In Out Of Conference PlayTOLEDO: April 1, 2014: – The Hilltop

Cadets hit the road on April 1, taking on Toledo Rodgers in non-conference action. The Cadets outgunned Rodgers 19-7 with Chad Champion, Justin Grapengeter, and Justin Ashenfelter each posting a three RBI performance.

On the mound for the Cadets, Logan Brooker recorded the win, pitching 3 2/3 innings, recording 7 strikouts while giv-ing up 6 hits and allowing 7 runs. Chad Champion cleaned up, coming in and clos-ing out the game, recoding 3 strikeouts while allowing 1 hit.

Zach Roehrs, Champion, Grapengeter and Ashenfelter each recorded 2 hits, while Miklo Abner blasted on over the fence for Hilltop. Also contributing for the Cadets, Quinn Smith scored 3, while recording a stolen base; Champion scored 4 along with 3 stolen bases while teammate Grap-engeter crossed home plate 3 times while logging 2 stolen bases. Issac VanArsdalen also had an RBI off of 1 hit for Hilltop.

MONTPELIER: April 1, 2014: – The Montpelier Locomotives played host to GMC visitor Hicksville on April 1, falling 5-0.

For the Locomotives in the loss, Parker Houk recorded the Locomotives only hit of the game, recording a single. Josh Lewellen

went 5 innings on the mound, recording 7 strikeouts while giving up 5 runs. With the loss, the Locos fall to 0-2 on the season.

Cadets Open Up 2014 Season On The Road At GMC

Power Ayersville; Fall 7-0AYERSVILLE: March 31, 2014: – The

Hilltop Cadets opened up the 2014 season on the diamond, traveling to Ayersville for a non-conference tilt, with the Pilots on March 31, falling to the host Pilots 7-0. The Cadets recorded 3 hits in the game off of red-hot Pilot pitching, while defensively committing 2 errors.

On the mound for the Cadets, Jalen Towers went two and two thirds giving up 2 earned runs while recording three strikeouts. Miklo Abner, went the remain-

ing two, allowing 5 runs and setting down three. Offensively for Hilltop, Quinn Smith connected for two hits, while Justin Ash-enfelter logged the remaining hit for the Cadets on the game.

Hilltop will hit the road for a game with Toledo Rodgers on April 1 before returning home to host Antwerp.

North Central Eagles Open 2014 Campaign; Host Out Of Conference Foe Archbold

ARCHBOLD: APRIL 1, 2014: The North Central Eagles opened the 2014 baseball season, hosting Archbold from the NWOAL on April 1. The visiting Blue Streaks pulled away and recorded an opening win 8-1, despite a solid opening day offensively for Clayton Ferguson, who hit for two doubles with the sole RBI of the game.

On the mound for the Eagles, Brandon Turner went six, giving up seven hits and

six runs. Dylan Hutchinson also went two innings, allowing three hits and two runs in the loss. Offensively for the Eagles, in addition to Ferguson’s impressive output, Colton Pilmore and Jordan Reeves also re-cord hits, with each popping a single.

Archbold Outlasts Pettisville Blackbirds 12-2 In Blackbirds 2014 Opener

ARCHBOLD: March 31, 2014: The Pet-tisville Blackbirds hit the road on March 31 to open the 2014 season, taking on NWOAL neighbor Archbold, falling to the Blue Streaks 12-2.

For the Blackbirds, Tate Kauffman was tagged with the loss, while Eli King saw ac-

tion as well. No additional stats were pro-vided for this game.

Wauseon Thrashes Pettisville Blackbirds 17-0 In Blackbirds’

Second NWOAL SetbackWAUSEON: April 1, 2014: The Pettis-

ville Blackbirds hit the road on April 1 for their second contest against an NWOAL team to open the season, running into a Indian scoring machine that shut the game down in the 5th with a 17-0 explosion.

For Wauseon in the win, Suntkin and

Kauffman went 4-4 and 3-3 respectively with Suntkin blasting a round tripper.

In the loss for Pettisville, Christian Barhite and Dustin Nofziger spent time on the mound trying to contain the Indian on-slaught, but gave up a combined 15 hits and 17 runs.

The Rossford Bullldogs used a run in the third in-ning and four in the fifth in-ning to hold off a late charge by the Wauseon Indians for a 5-4 victory in the season lid lifter.

The fifth inning saw eight Rossford batters at the plate. Spencer Shultz made it to first base on an error by Jacob Newlove. He later was out at second on a defensive play by Peyton Shadbolt who flipped the

grounder to Ty Suntken for the tag. With Noah As-mus on first, Ryan Niese hit a single to put Bulldog runners on first and third. Niese then stole second. Wauseon’s starting pitcher, Clay Tefft walked Ryan Reed to load the bases. An error by Newlove to Josh Kauff-man allowed two runners to score and the Bulldogs were up 3-0. Ben Sauder batted in Erik Davis to put the Bulldogs up 4-0. Ross-ford’s fifth run came on a passed ball by Tefft. Peyton

Shadbolt then relieved Tefft and got the Indians out of the inning with a pop up by Trey Demko.

Before the dismal fifth inning, Tefft pitched a solid game fanning seven Ross-ford batters over the first four frames.

The Indians responded in the bottom of the fifth with a single by Shadbolt to start the inning. Ty Sunt-ken walked and Newlove reached base on a error to load the bases for the Indi-ans’ rally. An error by the Rossford first baseman al-lowed Kauffman to reach second and more impor-tantly allowed two Wauseon runs to score. The inning ended a swing later with an out by Caleb Andrews.

The Indians used a dou-ble play and a Shadbolt strike out to end the Bull-dog sixth inning. In the Indians half of the sixth, Shadbolt singled and Ty Suntken walked putting runners on first and sec-ond. But a Newlove fly out and a Axel Bueter strike out ended the Wauseon threat.

The Indians defense pro-duced a 1-2-3 seventh in-ning for Rossford. On their last chance to complete the come from behind win, Wauseon got a single to left from Tefft in the bottom of the seventh. With J.J. Kauffman pinch running for Tefft, he was able to steal second base. Andrews walked putting runners on first and second but the last chance for the Indians came up short when Brady Rupp popped up to end the game.

North Central Lady Eagles opened up their 2014 campaign on the diamond, traveling to Hicksville on March 31 for a non-confer-ence game with the Lady Aces. Hicksville, behind solid pitching allowed the Lady Eagles just two hits on the game and ex-ploded for 10, blanking North Central.

For the Lady Eagles, Makayla Hayes

and Reese Cogswell split duties on the mound, giving up 10 runs off of 8 hits. At the plate for North Central, Sabrina Pick-ford and Rachael Oxender each recorded singles for the Eagles two hits on the game.

Montpelier Lady Locomotives Turn Back North Central At Home

MONTPELIER: APRIL 1, 2014: The Montpelier Lady Locomotives recorded a non-conference victory on April 1, outgun-ning the North Central Lady Eagles 8-1 be-hind a solid effort on the mound by Senior Jessy Dechene.

Duchene went the distance for the Lady Locos, giving up only five hits while allow-ing just one run in the game. Offensively for the Locos, Taylor Wells and Christy Duchene combined for 4 RBI’s off of sin-gles while Sidney Houk blasted a double driving in a run. Also for Montpelier, Bre-anna Stein, Marinna Mercer, Jessy Duch-

ene and Mikalyla Schilt each singled.For the Lady Eagles in the loss, Makay-

la Hayes went six innings on the mound giving up six runs while allowing six hits. Alyssa Swank made an appearance as well, allowing just one hit and 2 runs. Of-fensively, Sabrina Pickford, Swank, Hayes, Abby Litzenberg, and Kelsie Sutton each had singles, with Sutton recording an RBI.

ville Lady Blackbirds hit the road on April 1, opening the rain delayed season for a non-conference outing with neighboring NWOAL foe Wauseon, falling to the Lady Indians 8-7.

For Wauseon in the win, Brooke Whip-ple recorded the win, allowing 5 hits and just one run in the win. Sam Norman also made an appearance on the mound for the Lady Indians. Offensively for Wauseon, Whipple blasted two singles and a dou-ble, while Tiffany King exploded for three singles. Olivia Banister lifted the eventual

game-winning homer with a two run shot.In the loss for Pettisville, Teagan Kauff-

man went the distance, giving up 8 runs on 15 hits, walking three and striking out two. Offensively, Amber Klopfenstein con-nected for a triple and a single, while team-mate Mallory Riegsecker chipped in two singles; Kauffman rounded out the hitting recording two singles.

Lady Panthers opened the 2014 season at home, playing host to the NWOAL’s Delta Lady Panthers, falling to the visitors 17-6.

For the Lady Panthers, Conner Varner went the distance on the mound, allowing fourteen hits and seventeen runs, while recording five strikeouts. Offensively for Stryker, Conner Sullivan smacked a triple

in the game, while Miranda Pegorch had a double and two singles. Also for the Lady Panthers, Varner, Sierra Walters and Mi-randa Maynard each hit a single in the loss.

the mound, allowing 11 hits and recording 3 strikeouts, with one walk in the game.

er panthers opened the 2014 season on a blustery and wind swept day at home, playing host to Wayne Trace in out of con-ference action, falling to the visitors 2-0.

For the Panthers, Parker Ruffer went four innings on the mound, allowing five hits and no runs. Brody Shock also threw two innings, allowing two hits and two

runs. Chad Ruffer generated two hits of-fensively, while teammates Parker Ruffer and Colton Benson each had a single on the game.

Clay Tefft both fired complete game efforts and the Wauseon Indians bats did the rest as the Tribe swept a doubleheader from Lima Shawnee on April 5, 2-0 and 6-3.Game #1

Suntken pitched a three hit shutout in the opening game, fanning 13 and walk-ing 3. Jacob Newlove roped a double, and Tefft, Axel Bueter and Nate Suntken each had singles for the Tribe.

Tefft went the route in game #2, al-lowing 3 runs, 2 unearned on 4 hits and 7 passes, whiffing 5. Nate Suntken had a home run and 2 RBIs, Josh Whitcomb plated a pair with a single, Jac Flory had an RBI base hit, Bueter had a pair of sin-gles, and Ty Suntken and Peyten Shadbolt each had a base hit.

Indians of Wauseon packed the bus and headed to Eastwood for an out of confer-ence showdown, but the Ladies from East-wood prevailed, setting Wauseon back 5-1.

For the Lady Indians, Sam Norman went four innings allowing three runs off of seven hits, while Brooke Whipple went

two, giving up two runs off of two hits. Of-fensively, Whipple went one for three, re-cording a single while driving in one run.

Hilltop Cadets ‘Little Big Horned’ By The Wauseon Indians In Doubleheader Sweep

WEST UNITY: April 5, 2014 – The Hilltop Lady Ca-dets carried a 2-0 lead over the Wauseon Lady Indians going into the sixth inning of their opening game on April 5. It was there that the Tribe unleashed the fury of their bats, turning the Lady Cadets’ victory into a scene from Custer’s last stand.

Brooke Whipple clob-bered a 2-run tater in the sixth to take the lead, then Ashley Smith followed up with another 2-run bomb in the seventh to give Wauseon a 5-2 win in the first game. The second game was an all-out assault by the Lady Indians as they wiped up Hilltop, 16-0.Game #1

Brooke Whipple went the route for the Lady In-dians, allowing 2 unearned runs on 9 hits. She had a single to go along with her 2-run homer.

To go along with her 2-run dinger, Alex Smith clocked an RBI double. Ol-iviah Hicks had a single and a double, Faith Hicks had a trio of singles, and Brianna Coblentz, Tiffany King, Alex Whipple and Jordan Sloan each had a base hit.

Jessica Suboski went the first 5 2/3 innings for Hilltop, allowing 3 runs, 2 earned on 8 hits and a walk, fanning 4. Bailey Funkhouser was tagged with 2 runs on 2 hits in 1 1/3 inning of work.

Brooke Chapin had a double for the Lady Cadets, with Adreyn Yates driv-ing in a run with a pair of singles. Shayla Coffman and Brittney Mocherman each had 2 singles, and Allie Schmitt and Sydney Schmitt each had a base hit.

Game #2As cold as the Hilltop

bats were, the Wauseon bats were the opposite in this lopsided event.

Sam Norman pitched 5 innings for the Lady Indi-ans, giving up 2 hits, strik-ing out 3 and walking one.

Brooke Whipple, Smith and Hayley Chamberlain carried the big bats for the Tribe in game #2. Smith and Chamberlain each hit a 3-run homer, and Brooke Whipple added a solo shot as part of going 4 for 4 with 2 doubles and a single. Hicks went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs; Alex Whipple went 2

for 3 with 3 RBIs, and King went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Norman plated a run with a pair of singles, and Banis-ter clocked a double.

Hannah Bleikamp got the start for Hilltop and was knocked out after giving up 7 runs, 5 earned on 4 hits and 2 walks, fanning 2 in 1 1/3 inning. Funkhouser again came on in relief, and

was beaten up for 9 runs, 6 earned on 10 hits and a walk, striking out a pair.

Mocherman and Chapin collected the only two hits for Hilltop.

FAIRVIEW: April 1, 2014: – Despite a tremendous effort by Lady Cadet Bailey Funkhouser on the mound, the Lady Ca-dets dropped a tight 2-1 decision to the Lady Apaches on the road on April 1. After two close non-conference outings the Lady Cadets sit at 0-2 on the season with a pair of home stands coming up before opening BBC action.

Funkhouser went the distance in the

game, going 6 innings giving up 4 hits and a pair of runs while recording 1 strike-out and just 2 base on balls. Offensively, LeAnn Joost, Brooke Chapin, along with Funkhouser each recorded hits, with Chapin scoring the lone Cadet run.

NC, Edon & StrykerSTRYKER: April 5, 2014 – The squads of Evergreen, Edon and North Central con-

verged on Panther Country to take on Stryker on April 5.In boys’ competition, the Vikings were able to outdistance the Edon Bombers for first

place with Evergreen placing first with 116.5 points and Edon in second at 92.5 points. North Central placed third with 24 points, and the host Panther Pack finished fourth with 5 points.

Evergreen escaped Edon for first in the girls’ division as well. The Lady Vikes rang up 72.5 points, compared to 66.5 for the Lady Bombers. Stryker finished third with 46 points, and North Central came in fourth with 36.5.

Individual stats for the event were unintelligible.
