WHAT IS AN INTERNET EXCHANGE POINT?•A physical location that allows many Internet-based networksto exchange traffic with each other at a common meetingpoint, thus eliminating the need to build separate bilaterallinks with each local network.1

HOW MOBILE IS BENEFITED FROM IXP?2
1. Reduces cost incurred by the operator- Adoption of cost-neutral arrangements for
exchanging network traffic would result to reduction of bandwidth delivery cost for a network. It means that:
NETWORK OPERATION COST REDUCTION
=CHEAPER SERVICES

2. Keeps the local mobile data ‘local’- The facilitation of links between networks allows the operators to exchange mobile data traffic directly instead of routing the traffic on costly International IP transit links. IXP also allows traffic be delivered with the lowest possible latency. It means that:
LOW LATENCY=
HIGH QUALITY OF SERVICE

3. Introduces more stability and robustness for the network- Increasing number of direct links between networks
increases stability and robustness. It means that:
MORE LINKS=
MORE RESILIENT AGAINST NETWORK OUTAGES

4. Spurs competition and Lowers Barriers to Entry- IXP ideally provides a neutral traffic exchange
point service at fair price. This attract more operators to establish and operate their network. Also, more content providers are attracted to offer their services and applications since IXP lowers latency and thus reduces the downtime of these services and applications.
CASE STUDIES
KENYA INTERNET EXCHANGE POINT (KIXP)3• In Kenya, the Kenya Internet Exchange Point (KIXP) had:
- localised more than 1Gbps of peak traffic, dramatically reducing latency (from 200–600ms to 2–10ms on average), allowing ISPs to save almost USD1.5 million per year on IP Transit Prices .
- increased mobile data revenue by an estimated USD6 million for operators, having generated at least 100Mbps additional traffic of per year
– helped the localisation of content in the country, including from Google
– Aided to raise government tax revenue
INTERNET EXCHANGE POINT OF NIGERIA (IXPN)3• In Nigeria, the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN)
had:- localised 300Mbps of peak traffic with corresponding
reductions in latency, and allows national operators to save over USD1 million per year on international connectivity.
- induced Google to place a cache in Nigeria- helped repatriate previously externalised financial
platforms for online banking services.
TO SUMMARIZE:
CHEAPER ACCESS TO NETWORK =
CHEAPER ACCESS TO WIDE RANGE OF VALUABLE MOBILE APPLICATIONS AND SERVICES
=MORE USE CASES
=SPURS ECONOMIC GROWTH
