by Dash to Chivato and out of a Signature mare who is out of a cham-pion runner.

• Sheza Rare One Too – This mare is unraced, her sire is Rare Form A champion runner/ producer and world record setter, her dam is Jettin Home, a stakes placed runner at Reming-ton Park.

• Hooked on Clover – This Graded stakes producer by Hooked on Cash earned her triple A and $26k race record running in stakes finals from one end of Texas to the other.

These are the dams of ten out of the top twelve money earners in Indiana in 2011; their ten runners earned nearly $900k, or nearly 20% of all purse money available in Indiana this year.

QHRAI NewsHere is just a bit more seasoning to put on your food for thought. Here are a few of the most recent “ Brood-mare of the Year” winners in Indiana;

• Kelsey Bug – a super fast stakes winning daughter by Shawne Bug

• Uncommon Class – A winning Chicks Beduino mare who is out of a Dash for Cash mare.

• Rareascanbe – A triple A daughter of Rare Form and out of a full sister to champion runner Espe-cially Rare.

Indiana Stallions need more good mares, Indiana train-ers need more horses out of good mares and Indiana breeders need more good mares.

Indiana Needs More Good Mares…

2011 QHRAISPEED SALE

The QHRAI held its first ever race sale on October 23rd, the house was packed, the facility was set up nearly perfect and the weather could not have been better.

Below is a statistical overview of our sale. There will be com-plete results on our website, qhrai.net around December 1st. Like any sale any of us have ever attended or heard about, the sale results “are in the eye of the beholder.” The market was un-kind to broodmares. No ifs, ands or buts about it. Could it have been Heritage Place right around the corner (a sale known to be a buyers market for broodmares)? Covering Sires? Produce? Foal Status? We do know one thing, buyers were there, as prov-en by attendees going straight to Heritage Place and spending $100,000 dollars on 16 horses only two weeks later.

In attendance were Indiana’s leading breeders, owners, and bar-rel racers from across the Midwest. They set the price that will be a bench mark as we move forward There were people there and they had money to spend. One of the most important out-comes of this open market is that a price was set. There is a high and a low, it is without question that Indiana’s breeders and owners have wavered as to the questions of the day: “What is an Indiana Bred/Sired worth?” “What do we price him for?” “Is he worth any price I can get a “green” owner to pay for him at the farm?” “How much more is a race prospect worth if he is an “Indiana Bred” than if he isn’t?”

Ninety three horses went through the ring on October 23rd and 93 questions were answered. The results of our mixed sale were higher than several comparable mixed sales held in Louisiana, Texas, Minnesota, etc.

The QHRAI has made the decision to offer this sale again in 2012. Details will be in the Horse Resource this spring. It will be a fall sale very similar to this one.

8 head for $30,800. Roger Beam sold 2 for $15,000. Michelle Collins sold 3 for $11,200.

Top Sellers –1. A Chilled Corona weanling for $8,500 consigned by

races will receive an additional 20% in purse bonus owner/breeder awards at the 2011/2012 Hialeah meet. 50% of rac-es will be written with equal dates/ Florida bred preferred. At least one restricted Florida bred race per week will be offered in 2011/2012. As new tracks are added, the Florida bred awards will only escalate. The First annual Florida Bred Futurity will be raced in 2012 and it will grow to $200,000 guaranteed for foals conceived in 2012 in the 2015 Florida Bred Futurity.

The program is designed to make Florida breds become synonymous with speed, quality and superior genetics.

There are two ways to breed an accredited Florida bred foal:

1. Breed to an Accredited Florida Stallion. This foal can be born anywhere and the mare can be bred with shipped semen.

2. If the mare is in foal to a NON Accredited Florida Stallion, the mare can foal in Florida and if she is bred back to an Accredited Florida Stallion in that SAME year both the foal born in Florida by the non-accredited Florida stallion and the foal born the following year that is sired by an Accredited Florida Stallion (this foal can be born outside of Florida) are Florida bred eligible. This could afford a breeder the opportu-nity to have the same foal accredited by two different states. Go to www.fqhra.com for Accredited Florida Bred eligibility requirements.

Cool weather and the be-ginning of fall colors greeted the 2011 Mid-

west Barrel Match Race partici-pants to the Circle G Arena in Lewisburg, Ohio on September 16-18.

The weekend started out on Friday night with a successful Open Show that found us pay-ing out a total of $3,028 in 23 placings to the Open 4D Barrel class with the winner being Te-resa Quay on Chance Bar Tease. Open 3D Poles Winner was Me-lissa Gonterman of Kentucky; Pee Wee Poles Winner was Kai-tlyn Ray of Illinois and Pee Wee Barrels Winner was TeTe Hart of Indiana. Saturday morning brought the beginning of the excitement of the Match Race with a color-ful Grand Entry and introduc-tion of each individual match participant and their team. We had 10 women’s teams and 5 men’s teams from the states of Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois. A tribute to Joan Lutz of The Rodeo Shop was read by Beth Weaver, Ohio Girls Barrel Racing Association President. (Joan was the founder of the annual Match Race beginning in 1968.) Brittany Pepiot then read “Barrel Racing Prayer” and Randy Colson sang the National Anthem while Sami Bair and Jewel Niekamp displayed the American flag and colors.

Brent Puhl of Puhl Photography set his camera to capture each competitor’s fleet-ing run and the competition then began with the first place person on each team running first, then

the second place persons running second and building to the tenth place person on each team running last.

After the dust settled in the arena, Ohio “A” Team was leading the Women’s competition and Kentucky was leading the Men’s competition. Now, it was time to have some, more relaxing, fun! There was a Cornhole Tournament, Pee Wee Barrel Race with the kids running on foot around the barrels and Dog Races. Later in the evening Alspaugh Entertainment helped us party and dance the night away by playing music from all eras for young and seniors alike. Bob & Jolene Pavey showed us they can still shake a leg dur-ing “Rocky Top.”

Sunday morning came early for some, but everyone quickly got fired up for the final go of the competition. The stands were an array of color and the spectators were cheering for all they were worth when the competition was reversed with the tenth place person on each team running first, then the ninth and so on until the first place person on each team ran last. The competitions were close and the stands were roaring as the final runs decided the winners of this year’s competition! Awards were presented and pho-tographs were taken by Jill (Colson) Swank of So Swank Photography in front of a barn siding back drop.

The weather has turned cold here and I am spending more time in front of the computer. (Not as much

time as I spend in front of the fireplace, though!!)

This month I have to say that I am only a little surprised. I mean, I had a feeling that it was only a matter of time before I would hear from another Jack Rusell (or two) who have decided to take up typing. I realize that we are a special breed and with our busy nature, it is only natural that I would not be the only JR to look for something productive to do when couped up in the house.

This past month I receeived two emails from fellow Jack Russell Terriers who have mastered the art of typing with paws. The first was a friend from my puppy days. We played together in Kentucky one year at the Midwest Match Race. Her name is Lily Long and she wrote me to let me know that her owner had found a grammatical error in last month’s column. (I used “there” instead of “their.”) I told her I appreciated her letting me know and pointed out that I need to stop relying so much on spell check......lol!

The second email came from a handsome looking fella who lives in Ohio. His name is “Oz” and he is from a Cowboy Mounted Shooting

family. He even sent me a picture. (Check him out, isn’t he cute?) I am not sure if he has learned to attach files to emails yet, or if he had a little help from his owner. I’ll have to find out.

I have to say that I am a bit smitten with this charming cowboy. I don’t want to embarrass him, but I’ve copied and pasted his letter beside his picture for you to read. Yes, I can copy and paste. I’ve got to stay a step ahead of the other JR’s that have taken up typing.

Until next month....I’ll be trying to figure out howto use that mouse..... Stay warm.....

Hey Bella, You know, you are quite a BABE! I have been checking out your profile in the Horse Resource every month. I read you are part of a Barrel Racing family (what ever THAT is?). I'm in a Cowboy Mounted Shooting family, we ride horses and shoot guns just like the REAL Cowboys of the Old West. I'm sending you a picture of me...pretty handsome, right! Actually this is my "Tuff Enough to Wear "PINK" outfit, I won the "Tuffest Pink Puppy" award at the Breast Cancer Charity Shoot hosted by 1st Ohio CMSA this past weekend. Hey Girly... I'll have "my people" call "your people" and you & I can get to-gether for dinner sometime!

See ya around kid...OZ

As 2011 is about to close out, breeders everywhere begin to prepare for that exciting time of year when all the new foals are born. We have all giving our mares their rhinopneumonitis vaccinations at the prescribed times of 5,7 and 9 months and for those mares that conceived in early February or late January 2011, early December is the time to give these mares their basic prefoaling vaccinations of tetanus, encephalitis, flu, rhinopneumonitis and west nile virus. Depending on the history of the farm on which the foals will be born and how much immunity we want the new foal to get from his dam’s colostrum, the mare may also be vaccinated for strangles, roto virus and botulism. All these vaccines raise the antibody level that will be present in the mare’s colostrum. They should be given four to six weeks before the foal is due to be born. Some of the vaccine protocols involve giving a series of two or more

vaccinations given in the prefoaling period so it is important to start the process with the time sequence of each vaccine protocol in mind.

Since ingesting the mare’s colostrum is the foal’s only way of obtaining immunity to deadly diseases such as tetanus and eastern encephalitis and diseases that can cause death or at least sickness such as flu, EHV1 or rhinopnemonitis, roto virus, botulism and strangles it is imperative that these vaccinations be given as part of the preparation for foaling. Along with making sure the mare is vaccinated properly we need to make sure she has the proper nutrition during her entire pregnancy but especially in the third trimester which is when most of the growth occurs. It is during the last trimester that the mare has the greatest demand for nutrients. A proper amount of protein, essential vitamins and micronutrients are vitally important to intrauterine growth of the foal and to getting the foal off to a healthy and strong start. Proper nutrition also helps insure that the mare has the body condition to promote adequate milk production and to breed back on foal heat. During early pregnancy the mare has the ability to divert an adequate supply of her own nutrients to the foal but in later pregnancy the demands of the developing fetus cannot be met if the mare is on a marginally adequate or inadequate diet. The nutritional level of the mare can greatly influence the health of the foal at birth. In general the mare should be fed a good quality mare and foal feed along with a good quality hay mixture which meets the protein and calcium/phosphorous requirements for a gestating mare. An example of this mixture would be an amount equal to 2% of the mare’s body weight with about 33% to 50% being an excellent quality legume such as alfalfa or perennial peanut hay. In those ratios the correct calcium/phosphorous ratios are kept intact and the protein level is high enough to provide for growth of the fetus. Not only are total amounts of certain nutrients important but the ratios of the nutrients to each other are just as important. These ratios can come into play preventing such developmental orthopedic diseases such as OCD.

The next step is to have the mare at the farm where she will foal at least four weeks prior to foaling. This allows her to build colostral immunity to the germs at the farm. About two weeks before her due date make sure that if she has a caslick’s surgery that the caslick’s is taken out. This will prevent her from tearing her reproductive tract during the foaling process. This is about the time we install a foal alarm and start monitoring her for birth of the foal. The foal alert allows us to be at the mare’s side within two minutes of the time the birth process begins. Assuming the birth is normal, the foal needs to nurse within three hours and the placenta needs to be passed within four hours of birth. The foal’s navel is dipped into 25% chlorhexidene solution every few hours until it dries up. An IgG antibody level is determined from a blood sample from the foal at 24 hours of age. If the antibody level is too low we give the foal hyperimmune plasma to get the antibody levels to the correct levels.

In order to give the mare her best chance of conceiving on foal heat, we give the mare oxytocin every few hours post-delivery to help expel any blood and contamination in her uterus from the foaling process. About 48 hours post foaling a 5 liter uterine flush with lactated ringers solution helps clean the uterus and helps it involute to its normal size. Depending on how fast the flushing fluid that comes out of the uterus clears up, the uterus is flushed with 1 to 5 liters of

Preparation for Foaling and Rebreeding on Foal HeatArticle By Dr. Steve Fisch, DVM

Page 33: The Horse Resource December 2011 Issue

Page 33

Preparation for Foaling and Rebreeding on Foal Heat LRS every day to every other day until she is in foal heat. If her delivery was normal and her uterus is normal size and the uterine flush is clean then the mare is bred on foal heat as long as she ovulates on day 10 or later post-delivery. The chances of conception when breeding earlier

than on a day 10 ovulation are much less than when the uterus has had at least 10 days to involute. A normal birth, uterine flushes and oxytocin injections are vitally important to getting the mare to conceive on foal heat.

If everything goes well, you will have a healthy pregnant mare with a healthy foal by her side when the mare is ultrasounded two weeks later and you will have effectively backed the foaling date up by two weeks for the mare’s 2013 foal. Foaling time is a very exciting time. Attention to details can be the key to having a healthy mare and newborn foal.

This cowgirl was especially surprised at the CMSA Awards Banquet, as I was inducted into the CMSA Hall of Fame! What an honor to be included in the company of, and introduced by, the founder of this incredible equine sport, Jim Rodgers, CMSA #1. To be named as a person among the few “Who’s-Who” of Cowboy Mounted Shooting was just beyond any of my expectations. To have been a part of the beginnings, growth and development of this sport over the past 13 yeas has been most important to me. I hope to be a Cowgirl Mounted shooter for lots of years to come and continue to be involved in the new avenues of development and successes of Cowboy Mounted Shooting. And I will certainly wear my CMSA Hall of Fame Buckle with pride and passion.

Indiana Rough Riders

Howdy All!

The 2012 shooting season is now upon us and IRR has elected their 2012 officers. President- Bryan McDonald, Vice President- Ben Butler, Treasurer- Marsha Butler, Secretary-Kathy McDonald,

Board Members include: Ann Woulms, Todd Woulms, John StClair, Joyce McKinney, and Russell Case. Congratulations to all!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

This month for our” Member Spotlight” I would like to introduce IRR member Marsha Butler. Marsha was our 2011 and is our now current Treasurer and has been an IRR member for several years.

Marsha was raised in the city and knew from the very first time she saw a horse that she wanted one of her own. As a child, she would ask for a horse every Christmas and birthday but never found one under the tree or in a gift wrapped box. As soon as it was possible she moved to the country and

bought her first horse and has owned one ever since. Marsha loves everything about horses, the riding, feeding, grooming, watching them run in the pasture, and would much rather muck a stall than clean a house.

Marsha’s husband Ben started shooting about a year and a half before she did. Marsha resisted Ben’s pleading for her to start shooting using the argument that she didn’t have the skills and wasn’t coordinated

enough to do such a thing, but like everyone else, she gave in, tried it and was hooked. Marsha started competing in 2005 on her good horse, Dillon. With Dillon she was able to advance to a level

three shooter then decided to retired him. Retirement didn’t set too well with Dillon and he has returned several times to help other new shooters get started. Last year at the age of 30 Dillon helped Lynn Hanes win the ladies level one class at the Indiana State Shoot. Dillon was replaced with her current shooting horse, Stormy, palomino paint she purchased from Kay and Don Burress. The last two years have been a little tough on Marsha and her horse

activities. In July 2010 she broke six ribs and was unable to ride or compete for most of the summer. This past June Marsha broke her femur and is still recuperating. Even though she was on the IRR list of “the injured, the broken and the sick” Marsh attended several shoots. Although she really missed competing she enjoyed traveling with Ben and visiting all of her Cowboy Mounted Shooting family.

The things that Marsha likes best about Cowboy Mounted Shooting is the fact that every run is something different, unlike barrels and poles, you never run the same pattern twice at a shoot. She also likes the attitude of her fellow shooters. Everyone is friendly and unbelievably helpful. She states “in what other sport will your fellow competitor lend you their own equipment or even a horse so you can go out and try to beat them?” She also likes the fun “Old West Outfits” that you get to wear. Marsha, IRR wishes you well in recovering from your injuries and good luck in the future!Well that’s all for this month. Be sure to check the next issue of Fast Horse Resource for upcoming IRR events and more member spotlights!

Well, that’s all for this month.Keep those cylinders a spinnin’ and God Bless!

I asked random barrel racers this question: What is your favorite Christmas memory or tradition? What do you want for Christmas this year?

Kelsie Meeks, 18Blanchester, OHChristmas tradition is to wake up at 5:00 a.m. to do presents with mom and dad even though I am 18. New boots is what I want for Christmas.

Cody Bryant, 19Columbus, INFavorite memory was I got my first pony named "Shotgun".I would like a new horse for Christmas.

Casey Sparks, 16Solsberry, INM y f a v o r i t e memory is when my cousin, Clint and I slept under the Christmas tree with signs laying on us telling Santa what we wanted for Christmas. (I

wanted stuffed animals and he wanted a boflex). We did get our gifts ,but my brother got up in the middle of the night and very sneeky took our signs and wrote underneath them "no", so when we woke up we read our signs we was kind of disappointed but only for a second.. (haha brother, Justin)I want a truck or car for Christmas. Jasmine Hudgens, 17Bedford, KY In 2009 my parents got me a digital camera and my best memory was my parents got my brother a cell phone and called it and the package rang.I would like a Charlie One Horse Cowboy Hat

Shelby Longaberger, 18Coshocton, OHMy tradition is I get to open one present on Christmas eve.I would like a Macbook this year.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS Hey!! Congress has came and gone, I did place in the youth. What an unbelievable sweepstakes, Lance Graves and Pete Oen tied for the Championship and had to have a run off. Pete knocked over a barrel (he ran first) and Lance ended up winning. Had a great time but ended up with the CONGRESS CRUD.. I was sick for about three days but did manage to go to college. Pull out the boots, warm coats and gloves because its time to show indoors and freeze. Good to hear some barrel racers bought Cloverdale Arena (Carl and Cindy Harlan) so we have a good arena to show in this winter.

Clint is an 18 year old recent graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trent-man. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, had to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes, placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1d in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

Haley Dick, 16Lafayette, INMy favorite Christmas memory is going to my grandparents house on Christmas Eve. All of us kids got $50 each. Alot of my family was there, and their house was small and warm. They always decorated the house with little elves and reindeer.I want surprises this year.

We even sing Christmas carols if we feel the need.

Brooke Gehl, 18, Celina, OH My favorite memory was my pony "Scooby", and my favorite tradition is playing catch phrase with my crazy family. This year I want all my family to be together.

Almberly Liter, 18,Madison, INMy favorite Christmas memory was when I was five years old. My mom and dad told me that for my big present, we had to go out to our barn. My dad went before me, and before I could

walk into the barn, he led out a Shetland pony; his name was Stumpy. Stumpy was my first pony, and I mounted that little thing just as soon as my dad could get my saddle on him. The very same day, not even fifteen minutes later, Stumpy bucked me off; However, I wasn't shaken and jumped right back into the saddle after my dad caught him. This year for Christmas, I would love some slinkies for my horses; the burrs are getting to be too much of a pain for me to take out every time I ride!

I hope everybody has a blessed holiday. From my corral to your corral "Merry Christmas"!

Rodeo Newsfrom the

Indiana High School Rodeo Association

A spooktacular Halloween weekend was had by all par-ticipants and families of the I.H.S.R.A. at the Kentucky High School Rodeo Invitational held at the WKU Ag Expo Center on October 29th and 30th, in Bowling Green Ken-tucky. Teams from Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee put on quite a display of rodeo talent while enjoying Hallow-een themed grand entries, a state egg toss competition, and a chili cook-off.

It was no disguise; Team Indiana had their game faces on at this rodeo and made quite an impact on the scoreboard! Notables from the weekend were: Casey Dean and Sarah Schneider both had outstanding weekends in Pole Bending – they finished 2nd and 3rd in the average for the weekend among 70 contestants!

Paul Lloyd scored a 77 on Sunday and Coleman Rude scored a 77 on Saturday which tied them both with Ryan McDaniel for 1st place in the average for the weekend in Bull Riding. The Barricklow brothers were 4th in the Team Roping Average and Strand came home with a 2nd place average finish in Calf Roping.

Katie George, Jessie Hoagland, Casey Dean, and Sarah Schneider all came home with top ten average finishes – Katie in Breakaway and Goat Tying, Jessie and Casey in Barrels, and Sarah in Goat Tying. All in all a pretty good weekend for Team Indiana – great job contestants!!!

Alison Hittle is a 17 year old Junior from Westfield, Indiana. Her parents are Chad and Amy Hittle and yes, she is Tylers sister! She also attends Westfield High School and is a 3 year member of the IHSRA. Allison competed in several events in Junior Rodeo, where she was a member for 7 years prior to coming to the High School Rodeo, but now her favorite events are Barrels and Poles that she runs on her horse Chick. Ali has future plans to go to college in the medical field and study to either to be a nurse or go into the chiropractic side of things. Either way she does not want to leave the rodeo scene. She would like to stay around rodeo and use her medical train-ing to help injured cowboys and cowgirls. Watch out Justin Sports Medicine Team!

Ali told me she enjoys participating in the IHSRA because it is such a good experience and she gets to meet people, and make new friends, from all over the United States.

Her most memorable rodeo moments would be when she won the State Finals All Around in Junior Rodeo and all the times she used to play “chicken” with her dad in the arena. When Ali was younger she needed a little coaxing to run all the way past the timer line, so her dad would lead her in and stand at the end of the arena and tell her to play chicken with him on her way back across the timer line! dent and I take pleasure in the experience of being a part of the decision mak-ing process of our association.”

I.H.S.R.A. Member SPOTLIGHT

Tyler Hittle is from Westfield, Indiana and is one of our se-nior members this year. He is an 18 year old senior at Westfield High School and a 4 year member of the IHSRA. Tyler is no stranger to the rodeo scene. He spent 8 years in the Indi-ana Junior rodeo before joining the high school rodeo and he also competes on the open circuit from time to time. Tyler’s parents are Chad and Amy Hittle, and his sister Alison also competes in IHSRA.

Tyler’s favorite horse is “Diesel” and his favorite event is Calf Roping. This is one event he has competed in and has done very well at for several years. He hopes to continue calf roping on a collegiate level, and since college is right around the corner for Tyler, he is looking into Oklahoma Panhandle and the Nebraska College of Technical and Agriculture. Both colleges have rodeo teams that he would like to compete on.

I asked Tyler what he liked the most about participating in the IHSRA, and he told me he likes seeing everyone and hang-ing out with friends. He also likes the opportunity the High School Rodeo Association gives of participating on a National level and everything that entails.

Tyler told me his most memorable rodeo moment to date is that he has qualified and participated at Nationals two consecu-tive years.

The Veedersburg rodeo held on September 24-25 at the Fountain County 4-H Grounds was a lot of fun. The Banta, Hunter, Eastep, and Zimmerman families did a great job of hosting the rodeo and putting to-gether a silent auction and of course the annual Veedersburg chicken scramble! Saturday’s rodeo went really well for Blake Andis, who won the Breakaway Roping and the Step Down Calf Roping in his age division. Tyler Cagel had a quick throw in the Chute Dogging to win with a 3.006 on Saturday. Alyssa Griffiths smokin’ 21.868 Pole Bend-ing run certainly earned the top spot in the 6-7-8 Poles. All of the IJRA contestants did a great job and made all of us proud of your ac-complishments.

On October 9-10th, the Edinburgh ro-deo brought us all togeth-er again at the Hoosier Horse Park. Edinburgh’s Saturday per-formance was d e s i g n a t e d as a Tough Enough to Wear Pink day by our IJRA Prin-

cess, Lois Thomas. Lois did a great job organizing the event and IJRA was able to donate the money raised through a coffee and baked goods table.

Pink kids, ponies, and horses were seen every-where as they raised Breast Cancer awareness. Cade Morris made his first mutton busting ride and won the Saturday Edinburgh rodeo to put his name on the score board and in the stand-ings. Fellow IJRA K-1-2 contestant, Gunnar Eastep, had a 67 point ride on Sunday in the Mutton Busting to place first. Kolt Keller won the Step Down Roping on Sunday, adding to his All-Around points and event placing. Mad-elynn Farris had a great catch in the Break-away roping on Sunday as well.

Thank you to Darla Crismore for putting to-gether a goat tying/barrel racing clinic lead by past IHSRA member Brittany Molden. A special thank you goes out to the White family who welcomed everyone to their arena with open arms and food! Brittany did a wonderful job with all of the kids. Everyone learned a lot and had a really good time over the weekend. Thank you, Brittany for offering your time and skills to pass on the rodeo tradition to our youth.

IJRA News

Member SpotlightThe Banta Family - Waynetown, Indiana

The Banta family from Waynetown, IN is in the spotlight this month. Jeff, Katrina, Jordan, and Madison have been part of IJRA for many years. Jeff has served on the Board as well as

volunteered many hours as the Arena Director, helping our rodeos to run smoothly and safely. Katrina is also a Board Member, serving as the Rodeo Secretary, and has had a big job of keeping track of rule book changes, entries, points, and much more for all of us. Thank you Banta family for all you have done for IJRA over the years.

Jordan currently competes in Chute Dogging, Calf Roping, Team Roping, Ribbon Roping, Goat Tying, Breakaway Roping and Bull Riding. He has been an IJRA member for nine years and has done just about every event that is offered. Jordan is also a member of the Cinch Junior High Division team for Indiana and has competed at the National Finals in Gallup, NM. Jordan’s goal for this year is to qualify for the Junior High National Finals in New Mexico in as many of his events as he can this year and make it back to the Short Go. Jordan said that in his experience at the National Finals the past two years, he has found that it’s not easy competing against some of the people from the other states. His goal this year is to go out there and have personal best times and scores and just hope that they put

him in the Top 20 after two rounds. Jordan thought that being part of Team Indiana last year and winning the National Tug of War Championship was pretty cool and made for some great memories.

Madison is a K-1-2 cowgirl who likes IJRA because she enjoys the events that she com-petes in. This 1st grader is currently sitting in the #1 spot in the Chute Dogging after having four 1st place wins so far this rodeo season. Madison says that Chute Dogging is her favorite event because when she gets mad she can take it out on the steer instead of her brother. She says that she is a good chute dogger because she has watched her brother compete in this event for so long. Madison may have gotten some help from her brother over the years, but she definitely has put in her own hard work to get her to the top spot.

Jordan and Madison would like to thank your parents for taking us to all the rodeos and

Grandma and Grandpa for helping sponsor us all these years. We would also like to give a big Thank You to Todd and Amy Yundt for all the help they give us as well.

Simple enough, right? How many “city slickers” do you know that have watched a barrel race and then said, “That doesn’t look too hard. I think I could do that!”? That’s when we want to put them on a barrel horse and say, “Have at it!” Then watch them eat some dirt, but we don’t…because we know it’s not as easy as it looks.

So, if someone came to you and wanted to start running barrel horses, what would your first offer of advice be? Would it be to make sure that they have horsemanship skills? If they can sit a horse pretty good, then do they have the means to get a decent barrel horse to start out with? There are many other steps to be taken…including learning the barrel pattern. One right and two lefts or one left and two rights. Either way is with a lot of run in between and finally back home.

I’ve said all that to say this: A barrel pattern can be kind of a map for our life here on earth. Let me elaborate a little.

Let’s start with the first barrel; we all start out headed in the same basic direction. Then, right off the bat, we can have lots go wrong if we get off course. We may head down the pen too far or even go down the fence. We may run right over top of the barrel, just get by it a little or turn too tight and drag it over. Likewise, there are many directions our younger years can take us, some good, some not so good. We should all learn from our youthful mistakes and still be looking ahead to what our future holds. We can’t dwell on the past, we have to move on and use what we learn to be better. And most of us do get through and move on to the next barrel.

The second barrel is usually the toughest to master and if our first wasn’t the best…then it’s likely to throw us off on our second a little. There is still a chance for a great second barrel if we work hard to get where we are supposed to be. The second can be the prettiest barrel of a run and it’s usually the one we will have memories of because the photographer

is sitting there to take our picture as we turn. Likewise, “middle age” is most likely the best time of our lives. Most of us will get married, have kids, and establish ourselves with our friends and careers. This is also when we become the person everyone else will remember. We will have more memories ourselves of this time in our lives as well. Hopefully we’ve finished our second barrel nicely and can ease right up into the groove of our third barrel.

The third barrel is the easiest one to get, especially if we’ve had a nice second barrel. Just run up into the pocket kicking and don’t look back. It’s the smoothest turn and usually by that point of the run, we’ll know what kind of run we’re getting. Hopefully we’ve made the right moves and can be in a great position to head home. We’ll enter our senior years with a little more ease and knowledge of what’s behind us. Plenty of wisdom we will have gained from the years before. We should have our plans laid out and know the rest of the path we need to take to get “home” in our lives too.

Running out of the pen for home has got to be the best part of a barrel race. The pressures off, the wind in our faces, running as fast as we can go with a partner we trust. Everything behind us, good or bad, we forget about it at that time and just enjoy the ride. Knowing where we are going and focusing on nothing but that finish line. What a rush! That’s what it should be like when our time comes to go “Home” with our Heavenly Father. We should be ready and with no looking back, head to that finish line with a partner we love and trust…Jesus.

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore, I do not run like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. 1Corinthians 9:24-27

I got really excited when I wrote this, it just seemed to come so easily…maybe because I’ve ran so many barrel patterns in my life! I hope this will give you all something to think about.

Until next month.... I hope everyone has a nice run as we all continue “racin to eternity!” Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa

Three Turns & HomeCHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION w/ Christa Conway

Last & most important thought…

Salvation is a gift and a choice......Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice. When He was resurrected on the 3rd day, he defeated Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death and acknowledge it with our words. If we believe that and accept Him as our personal savior…we are promised eternal life with Him in Heaven. You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to believe your way there. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

Now Cloyd we’ve been pardsGoin` on fifteen yearsWhy we’ve rustled cowsAnd had our share of beers

But in all my born daysThis beats all I ever seenYou’re goin` fishin`With a Nazarene

I was with you pardAnd heard that ol` foolHe wearin` hairy clothesAnd he smelt like a mule

When he held you underHe called it baptizedPard I can’t believe You listened to his lies

Why you can’t leave meTo go fishin` with that dudeWe’ve got a string to breakAnd they’re a waspy brood

Cloyd stood to his feetPulled his hat down tightSaid yep we’re pardsBut I’ve seen the light

I’m goin` fishin` nowHe said with a grinWhat I’m fishin` forAre the souls of sinful men Yep pard I’ve held my tongueLike reins on a runaway hossBut it’s time to turn it looseCause I have a new boss

That preacher at the riverTold me of a better wayNo need to go to hellSo this is what I pray

I pray you’ll accept ChristRepent of your sinful pastBuild up treasures in heavenCause they’re the ones that last

Yep pard I’m a fishermanThat’s what Christians doI just casted the netI pray my first catch is you

Matthew 3:1-6In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey. Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan, And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.Luke 5:10 And so was also James, and John, the sons of Ze-bedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.

Still no winner for this mystery. Pictures of this all-around cowgirl were taken sometime in the late 60s or early 70s. The barrel racing picture was taken by a photographer named Jerry Johnson in Chicago, Illinois and the goat tying picture was taken in Shirley, Indiana. She was very active in the barrel racing and rodeo events and is one of the few (and maybe the first....little help here??) ladies from east of the Mississippi to qualify for the NFR. She was also one of the minds behind the creation of some of the barrel racing organizations still around today including the Midwest Match Race. (Read more about this year’s Match Race in this month’s issue.) Our cowgirl still loves to attend the barrel races with friends and has remained involved throughout the years.

Correctly identify our mystery cowgirl, horse(s), years, location.....give us as much information as possible to win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource, a “Horsey Hat” or a “Horsey-T.”Please send us your photos from the past....we’d like to use them in our Mystery of the Month. Horses, people, events, etc... Send via email to: [email protected] or mail to The Horse Resource 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302 We will return your original photos to you.

No Winner Yet for Mystery of the Month

We Have A Winner....Bonnie McCammon of Sullivan, Indiana knew that our mystery rider was Ross Carnahan. Ross is riding in the Rescue Race and picking up Bernard Wieling at a show in Bicknell, IN in the 60’s.

Bonnie chose to extend her subscription to The Horse Resource.

Taylor Wieling and Cecelia Mayhew knew the correct identity of the cowboys.
