Future Leaders
Our Year Six students leave for Sydney on Sunday morning at 7am to attend the Young Leader’s Con-ference in Sydney on Monday.
The conference has always proven to be an enjoya-ble and worthwhile experience for all who attend. We look forward to hearing about the two days in a future Gazette.
Year 11 & 12 Continue the Learning Experience.
Year 11/12 students will travel to Ariah Park tomor-row with a number of teachers to attend a RAP Study Day. These days are an excellent opportunity for all students to come together with their teach-ers. The face to face time and relationship building is important to the success of our partnership.
Spray Cans at School
A reminder that spray deodorant cans are banned from school grounds. A number of students and staff are highly sensitive to spray deodorants. These products can bring on severe headaches and asthma attacks.
Primary News Primary Students Learning Hard It’s been great over the past few weeks to enter each of the primary classrooms and see the wonderful learning taking place. The students at Barellan are certainly being provided with the best opportunities available to them and the staff are dedicated to presenting high quality, stimulating activities. Keep up the great work everyone!!!
Primary Staff Learning Hard Not only is it students learning hard, but also the staff. Miss Nicholls visited Griffith Public and Narrandera East Infants Schools last week to observe and learn about Language, Learning and Literacy (L3). Miss Nicholls very much enjoyed her time at the schools and has come back ready to trial as-pects of the program into the K/1 classroom.
This week, the Primary staff will be participating in a MOODLE session. Mr Whytcross will be assist our new staff with the basics of MOODLE, whilst extending the skills of staff already using MOODLE.
I will also be providing training to our new staff this week in Accelerated Literacy (AL). I am currently completing AL Tutor Training and therefore need to trial my tutoring skills and pro-vide instruction in the planning and programming process of the program.
Easter Parade Easter is quickly approaching and as with every year the Pri-mary Students will be participating in the Annual Easter Pa-rade. All parents of students in K-6 are invited to come along and enjoy the festivities on Thursday, 28th March at 10.15am. Join us under the COLA near the Library to see the wonderful creations from our students.
Extra Hands in the Classroom During the Parent Information Sessions, parents were asked if they were willing to come into the classroom and lend a hand with literacy groups, numeracy groups or Accelerated Reader (AR). We had a great response and teachers have timetable parents into different sessions throughout the day for assis-tance in implementing high quality, tailored lessons for our students. If there are any other parents willing to come in and assist in the classroom, please come in and talk to the staff and offer your time. If you do not feel comfortable with litera-cy or numeracy, any area where you can offer an extra pair of hands would be greatly appreciated.
This week’s Healthy Lunchbox Idea: Beef Burritos
Olive oil spray
200g lean beef strips
4 wholemeal flat bread (such as Mission Food Wraps)
2 cups shredded iceberg lettuce
2 Roma tomatoes, sliced
1 red capsicum, seeded, thinly sliced
1 carrot, peeled, coarsely grated
1 tablespoon sweet chilli sauce
Step 1
Lightly spray a large non-stick frying pan with oil spray. Place over high heat. Add one-third of the beef and cook, stirring,
for 2 minutes or until browned and cooked through. Transfer to a bowl. Repeat in 2 more batches with remaining beef.
Step 2
Place the wraps on a clean work surface. Top with beef, lettuce, tomato, capsicum, carrot and drizzle with sweet chilli
sauce. Wrap to enclose filling.

Literacy and Numeracy Tips for Parents When your child gets past the initial learning to read, write and basic mathematical concepts, it can be hard to know how to assist them with Literacy and Numeracy. Below are a few activities to help you child:
make your kitchen a ‘cooking’ zone and a ‘reading’ zone — use fridge magnets to make new words and short sentences, or have your child write the weekly shopping list and read names on packages
play word games and do crosswords to help develop spelling and vocabulary
count everything — toys, the number of pegs needed to hang clothes on the line and the number of buttons on your clothes
take your child on a ‘number hunt’ in your home or community — point out how numbers are used on everyday household items such as the telephone, or your house number in the street
talk about time — ask your child to check the time on the clock when they go to school, eat meals, watch their favourite television program and go to bed

Congratulations to Ben , the first person to achieve a Mathletics and
Spellodrome certificate in one week. Remember 1000 points earned in one week achieves a
Certificate.
No Hat, No Play - Some students are frequently forgetting their
hat. Lending hats is not a good habit because it can lead to
head lice problems. Students must remember their own hat
each day.

Ring Words
Home Reading When you are discussing the
pictures , ask your child to predict what they think the story will be
about.
Home
Reading
Encourage your child to look for the meaning of unknown words in the text they are reading. Clues are often in the sentence where the word appears or the sentence before or after. Students could also understand the meaning of the unknown word by thinking about the facts and details in the para-graph where the new word is found.
