Fifteenth Sunday After Pentecost (Readings taken from the web page of United States Conference of Catholic Bishops: www.usccb.org) EPISTLE (II Corinthians 4:6-10)

For God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to bring to light the knowledge of the glory of God on the face of [Jesus] Christ. But we hold this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing power may be of God and not from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not constrained; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our body.

GOSPEL (Luke 5:1-11)

While the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and listening to the word of God, he was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret. He saw two boats there alongside the lake; the fishermen had disem-barked and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, he asked him to put out a short distance from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. After he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.” Simon said in reply, “Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets.” When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so that they were in danger of sinking. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” For astonishment at the catch of fish they had made seized him and all those with him, and likewise James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners of Si-mon. Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him.

Donations Sought for the St. Stephen Food Pantry:.Jesus asks us to “clothe the naked, harbor the homeless; to feed the hungry” etc., for as much as we have done this for another in need we have done it for him. We are in need of non-perishable shelf-stable foodstuffs to replenish our food pantry. Please remember those less fortunate when you are out doing your grocery shopping this week - you may leave your donations for our food pantry in the basket beneath the St. Nicholas icon.

“Along with working the Works of Mercy, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked and visit-ing the prisoner, we must also indoctrinate – we must open our mouths and give reason for the faith that is within us. Otherwise, we are merely philanthropists doling out palliatives.” -Dorothy Day
