9th Annual Celebration of the Faculty
The 9th
Annual “Celebration of the Faculty” was held in the IHP Atrium on
Thursday March 16, 2016 and was attended by almost 300 people. Everyone who
came enjoyed some great music, great food, and a great opportunity to honor our
new, promoted, tenured, and emeritus faculty members. Also honored that
evening were the seven recipients of the 2016 Gold Standard Award. This event
is organized and hosted by the Office of Faculty Affairs and Faculty
Development.

Dr. Arnold Moses was also recognized as Emeritus Faculty. Dr. Moses has been part of the Upstate family since he went to medical school here, graduating in 1954, and serving on the faculty for 55 years! He is internationally known for his
research and clinical leadership in metabolic bone disease and has received many prestigious awards for his work.
Superb Entertainment A Special End to the Evening A special thanks to Mr. Brian Moore from the Office. The program ended with a beautiful classical piece by the of Research Administration, who played several old favorites string quartet CHORDAE TENDONAE featuring

Honors & Awards ~ Congratulations to: Deborah Young Bradshaw, MD, Neurology, was named a Fellow of the
American Academy of Neurology in Feb., 2016.
Sharon Brangman, MD, Medicine, was honored with the 2016 Harriet Tubman
Spirit Award at the Midwinter Praise Festival, held at the Bethany Baptist
Church, on Feb. 28th.
Sharon Brangman, MD, Medicine, will receive the Wisdom Keeper Award
from the Focus/Greater Syracuse Group on April 6, 2016 in Syracuse, NY.
Richard Cantor, MD, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, received the New York
ACEP 2016 Physician of the Year Award. The award will be presented at New
York ACEP’s Annual Meeting on Thursday, July 7, 2016, Bolton Landing, NY.
John Epling, MD, MSEd, Chair, Family Medicine, has been named to the U.S.
Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). With his appointment, Dr. Epling
becomes one of 16 members on the task force. Members are appointed to serve
four-year terms by the Director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and
Quality, a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The task
force was created in 1984 as an independent panel of national experts in
prevention and evidence-based medicine. The task force works to improve the
health of all Americans by making evidence-based recommendations about
clinical preventive services such as screenings, counseling services, and
preventive medications.
Rebecca Garden, PhD, Bioethics and Humanities, has been named chair of the
Medical Humanities and Health Studies Forum for the Modern Language
Association. When the appointment ends in January 2017, Dr. Garden will
continue to serve on the Forum Executive Committee

Bernard J Poiesz, MD, Medicine. The paper: Poiesz B, Ruscetti F, Gazdar A,
Bunn P, Minna J, Gallo R: Detection and isolation of type-C retrovirus particles
from fresh and cultured lymphocytes of a patient with cutaneous T-cell
lymphoma. Proc Nat Acad Sci 1980;77: 7145-7419, was chosen as one of the “30
Classic Articles over the past 100 years” and represented the Medical Sciences
Category upon the 100th
anniversary of the Proceedings of the National Academy
of Sciences in the Dec. 22, 2015 journal. PNAS Classics are landmark papers
from the archives of PNAS; significant scientific reports that have withstood the
test of time. The authors of PNAS Classics opened new avenues of research
within their respective fields. These groundbreaking discoveries offer insights
into how the best science is practiced.

International Leadership
Christopher Morley, PhD, Interim chair, Public Health & Preventive Medicine
and Family Medicine, was appointed as the U.S. co-chair of the Research
Methods Working Group within the North American Primary Care Research
Group (NAPCRG), as of November, 2015. The Research Methods Working
Group is a part of NAPCRG's Committee for Advancing the Science of Family
Medicine.
National Leadership
Leah Kaufman, MD, OB/GYN, was elected the Vice Chair of the American
Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG), Council on Resident Education
in OB/GYN (CREOG) National Education Committee.
Andras Perl, MD, Medicine, was appointed to serve as a member of the Editorial
Boards of the following medical journals in this past year: Arthritis and
Rheumatism, Arthritis Research and Therapy, Reactive Oxygen Species, World
Journal of Translational Medicine, and World Journal of Immunology.
M. Saeed Sheikh, MD, PhD, Pharmacology, served on the Basic Mechanisms of
Cancer Therapeutics-C (ZRG BMCT-C) study section, NIH, Oct 5-6, 2015 and
again Feb 29-March 1, 2016.

Richard D Veenstra, PhD, Pharmacology, served on the Intercellular

State and Local Leadership
Robert E. Newmyer, MD, Pediatrics, has accepted a voluntary position as a
medical control physician with Mercy Flight Central, a nonprofit air transport
entity for Central New York.
University Leadership
Jeffrey Bogart, MD, chair, Radiation Oncology, has been named interim director
of the Upstate Cancer Center with overall responsibility for the strategic direction
of the center, including its financial performance and supervision and
organization and management of the day-to-day operations of the center. He is
also responsible for the performance of Upstate's ambulatory cancer services, as
well as the Cancer Center's role as it relates to enhancing cancer research and
expanding clinical trials for Upstate patients.
Simone Seward, MPH, Public Health & Preventive Medicine, has been named
Director of the Center for Civic Engagement.

Department News Medicine:
Sriram S. Narsipur, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine and
Pediatrics, Chief of the Division of Nephrology, and Medical Director of
Transplant Services, has been appointed Interim Chair of the Department of
Medicine. Dr. Narsipur has been recognized as a Best Doctor in America in
Nephrology since 2008, and was the recipient of an Upstate Gold Standard
Award in 2012. He received the Medical Alumni Association Clinical Faculty
Teaching Award in 2008, as well as several teaching awards from the
departments of Medicine and Pediatrics. He has been selected by graduating
classes to serve as Faculty Marshall twice and as the Commencement Awards
Ceremony speaker. He is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha. His research
interests focus on cardiovascular disease in chronic kidney disease. He received
his MD from the University of Michigan and completed Medicine-Pediatrics
training at Tufts-Baystate, followed by a fellowship in Nephrology at the

Li-Ru Zhao, PhD, Neurosurgery, was granted tenure as Associate Professor

Janice Bach, MD, Assistant Professor, Pediatrics
Dr. Bach received her medical degree from Wright State University and
completed her residency at SUNY Upstate Medical University. She has served in
the US Army, been in private practice, and has been on the voluntary faculty of
University of Rochester and Upstate.
Jean DiFlorio, DDS, Assistant Professor, Surgery – Dental Division
Dr. DiFlorio received her degree of dental surgery from SUNY Buffalo and
completed her residency at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. She has
been a member of our voluntary faculty and joins us from private practice.
Gregory Hurst, PhD, Assistant Professor, Radiology
Dr. Hurst received his doctoral degree from the University of Rochester. He has
been on the faculty of Case Western Reserve University. He has been in private
industry.

David Joseph, MD, Assistant Professor, Anesthesiology
Dr. Joseph received his medical degree from University College Cork in Ireland
and completed his residency at the University of Rochester. He pursued
additional training in Critical Care Medicine at Duke University Medical Center.
He has been on the faculty of Texas A & M Health Science Center and The
University of Texas at Houston Health Science Center and has also been in
private practice.

In Memoriam
William H. Bergstrom, MD, a medical professor,
pediatrician and researcher who outside the lecture hall and laboratory would run
clinics to treat migrant workers' children, has died. Bergstrom, 95, died January
16, 2016. His medical career included research posts in Boston, teaching
pediatrics for decades at the State University of New York Upstate Medical
University at Syracuse, NY, and traveling with medical teams to Algiers, Brazil
and China. Bergstrom and his wife of nearly 72 years, Charlotte Stuart
Bergstrom, lived for 60 years in Manlius, N.Y., where they raised four children,
from 1952 until moving to Danvers MA in 2012. Born Jan. 1, 1921, in Bay City,
Mich., he attended the Albany Academy in Albany, N.Y. and Binghamton (N.Y.)
Central High School, earned a B.A. degree at Amherst College in the "Hurricane
Class" of 1942 and an M.D. degree at the College of Medicine and Dentistry of
the University of Rochester in 1945. During college summers Bergstrom took
classes at the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, Mass. A Phi Beta
Kappa member, John and Mary R. Markle Scholar, member of the American
Society of Pediatric Nephrology and American Society for Bone and Mineral
Research, among others, he held research positions in Boston including National
Research Council Fellow at Children's Medical Center in 1951 before moving to
Syracuse in 1952. Bergstrom worked with his colleagues and students on more
than 40 research papers and presentations during a lengthy research career, and
authored a chapter in Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics. In the early 1960s he
initiated and ran summer evening clinics, with a full complement of medical staff,
to care for children in migrant farm worker camps in upstate New York.
Bergstrom is survived by his wife, Charlotte Stuart Bergstrom, four children,
William S. Bergstrom, of Rutledge, Pa., John S. Bergstrom, of Boston, Mary
Linn Bergstrom, of San Diego, Calif., and David B. Bergstrom, of Deposit, N.Y.
He had five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.(obituary from
