Edon Bombers Celebrate Senior NightWith A Defeat Of The Hilltop CadetsEDON: February 21, 2014 - They're ri-

vals in the TAAC, and they're also rivalsin the BBC. The Edon Blue Bombers wel-

comed the Hilltop Cadets into The Hangar

for a Senior Night smackdown on February21.The story of the game was the Edon de-

fense. With the guards creating turnovers

and the Boys in Bomber Blue convertingthose turnovers into points, the frustration

for the Cadets mounted as quickly as theirdeficit. The game was physical, and be-

came chippy on more than one occasion. Alate Hilltop rally prevented the game from

becoming a BBC blowout as the Bomber

faithful enjoyed the Senior Night win over

the Cadet Cadre by a 59-44 score.

Kaden Sapp led all scorers with 18 for

the Bombers, with Mike Peeples adding 11

points and River Wicker 9. Jacob Brown

02-21-14 WAUSEON - The old adage

    that defense wins championships was

proven once again Friday night at the Bry-an Golden Bears defeated the Wauseon

Indians 72-65 to share the NWOAL crownwith Archbold.

The Indians ended the first quarter witha 10-10 tie thanks in large part to Kris

Boysel who score six of his team's points

with four coming from the foul line. The three-ball helped Bryan during the

second eight minutes as Kyle Rupp con-nected with a triple as did Austin Schim-

moeller. Thomas Martin pumped in eightpoints during the quarter to lead Bryan.

Meanwhile, the Indians continued to hit

foul shots as Bryan committed 10 first halffouls. Jacob Newlove hit six free throws,

Boysel had two and Corry Byers connectedon one as the Tribe kept the half time defi-

cit close at 30-24.Defensive pressure by the Golden Bears

reigned supreme as the second half began.

Wauseon had a tough go against the Bry-an press as the Golden Bears forced the

Indians into 21 turnovers for the game.Bryan outscored the Indians 18-8 during

the hole-digging quarter for the Indians. A

hole that they were almost able to crawlout of thanks in large part to Noah Castle.

After playing through three quarters andonly scoring eight points, Castle decided to

turn up his game and poured in 25 pointsin the final eight minutes. He made 9 of 11

foul shouts and put in eight shots in close

to close the Bryan advantage to a sevenpoint lead after the Bears had led by 16 at

the end of the third. The fourth quarter saw the Indians out-

score the Bears 33-24, but with the domi-nate third quarter the Bears were able to

hold on for the league championship win.

Seniors Corry Byers, Kris Boysel andAlec Lillich played in their final home game.

Boysel finished with 17 points, Byers add-ed three points and Lillich played, but did

    not score.Besides Castle's game leading 33

points, Jacob Newlove had nine points for

Wauseon, Zach Johnson had two and ZacRobinson finished with a point.

The Indians finished their season Sat-urday night at Rossford. Next up will be a

trip to the Division II sectional tournament

where they will tip it off for the second timethis season with the Napoleon Wildcats.

Pettisville Takes The Sectional Title In AHard Fought War With Stryker

    By Timothy KaysTHE VILLAGE REPORTER

    BRYAN: February 22, 2014 The

    state ranked BBC Champion Pettisville

Lady Blackbirds knew what they were upagainst when it came to their D-IV Sec-

tional title game against the Stryker LadyPanthers on February 22, as did the girls

in the ghting Blue and White. These twoteams have spent more time battling each

other for the top spot during the regular

and postseasons than most other teamshave had an opportunity...it's almost like

the Yankees and the Red Sox.Obviously the top priority for the Black-

birds was to contain the damage from thebig three seniors. Christie Huston plays

the pivot with grace and posts ten points a

game. Conner Varner is a 1,000-point ca-reer scorer, and nobody has a more quick-

er release on the three-ball than ConnorSullivan. The Pettisville defense did an ad-

mirable job on all three, but they were stillin for the ght of their lives.

Seems as though nobody had the name

of Lady Panther senior Ashley Haines downon the defensive to-do list.

Although she has not hoisted the longball as much on the Varsity squad as she

had done in her younger days, she hasalways been the silent but proven threat.

Against Pettisville, she broke her silence

and loudly announced that there was more

than just three missile launchers on herteam. Haines rained down a game-high vetrifectas and a team-high 15 points, but

Pettisville point guard Mikala Avina had acareer-type night, ringing up a game-high

23 points and orchestrating the Ladybird

offense back from a double-digit decit to a45-41 win to take the Sectional gold.

Anyone who knows anything aboutStryker and Pettisville knows that the

common thread between the two teams is

excellence in pressuring, turnover creatingdefense. Although neither team was able to

create the turnovers, the defense was stillpowerful, and in the ofng it was the Lady

Panthers who were able to get the upperhand with a 10-8 rst period run. Stryker

was able to press their advantage further

thanks to Haines work from beyond thearch, giving them a 27-19 lead at the inter-

mission. The wheels came off for Strykerin the second half though, and part of that

scenario was a third period stunner. The Lady Blackbirds had whittled the

decit down to just four points at 30-26

with 3:48 remaining in the third when di-saster struck Stryker. Huston was on her

way up for a shot from the left side of theinterior when she was fouled hard and

went down, injuring her left knee. Silencefell over the crowd as Huston was attend-

ed to by the Stryker staff, before she waseventually helped onto one foot and to thesideline. Her night was done, and her ab-sence in the middle and on the scoreboardwas something that the Lady Pantherscould not replace.

With the game hanging in the balancein the fourth, the Lady Blackbirds madethe most of their opportunities, hittingon 65 percent of their free throws. As theStryker lead disappeared, they had ampleopportunities to either tie or retake thelead at the line, but for the rst time inmany a moon, this fundamental failed

Stryker, they only had a dozen opportuni-ties at the stripe on the evening, but hit onjust ve...leaving seven points behind. Pet-tisville used their free throw opportunitieslate to ice the game.

Pettisville Head Coach Jason Waldvogelhad high praise for his point guard, Avi-na, but he also alluded to the fact that theteam was well aware of the war that theywere walking into. "It was a great win forus," he said; "we knew Stryker would comeat us hard."

Following Avina's 23 in the books forthe Ladybirds was Dana Fricke with 13points, Lauren Hostetler with 5, and AudraKlopfenstein with 4.

The loss ends the storied Lady Pan-ther careers of Natasha Pegorch, Varner,Haines, Sullivan and Huston, a fact notlost on an emotional Coach Steve Brown as

he fought back tears talking about his se-nior staff. "I can't say enough about thoseve kids that are walking out of that lockerroom," he said. "Those kids have been anunbelievable group. Christie Huston hascome so far from her freshman year. Ash-ley Haines battled back from a knee in-jury...and she was huge tonight. ConnerVarner is one of the most determined kidsthat we've ever had, the way she plays andcarries herself. Natasha Pegorch is a qual-ity kid who came and talked with me aboutnot playing this year. She's as much a bigpart of this team as anybody else. AndConnor Sullivan...we brought Connor Sul-livan up as a freshman along with ConnerVarner, and they grew together over theyears. We've just got great kids."

Sullivan followed Haines' exploits with11 points, while Varner nished with 9,

and Huston and Maddie Uribes each had3.

Pettisville will take on Ayersville in theopening round of District play in Archbold

    on February 27.

Hannah Bleikamp of the Hilltop Lady Cadets is awarrior.

    A warrior, as dened by the Merriam-Websterc onary, s, ...a person w o g s n a es an

is known for having courage and skill." The courageart has been obvious from her rst game in a Varity basketball uniform. For four years Hannah has

taken the ball on the high post, and fearlessly drivenra g n o e ear o e oppos ng e ense.annah has racked up over 1,000 career points inasketball. Her abilities with a softball bat and glove

have drawn the attention of several schools, one ofwhich, Sienna Heights, was fortunate enough to sign

er on oar . e a so raws s gn can a en onfrom opposing runners on the cross country course.Yes...Hannah has the skill part down pat.

A warrior is also a team player when called upon, forcing the opposition to make adjustments as theeamma es are ma e e er y e presence o e

warrior. That has been Hannah's intangible assetfrom her rst day, and it will be her legacy at Hilltop

igh School long after she graduates. She leads byexample and encouragement, inspiring not just thosew o surroun er as a eam, u a so ose w o aretill amongst the ranks of the elementary and junior

high.A warrior also lives by a code of conduct. Ethi

al behavior is important to the warrior, as appearnces can e cons rue as rea es o ose w o are

watching. Faith, loyalty, obedience, humility, reliability, mercy...these virtues are just some of the codesscribed to the warrior since the days of ancient

history, along with the aforementioned courage. Awarrior constantly renes their skills, often sacricing personal time in favor of practicing to the pointf physical pain, and beyond. The warrior does notomplain about the pain, though. As it is written in

the Reformation Era warrior code known as the Prusian Virtues, "Lerne leiden ohne zu klagen," which

translated into English means, "Learn to suffer withut complaining about it." Hannah ts all of these

warrior virtues to a tee.Still, there is something that separates Hannah

leikamp from others who would call themselves awarrior...something that only those closest to herever see. It is not found in the modern code of the

warrior, but it is as 'old school' as Christianity. Heartn emo on.. . ese are e corners ones a e neannah Bleikamp.

What drives Hannah to excellence? Her responseis simple..."My team." "They support me. If I put fearinto everybody else because they focus on me, then

ge s every o y e se on my eam open. s ere oreverybody." The effort begins well before the gameseven commence though, and it starts with the desireto improve and to rene her skills. She does this by,...going into the gym every day before games. Gettingn o e we g room ree mes a wee n e a .howing up for all the open gyms. Being able to beoachable." Compare her responses with the afore

mentioned list of warrior virtues. Notice the similarities?

s es y e s ar rom easy. s ar , annaaid with a smile. "You have to stay motivated, know

what you're doing, and stay dedicated." It's great tohave a role model to follow...a hero. Hannah's heartame to the fore when she described her heroes. "Myaren s are my eroes, s e sa . aus ng r e y oompose herself and hold back the tears, she contin

ued, "They went through a lot when they were younger, and they stuck with everything. They're just reallygood role models. They never let me quit anything;they always told me to keep going." Again pausingto regroup, she added, "They're just the perfect rolemodels."

As a role model herself, Hannah holds herself tohigh standard, and tells the elementary and junior

high girls who want to follow in her footsteps, "Don'ttop...don't ever quit. Work hard every day, and get

into the gym every day that you can." This applies tonot just what everyone sees her doing in the course ofompetition, but also in the classroom as well. While

taking a full course load at Hilltop, Hannah is alsotaking college courses at Northwest State. "I have veourses that I am taking at Northwest State," sheaid. "I have Humanities, British Literature, Trigo

nome ry, u r on an croeconom cs. e eseourses will help with the adjustment going into Si

enna Heights, Hannah says there is another reasonehind the extra academics. "It's something different;like change and experiencing different things. It's

more o a c a enge, u s un. may e un, uit too is not easy. "Time management is huge," sheays. Once she graduates from college, she wants to

nd a position as a athletic director and coach herwn eam.

aron c m , anna s oops coac or elast four years, saw the makings of the warrior codein Hannah when she was still a freshman, and hehas a fond memory of when he rst saw her in gamection. "I told her at the beginning of her freshman

year a was go ng o s ar er ou p ay ng unhe got comfortable, then we'd go from there to see

how it worked out," Coach Schmidt recalled. "In therst game, she started for the JV and went out andcored eight points in the rst quarter. She came offe oor, an o er, r g , go ge resse or

the Varsity game,' and she's never played another JV

minute." Laughing, he added, "She's been with meince then."Coach Schmidt expounded on Hannah's desire to

e coachable. When it comes to coaching her, he saysthat it has been, "...nothing but a pleasure. She's onef those girls who comes to work HARD every day.he's one of those girls who calls me and says, 'Hey,an you open up the gym this morning before school,'r 'Can I come in during an off period to shoot.' She's

really dedicated, and as a person she's a great personto coach...somebody you wish that you had a ton of.You have to understand though, people like her comeround every so often, and probably the best thingbout her is that the group of seniors around herre very supportive of her, and she's very support

ive of them. She thrives off of their success, not justher own. She's a great teammate, a great basketballlayer, and a great person."This then is Hannah Bleikamp. She is a warrior

who champions hard work, along with her family, her friends, her teammates and her school. She is

    warrior who exemplies everything that the paren s o o ays young g r s wou e o n n a ro emodel.

She is a warrior...with a heart the size of Hilltop.

Wauseon Lady Indians Are SectionalChampions, Taking Down Bryan 54-40

    By Mitch PeeblesTHE VILLAGE REPORTER

HICKSVILLE 2/22/14High octane of-fense was the key for the Wauseon Lady

Indians in their sectional nal win overthe Bryan Golden Bears. The Tribe set

the tone from the get go, and never looked

back, beating the Bears 54-40 to advanceto the district semi-nals.

Wauseons Haley Archibeque struckrst for the Indians, driving to the hoop

after only thirty seconds had come off theclock, giving Wauseon the early 2-0 lead.

The Golden Bears answered quickly, as

Hannah Schimmoeller, the Bears 1,000point scorer, nailed a shot, tying things up

at two a piece with 7:00 left in the openingquarter of action. Despite Schimmoellers

lift, the Indians came right back, as thiswould be the last time in the contest that

the Tribe would not hold a lead, as Sally

Frank scored for Wauseon only 15 secondslater. Frank was a key part of the Tribes

win, as she was constantly hustling, re-bounding, and ghting for 50/50 balls all

night for Wauseon, giving the Indians nu-merous extra possessions.

The Indians began what would be a

15-6 run over the next four minutes, put-ting Wauseon ahead 17-8 with 2:23 re-

maining in the rst, causing the Bearshead coach to call a timeout and regroup.

The Bear's momentum breaking attemptdidnt slow down the Indians too much, as

Wauseon went up 21-15 as the neared its

end. That was until Indian senior HannahBlaylock stole a pass from the Bears in the

closing seconds, and ran down the court, launching a 30 foot shot at the buzzer

which found pay dirt, giving the Indiansanother offensive spark, and putting them

ahead by a score of 24-15 at the end of the

rst quarter. It was much of the same in the second

stanza, as the Lady Indians offense keptup their fast pace, led by junior Natalie

Koenig. Koenigs quick feet and smoothball handling skills allowed her to nd

open lanes all throughout the rst two

quarters, scoring 13 points in the openinghalf of the contest. A 9-3 run was in store

for the Indians through the rst six min-

utes of the quarter, expanding their leadto a 33-18 margin. Sariah Yackees rstpoints of the contest came in second quar-ter, scoring four points in a span of lessthan two minutes, and helping Wauseonto take a 37-24 lead in to the locker roomat the break.

Any hopes that the Golden Bears had ofmaking a comeback in the second half werequickly quieted, as less than 25 seconds into the third quarter, Koenig launched anddrilled a three pointer, and the Indiansmomentum continued to roll. Before long, the Indians had earned a 20 point lead, asat the 5:53 mark of the third, Yackee hit ajumper, putting the Tribe up by a score of46-26. Wauseons biggest lead of the nightcame after Blaylock hit a layup with 1:30remaining in the quarter, putting the Tribeup by 22, leading 52-30. As the third pe-riod came to a close, it was Wauseon whowas rmly in control of the contest with a52-32.

The nal quarter of play saw the Indi-ans taking the air out of the ball, while atthe same time deating any Golden Bearcomeback hopes. The Tribe slowed thecontest down, passing the ball numeroustimes per possession and only shootingthe ball when they had a wide open look. The Bryan offense could do little to try andget themselves back in to the game, and asthe clock wound down to zeros, the score-board read 54-40 in favor of Wauseon, andthe Indians would be cutting down thenets as sections champions.

Koenigs 19 points led the way for theTribe. Maddie Richer and Blaylock bothwere able to put up eight points, HaleyArchibeque contributed seven, and Sa-riah Yackee and Sally Frank rounded out

the scoring for Wauseon with six points apiece.

With the win, the Indians move on tothe district semi nals on Thursday, Feb-ruary 27th in Paulding as they play the

Wildcats of Lima Bath High School.

Free Throws Spell The Difference In Sectional

    Final Between Fayette And Hilltop

    By Timothy Kays

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

BRYAN: February 22, 2014 The D-IVSectional championship game betweenthe Fayette Lady Eagles and the HilltopLady Cadets could be summed up in asingle word...parity. While the Lady Eaglesboasted a lineup that featured a starting

ve that had four girls that could hit fromthe concession stand and a pivot in Jes-sie Wheeler that is equally lethal in thepaint, the Lady Cadets' snarling defensewas an excellent compliment to an offensethat featured the inside-outside threats ofHannah Bleikamp and Emily Armbruster.Neither team was able to maintain a leadfor three quarters of play, until the fourth.Down the stretch, it was free throws thatmade the difference as Fayette repeated asSectional champs with a 56-49 win overHilltop.

The parity between the two teams goesback to the regular season. On January10, the defending BBC champion LadyEagles traveled to The Bunker and handedHilltop a 57-45 defeat. One month later, the Lady Cadets marched into Fayette andwith a 63-61 win not only squelched theLady Eagles' Senior Night celebration, they

also denied Fayette's run at a second con-secutive conference crown. This night wasa reset on a neutral oor, and a go for allthe Sectional marbles.

The Lady Eagles established their out-side shooting game early, and were gettingsolid contributions all the way around. TheLady Cadets had an answer for every runthough, and her name was Armbruster.Driving into the paint, she was able to con-nect on shots that appeared to be impossi-ble whilst drowning in a sea of Purple andGold. Hilltop held a 14-10 lead going intothe second, but the back and forth natureof the game put the Lady Eagles up by adeuce at the half.

When Hilltop took an 8-6 edge in thirdperiod scoring, the game went into thefourth period knotted at 36-36. It was inthe fourth period that the free throws be-came paramount, and the Lady Eagles'

not-so-secret weapon came to the fore inthe person of Taylor Grifths.

Readers of this newspaper will remem-ber a piece written about Grifths whileshe was still in the seventh grade. CoachJohn Winzeler told her of a free throwshooting contest sponsored by the frater-nal organization, the Benevolent and Pro-tective Order of Elks. Having been taughtthe art of free throw shooting by her father,John, Taylor went on to become the Ohiochampion, then move on to eventually n-

ish fourth in the nation. Of all the peopleto put on the foul line, Grifths is the oneyou do not want to see if there is the hopeof a miss, and for the most part she didn't.

Adding up the numbers from the eld,the game was squarely in the hands ofHilltop. The Lady Cadets had a 12-11 ad-vantage in two-point eld goals, and a 6-5edge in threes. Where the difference camewas at the line where Fayette had a 28-11 edge in opportunities. Half of the op-portunities for Fayette were in the handsof Grifths, who made good on eleven ofthe shots to insure the win. Of her 18 totalpoints, 11 came at the charity stripe, andmany of them were at clutch time.

Kaela Seiler joined Grifths with ateam-high 18 points for the Lady Eagles, while Alexis Fruchey hit for 8 points, andWheeler and Paige Keefer each contributed6.

With the loss came the nal curtain fora gifted group of Hilltop seniors in Blei-kamp, Armbruster, LeAnn Joost, KaileyCreamer and Kayla Settlemire.

"I really enjoyed coaching the girls thisseason," said an emotional Hilltop HeadCoach Aaron Schmidt. "I had a great groupof girls, from seniors through freshmen, and I can't say enough about the senior

class that I am losing...you don't replacegirls like that. You put people in. Peoplecome and people go...but you don't replacea group like that. There's a special place inmy heart for all those girls; they were ourleaders."

Fighting back tears, he continued,"They put it all out there. You respect thatas a coach, and you respect them as peo-ple. If they're going to put that much into abasketball game, then they're going to putthat much into their lives in being goodpeople and a good part of society. You ap-preciate people like that. You need to takethe time, step back and appreciate whatyou've got because sometimes, you cantake it for granted."

Armbruster closed out her career with agame-high 26 for the Ladies in Red, whileBleikamp hangs up her hightops witha 10 point game added onto her already

1,000-point plus career. Joost ended upwith 8 points, Creamer had 3 points andDestiny Denton had a deuce.

Fayette moves on to the Archbold Dis-trict where their rst test will come fromthe Holgate Lady Tigers.

    BRYAN: February 19, 2014 - The Fay-ette Lady Eagles opened the 2014 D-IV

Sectionals in a way that must have been

awkward. Their seminal game draw pit-ted them against the Montpelier Lady Lo-

comotives, coached by the man that justone year prior had led the Lady Eagles to

    BBC conference and Sectional champion-

ships, Tim Nicely. The Lady Eagles did their homework in

preparation for the game, put their emo-

tions aside, and focused on the task ofshutting down Hannah Blake and Bay-

Stryker Lady Panthers Defense Sties TheNorth Central Lady Eagles

    BRYAN: February 18, 2014 - The North

Central Lady Eagles and the Stryker LadyPanthers are certainly not strangers to

each other. These BBC rivals play eachother twice a year, and on February 18,

they squared off again in the seminals ofthe Bryan D-IV Sectionals.

It is common knowledge that the secret

to success in Stryker is a stiing pressuredefense that not only chokes out the of-

fense of the opponent, but also creates

turnovers which are quickly converted into

points on transition. The Lady Panthersramped up their defense early against the

Lady Eagles, using their opportunistic de-fense to rack up a 64-23 win.

Hilltop Lady Cadets Force An Early TournamentRetreat From The Edon Lady Bombers

    By Timothy KaysTHE VILLAGE REPORTER

BRYAN: February 19, 2014 The bigquestion in BBC girls' hoops this yearhas been focused on the opponents of theHilltop Lady Cadets. The question is, howdo you keep 1,000-point scorer and BBCPlayer of the Year candidate Hannah Blei-kamp in check...without allowing EmilyArmbruster to take you to the proverbialcleaners in the process?

For the third time in the 2013-14 cam-paign, the Edon Lady Bombers were tasked

with that 'pick your poison' conundrum asboth teams kicked off the D-IV Sectionalsin Bryan on February 19. The Edon de-fense held Bleikamp to just seven points inthe rst half, a job well done. The X-factorfrom Armbruster more than made up thedifference though, as she went off for 17 inthe rst half and a game-high total of 25as the Lady Cadets ran roughshod over theBelles in Bomber Blue, 73-40.

Edon's problems were not relegatedto their defense though; they also had tosolve the defense of the Lady Cadets, andthe pressure created more difculties forthe Lady Bombers. Despite racking up animpressive 12 points against the Hilltop'D', they turned the ball over six times inthe rst period, allowing the Lady Cadetsto jump out to a 19-12 lead that wouldnever be threatened. Hilltop Coach Aaron

Schmidt dialed back the pressure in thesecond period, but by that time the Run-ning Red put the baby to bed. Hilltop helda 36-21 lead at the intermission, and evenwith their JVs getting time on the oor, theLady Bombers simply were outgunned atevery turn, leading to the lopsided marginat the nal buzzer.

Bleikamp nished with 15 points insupport of Armbruster for Hilltop, withLe Ann Joost adding 8 points and Kai-ley Creamer 7. Felicity Jackson put in 5points, Cierra Grant had 4, Destiny Den-ton, Allie Schmitt, Bailey Funkhouser, Ka-

rissa Crisenbery and Julia Dunson eachhad 2 points, and Kenly Brown put in afree throw.

The Edon loss draws to a close the LadyBomber hoops careers of Baylee Gearhart,Jordan Matthews, Hannah Brehm-Gut-ting, Kaitlyn Manahan and Valerie Parrish.

The Lady Bombers nished the seasonwith a 3-19/0-10 mark. They were led byKaitlyn Sonneberger with 16 points, andGearhart with 9. Alex Kiess had 5 points,Kaitlin Chrisman 4, and Matthews, Brehm-Gutting and Shaylee Manahan each had adeuce.

At 160 lbs, the Indians Tre Campbell

Schuette blasted his way through the eld

taking down Aaron Rice from Vermillion inthe meets opening match by technical fall,

scoring an 18-1 victory. In second round

action, Schuette drew Wapakonetas HeathNewman. Schuette dispatched Newmanearly in the second period, recording a pin

at the 18-second mark into the period, and

securing a spot in the semi-nals againstTippacanoes Austin Robbins. Robbins put

up a good performance, but in the end,Schuette was able to put Newman on his

back and record the late 3rd period pin atthe 1:47 mark, securing a title berth in the

    Championship Round Saturday night. In

the match with Newman, Schuette suf-fered a minor injury, but with the State In-

vite in hand for next weekends IndividualState Tournament around the corner, as a

precaution, Schuette was held out of thematch and nished as a runner-up.

Also on the mat for the Indians at the

District Meet, at 106 lbs, Freshman An-drew Bailey went 2-2 for the weekend. Bai-

ley dropped his opening match to MadisonComps Mike Baumberger, losing a tight

match by the score of 9-5. With the loss,Bailey dropped from the Champion Brack-

    CONTINUATION OF WRESTLING ACTION

Montpeliers Sean Taylor Powers Through Day 2At BGSU District Meet; Earns State Berth

BOWLING GREEN: February 22, 2014 Inside the Stroh Center on the campus of

Bowling Green State University at the Divi-

sion III District Wrestling Meet on Satur-day morning, 4 wrestlers in the 126 pound

weight class were about to have their sea-sons ended in stunning fashion.

Montpelier Locomotive Senior, SeanTaylor, entered Saturday mornings ses-

sion fresh off a second round loss Friday

afternoon to Northwoods Devon Dunbar(32-8), who would go on to capture the 126

title, in a 12-4 major decision. Taylor wonhis opening match of the Meet on Friday by

gaining a 10-5 victory over Edison's AlexNeuberger, but in the second round of the

    Champion Bracket, Dunbar's major deci-

sion brought Taylor to 1-1 and dropped

Taylor from the Champion Bracket to theConsolation Bracket.

Taylors rst match of the Saturday ses-

sion vs. Western Reserves Nate Beal dem-onstrated the previous evenings loss was

absorbed as a lesson learned. Beal was

overwhelmed from the opening whistle asTaylor came out on re with aggressive

shots and an early period takedown result-ing in back exposure and a 5-0 lead. The

match ended early, with Taylor recordinga shutout 16-0 tech fall, and moving to

round three of the Consolation Bracket.

Seneca East Sophomore Dalton Blan-ton entered round three of the consola-

tion match with a 32-10 record, but onceagain, from the opening whistle, the Senior

Locomotive put Blanton on his heels withan immediate takedown and a near pin in

the opening seconds of the match. Early in

the second period, Taylor, for the secondstraight match, recorded a shutout tech-

nical fall with a 15-0 thrashing. Record-ing a shutout technical fall on the mat is

extremely difcult. Recording two in a row

with a wrestlers tournament life on theline is a demonstration of a senior wres-

tlers condence and focus on the task athand-reaching the state tournament.

Taylors victory placed him in the quar-ternal match of the consolation bracket

vs. Edgerton Junior Gabe Santa Rita, who

entered the match with a 38-9 record onthe season. At stake in the match was an

assured trip to Columbus and a match upin the nals of the Consolation Bracket for

3rd and 4th place. (Top 4 Wrestlers in eachweight class advance to the State Tourna-

ment). Taylor powered his way through the

match over Santa Rita, frustrating the Wil-liams County neighboring Bulldog at every

point in the match, and earning a hardfought 7-3 win, resulting in Montpeliers

lone state berth of the District Meet. With a trip to Columbus in hand, the

nals match up with Sophomore Trevor

Reed of New London, bringing a 45-10 re-cord into the nals was over in the blink

off an eye. Taylor once went on the attack, taking the Soph to his back immediately

and recording a pin 26 seconds into thematch, capturing a third place nish on

    the Meet.

Taylor will travel to Columbus onThursday, February 27 with a record of 35-

14, and tremendous momentum headinginto the State Tournament. Each weight

class at state features the top 16 DivisionIII wrestlers in the state, with the top four

qualiers advancing from the four Districtmeets held throughout Ohio on Saturday.Taylors 3rd place nish places him in the

top 12 in the state in Division III Wrestlingat his weight class, and Saturdays perfor-

mance was nothing short of complete dom-ination for the Locomotive Senior.

Also on the mat for the Locomotives in

the 160 lb weight class, Sophomore Jor-

dan Birdsall went 1-2 in the tournament, dropping his opening round Champion-

ship Bracket match on Friday night to

Chance Sonneberg (33-3) of Van Buren ina hard fought match. As the clock drained

to zero in the 3rd period, Birdsall came upshort, falling in a close 5-3 decision, and

dropping the Locomotive to the Consola-tion Bracket. Wrestling in the 1st round

of the consolations once again on Friday

afternoon, Birdsall drew Elmwood's NoahBaker, who entered the District Meet with

a 25-16 record on the season. At stake forboth wrestlers on the tournament was sur-

vival into day 2 of the meet. In the match,Birdsall attacked relentlessly, keeping

Baker on the defensive and walking away

with a 11-3 major decision, and surviving

the opening session.Birdsall entered day 2 of the tourna-

ment in the second round of the Conso-

lation Bracket paired against MonroevilleSenior Nick Tommas, who brought a 41-

10 record onto the mat. Both wrestlers

matched move for move throughout therst period and the second, with Tommas

clinging to a 2-0 lead. Tommas got the es-cape at the start of the 3rd bringing his

lead to 3-0, and Birdsall threw everythinghe had at the senior, but when the clock

drained out, Birdsall came up on the short

end and with the 3-0 loss exited the Dis-trict meet. With the loss and elimination

for the Meet, Birdsall closed out his Soph-omore campaign with a season record of

18-14.In the 182 lb weight class, the Loco's

Junior Hunter McKelvey brought a 28-18

record into the Meet and was matchedwith Mohawk Freshman Cole Drapper (29-

14). McKelvey wrestled a good match, butMohawk's Drapper kept the Locomotive

    off-balance with an aggressive attacking

style. The match logged 5 points on theboard for each wrestler midway through

the second period, but Drapper was able toput McKelvey on his back early in the third

and move ahead, coming out on top 10-5and dropping McKelvey to the Consola-

tion Bracket. In 1st round consolation ac-

tion, McKelvey then dispatched EastwoodFreshman Zane Zientek (17-19) at the 3:40

mark in the third period, putting the fresh-man on his back and gaining the pin to

survive and move onto Saturday's secondconsolation round.

    McKelvey's second round opponent,

Fairview's Sophomore Chase Carpenterentered the match with a 36-8 record.

Both wrestler's fought smart and aggres-sive throughout the 1st, but McKelvey got

in trouble late in the second when Carpen-ter was able to put the Loco on his back

and gain the pin with 12 seconds remain-

ing in the period, closing out McKelvey'sday and eliminating the Loco from the

Meet. McKelvey closed out his 2014 Juniorseason with a 31-21 record and good mo-

mentum heading into his senior season forthe Locomotives.

Montpelier as a team, with Taylor, Bird-

sall and McKelvey's performances at theBGSU Division III District Meet, placed the

Locomotives in 23rd place, out of a eld of52 teams competing. The NWOAL's Delta

Panthers took home the team crown, rack-ing up 280.5 points to outclass the second

place team (St. Paul) by nearly 200 points. Also from the NWOAL, Archbold placedfourth with 89 points.

The OHSAA Individual State Tourna-ment will take place in Columbus at the

Jerome Schottenstein Center on the Cam-pus of the Ohio State University beginning

on Thursday, February 27 with the open-

ing ceremony taking place at 3:00 p.m.
