J. Collins: The changes have been numerous and positive. The im­proved facilities have made it possible to increase the variety and the quality of the experi­ences we can provide in all areas of school life. Our academic pro­gram is stronger than it was sev­eral years ago and our students appear to be more serious about their preparation for secondary school.

The Senior Class dedicates the 1988 BLAZE to Mrs. Rita Dunn Carey. For eleven years, no one has been closer to the Yearbook than Mrs. Carey. Faithful­ly and patiently she worked with the BLAZE staff every year to teach them the elements that make a good yearbook: copy, typography, pictures, layout. She guided them to use their sense of humor constructively, fairly, and with the proper amount of dignity so that they would be proud of the end result that year and in years to come. In the classroom, history became not a chronology of dates and events, but a living record of the actions, successes and failures of previous generations from which we learned to understand today’s world. For those students who joined the Careys’ spring Mediterranean trip, she made the beginnings of Western Civilization come alive. Great was her delight when the Humann Theatre was completed and Performing Arts achieved new stature and prominence at Cardigan. Through her efforts, the school was admitted to the National Junior Honor Society, and high academic achievements have been recognized by induction into this group.For her untiring and many-faceted contributions to the lives of many Cardi­gan students these past eleven years, it is our pleasure to honor Mrs. Carey by

I’m sorry to say that all you peo­ple who love the Fifties have just missed the best oldies play that Cardigan has ever presented. The name of this spectacular perfo- mance was GREASE. There were all kinds of characters in it, rang­ing from the super-cool to the ab­solute nerdly. Like always, the music was a sensation. The songs were all composed in the fifties style despite the fact that the play was written in the 70’s. In the be­ginning of this play you see some greasers who are back for their first day at Rydell High as seniors. The plot folows these five boys and five girls through their last days in high school. All kinds of funny tales take place during their last year. If you have not yet seen this masterpiece you had better hurry to your nearest box office right away. You’re in for a hilari­ous, lively time.

The Cardigan Mountain Chapter of the National Junior Honor Soci­ety which is sponsored by the National Association of Independent Schools was proud to induct six new members into its ranks. Inductees included three members of the Class of ’88 and three members of next year’s senior class. Members are chosen for their qualities of scholar­ship, leadership, character, citizenship, and service. GOODBYE,From the time she first joined the

Cardigan staff in 1945 until she was forced into retirement by a rare lung disorder, Ruth Howe Talbert devoted her time and energy to the school, its students, and its faculty. She served four headmasters as Special Assistant, training them and ensuring the tradi­tions of Cardigan Mountain School lived on. Ruthie was the “Voice of Car­digan” to generations of parents; no one will ever be able to say, “Good morning. Cardigan Mountain School!” in quite the same welcoming way. Ruthie’s files were legend. Whenever you weren’t sure about where to find some item of information, you could always ask Ruthie. If she didn’t know off the top of her head - and most usually she did - she had the answer in a file. She orga­nized special weekends, graduation, travel plans, teachers, and headmas­ters. She kept candy for the faculty children and biscuits for the faculty dogs. Most of all though, she always made time to really get to the students of Cardigan and, when the time came, their children too.

From Baccalaureate to Commencement: The final days

Commencement week began with a Baccalaureate service preceeded by brunch at the Headmaster’s House for L.T. stu­dents. Mid-week saw Janne receive his diploma early during the Recognition assembly. Friday brought many parents on campus to participate in activities with their sons which included sail­ing, tennis and a softball game were one or two of the umpire’s calls were in dispute. The Senior Class honored Mr. Clark, Rick Kahn, Mr. Marrion and Mr. and Mrs. Collins during the ban­quet on Friday evening.

Amid the clicking of shutters and the hum of numerous video cameras this year’s graduates were introduced to the word “neoteny” which means to carry child like behaviors and playfulness into adulthood. There seem s litt le doubt that the Class of ’88 will take this advice to heart.

William Douglas Wendt was presented the Founders Prize as the boy in the student body who has the will to complete any project, regardless of the difficulties encoun­tered, without thought of personal gain, and whose objec­tive is a job well done in the same approach that character­ized the life of Harold P. Hinman, one of the founders of Cardigan Mountain School.

Doug also earned the Senior Prize as the member of the Class of 1987 with the highest academic standing.

The Hinman Prize is given annually in the memory of Mr. and Mrs. Harold P. Hinman to the member of the school who, in the opinion of the faculty, by indus­trious application to his studies, through his attitude on the playing field, and by his behavior and integrity, most nearly approaches the ideals of manhood as con­ceived in the minds of the founders of Cardigan Moun­tain School. This year the Hinman Prize was awarded to James Hubert Schriebl.

The Addison Memorial Prize for Creative Writing was presented to John Phillips Avion for outstanding contributions in the field of poetry.

James Feinen Marrion and Scott Woody Musburger shared the 1987 Caldwell Prize, awarded for outstand­ing athletic achievement and good sportsmanship.

Scott Woody Musburger was award­ed the Pannaci Memorial Award, which is given annually by the Class of 1959 as a memorial to Karl J. Pannaci, to that member of the Senior Class who, in the eyes of his fellow students, has achieved and best attained the ideals of honesty, integrity, leadership, and general social and spiritual adjustment.

James Feinen Marrion was voted to receive the William Knapp Morrison Award, which is given to that student who, in the opinion of the students best exemplifies the spirit of Willie Morri­son in academics, athletics, and as a campus citizen.

lent season, we scored 53 goals. Our regular season record of 5- 5-1 can’t show just how much effort and skill we possessed. Our record included tying the Guilford JV ’s, who were 14-0 at the time. Our record at the Eag- lebrook tournam ent was 5-1-1, we placed third over all.

While Varsity and Reserve teams carried a serious attitude th ro u g h o u t th e season, JV managed a nonchalant, social outlook upon soccer as a sport. Contrary to popular opinion, JV Soccer did have some high points. Believe it or not, JV did win a game, and even tied another!!!

cult season, losing eleven games and winning only one. Fortu­nately, our lone victory came in our final game of the season against Plainfield. At the end of regulation time, the score was 2- 2. In overtime, Gonzalo Car- rancedo curved a beautiful cor­ner kick well out of the reach of the goal tender and into the cage.

unique among the fall sports teams. Everybody makes the Varsity, everybody plays the entire game, and there are no substitutes. It is a sport for both individual and team commit­ment. Hours of running long distances, often up to eight miles, helped to prepare us to be ready to run the relatively short but challenging two-and- a-half to three-mile races.

This season Varsity Basket­ball had a fairly successful sea­son, winning against such com­petitors as K.U.A. and Proctor. We played very well as a team, and enjoyed the experience. Strong defense and hot foul shooting enabled us to win our last game of the season.

JV Basketball enjoyed a win­ning season with a record of 6 and 5. When the team was on, we did very well. For instance, we dematerialized a Mascoma squad 62 - 24. During the season we got a lot of help from Char­lie Heenan and Doug Kooluris.

The A Team started the year off with an intense dry land training program which helped us later when we got on the snow. We ended the season spoiling an 18-year Eaglebrook dominance of slalom in the New E n g lan d P rep School Championships.

The Alpine B Ski Team con­sisted of 9 improving racers who competed in several Lakes Region and Sunday races at Whaleback. We placed third over the Eaglebrook “B” Team on P a r e n t s ’ W eekend and earned another third at Proc­tor. We enjoyed racing both downhill and giant slolam and gained experience each time we competed.

Each Sunday we raced in ei­ther a downhill or a gaint sla­lom. We tested our skills at Whaleback and although we never won any races we had fun and everyone’s skills improved. We are looking forward to ski season next year to face stiffer competition and will try to earn spots on the B Team.

We competed against Eagle- brook four times this season and won two of these races. Most im portant was our 6th place finish out of a field of 12 teams in the Lakes Region Championships. Many of us tried the skating technique this year, but some of us still would rather ski using the classic method. We enjoyed hosting the Lakes Region Relays and participating in a games event at Holderness where skiers and coaches entered such events as a one-ski, one-pole race.

The Orange Pond Adventure began operation this spring and gave the boys a wilderness ex­p e rien ce w ith em p h asis on group dynamics. As a group we spent six weeks cooking our own dinner and living off cam­pus at Clark Pond. Weekends were devoted to campouts and hikes, often through waist-deep snow. It was an experience tha t helped us grow in many ways and will not be forgotten.

This year’s Varsity Lacrosse team had a successful season of 7 wins and 4 losses. We were a young team with several first year players and little experi­ence. W hat gave us the edge in our victories was our hustle, our drive on the field, and our love for the game.

J.V. Lacrosse had an up and down season with a 6-5 record. We lost our first game 9-8 just 13 seconds into overtime. After th a t the season looked bright until the loss of several players handicapped our strength. We improved a lot and learned good fundemental lacrosse.

W ith th irty original players and eleven helmets our early practices were a bit confusing but a shipm ent of helmets two days befo re G ra n d p a re n ts ’ Weekend arrived and we cele­brated with a 6-3 victory over Hanover.

Although we did not do so well as a team, we did very well as individuals considering the fact th a t all the other teams had about four more years ex­perience. Skippers did a fine job handling the main sail and tiller while the crews also per­formed well, working the jib and keeping the boat from cap­sizing. We had a great and fun year.

The season ended with a 4-8 season record. We had a very young team and you might say it was a building season. One of the highlights of the season was our first triple play against C larem ont. The rain forced many practices into the gym and a number of our games took place in the rain as well.

The team displayed a lot of character by coming back to win several games in the last inning instead of giving up. The highlight of our season was our 15 to 3 victory over Eaglebrook in which the whole team played together.

Cycling logged over 210 miles in practice with an additional 95 racing miles. There was also a 57 mile afternoon ride. We competed in road races, criter- iums, and time trials. The 1988 Spring Track Team saved its best for last. We had two New England Jr. Prep School Champions at M ilton on May 21st. Five of the top eleven finishers on the run around the lake were members of the track team, and everyone on the team beat Mr. Wakely despite the fact th a t only four individuals had trained as distance run­ners.

We chose Terry Brooks as School Leader for 1988-89 and we welcomed back an alumnus and Olympic hockey team member Greg Brown to discuss post-Cardigan hockey. The arts saw a professional mime on the Humann stage and then there was the first all-campus photo. B irthday book givers were treated to an ice cream and cake party in the library while in May the entire campus celebrated Assistant Headm aster’s Day with soda, cotton candy, and carnival rides. Headmaster candidates visited the campus and met with students and faculty. Mr. and Mrs. Chip Dewar will be joining us in July of ’89 to succeed the Wakelys. There were also sports, final exams, senior pranks, endless sunny afternoons, and a week of graduation rehearsals and excercises. This was only part of the last eight weeks of the school year.
