Free to Soar One windy spring day, I observed young people having fun using the wind to fly their kites. Multicolored creations of varying shapes and sizes filled the skies like beautiful birds darting and dancing in the heady atmosphere above the earth. As the strong winds gusted against the kites, a string kept them in check.

Instead of blowing away with the wind, they arose against it to achieve great heights. They shook and pulled, but the restraining string and the cumbersome tail kept them in tow, facing upward and against the wind. As the kites struggled and trembled against

the string, they seemed to say, “Let me go! Let me go! I want to be free!” They soared beautifully even as they fought the imposed restriction of the string. Finally, one of the kites succeeded in breaking loose. “Free at last” it seemed to say. “Free to fly with the wind.”

Yet freedom from restraint simply put it at the mercy of an unsympathetic breeze. It fluttered ungracefully to the ground and landed in a tangled mass of weeds and string against a dead bush. “Free at last” free to lie powerless in the dirt, to be blown helplessly along the ground, and

How much like kites we sometimes are. Hashem gives us restrictions and rules to follow from which we can grow and gain strength. Restraint is a necessary counterpart to the winds of opposition. Some of us tug at the rules so hard that we never soar to reach the heights we might

We’re pretty used to hearing that CoQ10 is good for the heart, but little emphasis has been made to date on its kidney-protective effects. Why should you care? Because the number of Americans that are affected by chronic kidney disease is growing. In fact, approximately 13% of Americans have chronic kidney disease. This is a condition in which your kidneys are damaged and don’t filter waste properly. It can lead to problems such as cardiovascular and even bone disease.Kidney disease can progress to end-

stage renal failure, an illness which can only be treated by dialysis or kidney transplantation. However, if chronic kidney disease is treated in time, kidney function can be preserved. Research actually shows that CoQ10

CoQ10 Guards Kidneys Against Oxidative StressEach day your kidneys produce about

examining markers such as creatinine, BUN, albumin, and protein urine levels. The kidneys filter these compounds, and elevations may signal kidney damage or disease. At the University of Tokyo, rats given

CoQ10 (also known as ubiquinol) showed decreases in albumin levels after being subjected to a kidney-damaging procedure.The CoQ10 was found to be helpful

in preserving kidney function. The researchers concluded, “Ubiquinol may be a candidate for the treatment of patients with kidney disease.”Other studies show CoQ10 inhibits

rises in urine protein levels and prevents elevations in creatinine when given along with alpha tocopherol.

problem in the US. It can significantly alter your quality of life and increase your risk for multiple diseases. CoQ10 is a valuable nutrient that both

INGREDIENTS:Rolls:½ cup warm water2 tablespoons active dry yeast2 tablespoons sugar3 ½ ounce package instant vanilla pudding½ cup butter, melted2 eggs1 teaspoon salt6+ cups flourFilling:1 cup butter, softened to room temperature2 cups brown sugar4 teaspoons cinnamonFrosting:8 ounces cream cheese½ cup butter, softened to room temperature1 teaspoon vanilla3 cups confectioner’s sugar2-3 tablespoons milkDIRECTIONS:In a small bowl combine water, yeast and sugar. Stir until dissolved. Set aside. In large bowl, take pudding mix and prepare according to package directions. Add butter, eggs and salt. Mix well. Then add yeast mixture. Blend. Gradually add flour; knead until smooth. Do not over flour the dough! It should be very soft but not sticky. Place in a greased bowl. Cover and let rise until doubled. Then roll out on floured board to 34 X 21 inches in size. Take 1 cup soft butter and spread over surface. In bowl, mix 2 cups brown sugar and 4 teaspoons cinnamon. Sprinkle over the top. Roll up very tightly. With knife put a notch every

1 1/2 inches. Cut with thread or serrated knife. Place on lightly greased cookie sheet 1 inch apart. Cover and let rise until double again. Bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes. Remove when they start to turn golden (don’t over bake). Frost warm rolls with cream cheese frosting (combine butter and cream cheese and mix well, then add vanilla and sugar and mix again, then add milk for desired consistency). Makes about 24 very large rolls.*Freezable Recipe: After shaping the rolls and placing them on the baking sheet, cover with lightly greased saran wrap and a layer of tin foil. Store in the freezer. The night before you want to serve them take out the rolls and put them in the refrigerator. Let them thaw in the refrigerator. Take them out about 8-9 hours after being in the refrigerator and let them rise until doubled. Bake according to the recipe. (If you have less time, you can take the rolls out of the freezer and let them come to room temperature on the counter – about 4 hours, then let rise until doubled).

Dr. Lee Berk at the Loma Linda School of Public Health in California found that laughing lowers levels of stress hormones, and strengthens the immune system.

Laughter increases levels of a hormone called beta-endorphines (which elevates mood state) by 27% and increases human growth hormone by 87%. Human growth hormone (HGH) is used to treat patients with hormone deficiencies and has been shown to improve the immune system, bone and muscle mass, and reduces body fat. This is the same hormone that athletes use to improve their athletic performance in their sports.

Laughter also has been shown to reduce levels of three stress hormones: cortisol, dopac, and epinephrine. Epinephrine is also known as adrenaline, the hormone that triggers the “fight-or-flight” response when we are afraid. At chronic levels, these three hormones can harm the immune system’s function as well as contribute to other detrimental health effects.

Berk also found that mirthful laughter raised good cholesterol and lowered inflammation during a test of the effects of laughter on diabetic patients.
