Message from the Pastor: Yes, vacation time is over and the school year has begun! Even though the hot temperatures
this week tell us that summer is still here we are starting to get back into our routines with our
families and responsibilities. For those with school children, let us pray that the Holy Spirit will
open their minds and hearts for learning and guide them to keep good Christian values in all
that they do. With everyone’s busy schedules – after school sports, jobs, running here and
there – a family dinner a few times a week could provide an informal platform to share our
happy times or perhaps give family members an opportunity to discuss some of their challenges
or burdens. No words can say it better than the last paragraph from the upcoming World
Meeting of Families prayer and I recommend that you pray this together at your meals:
May the example of the Holy Family,
with the aid of your Holy Spirit,
guide all families, especially those most troubled,
to be homes of communion and prayer
and to always seek your truth and live in your love.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen
In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches the disciples what they have gradually come to discover: He is
indeed the Messiah. But He is the Messiah who must suffer and die. Peter found this hard to
accept. He is so shocked at Jesus' words about suffering and death that he fails to hear the
most important part of the revelation about who Jesus is and what He is to accomplish. He
fails to grasp that through death Jesus will be raised to new life. Peter was thinking in human
terms, not God's. Jesus said to his disciples that they, too, must suffer: “Whoever wishes to
come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” This assurance of new life
is what gives us the courage to take up our cross and follow Jesus.
Please welcome Eileen Matarazzo, our new Youth Minister, and Mary McCarrick, our new
Confirmation Coordinator. They will be a welcome addition to our staff and to the needs of
the Youth of our Parish. Their contact information will soon be listed on the cover of the
Bulletin.
Looking forward to seeing you all at our Parish Centennial Family Picnic next Sunday starting at
2pm at the Mahwah Elks!
Have a great week!
God Bless you.
Fr. Jacek

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament takes place this Friday and Fridays to come from
12:30PM to 6:00PM closing with Benediction. "When you look at the Crucifix,
you understand how much Jesus loved you then. When you look at the Sacred Host you understand how much Jesus loves you now."
- Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta
The young man was at the end of his rope. Seeing no way out, he dropped to his knees, in prayer. “Lord, I can’t go on,” he said, “I have too many crosses to bear.” The Lord replied, “My son, if you can’t bear its weight, just place your cross inside this room. Then, open that other door, and pick out any cross you wish.” The man was filled with relief. “Thank you Lord,” he sighed, and he did as he was told. Upon entering the other door, he saw many crosses, some so large the tops were not visible. Then, he spotted a tiny cross leaning against a far wall. “I’d like that one, Lord,” he whispered. And the Lord replied, “My son that is the cross you just brought in.”
September 16th is the last day to obtain your picnic tickets. Please bring your payment to the Parish office during office hours.
This year, Catechetical Sunday will focus on the theme,
“Safeguarding the Dignity of Every Human Person” Those who have been designated by the community to
serve as catechists will be called forth to be
commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is
a wonderful opportunity to reflect upon the role that
each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on
the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical
Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate
themselves to this mission as a community of faith.
On September 20, 2015 our parish will join Catholic
parishes across the country in celebrating Catechetical
Sunday with a commissioning of catechists at the 10:30
AM Mass. Please join us in sincere gratitude for our
catechists who volunteer to share their faith with our children. May God bless their efforts, and yours, all
through the year!
Centennial Tidbits
On May 14, 1916, Bishop Ernest Coppo, SDB officiated at the dedication of the new Church. In terms of seating capacity, slightly more than 100 people could be accommodated and the sanctuary measured approximately 12 feet x 20 feet. But for parishioners who had dug deep into almost empty pockets, the church was an answer to their prayers. Father Patalong retired after 20 years of service, providing his people with a beautiful church, classrooms and a social hall. He brought life and love into the hearts of his people. Highly respected and well remembered who could ask for more. Fr. Eugene Palumbo SDB
