and had arrived a day early. Dr. Graham
came incognito and sat on the grass at the
rear of the crowd. Because he was wearing
a hat and dark glasses, no one recognized
him.
Directly in front of him sat an elderly
gentleman who seemed to be listening
intently to Leighton’s presentation. When
Leighton invited people to come forward
as an open sign of commitment, Billy
decided to do a little personal evangelism.
He tapped the man on the shoulder and
asked, "Would you like to accept Christ?
I'll be glad to walk down with you if you
want to." The old man looked him up and
down, thought it over for a moment, and
then said, "Naw, I think I'll just wait till the
big gun comes tomorrow night." Billy and
Leigthon had several good chuckles over
that incident. Unfortunately, it underlines
how, in the minds of many people,
evangelism is the task of the "Big Guns,"
not the "little shots." (Lieghton Ford, Good
News is for Sharing, 1977, David C. Cook
Publishing Co., p. 67.)
Have you felt God asking you to share
your faith with others, but you did not feel
equipped to do so? Are there people in
JUST WALK ACROSS
THE ROOM – Leighton
Ford tells the story of a
time when he was
speaking at an open-air
crusade in Halifax, Nova
Scotia. Billy Graham was
to speak the next night
your life that you have been praying
could personally experience the love of
Jesus? Please join me for a four-
session class on learning how to
introduce others to Jesus by taking
simple walks across the room.
Just Walk Across the Room teaches
that the highest value in personal
evangelism is being attuned to and
cooperative with the promptings of the
Holy Spirit. This means playing only
the role you are intended to play –
walking when the Spirit says to walk,
talking when the Spirit says to talk,
and falling silent when the Spirit
suggests that you’ve already said
enough.
Just Walk Across the Room will be
offered at two different times or
“tracks” – one track in the morning
and one track in the evening – you
choose which time works best for you.
The schedule is as follows:
Session one: Wednesday, October 4
@ 10:30 a.m. OR 7:00 p.m.
Session two: Wednesday, October
11 @ 10:30 a.m. OR 7:00 p.m.
Session three: Wednesday, October
25 @ 10:30 a.m. OR 7:00 p.m.
Session four: Wednesday,
November 1 @ 10:30 a.m. OR 7:00
p.m.
You may register for Just Walk Across
the Room in one of three ways:
1. Email Pastor David at
2. Text Pastor David at 740-964-4575
3. See the sign-up sheet on the

THANK YOU – Dear Riverside Family,
I have taken a position with a company that supplies a workforce for FEMA and will be a part of the disaster recovery efforts in Texas (possibly Florida later on). I will work 2-3 months in Texas and then be home for 5-7 days. Bruce will remain in our home. Hopefully, I can be here on the Sundays I am home!
It has been a pleasure and an honor working at Riverside UMC. This is a wonderful church full of people who want to serve God. They have been great examples of faith for me. I love the gifts Pastor David Cady brings to Riverside and regret leaving during this exciting time. He is truly a blessing.
In Christ’s love and hope,
Linda Davis

FREEDOM BAG MINISTRY RESUMES SAT., OCT. 14 – 10am-2pm Come to the Narthex and help make Freedom Bags for women leaving prison at ORW in Marysville and DCI in Dayton. Bring your lunch and share the fellowship. Come for however much time you have available.
Donations of jeans-weight, woven (not knitted) fabrics are welcome. The ideal size is 48" X 36" (because those pieces are ready to sew). Or donate money or Jo-Ann Fabric gift cards. Drop fabrics in the bins near the parking lot doors.
You do not have to be able to sew to participate with the group. There are tasks for everyone. If you do sew, bring your machine and a pair of scissors. We have plenty of extension cords.
Feedback from both women's prisons has been heartwarming. We know that our Lord is in this work. If you cannot come, please pray for all the women who receive an encouraging word of faith through this physical object that conveys dignity and the love of Christ.
We sew on the 2nd Sat. of each month. Please put all the dates for this year on your calendar now: Nov. 11, skip Dec., and for 2018: Jan. 13, Feb. 10, Mar. 10, Apr. 14, May 12, June 7.

REFLECTIONS FROM RWANDA FROM PASTOR HERMAN Praise be to God for a safe and successful mission trip to Rwanda. On Friday, September 15th, we installed the pump and asked God to bless a new well for a village of approx. 200 people who now have ready access to clean drinking water.
Twenty six hours (one way) is a long way to get to central Africa, but I can tell you it was worth the investment. This was Susan and my first Living Water mission trip. The people of Rwanda were incredibly hospitable to us. It was as if we were visiting family. In fact, we were, as these are our brothers and sisters in Christ. Though we were not able to directly communicate do to the language barrier we found a smile, a handshake and a hug go a long way. We were well shepherded by our hosts who spoke excellent English and welcomed us as family. In many ways I felt as if I were at Riverside with my church family.
I was struck by the sense of community in a country that experienced unspeakable hatred and division 23 years ago. They have truly learned from and reconciled with the past. If you ask them how they did this, they will give God all the glory in Jesus Christ. Rwanda has 11 million people which is about the same as Ohio but is only one quarter the size of our state. They estimate that 2 million people remain without ready access to clean drinking water. Their government appreciates and partners well with Living Water. Their government is making great strides in education and job opportunities for a country in which 90% of its people barely subsist off of the land. Yet I continue to be struck by a people who have so little in the way of comforts and yet seem to have so much peace.
When some of us helped repair a well in another village, the head of the village said to us: “we have nothing to give you for coming so far to help us but to pray God’s blessing upon you.” God answered his prayer as we encountered the living God in these people. Thank you for your prayers and your support of this ministry.

We also have listening CD’s that will emphasize and help you learn YOUR singing part: alto, soprano, tenor, or bass! Our Chancel Choir rehearses Thursday evenings at 7:30pm, and sings every Sunday at the 9am service throughout the fall, winter, and spring seasons. BELL CHOIR -- We meet on Thursdays, at 6:30pm in the sanctuary. We are exploring new arrangements this fall, many that feature our new chimes (courtesy of the Endowment Committtee). We are looking for new ringers. Come and ring, pluck, wing and shake things up with our beloved band of “ringalings!”
CHILDREN’S CHOIR – “The Christmas
Lamb” is a magical, musical tour of the
seven continents of the world. A
Shepherd Boy searches for the Newborn
King in his magical flying boat! Along the
way, animal characters – Cucukoo, Court
Musician of the Blackforest; Great King
Buffalo; Clown, Prince, Toucan; Penguin,
Lord of the Ice and Snow; Kangaroo,
Leaping Lord of the Australian Outback;
Elephant, Great Beast of Burden; Lion,
King of the Savanna—provide clues by
quoting Advent prophecies from the
book of Isaiah.
This super musical sings like a classic
children’s story book and is simply sweet
and adorable. Featuring folk songs from
Africa, France, and Mexico, along with
melodies by Tchaikovsky, this music is so
easy for children to embrace. In addition
to our Christmas musical, we will work
on anthems for Sunday mornings to
share with the traditional and
contemporary services.
Have your little ones join Miss Vicki and
her friends on Sunday evenings at 5:30pm
(beginning Sept. 3); for a magical time of
musical games, instruments, music,
crafts, snacks, singing and dancing. We
are open to all children, 3 ½ yrs. old
(potty trained) – 12 yrs old. Let’s make
some music!
