First of all, I’d like to thank everyone for their kind enquiries about Florence. I have to tellyou that since becoming notorious, she has tried again for the limelight, and only the quickthinking of little Archie, Nigel’s son, saved us from another chase round the brassicas. I cantell you, she’s off my Christmas present list.

There, I’ve said it. That word. The day we all love to hate. When this arrives through yourletterbox – (and incidentally, thank you for noticing it’s always there for the first of themonth; the contributors all hate me for demanding their copy so early, but it has made surewe’re well in time each month) – the December page will be showing on the calendar, Adventcalendars will have been started, and women’s magazines will be flaunting their Countdownto Christmas supplements. Does anyone actually follow their meticulous timetables?

I’ve never met anyone who does. As for me, I’mout and proud on the subject of Christmaspreparations; everyone gets a book as a present, Ispend The Day with some dear friends and a turkey, and my house stays unashamedly streamerless.

Of course I shall enjoy the various festivities roundtown; our Christmas Lights get better every year, and I love to see Load Street empty of traffic andbuzzing with people. I shall sing carols and go tothe special services, and won’t say “Bah, Humbug”more than ten times.

In the hope that our readers have a very happyChristmas in whatever way they choose –

Season’s Greetings, Everyone – from all at The Bridge!

You move to a new area and you have a new job to settle in to, a new home tofind and perhaps schools to sort out for the kids. Once the initial hard work isover, you then start to think about how to meet people and build a social circle.Or perhaps you have been in the area for a long time but would like to expandyour horizons?

If you’re interested in coming along to a couple of evenings sosee if you like it, give one of us a ring. If you like, we caneven arrange for a couple of us to meet you in a pub for aninformal chat. We are a relaxed bunch and welcome all sorts- just as long as you enjoy social occasions and would like tobe able to put something back in to the community a couple of times a year. We look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you!

A huge thank you to everyone who supportedthe Traidcraft Sale in St Anne’s Church inNovember. We had a wonderful day, with salesof £4000 of Traidcraft goodies. This makes areal difference to the lives of our producerpartners in the developing world. One simple story shows the impact of ourpurchases. The raisins Traidcraft uses in itssnacks, cakes, bars and confectionery aresupplied by members of the EksteenskuilAgricultural Co-operative, who farm on islandsin the Orange River in South Africa. This yearthe co-op decided to use some of the Fairtradepremium to buy brightly coloured rucksacks forall the children in the local schools. Thechildren were carrying their books in plasticcarrier bags and in the rainy season they gotdamaged. One grateful headteacher describedthe day the rucksacks arrived as a blessing andthe gifts as manna from heaven.Check out StAnne’s if you missed the Christmas Fair as wehave an extended stall full of Christmas goodiesand gifts, or contact me direct to place anorder. But hurry, the beautiful craft items areselling out fast. Thanks again, your support forFairtrade really does change livesElaine Barbour [email protected]

Mystery DinerAfter a long hard week at work, there is nothing better than a lie in on aSunday morning, knowing that you have nothing to prepare for Sundaylunch.Arriving at the front door you are met by the resident St Bernard, givingyou the feeling that you are dining in your friends’ home. The decor is mainly cocoa brown and cream, with stripped pine mix 'nmatch tables and chairs with the hint of the chic country house feel.Sunday lunch menu consists of home made pate - this must be the best inthe county, prawn cocktail, melon or soup of the day; good wholesomeportions are served well, but still with that feeling of being at a friendshome.Traditional roast beef, lamb or pork, all served with a large portions ofvegetables, roast and boiled potatoes - the giant yorkshire puddings wereplate size and tasty, not a meal for anyone on a diet but then it was a Sundaylunch, so one day a week won't harm anyone. An excellent wine cellar is held and a delicious choice of nine home-madesweets, with cheese and biscuits, and a selection of teas and coffeescomplemented this super Sunday treat. One other point: the up to date and very tastefully decorated washrooms. Most of the time they are overlooked, but well-kept washrooms alwaysscore well with me.But where was I? At The Sun and Slipper at Mamble, well worth the driveout, not only on a Sunday but any day of the week, from Tuesday to Sunday.

Arty (GuideDogs for the Blind)

PuppyI am writing on behalfof Arty, the black

labrador puppy, to be found in the town andshops of Bewdley every day! Withoutexception, you have all welcomed him intothe community and it seems an appropriatetime to both thank and update you on hisprogress.Arty was born on 20th October 2008. Hecame to Bewdley on 3rd December, my firsttime as a puppy walker for the Guide DogAssoc. As a puppy walker, my role is toexpose the dog to as many different

environments as possible and teach it basiccommands. Thanks to you, the community, Arty is very'well socialised'. Like any youngster, obeyingand behaving can leave room forimprovement: but Arty is ready to move onto his basic training at Leamington in January. Many thanks to you all for your support ofboth Arty and me. I will keep you informedof his progress. I shall be introducing you to 'puppy numbertwo' in the New Year. Both Arty and I hope2010 will bring you all Peace, Health andHappiness.

Melissa’s winning bonfirenight safety poster

In early November, police and communityagencies were involved in ‘Not in myNeighbourhood week’. This Home Officeinitiative was to inform people of actiontaking place in their area to tackle crime andanti-social behaviour and to make theircommunities safer. Its aims were to increaseawareness of what the police and localagencies do. In Bewdley, in partnership withCommunity Wardens Kevin Roy and RobKautzner, we used the week to engage withthe up and coming citizens in three of ourlocal primary schools to increase theirawareness of unacceptable behaviour in theirneighbourhood and do something about it.Children in years 1 to 4 were asked to designa poster highlighting the dangers ofirresponsible use of fireworks. Thanks to the generosity of local businessesand fund raising by our ‘good egg’ PACTChair Rod Wilson we were able to give a 3rd,2nd and 1st prize to each school. The overallwinner was Melissa Lunnon from Far ForestPrimary School. The prizes were presentedby a ‘friendly lion’ from West Midlands Safari

Park. Our apologies go to the teaching staffat the schools who were left to deal with abunch of ‘hyper’ pupils for the rest of the day!A book has been purchased for each schoollibrary for all the children who took part inthe competition. Our thanks go to West Midlands Safari Park,Wyre Forest Community Housing, Allcock’sOutdoor Store, Friends of Bishops Wood,Teddy Grays, Bewdley Co-op, BewdleyMuseum, Forever Christmas, Vantage Chemist,Bewdley Books and Mayfair Holdings. We offer our very best wishes from Bewdley& Rural Local Policing Team to you all for thefestive season.CSO Jeni Bray & CSO Nicky Fice,

Walking

the Footpaths by Mike Ward

Rural walks and the scenic splendouraround us are part of the joys of livingin this wonderful county ofWorcestershire.

Living in the countryside means respectingthose who earn their corn from the land. For without the farmers, there would beno rural pleasures for the eye to behold.

Most farmers are happy to indulge ourrambling instincts as long as we observethe basic code of countryside conduct;sticking to the footpaths when they crossfarmland; closing gates behind us, keepingdogs on leads and cleaning up after them.

Ramblers only ask that footpaths are notblocked or turned into a gauntlet of bulls. And we hope farmers appreciate that thesepaths are at times difficult to discern evenon a modern map, and easy to stray off.

If we respect the farmers and their

property, if we treat our ruralsurroundings with due reverence, we canall share our rural delights as friendlyneighbours.

There will always be a minority of angryfarmers who resent anyone crossing theirland. Ramblers have been verbally abusedand even threatened with violence.

Deliberate obstruction of paths is one ploy, and some farmers will go out of their wayto scare walkers away. Why? They maywell have had bad experiences of ramblersabusing their rights.

While most rural dwellers know how tobehave, a minority of outsiders can makefarmers’ lives a misery and give honestwalkers a bad name.

And while the police will arrest an angryfarmer who threatens walkers with a 12-bore shotgun, the countryside vandalsoften escape with impunity.

Just as the law comes down hard on illegaluse of weapons, so farmers should beproperly protected against those whoblight their land or their livestock.

Bewdley Horticultural Society

Dull DecemberDecember is not the best month of the year forgardening. We are often beset by cold wet and windyweather, short days and very little sunshine. But, forthe hardy gardener there is always something thatcan be done, digging, cleaning, plot preparation andthinking. Despite everything the lawn still is a challenge;prepare areas for spring seeding, and mowers andscarifiers will need cleaning, oiling and dry storage butremember to stay off the lawn in frost and snow.Keep the greenhouse plants fairly dry and not toowarm when growth is at a low ebb; ventilate onwarmer days; keep slugs at bay and the area tidy. Ifstoring hydrangeas or fuchsias keep them in a coldgreenhouse or shed but don’t allow them to dry out.Check that stored tubers and dormant bulbousplants are protected from frosts as damage canspread from one to another. Continue to collect andcompost leaves and other organic materials for nextyear’s top dressing. Make sure outside taps and pipesare lagged against frost, shake heavy snowfall frombranches and shrubs to avoid breakages. Finally sit bythe fire and plan what you might want to order andplant for next season. Merry Christmas and good gardening for 2010.Stuart Williams

For me, December is about crisp mornings, the stark shapes of bare trees silhouettedagainst pale skies, the busy activity of greysquirrels searching out their winter stores ofnuts and acorns.

As the month progresses it is also aboutnoting the hollies with the best berries(plenty of choice this year) and the treeswith mistletoe. This strange plant is partiallyparasitic but won’t harm the host tree if it isonly present in small amounts. It has longbeen associated with magic and fertility buthas taken its place among Christmastraditions as a “kissing bough” hung abovethe door.

The borders remain a stronghold for theplant, which requires mild, damp weather anda good population of suitable trees such asapple, lime and poplar. It can provide someuseful extra income for orchard owners sosome introduce it on purpose by squashingthe berries on to fruit trees, mimicking theaction of a mistle thrush cleaning its beak.

Tenbury Wells is the centre of the trade inmistletoe and has auctions on 1st and 8thDecember, plus a Mistletoe Festival on 5th

December with all manner of 21st CenturyDruidic goings-on.

I was recently at the inaugural meeting of theFar Forest Orchard Group. 20 local peoplegot together to plan how to protect theirtraditional orchards. Grow With Wyre hastools for pruning and ladders for harvestingthat can be lent out. If you are interestedplease contact Mark Cleaver of the WyreCommunity Land Trust on (01299) 488083.

The Forestry Commission’s Wyre ForestDiscovery Centre will be showing familieswith children from 5 to 11 years old how tomake Christmas Decorations using naturalmaterials from the forest on Saturday 19thDecember from 10.30am to 12noon. Thecost is £3.50 per child and places need to bebooked on 01299 266929.

The Discovery Centre has also made aChristmas wreath for the display at St. Anne’sChurch as part of Bewdley’s ChristmasLights Festival on 5th December – we reallyare so lucky in this area to have such a richcommunity life. However you want to spendit, I wish you a very happy Christmas season.

PENN & COACCOUNTANTS

ELDERLY TAX PAYERS You may be entitled to a tax refund.

H M Revenue have recently written to tax payers who received a repayment in previousyears, advising them that they are no longer required to complete a tax return. This is misleading, as tax repayments will be lost if no return is submitted.

We have successfully secured repayments for clients who erroneously believed that their af-fairs were correct.

If you have received tax repayments before, speak to Nigel or Tim, who will advise you freeof charge, whether a submission would prove beneficial.

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 2nd NOVEMBER 2009 The Bewdley School & Sixth Form CentreThe Planning Committee were pleased to welcome Mr Dermot Galvin an Architect with theCounty Council to talk about the substantial redevelopment proposals for this School. TheCommittee were shown what were outline plans (as opposed to detailed plans) and agreed atthis stage to support the proposals in principle. They expressed concerns that some worksneeded off-site, such as improvements to footpaths and pavements, would not come out of thebudget allocated by the government’s Building Schools for the Future but instead would have tocome out of the County’s own highways budget which was already under strain. Whether thescheme can go ahead will be known in the New Year.Residents’ Parking SchemeThe Council meeting was noteworthy for the fact that in excess of 60 members of the publicattended and filled the Council Chamber and ante-room to express their anger at the decisiontaken by the District Council to enforce regulations that meant car parking was only available for23 hours per day and not continuous. Cllr John Campion, Leader of the District Councilrecognised the popular feeling and the impracticality of the changes and informed the meetingthat there would be a full review of the parking regulations. The Town Council encourages allresidents to make their views known to the District Council once the review gets underway inthe near future.High Street – TrafficCounty Councillor John Campion informed the meeting that having met with the Mayor andwitnessed for himself the ongoing traffic problems in the High Street, he would seek to get up-to-date information on the volume and speed of traffic; put up a mobile flashing speed activated signand look seriously at giving clearer priority at the difficult junction with Load Street.Town Council BudgetThe Town Council is putting together next year’s budget. It will be mindful of the need to keepany Council Tax increase down to a minimum. The Town Council’s functions and responsibilitiesare very limited and the overall amount it receives by way of a “precept” from local residents isjust over £80,000 ie £21.52 per average Band D household. However, Councillors did considerthat local residents should be given an opportunity of putting forward any suggestions for smallscale spending which could lead to an improvement in the appearance of the town and itsfacilities. If anyone would like to take up the offer then please do get in contact, preferably inwriting, with your Town Councillor or with the Town Clerk at the Guildhall.
