Coordinators Attend Conference in Florida

Jan Hudzicki and Heide McBride attended the 23rd Association of Collegiate Conference and Event Directors (ACCED-I) Conference in Orlando, Florida. This conference is a gathering of people who plan conferences and events on their college campuses. Approximately 380 participants and 20 exhibitors were in attendance.

The conference featured a keynote presentation by Tom Peters, well-known business guru. Various break-out sessions covering contract law, marketing, trend analysis, and working with your campus service providers were held, as well as breakfast roundtables with informal discussion on specific topics. The closing keynote presentation on ‘Refrigerator Rights’ was by Will Miller; comedian, minister, and psychologist.

Jan and Heide each attended different sessions to maximize the information-gathering and networking opportunities at the workshop. Social events included a group dinner with other conference and event planners from our region (NE, KS, IA, and MO), an awards banquet, and an evening at the House of Blues at Disney’s Pleasure Island. They brought back great information and new ideas for our conferencing services.

Following the conference, Jan stayed an extra day and did a site visit for the 2005 Joint Meeting of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists in Tampa.

Super Effort Unites ISDN and IP ISDN and IP came together at last in the same

TELENET 2 multipoint video-conference program. A super human effort by Susan Barton, Kansas Regents Network, and Danny Fronce, Telecommunications, was required to make this seemingly simple connection happen. The IP video conference site at the Clay County Emergency Service Academy could not connect with the video-conference bridge. Susan and Danny leaped firewalls, achieved diversity, and saved the day.

Here are some useful nuggets I’ve found recently. These all come from SearchDay, a free e-newsletter published by Search Engine Watch.

Enjoy! Honing Your Web-Searching Skills How efficient are your information searches on the Web? Mine are often a

dismal waste of time. I know it should be easier to find information on the Web. Finally, I found some help. A series of “teach yourself” tutorials developed by a group of subject and information experts offers a first-rate learning experience for novices and experts alike. These are skills no

one taught us in school. Full article: http://www.searchenginewatch.com/searchday/article.php/2175181

Writing for Search Engines As far as I know, writing for the Web isn’t in any of our job descriptions, but it’s a topic a bunch of us are

faced with. In addition to making Web pages friendly, attractive, and usable for visitors, Web pages need to be search-engine friendly too. The two ways most people get to our Web pages is directly through a URL we advertise or through a search engine. To date, Melinda and Scott have done an excellent job of making DCE’s pages “findable.” To keep up with aggressive competition, we’ll all need to learn a little about writing for the Web. This article has enough resources for you to become the Search Engine Optimization expert you’ve secretly always wanted to be.

Free Business Research from Dun & Bradstreet It’s a rarity these days to find high quality business information on the Web that’s free of charge, but Dun

and Bradstreet’s Zapdata offers it in droves. Between this Website and Lexis/Nexis (from K-State Libraries), you can have a pretty good survey of a competitive environment in an afternoon.

Visualizing Google Ever wonder what the Web looks like to a search engine? Search engine results combine link popularity,

link “importance,” and contextual clues to come up with the sites it thinks are most relevant to you. Some of us are visual learners and like a graphical representation of concepts. This article offers links to three Web mapping sites. Enter your program’s page or a competitor’s.

Employee RecognitionEmployee RecognitionEmployee RecognitionEmployee RecognitionEmployee Recognition Pam Barrett Job Title: Accountant I Section: Business Office Room #: 122 College Court Job Responsibilities: Pam pays some of the invoices to University departments, manages the accounting system at DCE, and runs the month-end reports. Preparing the financial reports for the grants for DCE and recording classified and unclassified employee leave are important tasks for Pam. Years of Service: 15 yrs with DCE & 23 yrs at KSU Personal Information : Pam is married to Gerry, a boiler technician for The Cube Corporation at Ft. Riley. She has a stepdaughter, Vannessa, who is 16, and a stepson, Josh, who is 13. In addition, she also has a 4-year-old black lab golden retriever mix named Willie. In her spare time, Pam enjoys attending K-State football and women’s basketball games, cooking for her family, and reading. Pam has been working on her bachelor’s degree in accounting on a part-time basis since 1990. Pam is planning on receiving her degree in December of 2003.

“Pam is a truly excellent and dedicated member of the business office staff. She handles a multitude of tasks with ease and is extremely reliable. Her work ethics are to be commended. Along with providing good service in the business office, she has also been steadily taking classes at KSU and will soon complete her degree. She is a tremendous asset to the Division.” Ruth Beisel

Melinda Sinn Job Title: Public Information Coordinator Department: Program Development and Marketing Room #: 21 College Court Job Responsibilities: Coordinating promotions for all the Division of Continuing Education programs, and making sure we have customers. Years of Service: 22 Personal Information : My husband, Greg, and I have been married 23 years, and we have three teenage daughters. Janel is a freshman at Barton County Community College, majoring in graphic design and horticulture. Crystal is a sophomore at Riley County High School where she plays volleyball and three band instruments: the oboe, flute and piccolo. Brandi is a 7th grader, and she is trying everything that junior high has to offer: sports, drill team, band, etc. We live on a farm west of Manhattan, close to Keats. Besides keeping busy with the

girls’ activities, I help Greg occassionally on the farm, we garden, and I love to read, do stamping, and crafts. We have lots of pets at our house, and I always have free kittens to give away.

“As the coordinator for the public information office, Melinda watches over one of the most critical nerve centers in the Division of Continuing Education. She is the one who makes sure that our public statements are appropriately crafted and strategically sent out, that our marketing and brochures are attractively designed and delivered, and that our mailings and copies are prepared and delivered on time. She is also the one who makes certain that K-State is represented at 15-20 state and regional education and career fairs each year. Melinda has been very successful working with University Publications and other news agencies to get K-State stories into a variety of publications. Through her marketing and promotion strategies, information about K-State distance education programs reached a circulation of 3.9 million last year, all on a budget that is less than half of what most spend on such efforts. She has collected and organized information to nominate programs and individuals for various regional and national awards. As a result, we now have several “award winners” in the field of distance education. Another service that Melinda provides is to be a “nag.” When she is nagging, we know she is seeing the bigger picture and calling us to be more (promptly) productive. She is a dedicated co-worker who does a lot to help us all succeed.”

Trent Leaves DCE Cyndy Trent

has left the Division after nearly 20 years of service to DCE and K-State. She has accepted a position as Director of Distance Education at San Joaquin Valley in Visalia, California. Cyndy

has filled many roles during her tenure, but most recently has been the Program Coordinator for the College of Business Administration and for the Bachelor’s Degree Completion Program. Daniel Butcher, who has worked closely with Cyndy, will assume many of her roles on an interim basis.

Sweet Adelines Take 4th in Regionals While it’s not unusual for employees of DCE to receive awards or recognition, one of Trina McCarty’s

recent accomplishments has nothing to do with her work as a program assistant. Trina is a member of the Wamego Dutch Mill Sweet Adelines choir who recently received fourth place

overall in their regional competition. The choir competed against eleven other groups, from as far away as Des Moines, Iowa. On top of that, the Sweet Adelines earned second place in the small chorus competition. Success in this small chorus competition is nothing new to the members of the Sweet Adelines, who have placed first 13 times in the past 17 years.

“The group competes in the competition each spring and also performs a show at the Columbian Theatre in Wamego each fall,” Trina said.

Singing has always been an enjoyable hobby for Trina. Growing up, she would take part in any school or church choirs that became available. “I don’t ever remember not wanting to sing.”

Trina says that while singing is what brought the members of the Sweet Adelines to the group, it’s the friendships they’ve built that keeps them coming back week after week.

Trina values the experience of performing with the Dutch Mill Sweet Adelines. “It’s challenging, rewarding, and offers a great deal of stress-relief.”

While Trina has been a member of the Sweet Adelines since 1999, the group was chartered in 1981 and still has their original director, Jeanette Hupe, leading them. Trina says the group currently has 40 members and has really grown in the last few years.

General information about the Sweet Adelines International can be found on their site at: www.sweetadelineintl.org.

Women interested in being a part of the Sweet Adelines should contact Trina McCarty.

Trina is on the far left in the second row.
