It was an exhilarating moment, for all of us, 6,700 strong, and ultimately it left me feeling extremely proud of our Reform Movement, for the ideals of universal justice and compassion that it has actively and unwaveringly pur-sued. Just before President Obama arrived, we celebrated the fiftieth anni-versary of the Religious Action Center in Washington, the brain trust of the social justice initiatives of Reform Judaism. You will recall that the RAC was founded in 1961 by Kivie Kaplan, zl, a committed Reform Jew, who also served at that time as President of the NAACP. President Obama noted the anniversary at the beginning of his address. I want to congratulate all of you on the golden anniversary of the Religious Action Center . . . When President Kennedy spoke to leaders from the RAC in 1961, I was three months old, so my memory is a bit hazy. But I am very familiar with the work that youve done ever since, and so is the rest of America . . . And thats because you helped draft the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. You helped to liberate Soviet Jews. You have made a difference on so many of the defining issues of the last half-century. And without these efforts, I probably wouldnt be standing here to-day. So thank you. Thank you. You have brought to life your faith and your values, and the world is a better place for it. The president went on to deliver a wonderful speech, framed in fine homiletic style by one of the key words of the Torah portion of that week, as it was uttered by Joseph as he replied to his father Jacob. In Hebrew, that word is hineni. It translates to Here I am. Hineni. Its the same word Abra-ham uses to reply to God before the binding of Isaac. Its the same word Moses uses when God summons him from the burning bush. Hineni. The text is telling us that while Joseph does not know what lies ahead, he is ready to answer the call. I would urge you all to read the full text of President Obamas speech. You may find it in the highlights of the Biennial on the URJ website at: www.urj.org. No matter what party we may affiliate with, and no matter whom we may vote for when we exercise our rights as Americans next November, the principles of justice and fairness that the president articulated are, in my understanding of Jewish tradition, consistent with the teachings of our Jewish tradition as it has come down to us through the generations of our history. As Ameri-cans we may have divergent points of view as to how to achieve these goals. But ultimately they are consis-tent with Jewish goals, in our pursuit of Tikkun Olam, the reparation of our world. On Friday, January 20th, Bea Hanks, Abe Barnett, Lauren Phillips, Daniel Kirzane, John Golomb, and I will speak with you as a group about some of the highlights of the Biennial, the particular seminars we attended, and our impressions. I hope you will join us for this important presentation. And, if I may, I would put in a plug for you to begin gearing up to attend the next Biennial, which will be in San Diego in 2013. It is an ex-traordinary opportunity for all Reform Jews. -Rabbi Linda Henry Goodman 3 Officers Column Bringing You Up to Date As we start 2012, Id like to bring you up to date about some of the new things happening at Union Temple. Our Shabbat programming for pre-schoolers called, Friday at Four, led by Yoshie Fruchter now meets on a weekly basis and has growing attendance and participation. We have a functioning youth group being led by David Marx who is also one of the teachers in our Religious School. The initial get together was at the Tea Lounge on Union Street. The next event was a trip to a temple in New Rochelle for a North American Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY) Social Justice Day. One of our new members, Emily Campbell, is serving as parent liaison. Our first two family Shabbatot on the First Friday of the month were great successes. The service features par-ticipation by our Religious School students. Our principal, Daniel Kirzane, has emphasized the importance of this service to the students and parents and we see the results of that in the increase in the size of the turnout. Our adult choir, ably led by Temple Musician Shinae Kim, has grown in size and repertoire and welcomes ad-ditional members. The December Havdalah get together sponsored by Brotherhood and Sisterhood drew a large and diverse group of members and non-members to nosh and shmooze. Of course, this culminated with the short and beau-tiful participatory Havdalah service led by Rabbi Goodman. Afterwards, we walked as a group to enjoy First Saturday at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Weve had the first three sessions of the Engaging Israel series on Wednesday nights. The series features short videos prepared by the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem and discussions ably led by Rabbi Good-man. Everyone who has come to these sessions is looking forward to the next five. The Social Action Committee has been reactivated, is working on new programs and welcomes additions to its ranks. Best wishes for a happy and healthy 2012. -Henry Singer, Vice President Brotherhood of Union Temple invites you to a book reading The Blood of Lorraine by Barbara Corrado Pope. Sunday morning, January 22nd at 10 AM 4 ENGAGING ISRAEL Each of these eight sessions will combine video presentations by scholars at the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem, and text study based on the videos, conducted by our Rabbi. This series boldly confronts many of the challenges facing Israel at this time, with the academic rigor and moral cour-age emblematic of the Hartman Institute. From Crisis to Covenant Power and Powerlessness War and Occupation Religious Pluralism and Human Rights Religion and Peoplehood Morality on the Battlefield and more. Wednesday Evenings, 7:30-9:30 PM Next 2 segments: April 4, 11, 25 / May 23, 30 Because there are materials that will be distributed, please let us know if youd like to attend. Union Temple of Brooklyn 17 Eastern Parkway at Grand Army Plaza 718-638-7600 [email protected] Honoring Avrom Satzkever When I joined Union Temple 25 years ago because I married Joe Roschko, he en-couraged me to become more involved in Judaism (bless him for that.) I found that two parts of Jewish life were missing Social Action and Yiddish. I went about trying to introduce them both. I joined the board, chaired Social Action and pre-sented programs which introduced our members to Yiddish. The first program was about folk music, the second introduced the writing of the humorist Sholem Aleichem and last was a memoir on a family story of my father and me. The missing literary piece was poetry, so with the help of my wonderful Yiddish teacher, Nikolai Borodulin, we will introduce the poet Avrom Satzkever, perhaps the greatest Yiddish poet who died recently at the age of 96. On January 27th at our Fourth Friday Shabbat we will have a multi-media presentation on his life and work. Satzkever had a rich and varied life and he was a truly heroic figure. Just to sweeten the whole package, we will serve food with a middle-European flavor. DO COME! I know you will love this and thank me. -Zeva Roschko 5 Preschool Preschoolers Change with the Leaves December was filled with activity. We enjoyed our weekly yoga classes with April Cantor, our yoga teacher. We celebrated Shabbat every Friday with Yoshie Fruchter, our music teacher and we celebrated Chanukah. The Chickadees, Montana Vasquez-Grinnells twos class, are growing so fast! In the Big Room the sounds of children beginning to form friendships and creating games can be heard by all. In their classroom, they dis-cussed Chanukah with books, songs, toys and art projects. The children got a chance to make construction pa-per dreidels, and menorah "candles" for their Chanukah Luncheon. Theyve also started to talk about winter in the classroom. With the temperatures starting to dip, and the children wearing more layers, theyve started to read books about winter and how it is the season that comes after fall. The Sparrows and Starlings, Alex Beers twos and threes classes, have been studying the trees around them. They have collected dozens of beautiful, colorful leaves and used them for fall collages, leaf rubbings, and a stencil pro-ject that asks, Do YOU know which leaf belongs to the oak tree? How about the gingko? Ash? Maple? These projects, in conjunction with the 3-year-olds' weekly explorations outside to look at trees and the changes they make at this time of year, serve to heighten the children's awareness of their environment. They are also fun ways to get those little hands dirty and encourage the discovery of things as students in a group. It's amazing what a simple walk around the block can teach us when we're sharing our observations with peers! The Robins, Christine Bardachs three class, have been very interested in the changes brought about by the fall season. They collected colorful leaves, acorns and seed balls from different trees and compared them. They decorated paper leaves as a group as well as individually. Their work is displayed in the classroom. Now that the children are able to participate in a group for a longer period of time, two new songs have been added to circle time- one about the weather and the second one about the days of the week. The Hummingbirds, Pam Apples fours class, have been working on a Feelings Unit. They have talked about many different feelings both positive and negative. The children wrote classroom books about what makes them happy, sad and frustrated. They have also read lots of books on the topic; I was so Mad, Sometimes I Like to Cry, The Grouchy Ladybug, Walter Was Worried, Feelings, A is for Angry, Glad Monster, Sad Monster and When Sophie Gets Angry-Really, Really Angry. The Hummingbirds have also been discussing body lan-guage and the message that your body sends when you talk to people. The book, Little Prickles, focuses on a not so friendly porcupine who says, Go away, Im too prickly, whenever his friends ask him to play. Conse-quently, the porcupine was very lonely. He finally realizes that his actions and body language are telling oth-ers that he was not interested in playing. The children loved this book and enjoyed acting it out. They found it very funny to pretend to be Mr. Prickles and to be grumpy and not look their friends in the eye. This book con-veyed many valuable social lessons about asking to play and how your body language speaks volumes about whether you want to play with others or not. The feelings curriculum translated to colors and music when they visited the Brooklyn Museum. Kristin, our museum educator, read a book about emotions and discussed how colors could express emotions: blue could translate to sadness and red to excitement. They made musical in-struments with Kristin in the classroom and brought them to the museum. They looked at photographic por-traits and guessed how the people in the photos were feeling and would shake their instruments to make the sounds of excitement, boredom, sadness etc. -Susan Sporer, Director 6 Religious School Religious School Students Light the Way Shalom! When the school year began, I quoted Proverbs 22:6: Educate a youth in the path he ought to go; Even as he grows old, he will not swerve from it. This month I have been proud that the Union Temple Religious School has demon-strated beautifully how to walk a Jewish path of spirituality, community and eth-ics. On November 4th, 20 families came together for our inaugural First Fridays Shabbat service, the highest participa-tion rate in recent memory! Students helped to lead the service, and families had the opportunity to dine together as a community. Teachers, families, staff, and other congregants mingled in this opening session of our monthly tradition, and when December 2nd rolled around, we once again came together as a happy and supportive community to celebrate Shabbat! Additionally, on November 20th, the Religious School contributed to Union Temples annual Food Drive at Key Food for CHIPS. Every class participated in some way and combined their good work with learning about tikkun olam, repairing the world. Students shared how they can help make the world a better place, making their food drive experi-ence personal to their own lives. As Chanukah lights up our lives with the warm glow of the holiday lights, I celebrate the shin-ing education that our students are experienc-ing at Union Temple. Many thanks to all who have helped start this year off with such great momentum, and heres to a spring filled with even more meaningful learning! -Daniel Kirzane, Educator Union Temple Religious School Students collected food for CHIPS during a Thanksgiving food drive. Handing out flyers to shoppers in front of the Seventh Avenue Key Food about the food collection for CHIPS. 7 We hope that everyone had a great Chanukah and a wonderful new year. With some long, cold nights ahead its a great time to catch up on some reading and a perfect book to pick up would be The Blood of Lorraine by Barbara Corrado Pope. Thats because on Sunday morning, January 22nd at 10 AM, Andy Mirer will be leading the Brotherhood discussion about the book. Its about a magistrate living in Lorraine, France who is battling anti-Semitism in the wake of the Dreyfus Affair. All are invited to share in a fascinating discussion and, of course, bagels and coffee. Brotherhood would also like to thank Rabbi Goodman for leading the Brotherhood and Sisterhood Havdalah service last month. After a lovely service marking the end of Shabbat, the group went over to the Brooklyn Museum of Art for their First Saturday festivities. -David Rapheal, Secretary Brotherhood Book it with Brotherhood CLOTHING COLLECTION FOR PROJECT HOPE: CLOTHING ON HANGERS PLEASE! The Social Action Committee of Union Temple plans to sponsor a clothing drive this coming Spring 2012, the pro-ceeds of which will be donated to Project Hope, an organi-zation dedicated to helping disadvantaged adults re-enter the work force. As in the past, we are asking for donations of gently worn clothing for men and women that is appropriate for the workplace, such as: suits, jackets, blazers, smart casual skirts and slacks, shirts, coats and shoes. We have always had a wonderful response by our Temple members and the local community and hope to continue with this worthwhile project; however, we need to ask for your help in changing the method of collection. ALL CLOTHING YOU PLAN TO DONATE NEEDS TO BE PLACED ON HANGERS PRIOR TO COLLECTION SO THAT IT CAN BE HUNG IN THE TEMPLE CLOSET UPON ARRIVAL. Although many of our contributors have done this already, many have not, requiring that volunteers sort through heavy bags and hang the garments one by one--a difficult and time consuming process. So, please, save that suit! Hold on to that dress! It will become a most welcome contribution to the Project Hope clothing drive. And if you no longer have room in your home and wish to make a contribution of workplace clothing prior to this Spring, please bring it to Union Temple on a hanger and well hang it in our closet! 8 Here we are at the beginning of a brand-new year, with all its hope and promise. Sisterhood has great plans for 2012, and we're confident you'll want to be with us to share in all the excitement. Go to that colorful new cal-endar you just hung on the wall and circle Sunday, February 12th. If you have Magic Markers, you may want to make that circle in a warm, delicious brown, for that's the day we'll be celebrating Jews and Choco-late. Join us at 10 AM. that morning for a yummy discussion of the role chocolate plays in our lives and to sample all kinds of delectable goodies. Before you put that marker away, lift the next page of your calendar and circle Wednesday, March 21st. We'll be meeting at 6 PM that day at the Museum of Jewish Heritage to explore its exciting Emma Lazarus exhibit. It is the first major exhibit devoted to this great Jewish American poet, and it brings new insights into her life, her work, and her world. Watch this space and your mail for more information about these programs and many more that we have planned. We have lots of surprises in store for you, and we hope you'll be sharing them with us as a member. It's never too late, so if you haven't yet joined or renewed your membership, just mail a check for $36 to Sister-hood of Union Temple. What better way to start the new year than by sharing in our mission of Tikkun Olam? Sisterhood wishes everyone a happy, healthy, prosperous new year. May 2012 bring joy, peace, and blessings into our lives, our homes, and our world. -Barbara Brett, Secretary Sisterhood Chocolate!
