LEAD :: 2016 Non-Profit Day

Ballot Issue

The Independence Chamber of Commerce has announced its support of renewal of the Police Sales Tax passed on January 21, 2004. The Independence Chamber Board of Directors voted unanimously to support renewal of the tax on February 10, 2016, at the monthly Board of Directors meeting.

This tax renewal would be a one-eighth cent sales tax for the Police Department for a period of 12-years. With renew-al of the tax, the Police Department will continue to provide their excellent services. Without renewal of the tax, the departments will be unable to continue its current services and would need to reduce staff.

Our L.E.A.D. group spent Thursday, February 18, touring some of our incredible non-profits in the city. The sites they visited included the Salvation Army, Community Services League, Hillcrest Ministries, Child Abuse Prevention Association and Drumm Farm Center for Children. The group ended their day at the Truman Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

Please vote YES for renewal of the Police tax on April 5, 2016.

On Wednesday, February 17, the Independence Chamber had the pleasure of hosting Mayor Eileen Weir for her State of the City Address at our Monthly luncheon. We had over 170 attendees, including six other mayors from surrounding cities. The clear collaborative spirit and positive energy in the room reminded us all that our community is doing, and will continue to do, great things.

TESTIMONIAL“My absolute favorite thing about

the Independence Chamber is the relationships that I have formed

through our shared experiences of the Chamber. Whether it was the best hamburgers at Courthouse Exchange, the amazing artwork

at the Gallery in the Truman Courthouse, the wine tasting at a vineyard, or simply attending a lunch or a meeting with fellow chamber members, I have been

able to get to know some amazing citizens and business owners of Independence. I have learned, I have laughed, and I feel lucky to have the honor to meet and

know so many great people who come together in cooperation and encouragement to build business

in our great city. My favorite thing...I have added many friends

to my life and I am thankful.”

Laurie Dean Wiley, Junior Services League

“I’m so glad I came to this event. The procurement officers knew exactly who I should be speaking with, gave me all the contact information I needed, and made sure to communicate to them that I’d be in touch. This one day gave me more warm leads than I typically get in a month.”

“You have a relationship with your customer. It has to be a two-way street so be a good conversationalist!” That was one of the first pieces of advice Kim Beer gave us in the seminar she presented on February 23. Most of the attendees admitted they were on LinkedIn but had no idea how to utilize it, which is apparently very common.

“It is a slow moving social media avenue which is actually good for busi-ness professionals.” Rather than putting a ton of pressure on us to “keep up,” she explained that spending 15 minutes a week on LinkedIn, “is more than most people spend in a month.”

Take advantage of this social networking tool with over 400 million users with some of the following tips:

1. Make sure your profile is completely filled out. 2. Create a great “headline” - this is the one place you want stand out and be clever.3. Your summary should be “rich” with industry buzz words.4. Participant in groups where you can be the expert - that’s where your customers are.5. Understand that “recommen- dations” carry a lot of weight so make a “recommendations” plan - give a recommendation to three people and ask three others for recommendations twice a year.
