New CSO on the Be-wdley beat

Bewdley has a new Community Support Officer on thebeat following the arrival of Nicholla Fice, who hasjoined the Local Policing Team for the town.

Nicholla has completed seven weeks initial training at WestMercia Police’s headquarters at Hindlip and replaces CSOHollie Tipper who recently left the team at Bewdley.

She is originally from Dudley but moved to Wolverleyabout four years ago to live with her partner and has built

up a good knowledge of Bewdley during her time in the district.

She said she had joined the police as she enjoyed a challenging role and would get satisfaction from a job that involved helping people.

“I am really lucky being based at Bewdley because it is a lovely town with some smashingpeople,” she said. “I hope to become a valuable member of the Local Policing Team and thatpeople will feel they can approach me if they have got any concerns.”

She has already been involved in issuing crime prevention advice and providing reassuranceto residents following several burglaries in the Hill Farm area of Bewdley.

In her spare time Nicholla enjoys horse riding and helping out on the farm at Bodenham Ar-boretum, Wolverley, which is managed by her partner.

Editorial

You may have heard me mention next door’s hens before in this space. Well, Ifound Florence, an elegant Maran hen, pacing anxiously round my brassicas theother day, and while wondering how on earth she’d climbed the eight-foot fencebetween her hen-run and aforesaid brassicas, I heard a knock on the door.

“Can I have my hen back, please?” Nigel politely asked. Florence didn’t give in easily. Shewhizzed three times round the vegetable garden before diving in the open back door to check outmy soft furnishings. After a short struggle, Nigel emerged triumphant, with Florence clasped to hischest. We both quite enjoyed the chase, but I can’t help hoping none of her friends feel likecopying her holiday plans.Florence isn’t the only one to have come to the end of her holiday. Now that winter’s here, mostof the visitors to our town have packed up and gone and Bewdley goes back to its winteractivities. We can look back on another highly successful Festival last month, and a glance at our“What’s On” page reveals numerous organisations and events there to give us plenty ofalternatives to an evening in front of the telly. Each month, as the reports and notifications ofevents come in, I marvel at the energy of the volunteers who keep our town going. Behind everyclub and event can be found people giving time and energy to making it happen. I’ve spokenbefore about these unsung heroes; winter is when they are at their busiest.Of course, that applies to our community magazine as well. Staffed by volunteers (I am merelythe nosey one but the others put in many hours of their time each month), and delivered by ourfaithful helpers, we rely on all our readers to supply the news and articles that appear eachmonth. If nothing ever happened in Bewdley, there’d be no magazine! So if you have a tale totell, an event to publicise or a photo you would like others to see, send it in. The addresses andcontact details are below; go on, people love to read about what we’re all doing. Florence may need to spread her wings to see what’s over the fence, but I can get to seeBewdley here at my computer! Margaret Ashmore

Bewdley Writers Guild is afledgling venture, which is hoping to attract members fromthe area. The Bewdley aspect of

the guild is that the membership shouldcome from the Bewdley area. The subjectmatter of work can be far ranging. It isproposed that, if you are a poet, lyricist orshort story writer, the guild should meeton a regular basis to discuss each other’swork, swap ideas and organise competitions. Hopefully we will be ableto get some of the best works into print. If you are a keen writer and of a likemind, please contact

You move to a new area and you have a new job to settle in to, a new home tofind and perhaps schools to sort out for the kids. Once the initial hard work isover, you then start to think about how to meet people and build a social circle.Or perhaps you have been in the area for a long time but would like to expandyour horizons?

If you’re interested in coming along to a couple of evenings sosee if you like it, give one of us a ring. If you like, we caneven arrange for a couple of us to meet you in a pub for aninformal chat. We are a relaxed bunch and welcome all sorts- just as long as you enjoy social occasions and would like tobe able to put something back in to the community a couple of times a year. We look forward to hearing from you.

Sylvia does it againYet another successful ‘Sylvia’s Lunch’. Any who have not experienced one, really shouldmake sure they book for next year. She always arranges beautiful weather and, togetherwith her stalwart band of helpers, provides superb food – the puds are ‘to die for’.

This year we had a change of venue thanks to Joyce and Tony Redstall. Some 60 diners en-joyed not only their beautiful garden (I always wanted to know what was behind that highbrick wall) and the food, but excellent and friendly company.

Whilst we were royally entertained Sylvia managed to raise the magnificent sum of £620for the Children’s Society.

Thank You Sylvia, all of you helpers and all that came.

Bees

The museum is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday until the 20th December this year. However, our thoughts are turning to plans for next year. The Friends of the Museum areworking with the Museum and Grow with Wyre to develop a new permanent exhibition focusing on Bees. There has been a great deal of publicity surrounding the threats to the UKbee population and the implications for the environment; we would like to know what thesituation is locally. Honey has had a wide range of uses throughout history; we would be interested in memories of its use.If you have any information, artefacts or experience you feel may be useful, we would love tohear from you. GOLDEN OPPORTUNITIESHow Charity Christmas Cards raised more than

£75m*50 years ago, a small group of medical charities met to discuss ways of promoting sales oftheir cards; from that small beginning 'The 1959 Group of Charities' was formed and by 1964were selling cards from 10 empty shops in various town centres. In 1966, with sales rising, the Group was registered as a charity (no. 249039). In 1971 the name 'Cards for GoodCauses' (CFGC) was first mooted and by 1988 formally established as the trading arm of the1959 Group. Today CFGC is the largest multi-charity Christmas Card organisation in the UKwith around 350 temporary shops. In the past 5 years, charities have received over £20mfrom sales through CFGC, representing at least 75p in every single pound.

Sales begin on Thursday 5 November and we plan to celebrate the Golden Week, 16-21 Nov.We hope all our loyal supporters and volunteers will visit our shop in Bewdley Library andkeep the funds coming in. We are open 10.00-4.30 M/W/Th/F and 9.30-12.30 Sat - libraryclosed Tuesday. [Baxter Church, Kidderminster is also open daily for CFGC]

November: the start of the gardener’s winter.

Winter starts as plants reach a state of dormancy and yes, here we are, the mean daily temperature drops to 6 degrees or below towards the end of the month. Good gardening daysare few and far between and the biggest task of the month will be clearing and tidying up. Leaves should be collected for composting along with the tops of plants that have beentrimmed back, but burn anything showing signs of disease. Attention to garden clearing will paydividends next growing season by reducing garden diseases.

General tasks to be undertaken are as before: lawns should be repaired, turfed where neces-sary, aerated and given a final autumnal feed. Finish digging beds and borders; winter frosts willhelp to break down the soil. Fuchsias and geraniums have done their summer work, so it’s nowtime to lift them to overwinter indoors. Herbaceous plants will need to be cut down to aheight of 18 inches above ground level. If the weather relents to a warm spell, it’s not too lateto plant out, into their final position, hardy perennials that have been raised from seeds. How-ever, if winter has set in, this is best left to springtime. In the greenhouse, keep glass as clean as

possible to take maximum advantage of any light, and ventilate freely on warm days; but stop draughts and keep fog outwhen cool. Make the most of your gardening days, as the nights arelong.

November in the ForNovember in the For--estest

Autumn has its pluses and minuses. Though I feel sad at the end of the exuberance andwarmth of summer and the inevitable die-down of growth as winter approaches, I need toremind myself to enjoy the present. The leaf colours have been wonderful this year, broughton rapidly by the late summer drought and an early frost. The shapes and colours flung socarelessly at our feet are a source of delight and I cannot resist collecting them. I pick upcones too: they might be turned into Christmas decorations or just sit on the windowsill to be admired. The Wyre Forest has Douglas Fir, Scots and Corsican Pine, Euro-pean Larch, Western Hemlock and both Japanese and Western Red Cedar. See how manyyou can find!

This is the time to enjoy a briskwalk, making the most of thelonger views that have openedup in the forest with the loss ofthe foliage. Perhaps you will berewarded with a sighting of fallow deer as they search foracorns and beech mast to feedon (it seems to be a poor yearfor both). Frosty or mistymornings have their own at-mosphere, with sparkling icecrystals fringing each stem or

dewy cobwebs delicately draping fences, branches and ground. Why not join one of theHealth Walks every Tuesday and Sunday starting from the Visitor Centre at 11am? They arefree and their aim is to build fitness at a gentle pace. If you haven’t been before, come at10.30am to allow time to register with the volunteer leader.

“Regulars” have noticed that the pre-advertised re-routing of the easy access (Yellow) routehas now been implemented. One walker expressed her disappointment at losing “the nicestpart of the route”, and I apologised, but explained that the large numbers of educational vis-its to the Discovery Centre require areas of the forest, where we can be sure that there isno contamination with dog faeces (there, I’ve said it!). The alternative would be to tell thechildren not to touch anything!

Pre-school children and their carers can meet every term-time Thursday from 10am to11am for forest-based play and activities with Forest Friends, led by the Discovery Centre’sstaff.

For more information on any of these please ring 01299 266929.

Mrs. Beryl Bubb informedmembers of the change of date and venuefor the Christmas Lunch, which would nowbe on Monday December 14th at theBlack Boy Wribbenhall. The speaker Mr. R.Richardson talked about his trip to Peru withmany interesting slides of the people, theirclothes, hats and villages. He also showedslides of the ruined Inca city of Machu Picchu. We marvelled at the effort it took to climbto the site and how he coped with altitudesickness. The October meeting was held onthe 12th at Riverside Church, Dog Lane Be-wdley, when Mrs. S. Merrill gave a talk enti-tled “From one pig to another”.

Visitors and new members are always welcome.

A “What you doing then?B “ Thinkin’”A “ Oh are, wot about?B “All them ducks on the river then”A “Well there are a lot of ‘em this year”B “I was thinkin’ about what we could do with them. For a start we could make a

charge for feedin’em, make a bit of money from the tourists like. We could sell alicence for a pound to feed em, but only corn and that’s another pound a bag.”

A “ Why only corn?”B “’S’obvious innit”, you could feed ‘em up an’ make that “Patty’s four grass stuff” and

then sell it in one of the shops”A “That’s a good un, and we could sell the feet to the posh cafes where boiled duck’s

feet am a delicacy.”B “An’ that’s a good un as well, course we could always use the feathers to make quills

for the school kids so they could write like we did with pen and ink, none of thiscomputa stuff or biro things. An then we could use the other feathers to stuff intothese quilty things, you know, so you only need make the bed once every couple ofweeks.”

A “Great idea, we could make loads of money and put Bewdley Duck into all thebutchers around here. Now then how many are there?”

B “Well loads really but most of them are geese!”Anon

All Saints' and Wribbenhall Together

As I write this the cold of the British winter seems to have started to flex its muscles with early morning frosts & verychilly winds. These, coupled with the earliersunset times and later sun rise times, caneasily start one’s mind in a depressive downward spiral as the gloom of the winterperiod is allowed to blanket one’s emotions. But hold on: doom and gloom is a state ofmind for many people, one which if thebrightness and loveliness of this time of yearis reflected on, looked for and experienced canchange the whole way one feels. Bright bluesky and lovely sunshine, the various flowersand trees all decked out in their winter glory, the chance to wrap up warm and “kick theleaves”, the opportunity to spend time withothers in a warm place all bring their ownrays of sunshine into our hearts. For many the meeting with someone elsecan be difficult. Who to see, where to goand still feel safe & secure. Sometimes it’seasier to sit alone rather than make the effort to meet with & chat to others. Butonce experienced, chatting over life’s challenges & successes can be one of the

best moves made. So back to the question“where to go whilst feeling appreciated andsafe, where others want to chat to you, hearyour news?”Have you heard about this Monday projectin All Saints’ Church Wribbenhall?Do you know the Church is open everyMonday, except bank holidays, and the kettleis on with the Monday Girls wanting to meetyou, ready to spend time with you?Are you aware that each Monday experts ina wide ranging list of subjects make themselves available to help all those whoneed support & advice?Do you accept that you don’t need to worryabout popping in on your own?So can I invite you to come along. Look outfor our colourful posters around Wribbenhall & Bewdley telling you how theexpert on the following Monday can helpyou or read our report on the Communitypage in “The Shuttle”. Community News

Dear Readers,

In our dealings with the public it isapparent that most people have no idea ofhow the modern police service operates. That is not really surprising as the policehave never been good at promoting whatwe actually do. Public perception seems tobe based upon fictional TV series, or highlyselective and edited programmes aboutpolice officers ‘in action’, none of whichbare any resemblance to reality. The vastmajority of what fills our working shifts isunseen and for many reasons does notenter the public realm.

So how is Bewdley policed? Firstly todispel a common myth, Bewdley does nothave its own police ‘force’ that dealsexclusively with everything that happens inBewdley. That is a very simplistic conceptfrom the ‘Dixon of Dock Green’ era ofpolicing, often viewed through rose-tintedspecs as ‘the good old days’ when life wastougher but more straightforward. Today’sofficers face far broader, greater and morecomplex demands than was experienced byour predecessors, necessitating a fluid andflexible style of policing.

Most of the officers who patrol the townon Friday and Saturday evenings cover thewhole of Wyre Forest. If you are a victimof crime, the officer who deals with youwill probably come from Kidderminster orStourport. They are supported by doghandlers and Road Policing officers fromWorcester or Rubery, or by detectives andscenes of crime officers fromKidderminster, Bromsgrove or Redditch, orspecialist officers from HQ, to name but afew. You may have noticed that we also

have the noisiest helicopter we could buy.

So who is in Bewdley police station? Weare your Local Policing Team, probably theclosest thing to ‘the good old days’ that youare going to get. We work predominantlyin Bewdley and the surrounding rural areas, and our role is essentially communityreassurance and long term problem solving. We work in partnership with local peopleand organisations, and provide advice andsupport to many others. We are a smallteam, as you will note from our contactdetails, recently enhanced by two newLocal Response officers, PC’s Tim Macraeand Ash Bloor. Contrary to popular beliefand expectations, we each have a home lifethat we are entitled to, which means that attimes there is no one in Bewdley policestation. But clearly, as I have outlinedabove, that does not mean that no one ispolicing Bewdley.

If you are genuinely interested in how wepolice, rather than merely seeking a stick tobeat us with, drop in to any of our PACTsurgeries in the Youth Café for a chat. Asmy mom often says, “you shouldn’t believethe rubbish they put on the telly!”

The next PACT meeting, with localCouncillors and other communityrepresentatives present, will be at

Bewdley Baptist Church, High St.,at 6.30 p.m. on Wednesday 18th

November.

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 5th OCTOBER 2009

Town Centre Works

The Council were advised that contrary to what had been anticipated for more than a yearthe proposed works to be carried out in Load Street, which would necessitate closure in theNew Year, would not be carried out by Balfour Beatty but by a different contractor -Enterprise. This decision had been taken by Severn Trent who are coordinating the worksand the contract. The Town Clerk is seeking confirmation that the assurances givenpreviously that the works would be carried out in January/February remain in place and thatthe work will not be delayed.

Civic SpaceAfter much debate it was agreed that to prevent parking within the Civic Space area onSevernside South, the Town Council would request the County Council to extend and linkup the double yellow lines across the York stonework. The Council had previously hopedthis could be avoided but none of the other options put forward were as easy to implementor to enforce.

Footpath - Dowles Road to River Severn via Greenacres LaneThe Council were keen to support the inclusion on the Definitive Footpaths Map of a rightof way on foot from Dowles Road to the River Severn along Greenacres Lane. The CountyCouncil had spent a lengthy period (13 years!) gathering evidence to show that this right ofway existed and should be classed as a public footpath despite opposition from someneighbouring landowners.

The Bewdley School & Sixth Form CentreThe Planning Committee had an initial look at extensive plans drawn up by the CountyCouncil for the redevelopment of the Bewdley School and Sixth Form Centre. As this was amajor application, it was agreed to invite a representative of the County Council to talkthrough the details at a future meeting before submitting comments.

Wribbenhall Millennium Green Trust AGMThe date for the Annual General Meeting of the Trust has been fixed for Monday 9thNovember at 7.00pm in The Guildhall. All members of the public are welcome to attend.

PENN & COACCOUNTANTS

ELDERLY TAX PAYERS You may be entitled to a tax refund.

H M Revenue have recently written to tax payers who received a repayment in previousyears, advising them that they are no longer required to complete a tax return. This is misleading, as tax repayments will be lost if no return is submitted.

We have successfully secured repayments for clients who erroneously believed that their af-fairs were correct.

If you have received tax repayments before, speak to Nigel or Tim, who will advise you freeof charge, whether a submission would prove beneficial.
