News from Great Totham Primary SchoolMessage from the Head teacher

Happy New Year. Wishing you all the best for a healthy and prosperous 2012. Keith Bannister Head teacher

School News: Partner SchoolsAs we embark on a new calendar year, many of us

will be making new year’s resolutions; at school, we will be endeavouring to further develop links with our two partner schools: Earlham Primary School in London and Mabali Kuta Lower Basic School in The Gambia.Earlham Primary SchoolEarlham Primary School is located in London (near Stratford). Over the years, a number of pupils from both schools have had the opportunity to meet on school trips. Some Earlham pupils even visited our school and gave a very interesting whole-school assembly at GTPS about their school and, in particular, how their neighbourhood has changed in the run-up to the Olympics. In October, Mr Bannister took the teachers to visit Earlham Primary and the parallel year group teachers. The New Year will see year groups from both schools working together on joint projects thus further developing our links and adding another dimension to our pupils’ learning. We’ll keep you informed...More information can be found on the school’s website: www.earlham.newham.sch.ukMabali Kuta Lower Basic SchoolIn February 2010, Mr Bannister and Miss Flynn were lucky enough to travel to The Gambia and meet the teachers, staff and pupils at our partner school, Mabali Kuta Lower Basic School. They received an extremely warm welcome and gained a valuable insight into school life in The Gambia. Mabali Kuta is a small village primary school and our pupils enjoy learning about The Gambia and the school. Mr Bannister brought back many photographs, video footage and artefacts which help to bring the partnership to life for our pupils.Teachers make links to The Gamiba within the curriculum wherever possible and the children enjoy receiving news and sometimes even work and correspondence from the pupils in The Gambia.More information about Mabali Kuta and other schools in the Bangsang area can be found on the charity Bangsang Educational Appeal’s website: www.bangsangeducationalappeal.org

THE BRAXTED PHONE BOX: “THE SMALLEST ART GALLERY IN   THE UK”

The Smallest Art Gallery in the UK' is now open for viewer or should that be viewer! The phone box in Great Braxted now displays on its back wall 29

pieces of art from villagers and friends of villagers. Organiser and artist, Euan Boyd-Wallis says, "The response from both professional and amateur artists that I received from my call for paintings was very encouraging and as a result I have enough paintings to make regular changes to the pieces of art on display. This I shall do and hope that it encourages return visits to the gallery. I also hope that artists will continue to produce new paintings to ensure that the project is a long standing one."  As a refreshing change and to buck the modern trend, there is no money involved ; paintings are generously donated by the artist and are placed for free with their only gain being the proud boast of being able to say, " I've exhibited a painting in The Smallest Gallery in the UK!"

If the gallery is locked a key is available from behind the bar at the Du Cane whose car park the phone box is in. Alternatively the paintings can be seen through the side panels of the phone box windows. The phone box itself is now a piece of installation art in its own right.  A long list of willing volunteers was taken on Braxted Fete day and the required 24 were drawn from a hat. The coloured panels that now decorate the phone box represent the feelings of those 24 Braxted residents as at precisely 11 a.m. on Wednesday, 2nd

November 2011.

Each volunteer/participant was asked to record their exact feelings at that time by Euan Boyd-Wallis who then collated these emotions and transferred them into a coloured panel - each panel representing the mood of a participant. The scale ranged from yellow, being a happy disposition, to black, being a feeling of despair. It’s pleasing to say there are no black panels! On 2nd November at 11am the Braxted residents are represented by: 4 yellow, 3 orange, 6 green, 7 purple and 4 blue.

CHURCH NEWSALL SAINT’S Great Braxted

A December Weekend at All Saints Church

We started off the Advent season in some style. On Saturday the 3rd there was a concert of Christmas music by

the ever popular “Connoisseurs”. The event was well attended by members of All Saints and St. Luke’s together with their families

and friends. Everyone enjoyed joining in with singing some popular carols. Drinks and mince pies were served in the interval and the raffle was drawn by Revd. Anne-Marie. About £400 was raised for Church funds. A wonderful evening.

The next day [4th] we had the Christingle service in the early evening to replace the usual morning service. This also was a great success and was very well attended and it was good to see so many children there. The candles in the Christingles when lit in the dark were lovely. The collection raised £150 for The Children’s Society.

A great start to the festive season.

It is the New Year now – we will enjoy the Jubilee and the Olympics, also an extra day as it is a leap year. The Christmas season is over and we now revert to the ‘normal’ range of services.

For the month of January the following pattern of services will apply:-
