Director’s Note Welcome to Wagner College Theatre’s production of The Drowsy Chaperone!

The show was born in 1997 when Don McKeller, Lisa Lambert, and Greg

Morrison wrote a love letter to Golden Age musicals as a gift for real-life couple

Bob Martin and Janet Van De Graaff’s wedding rehearsal dinner. When the The

Drowsy Chaperone reshaped for the Toronto Fringe Festival, Bob Martin joined the

team and created the character of the Man in Chair to add the depth of a narrator

character and to give the show its renowned, juxtaposed style.

Part Mystery Science Theatre 3000, part Golden Age musical, part modern comedy,

and part fan fiction, The Drowsy Chaperone opened on Broadway in May of 2006.

It brought home six Tony Awards, including ‘Best Book,’ ‘Best Score,’ and ‘Best

Featured Actress in a Musical’ (for Beth Leavel, as the title character).

The Drowsy Chaperone has had major productions in Toronto, Los Angeles, New

York, London, and Japan, as well as two North American tours. Bob Martin

opened as the Man in Chair for almost every production. Notable actors such as

Bob Saget, John Glover, Clay Aiken and Geoffrey Rush have also played the Man

in Chair in major productions. The upcoming movie of The Drowsy Chaperone is

set to start filming in 2014, starring Geoffrey Rush as the Man in Chair.

The Drowsy Chaperone is a fresh spin on the idea of staying true to oneself. We can

each see a glimpse of ourselves within the show. It is a charming story of “what

makes you you?” and the rewards of finding out the answer to that question.
