Dear Friends, EASTERTIDE in our PARISH YEAR OF RENEWAL Christ is Risen! He is Risen indeed! Alleluia! Resurrection and new life are prevalent in our Parish at the start of this Eastertide with new ventures and the founding (or re-founding) of groups. See details on page four of this Newsletter. These include the Oratory Media Group (OMG!) of parishioners skilled and experienced in the Web, Facebook, Twitter etc., who’ll be expanding our on-line presence and Sacred Heart TV, and developing our evangelization. The recent start of our Men’s Group goes from strength to strength, meeting regularly on the 3rd Thursday of each month; and the Brothers of the Secular Oratory (a.k.a. as The Little Oratory) has its inaugural meeting on 13th April for men over the age of 18 who want to live their secular lives under the inspiration, and in the spirit of, St Philip Neri, Founder of the Oratory. Ladies are not left out, so let us know if you’d like a Women’s Oratory later in the year. The Oxford Oratory has Children’s Oratory and Teen’s Oratory, but these need to wait to 2019 as everything can’t be done at once, and there’s much else happening meanwhile. After a gap of many years, the SVP (St Vincent de Paul Society) is being re-founded here on 29th April, providing opportunities for everyone to be involved in helping the local poor and needy. You may already be volunteering with Hope for Food (feeding 80-100 homeless rough-sleepers, three times a week, in our Catholic Institute Hall). Reaching out to the local vulnerable and needy, with ecumenical / inter-faith cooperation, will be developing in and beyond our Year of Renewal. The Season of Lent was celebrated well with many Penitents coming to the Confessional, some returning after a long absence, and others coming more regularly (weekly or monthly). Bishop Philip’s Christmas gift book proved popular with those attending the Wednesday Lent Study Groups, and others using it for their personal Lenten reading at home. Numbers at weekday Masses also increased. These good things, which began during Lent, can now continue regularly in our lives, for the renewal and deepening of our relationship with God. We pray for your renewal in holiness, and for the great joy of Christ’s Risen Life this Eastertide. Dear Friends,

EASTERTIDE in our PARISH YEAR OF RENEWAL

Christ is Risen!

MONTHLY PRAYER PAGE for APRIL 2018

SICK AND HOUSEBOUND: Sheila Brook, Brian Coburn, Roy (Christopher) Coombs, Liliana Couch, Bronislawa Konstantin, Elfin Leahy, Tony McCarthy, Mary Moret, Ann Murray, Arlene Nicol, Laurens Obagi, Pat Pope, Pansy Sattur, Alf Skee, Rose Smith, Attracta Spears, Michael Sullivan, John & Hilary Timson, Mary Urwin, Marjorie Walsh and Alan Wright.

We pray for sick and housebound parishioners during Wednesday Eucharistic Adoration. Holy Communion is taken to them weekly by our Extraordinary Ministers. The Fathers visit all the Housebound during Advent and Lent, and at need, for the Sacraments of Confession and Anointing. Please tell the Parish Office of anyone who needs visiting by a priest.

GOING INTO HOSPITAL: If you, a family member, or Catholic friend, are going into hospital, it is important to ensure that the Catholic Chaplain knows you’re there, that your religion is recorded as ‘Catholic’ on your admission papers, and that you ask to be visited by the Catholic Chaplain.

Please also let the Parish Office know that you’re in hospital, so that we can pray for you, and that your own Priests can visit for pastoral care. Political correctness now prevents this, unless we know your ward, date of birth, or address. If you’re not yet registered on the Parish Census, it’s important to do this too. Green census cards are at the back of the church.

APRIL ANNIVERSARIES OF DEATH: 2nd Daniel Cunningham, 3rd Violet Pauline Nunn, 4th Helen Faulkner, 7th Millicent Mary Fordham, 8th Oswald Aurelius Rego, 9th Vivienne Boyd-Lowthin, 10th Monica Mabel Caseley, 11th Marguerite Lilian Wells, Kathleen Burke, John Knight, 13th Peter James Martin, 14th Ralph Paul Lousteau, Donald Thorpe, 15th Joan Rosamund Aitken, 17th Michael Cianchetta, 19th John Leese, Nabil Gabriel Obagi, 20th Maureen Ann Latchford, Winifred Josephine Shackell, Norma Marsh, 22nd Brian John Hannan, Kathleen Margaret Pearce, 23rd Dmytro Bojeczko, 25th Annie Peres, 26th Sheila Molly Lillian KyJak-Lane, 28th Charlotte Niamh Corrigan, 29th Noel Brendan Hamilton, 30th Theresa Mary Kilding.

Please pray especially for all those who have died recently: Jean Kilduff, who died in March. Eternal Rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let Perpetual Light shine upon them. May they Rest in Peace. Amen.

THE FIRST READING AT ALL EASTERTIDE MASSES, from the earliest times, has been always from the Acts of the Apostles - the Church’s first history book - which inspires and encourages us, for our own time, by the heroic witness of the Apostles, and their faithfulness to the Gospel in the face of great opposition.

Saint Philip Neri’s inspiration for the Oratory was the lives of the first Christians (in the Acts of the Apostles), their shared resources, and communal living ‘in the bond of charity’.

St Philip’s instruction to Cardinal Baronius, one of the first Members of the Roman Oratory, to write and preach the history of the Church from the earliest times, drew many others to the Faith ‘once delivered to the Saints’.

It was similarly the witness and teaching of the Apostolic and immediate post-Apostolic Age which led Blessed John Henry Newman, our Cardinal, to recognise the Catholic Church as the inheritor and only authentic successor of the teaching of the Apostles.

Even if you’re not able to be at weekday Masses during Eastertide, do reflect on the daily readings from the Acts of the Apostles throughout these great fifty days.———————————————————————————————————————————

BROTHERS OF THE SECULAR ORATORY(a.k.a. The Little Oratory) starts 13th April.

St Philip Neri's first association was of lay people (the clerical Congregation came later). They met daily in the Oratory where one of the Brothers or Fathers read from Scripture or a spiritual book, followed by a discourse on what they had just heard, or St Philip would ask them to discuss a given topic. The talks were always on prayer, the lives of Saints, the Virtues, or Church history. A period of mental prayer followed, then litanies and ‘the Oratory Prayers’. This pattern is still followed today in Oratories around the world - where there can also be Women’s Oratory and Teens’ Oratory.

Brothers of the Oratory is open to men aged 18 and over, at 6pm on 2nd Fridays, starting on 13th April. Speak to one of the Fathers.

THE LENTEN CHARITY PROJECTS had a great boost by the visit of Neville Kyrke-Smith, National Director of Aid to the Church in Need, by the Second Collections at the end of Sunday Masses throughout Lent, and by the Palm Sunday Lenten Lunch. Thank you to everyone.

Aid to the Church in Need, and Caritas Portsmouth Diocese are both very grateful for our support. If you still have outstanding cash please bring it in a.s.a.p. Final figures will appear in a Sunday Bulletin later this month. We continue to support these two Catholic charities throughout the remainder of this year.
