GATHERING

PRELUDE – Introduction of the new SANCTUS and AGNUS DEI

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS (5:30 & 8:00)

In the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from

our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may

confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ,

our Savior and Lord.

Amen.

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Most merciful God,

we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have

sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by

what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we

have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus

Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may

delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name.

Amen

In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake

God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of

Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all

your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen

PEACE (5:30 & 8:00)

The Peace of the Lord be with you always.

And also with you

WORD

A Reading from Exodus 19The angel of God who was going before the Israelite army moved and went

behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from in front of them and took its place

behind them. 20It came between the army of Egypt and the army of Israel. And so

the cloud was there with the darkness, and it lit up the night; one did not come near

the other all night.

21Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. The LORD drove the sea back

by a strong east wind all night, and turned the sea into dry land; and the waters were

divided. 22The Israelites went into the sea on dry ground, the waters forming a wall

for them on their right and on their left. 23The Egyptians pursued, and went into the

sea after them, all of Pharaoh’s horses, chariots, and chariot drivers. 24At the

morning watch the LORD in the pillar of fire and cloud looked down upon the

Egyptian army, and threw the Egyptian army into panic. 25He clogged their chariot

wheels so that they turned with difficulty. The Egyptians said, “Let us flee from the

Israelites, for the LORD is fighting for them against Egypt.”

26Then the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, so that the

water may come back upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots and chariot drivers.” 27So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at dawn the sea returned to its

normal depth. As the Egyptians fled before it, the LORD tossed the Egyptians into

the sea. 28The waters returned and covered the chariots and the chariot drivers, the

entire army of Pharaoh that had followed them into the sea; not one of them

remained. 29But the Israelites walked on dry ground through the sea, the waters

forming a wall for them on their right and on their left.

30Thus the LORD saved Israel that day from the Egyptians; and Israel saw the

Egyptians dead on the seashore. 31Israel saw the great work that the LORD did

against the Egyptians. So the people feared the LORD and believed in the LORD and

in his servant Moses.

(Exodus 14: 19-31)

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 114

1When Israel went out from Egypt,

the house of Jacob from a people of strange language,

2Judah became God's sanctuary,

Israel his dominion.

3The sea looked and fled;

Jordan turned back.

4The mountains skipped like rams,

the hills like lambs.

5Why is it, O sea, that you flee?

O Jordan, that you turn back?

6O mountains, that you skip like rams?

O hills, like lambs?

7Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the LORD,

at the presence of the God of Jacob,

8who turns the rock into a pool of water,

the flint into a spring of water.

A Reading from Romans 1Welcome those who are weak in faith, but not for the purpose of quarreling over

opinions. 2Some believe in eating anything, while the weak eat only vegetables. 3Those who eat must not despise those who abstain, and those who abstain must not

pass judgment on those who eat; for God has welcomed them. 4Who are you to pass

judgment on servants of another? It is before their own lord that they stand or fall.

And they will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make them stand.

5Some judge one day to be better than another, while others judge all days to be

alike. Let all be fully convinced in their own minds. 6Those who observe the day,

observe it in honor of the Lord. Also those who eat, eat in honor of the Lord, since

they give thanks to God; while those who abstain, abstain in honor of the Lord and

give thanks to God.

7We do not live to ourselves, and we do not die to ourselves. 8If we live, we live

to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether

Page 8: The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost September 17, 2017 · 2017. 9. 9. · 1 The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost September 17, 2017 St. Paul’s Lutheran Church 215 N. Warren St

8

we die, we are the Lord’s. 9For to this end Christ died and lived again, so that he

might be Lord of both the dead and the living.

10Why do you pass judgment on your brother or sister? Or you, why do you

despise your brother or sister? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of

God. 11For it is written,

“As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me,

and every tongue shall give praise to God.” 12So then, each of us will be accountable to God.

(Romans 14: 1-12)

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Gospel Matthew 18: 21-35

The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew Glory to you, O Lord.

21Peter came and said to Jesus, “Lord, if another member of the church sins against

me, how often should I forgive? As many as seven times?” 22Jesus said to him, “Not

seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven times.

23“For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who

wished to settle accounts with his slaves. 24When he began the reckoning, one who

owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him; 25and, as he could not pay, his

Page 9: The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost September 17, 2017 · 2017. 9. 9. · 1 The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost September 17, 2017 St. Paul’s Lutheran Church 215 N. Warren St

9

lord ordered him to be sold, together with his wife and children and all his

possessions, and payment to be made. 26So the slave fell on his knees before him,

saying, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ 27And out of pity

for him, the lord of that slave released him and forgave him the debt. 28But that

same slave, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow slaves who owed him a

hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat, he said, ‘Pay what you owe.’ 29Then

his fellow slave fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will

pay you.’ 30But he refused; then he went and threw him into prison until he would

pay the debt. 31When his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were greatly

distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. 32Then

his lord summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked slave! I forgave you all that

debt because you pleaded with me. 33Should you not have had mercy on your fellow

slave, as I had mercy on you?’ 34And in anger his lord handed him over to be

tortured until he would pay his entire debt. 35So my heavenly Father will also do to

every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ.

THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY BAPSTISM (10:30)

PRESENTATION Candidates for baptism, sponsors, and parents gather with the ministers at the font.

In baptism our gracious heavenly Father frees us from sin and death by joining us to

the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are born children of a fallen

humanity; by water and the Holy Spirit we are reborn children of God and made

members of the church, the body of Christ. Living with Christ and in the

communion of saints, we grow in faith, love, and obedience to the will of God.

The presiding minister addresses parents or others who bring for baptism children who are not able to answer

for themselves:

Called by the Holy Spirit, trusting in the grace and love of God, do you desire to

have Gabrielle Kay Eger baptized into Christ?

Response: I do.

As you bring Gabrielle Kay to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with

responsibilities:

to live with her among God's faithful people,

bring her to the word of God and the holy supper,

teach her the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments,

place in her hands the holy scriptures,

and nurture her in faith and prayer,

so that she may learn to trust God,

proclaim Christ through word and deed,

care for others and the world God made,

and work for justice and peace.

Do you promise to help her grow in the Christian faith and life?

Response: I do.

The presiding minister addresses sponsors:

Sponsors, do you promise to nurture Gabrielle Kay in the Christian faith as you are

empowered by God's Spirit, and to help her live in the covenant of baptism and in

communion with the church?

Response: I do.

Page 11: The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost September 17, 2017 · 2017. 9. 9. · 1 The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost September 17, 2017 St. Paul’s Lutheran Church 215 N. Warren St

11

The presiding minister addresses the assembly:

People of God, do you promise to support Gabrielle Kay and pray for her in her

new life in Christ?

We do.

PROFESSION OF FAITH The presiding minister addresses candidates for baptism as well as the parents and sponsors of young children.

The assembly may join in the responses.

I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the

church.

Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God?

Response: I renounce them.

Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God?

Response: I renounce them.

Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God?

Response: I renounce them.

The presiding minister addresses the candidates and the assembly.

Do you believe in God the Father?

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.*

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

Page 12: The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost September 17, 2017 · 2017. 9. 9. · 1 The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost September 17, 2017 St. Paul’s Lutheran Church 215 N. Warren St

12

Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting.

RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS

You have made public profession of your faith. Do you intend to continue in the

covenant God made with you in holy baptism:

to live among God’s faithful people,

to hear the word of God and share in the Lord’s supper,

to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed,

to serve all people, following the example of Jesus,

and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth?

Each person responds:

I do, and I ask God to help and guide me.

The minister addresses the assembly.

People of God, do you promise to support and pray for these new members in their

life in Christ?

We do, and we ask God to help and guide us.

THANKSGIVING AT THE FONT Water may be poured into the font before or during the thanksgiving. At the font, the presiding minister begins

the thanksgiving:

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Page 13: The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost September 17, 2017 · 2017. 9. 9. · 1 The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost September 17, 2017 St. Paul’s Lutheran Church 215 N. Warren St

13

We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters

and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took

delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family, and

through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river

your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By the baptism of

Jesus' death and resurrection you set us free from the power of sin and death and

raise us up to live in you. Pour out your Holy Spirit, the power of your living Word,

that those who are washed in the waters of baptism may be given new life. To you

be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy

Spirit, now and forever.

Amen.

BAPTISM

Gabrielle Kay Eger I baptize you in the name of the Father,*and of the Son, and of

the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

You belong to Christ, in whom you have been baptized. Alleluia.

Let us pray.

We give you thanks, O God that through water and the Holy Spirit you give your

daughters and sons new birth, cleanse them from sin, and raise them to eternal life.

Laying both hands on the head of each of the newly baptized, the minister prays for each:

Sustain Gabrielle Kay with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and

understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear

of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever.

Amen.

The presiding minister marks the sign of the cross on the forehead of each of the baptized. Oil prepared for this

purpose may be used. As the sign of the cross is made, the minister says:

Gabrielle Kay, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked

with the cross of Christ forever. Amen.

14

WELCOME A lighted candle may be given to each of the newly baptized (to a sponsor of a young child) as a representative

of the congregation says:

Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works

and glorify your Father in heaven.

Let us welcome the newly baptized.

We welcome you into the body of Christ and into the mission we share: join us

in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God's creative and redeeming

word to all the world.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

In the night in which he was betrayed,

our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;

broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,

and gave it for all to drink, saying:

This cup is the new covenant in my blood,

shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power,

and the glory, forever and forever. Amen.

Gabrielle Kay Eger

A couple began worshiping at our 8:00 AM service. They continued to attend and

met with a few other people on an evening when we discussed St. Paul’s. Eric and

Sarah Eger have decided that they will join St. Paul’s and that they will baptize

their daughter, Gabrielle Kay Eger, who came into the world on May 16, 2017.

Gabrielle’s spiritual life will be supported by Emily Woodring and Garrett Eger, her

sponsors. May God bless one and all!

You have been sealed by the Holy Spirit

and marked with the cross of Christ forever.

LUTHERAN DISASTER RESPONSE

HURRICANE HARVEY ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hurricane Harvey hit the Gulf Coast of the United States on Aug. 25, 2017, threatening

millions of people in coastal Texas and Louisiana with multiple days of heavy rain, winds

and rising tides. While many have evacuated, significant damage is still expected, and

thousands of people may be housed in shelters for an extended period of time.

Lutheran Disaster Response’s affiliate is actively present, collaborating with community

leaders and officials to initiate the proper responses, particularly the long-term recovery

efforts. Together, we have a strong history of working with Disasters in the Gulf Coast

area. The road to recovery will be long, and Lutheran Disaster Response will be there to

accompany those affected through every phase of this disaster.

We invite you to stand by our neighbors on the Gulf Coast during this time. Your gifts

ensure that our church will be able to provide help and hope for those left homeless or

otherwise affected by this disaster for years to come.

Gifts to Lutheran Disaster Response designated for “Hurricane Response – United

States” will be used entirely (100 percent) for this disaster until the response is complete.

Together, we can help provide immediate and long-lasting support. Give today to support

the needs in this response and others like it.
