From The President

Dear De La Salle Family,This issue of the Collegiate celebrates our many blessings. How are we blessed? Well how about 90 years of Lasallian education in metropolitan Detroit? Or how about the 60 years of faith-filled, generous service that Br. Patrick McNally, FSC has given to our world as a Brother of the Christian Schools? Or how about the long list of generous benefactors who continue to support our school year in and year out? We are so deeply blessed!

Our Annual Report lists those good and generous people who continue to support our Lasallian mission. Without your support we would not be able to offer a truly transformative educational experience for our students. “Builders of Boys and Makers of Men” is far more than a slogan – it is a core value of our school. As you take the time to review the lists of our benefactors over the past year, please offer a prayer of gratitude for them and their loved ones.

As we begin our 90th year of Lasallian education in metropolitan Detroit I would like to re-introduce you to the importance of our Lasallian Fund, which is our annual fund. Each year we seek to raise funds to support programs, such as our tuition assistance program, that are not fully funded by tuition. Our focus in the year to come will be on strengthening our strategic initiatives to grow our Lasallian Fund. This year we will be awarding close to $1.6 million in tuition assistance. As significant a number as that is, we still can and must do more for our families in need. Please be as generous as you can be in supporting this year’s Lasallian Fund.

This past July, Br. Patrick McNally, FSC celebrated 60 years as a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. Thank you, Br. Patrick, for all you do for our school and for all you mean to each one of us. Br. Patrick’s generous and faith-filled service to our school commu-nity is a gift that truly goes beyond measure.

God’s blessings come to us in so many ways. I know that you will enjoy reading about the many blessing we receive each day. Thank you for the blessing you are to us!

St. John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us! Live, Jesus, in our hearts, forever!

John M. Knight President

Lasallian News

Brother Patrick McNally, St. Joseph’s Class of 1955, recently marked his 60th Anniversary as a Christian Brother. He celebrated with family and friends with a Mass at De La Salle Collegiate followed by a dinner, on July 30.

Currently the St. Joe’s Alumni Director at De La Salle, Brother Pat also directs the school’s Drama program, also known as “The Wig and Mask Society” or WAMS.

Br Pat entered the Novitiate in June 1955, and pronounced his first vows in September 1956. He earned his Bachelor’s degree at Catholic University of America in 1960, and then headed to La Salle Academy in New York City as a teacher and choral director. He then spent two years at St. Peter’s High School (Staten Island) as a teacher and track coach.

In 1964, St. Joseph’s High School in Detroit closed, and a large group of St. Joe’s “Bluejays” were trans-ferring to De La Salle Collegiate. Because Br. Pat was a graduate of St. Joe’s, the Provincial of the New York District assigned Br. Pat to De La Salle Collegiate to help ease in the transition.

Br. Pat remained at De La Salle until 1972, teaching, serving as choral director, and coaching track.

From 1972 - 1980, he was Assistant Principal at Christian Brothers’ Academy (Lincroft, NJ),

and continued to coach track and serve as choral director.

He returned to De La Salle Collegiate in 1980, to the Detroit campus, and was part of the move to Warren in 1982. He served as Campus Minister, choral director, track coach, as a guidance coun-selor and as director of WAMS.

For the next ten years, he was away from De La Salle - first as Vocation Director for the New York Province from 1992 - 2000, and then for two years at the Christian Brothers Academy Military School (Albany, NY) as Campus Minister, choral director, and Christian Service coordinator.

In 2002, he returned to Warren, as assistant to the President, then

Br. Bob Carnaghi, and assistant to the DLS Alumni Director, John Monigold. Br. Pat also took on establishing an active St. Joe’s Alumni group, and is the St. Joe’s Alumni Director. He also became the Advisor to the Christian Brothers’ Auxiliary (CBA), the Vocations Coordinator, and the WAMS Director.

DLS President John M. Knight said, “Br. Pat is and has been a special person to the DLS commu-nity and the SJ alumni community over the years. Brother’s dedica-tion to our students and to our Lasallian mission is extraordinary. Thank you Brother for the blessing you are to us! May our dear Lord bless you with good health and happiness in all you do.”

Lasallian News

Brother Robert Deary, DLS ‘61, is now assigned to Bethlehem University, in Palestine, in the West Bank.

In a recent letter, Br. Robert said, “I visited Bethlehem in early October (2015) and felt that God was calling me to serve the Palestinian Christian and Muslim students that attend the University.”

His initial job will be organizing a tutoring center for students in need of additional help, especially in reading and writing English. He will also be doing some tutoring.

“It is a wonderful place that serves a very important purpose. In 2016 - 2017, there will be 11 Brothers in the Community from the United States and Australia. I am very excited to begin this new chapter of my life,” he also wrote.

For the past several years, Br. Robert has been at St. Raymond High School for Boys in the Bronx, NY, one of 17 high schools conducted by the Brothers of the Christian Schools (FSC) in the District of Eastern North America (DENA).

Because mail delivery is both expensive, and erratic, Br. Robert will be communicating with family and friends via email: [email protected] or via Skype at robertjdeary.

Brother Ken Kalinowski, DLS ‘84, pronounced his final vows on July 15 at a ceremony at Lasalle University in Philadelphia, PA. Br. Ken signed a document, witnessed by Br. Dennis Malloy, FSC, Brother Visitor of the Brothers of the Christian Schools for the District of Eastern North America (DENA), and other Brothers with ties to Michigan and De La Salle, committing himself to life as a Christian Brother.

The ceremony at Lasalle University concluded a week-long quadrennial retreat for brothers in the DENA area.

Br. Ken grew up in Detroit and attended St. Augustine’s in Detroit - where there were Brothers. He said, “I am extreme-ly grateful for the Brothers’ example while growing up at my parish, and then I met the Christian Brothers at De La Salle Collegiate who tirelessly gave of themselves to their students each day. The Brothers continue to give witness to serv-ing God and our world. Live, Jesus, in our hearts! Forever! Always a Pilot!”

Br. Ken has served at various schools, including Lasalle Academy in New York City, CBA Syracuse and St. Joe’s Buffalo in upper New York, and St.Raymond’s in the Bronx.

In 2015, he began teaching in Papua, New Guinea, where the Brothers of the Christian Schools recently celebrated 70 years of teaching and serving the people of New Guinea.

IB Students ‘Hit the Road’De La Salle Collegiate’s twelve Class of 2017 International Baccalaureate (IB) students, along with four IB teachers, traveled to Montana in May 2016 for a week of service and science. A component of the IB program is Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS). Brad Cusumano, the IB CAS Coordinator for DLS, organized the trip into two components: a service piece with the De La Salle Blackfeet School in Browning, MT., followed by a science project at Glacier National Park. During the stay in Blackfeet Nation, the IB students lived in a small bunkhouse while serving at De La Salle Blackfeet Indian Reservation. They prepared their own meals, along with IB Coordinator Stephanie Howay, Biology teacher Jackie VanThomme, Chemistry teacher Rob Black, and Brad Cusumano. DLS students spent two and a half days at De La Salle Blackfeet, a Lasallian school (dlsb.org) estab-lished in 2001 by the Midwest

District of the Christian Brothers. Blackfeet is co-ed, and has about 70 students in grades 4-8. It is one of 11 “San Miguel” schools, which serve predominantly at-risk populations. These schools are not tuition-driven, depending on service and philanthropy, have extended school days, and have small class sizes. Blackfeet serves a remote region on an Indian reservation bordered by Canada to the north, and Glacier National Park to the west. Brad said, “This was an unbeliev-able and emotional experience for our young men. Our students tutored, and assisted the teachers in facilitating homework assign-ments and quizzes. Most important-ly, they were able to build lasting relationships with these students.”The DLS group then headed to Glacier National Park to complete the IB science project. The boys surveyed loons and connected data,

simultaneously assisting the National Park service in their tracking of loons. The students also took part in the National Park Services “BioBlitz” during which they examined specific types of insects in Lake Bowman, assisting the Park service in its comparisons of nutrient-rich lakes vs. nutrient-poor lakes.Principal Steve Stewart said, “Our IB program continues to grow each year thanks in large part to the fantastic job our teachers, counselors, admissions, and coordinators do every day! We will continue to offer IB instructional professional develop-ment to all of our teachers because it improves student learning and critical thinking.”

IB students regularly engage in service. In June 2016, students spent the day at Clark Park, in southwest Detroit, helping to

facilitate a field day for Maybury Elementary School.

DLS Art Students are “Penguin People”Last April, as the Detroit Zoo prepared to open its new Polk Penguin Conservation Center, De La Salle Art students were

invited to draw pictures of penguins. The students, their drawings, and Art teacher Mr. John Hicks, were photographed, and became

one of several 6’ by 3’ posters on the construction wall. The picture was also featured in the Zoo’s promotional video for the new Center. A smaller version of the poster is still featured

near the Center’s entrance.

DLS Students Earn College Credits in Unique Dual Enrollment Program at UDM

Recent DLS graduate Andrew Marchetti already had college credits - before he walked on campus this fall at the University of Detroit Mercy (UDM). Andrew took the Introduction to Business course at UDM last fall, earning three credits. UDM pro-vides the books and covers tuition for students in the Dual Enrollment Programs offered in the Colleges of Business Administration, Engineering & Science, Health Professions, Liberal Arts and Education, and the School of Architecture. Generous UDM alumni provide funding for the Program. The Dual Enrollment offerings include Accounting 1 and 2 - courses which Mr. Dennis Koch, DLS Business teacher, says will cover in 8 weeks what is covered in two high school semesters. Students interested in applying to the Dual Enroll- ment Program work through the DLS Counselors to complete the forms with UDM. Juniors must have a minimum 3.5 GPA; seniors must have a minimum 3.25 GPA. Andrew was enrolled in Mr. Koch’s IB Business Management, Banking, and AP Economics classes, as well as working in the DLS “Union,” the Christian Financial Credit Union (CFCU) branch right in the building. He is now in his first year of the five-year MBA Program with a concentration in Finance.Recent graduate Mario Fusciardi, now attending Michigan State University, took the Accounting 1 course during the Spring 2016 semester.Current senior Dominic Sciturro, who is in the DLS Banking Program this year, also took the Intro to Business Course during the Spring 2016 semester. He said the Monday evening course had students from the college, including UDM Dental students for whom the course is required. “It was a good mix of high school and college kids,” said Dominic. “The class was 2 and a half hours, and more of a lecture and discussion-based class. We had a sizeable book, and covered a chapter a week. The homework consisted of reading the material and submitting an online assignment every week, but the course is definitely manageable for a high school student.”

Mr. Koch said, “UDM has an excellent tradition and is giving our students an excellent opportunity. I am excited for our students to actually take college busi-ness classes and further their liking for business.”Principal Steve Stewart says, “I believe ANY time we can get students college credit, along with satisfying a high school requirement, it’s a wonderful thing! It saves the student time and money while they learn at a higher level -- win-win-win!

Christian Financial Credit Union Awards ScholarshipsRecent graduates Kevin Jones and Andrew Marchetti, both students in the Christian Financial Credit Union (CFCU) Banking program, each received a CFCU $500 scholarship.

Business teacher Dennis Koch said, “Andrew and Kevin are two excellent young men. I was very impressed by the amount of dedi-cation they had towards their aca-demic studies, CFCU, and all the activities they participated in.”

Kevin is majoring in Finance at the University of Toledo; Andrew is in the five-year MBA Program with a concentration in Finance at the University of Detroit Mercy.

Aarran Meier, the CFCU Business Manager who works closely with the Banking students, said, “Andrew and Kevin are both incredible young men! Their

commitment to a job well done is evident in all they do! I have no doubt they will both excel in their business careers.”

Tech Upgrades Speed Net ConnectionA major technology upgrade at De La Salle, valued at $180,000, was completed this summer, result-ing in Wi-Fi speeds nearly 1,000 times faster than the old system.

President John M. Knight said, “We are excited and proud of our new changes and welcomed stu-dents back to faster, more reliable technology systems.”

Mr. Dennis Parks, Information Technology Director, said, “We created wireless access in every part of the building. We re-placed the current 15 wide-area ‘hotspots’ and added another 60 for a total of 75. We have brought Wi-Fi right to where the students

are. Wi-Fi is now available in every classroom, conference room, and office area, as well as the Digital Resource Center, the Commons, the Cafeteria, the Gym, and the weight room and locker rooms.”

Since DLS became a Google school several years ago, all students have a school gmail account (Google email), and use Google for note taking and document sharing. Mr. Parks says that on any given day, there may be 500 devices, including Chromebooks, PCs, and phones, on the wireless system at one time.

“As more and more students come

to school with Chromebooks, as well as their phones, we could eas-ily approach having 2,000 devices on the system at any time,” says Mr. Parks.

The upgrade also included the seven servers that serve as the “spine” of the network. The net-work switches, all over 12 years old, were replaced. The two coax lines have been replaced with a new 1Gb per second fiber optic connection.

On any given day, there may be 500 devices,

including Chromebooks, PCs, and phones, on the

DLS wireless system at one time.

The Brother’s Table De La Salle Collegiate has had a long tradition of making its Catholic education affordable through Tuition Assistance. As Brother George Synan was known to say, the school never wants to turn away any boy strictly because of a lack of funds.

For some Pilots, however, tuition is just the beginning of their needs.

“Some of our boys don’t have enough to eat,” says President Emeritus Brother Bob Carnaghi. “It’s important to know that these situations have always been present at De La Salle, and they continue today. The Brothers are personally committed to making sure these boys have something to eat during the school day.”

To address this need, the school has begun a program called “The Brothers’ Table” to help provide necessary food and extras for stu-dents identified through a detailed application process. The goal is to raise $50,000 annually to fund The Brothers’ Table, and the Brothers’ Community at De La Salle has contributed the first $5,000.

“This is an important part of our Lasallian Mission,” said Brother Bob, “and we wanted to make a contribution ourselves to help and to highlight this issue. I am calling upon our friends and alumni, especially our recent graduates, to join the Brothers in meeting our goal. If we raise more than the goal, we will put it towards the Tuition Assistance Fund.”

People wishing to contribute to The Brothers’ Table can do so online at ThePilotHangar.com, or through the Lasallian Fund by clearly desig-nating their gift to be directed to The Brothers’ Table. For more information, please contact Advancement at 586.778.3356.

Academic News

Congratulations to Mrs. Laura Rigby, a Science teacher at De La Salle since 2007, who is De La Salle’s 2015-2016 Archdiocesan Excellence in Teaching award winner.

Mrs. Rigby was selected as the DLS Nominee for the Award by the DLS Faculty. She teaches College Prep Biology, Honors Biology, and Honors Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2; she has also taught Advanced Placement Biology.

Principal Steve Stewart said, “Mrs. Rigby rocks science! She knows and cares about each individual student she touches. Always positive, always looking for better ways for her students - hallmarks of an education professional. DLS is very fortunate to have her as part of our family.”

“I love coming to work where everyone is united and committed to doing what is right for our boys,” said Mrs. Rigby. “I feel so flattered to receive this award and have been truly blessed to be able to teach at De La Salle. I am proud to be a part of a staff that cares deeply, takes personal responsibility for student suc-cess and well-being, and does what needs to be done without question.”

A 1988 Summa Cum Laude graduate of Wayne State University, Mrs. Rigby entered the Wayne State University School of Medicine, graduating with honors and distinction in 1993, and with a Doctor of Medicine degree. She had high scores on the Medical National Board Examination.

But despite her medical training, she found herself drawn to teaching. She said, “Growing up I was drawn to teaching and often found myself tutoring friends and family members. I just naturally loved helping people to learn and understand deeply.

Even through medical school, I found myself search-ing for cool ways to understand, remember, and tutor friends through the avalanche of information that was constantly careening our way.

Mrs. Laura Rigby Receives Teaching Award

I found medi-cal school to be ridiculously interesting, and the physiology of the body to be awe-inspiring, and I excelled academically. Unfortunately, at the same time, medi-cine did not feel like ‘my thing.’ Although I was re-ally unhappy, I didn’t want to let anyone down. I felt like I was stuck on the hamster wheel. Jumping off at high velocity is not easy to do. It took me a while to make the decision to leave. In retrospect, it is the best decision I have ever made.”

Mrs. Rigby then pursued a Master’s Program in teaching through Oakland University, and earned her secondary certification in 2007, concentrating on Biology and Chemistry.

“Today, I feel blessed to be able to share my knowledge and experiences with the boys through my Anatomy and Physiology courses, which I try to infuse with lots of clinical understanding and experiences. Let’s face it. These boys like to slice, dice, and stitch, and I am absolutely passionate about giving them a taste of the miraculously intricate, yet logical, beauty behind the human body. I am a teacher, and I feel like my path, though unconventional and circuitous, has brought me to where I am supposed to be.”

Mrs. Rigby and her husband Dennis are the parents of Joshua, a recent DLS graduate, and Justin, who will graduate with the Class of 2017. “When I first started my teaching career, my two sons were small and high school seemed worlds away. It has been a blessing having them attend high school here.

When you are doing what you were meant to do, you just feel it, and I certainly feel it,” said Mrs. Rigby. “I can think of no other place I would rather teach.”

2015-2016 De La Salle Collegiate

Annual ReportDe La Salle gratefully acknowledges all donations

made between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016

St. John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us.Live, Jesus, in our hearts. Forever!

MISSION STATEMENTDe La Salle Collegiate is dedicated to the

Catholic education of its diverse students, including the poor and disadvantaged.

We are a college preparatory school inspired by the spirit and tradition

of St. John Baptist de La Salle, where learning takes place in the presence of God.

Each student is encouraged to develop his faith, character, intellect, and morality.

This mission is embodied in the school’s motto:

“Builders of Boys, Makers of Men.”

16 Builders of Boys, Makers of Men A Lasallian Education since 1926

This year the Annual Honor Roll of Donors moves from the Winter edition of The Collegiate to this, the Fall edition. The Annual Financial Report will continue to be published in the Winter edition. The Honor Roll recognizes gifts made during the school’s most recent fiscal year, July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016.

Most importantly, the Honor Roll is published with sincere thanks to those who support the students of De La Salle Collegiate, and the acknowledgment that without this commitment, De La Salle would not be the school it is for young men. The future of Catholic education at ministries such as De La Salle depends on the recognition of its importance to our children and our society, and a willingness to “give back,” thus casting a vote for its value. The people included in this report do so, and it is offered with our prayers of gratitude.

Ways To Support De La Salle CollegiateLasallian Fund – Annual GivingAnnual Giving is the highest charitable priority for De La Salle. It provides critical and immediate support for students and is essential to bridge the gap between tuition revenue and the actual cost of educating a student. Unrestricted gifts are the greatest need. Donors may also choose to direct their gift. Tuition assistance is a particularly important area of support, as it represents the De La Salle tradition of keeping Catholic education affordable.

EndowmentEndowed Scholarship Funds are crucial to the future of De La Salle. Once established, the principle of the account is invested as part of the De La Salle endowment and the interest generated is utilized annually to benefit students. Endowed Scholarships are an especially meaningful way to honor a person as the fund becomes a permanent part of the school and a perpetual tribute to that person.

Planned GiftsThe Brother George Synan Society honors those that have included De La Salle in their estate plan. These arrange-ments insure the future of De La Salle and can often provide a tax advantage for families as they plan their estates.

Some philanthropic notes of opportunity for the coming year: Please contact your tax advisor or the Advancement Office for more details.

•Giving stocks or other securities. Donors are often able to receive the full deductible value of appreciated shares donated, while avoiding capital gains taxes.

•Contributions directly from your IRA. If you are 701/2 or older, you may be able to make a distribution directly from your IRA and enjoy significant tax benefits while supporting De La Salle.

•Gifts of Life Insurance Policies. If you have a policy that is no longer needed and don’t wish to carry on with the premiums, consider transferring it to De La Salle. Advancement can help with more information on the potential benefits.

•The Brothers’ Table. See page 13 for more details.

The De La Salle Advancement Department is available to consult with you or your advisors.

An exciting time in the Admissions Office!

Welcome - Class of 2020

The 2017 camps and dates will be announced in early January 2017. Be sure to mark you calendars so your children enroll in time and do not end up on a waiting list.

The school continues to thrive with enrollment growing for the 2016-17 school year. This is a tribute to our commitment to our Lasallian values and uncom-promising focus on putting the student first. We invite parents and students of any age to attend one of the Admissions events throughout the year. Some of these include:

Athletic News

The De La Salle Collegiate 2016 Varsity Baseball Team won the MHSAA Division 1 Baseball Championship on June 18, beating Saline High School 7-6 in the title game at Michigan State University.

Head Coach Matt Cook said, “This was one of the best high school baseball games you will ever see played. The game had a little bit of everything: great pitching, defense, and clutch hitting. Those were two excellent baseball teams that played for the state championship. Saline was a very good team. I just couldn’t be happier for our team, especially our seniors, with the way the game turned out.”

The win was Coach Matt Cook’s first championship as head coach, since taking over the job in 2011.

The 2016 championship is the fourth baseball title for DLS. The Pilots won in 1993, 2000, and 2009, and reached the title game in 2012 against Hudsonville. DLS beat Saline 3-2 in 2009.

The Pilots began the 2016 playoff run with a come from behind 4-2 win over Fraser for the District Championship, and a 5-0 Regional Championship win over Grosse Pointe North, a perennial rival in playoff action. The Pilots beat CHSL rival University of Detroit Jesuit 6-1 in the quarterfinal, and stunned Traverse City West (38-3) in the semi- final 3-1.

Matt noted the strong senior leadership. “We only had five seniors on the team but all played an integral role. Our seniors - Matt Held, Charles

Dunavan, Darren Rydzewski, Robert Zurawski, and Michael Kostuch - did a fantastic job of mentoring and bringing the younger players along. There was never a hint of jealously. They only wanted what was best for the team. They always put team first.”

The Pilots finished the 2016 season at 28-13, and had a 10-10 record in the CHSL.

“The foundation for our pro-gram is the work that we put in during the offseason,” said Matt. “We had tremendous ‘buy in’ during our winter early morning workouts, and it paid off during the playoff run. Our goal in the offseason is to make us mentally and physically tougher, so when the June playoffs come around, we are ready to perform.”

Golf Team Continues Run at State Finals

Congratulations to DLS Varsity Swim Coach Jim Singelyn, ‘90, named the Division 2 Swim Coach of the Year by the Michigan Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (MISCA). The Pilots just missed taking the Division 2 Title at the MHSAA Finals in

March 2016, and were consistently ranked in the state’s Top Ten during the 2015-2016 season.

Jim is student teaching Social Studies at De La Salle this semester, with Thaier Mukhtar.

Coach of the Year

The DLS Varsity Golf Team, un-der Veteran Coach Doug McKay, returned to the state finals for the 20th time since 1994, fin-ishing fourth behind Catholic Central, Grosse Pointe South, and Grand Blanc. Jon Brillati, ‘16, and Anthony Comito, ‘18, earned Division 1 All State Honorable Mention; Jon set a school record for the best finish by an individ-ual on the second day of the state finals, with a 148.

The Pilots faced Catholic Central during CHSL play, and Grosse Pointe South in regional competi-tion and district competition.

In the Regional Championship,

New Hockey Coach

Craig Staskowski, a high school hockey coach for the last 12 years, took over as the Pilots’ head varsity hockey coach in May, follow-ing the retirement of long-time coach Dan Barry. Barry retired after the 2015-2016 season, after 13 years as the Pilots’ leader. Most recently Craig was head Coach for Rochester United, where he’s had 11 All-Staters, and two players named to the state Dream Team.

A Social Studies teacher at Warren Woods Middle School, Craig has been a hockey official for over 20 years at all levels, and is Vice President of the Michigan High School Hockey Coaches Association.

Anthony Comito took first place individual overall, and Justin McCown, ‘19, took third as the Pilots edged Grosse Pointe South, the District Champions. The Pilots were third at Districts.

The team also won the Macomb County Golf Championship for the third straight year, finishing one stroke ahead of second place Utica Eisenhower/Ford II. Jon Brillati, Nico Ciavaglia ‘16, and Anthony Comito earned All-Macomb County honors.

In the CHSL, the Pilots had away wins at Brother Rice and Cranbrook, and finished with a 6-2 CHSL record. In 16 tourna-

ments, the Pilots had 16 Top Ten finishes.

Overall, the Varsity Golfers earned All-State, All-Academic Team honors, and Joe Taras, ‘16, earned All-State, All-Academic Individual Honors.

Coach McKay said, “The 2016 DLS Golf Season was memorable for a number of reasons, but mainly this year because all the players contributed during the course of the season, not just one or two. It was truly a team effort with some of the best chemistry amongst the team that I have ever had, and the results show the ef-fort - one of the best seasons ever.”
