Spring brought a flurry of activity to the cam pus. The long-awaited Run Around the Lake was held, and m ost students gave it their all, including Hui N eng Am os who won the event for the third time in his four years at Cardigan. Headm aster's Day was exciting with a carousel on campus and the '87 edition of M rs. Shelton and M r. H art's scavenger hunt. M r. Beard, Danny's dad, lent his beautiful voice to Chapel on Sun­day of Grandparents' Weekend. W e hope to be hearing more of him in the years to come. The final week of school the Investi­ture of next year's student leaders was held. toAs the school year wound down. Seniors began experience their "lasts". Baccalaureate Sunday was gloomy, but it didn't stop the activities. The L.T. Depart­ment hosted the annual Senior Brunch and the final Chapel service was held. Wednesday afternoon athletic teams summed up their seasons and players were award­ed letters. O n Thursday trophies and academic prizes were presented, the Glee Club sang, and the BLAZE was dedicated. Comm encement activities began with the ar­rival of families on Friday when there was a spirited softball game, tennis, and boating activities.

M ay 30, 1987, was billed as the hottest day of the summer. The temperature rose into the high 80's and the Class of '87 was hot to trot. Dr. Wade Davis, noted ethnobiologist and au­thor, spoke to the graduates of becoming indi­viduals. This class was the first in m any years to have all its members receive diplomas. Good work, gentlemen. This class also had more family connections than any other in recent years. The Schmidt brothers - Bruce '82 and David, the Whiteheads - father Bill '59 and his sons Gunnar - SS 81 and Pete. A SILVER LINING FOR WINNERS

Jukka Penttinen was presented the Founders Prize as the boy in the student body who has the will to complete any project, regardless of the difficulties encountered, without thought of personal gain, and whose objective is a job well done in the same approach that characterized the life of Harold P. H inm an, one of the founders of Cardigan M oun­tain School.

David Schmidt earned the Senior Prize as the member of the Class of 1987 with the highest academic standing.

The Hinm an Prize is given annually in the memory of M r. and M rs. Harold P. Hinm an to the member of the school who, in the opinion of the faculty, by industrious application to his studies, through his attitude on the playing field, and by his behavior and integrity, most nearly approaches the ideals of manhood as conceived in the minds of the founders of Cardigan M ountain School. This year the H inm an Prize was awarded to John Hogan.

This fall was filled with m any great surprises and shows. W e were treated to a rousing performance by the Yale sing­ing group. Mixed Company. The students' quick wit and hum or kept us laughing for the whole show. M any return­ing boys also had been looking forward to hearing their new routine and to seeing if any new girls had been added to the group. The talent show was also a welcome break in the pace of our mundane lives. W e were treated to some great acts (and some not-so-great acts), but all in all the talent show was a resounding success. The entertainment ranged from a faculty rendition of the soft shoe to a heated debate on Pig Sympathy.

FALL WEEKEND WAS COLORFUL

Brilliant fall foliage greeted parents who visited this year. Sons demonstrated all that they had learned during the early part of the year. Some played football, others soccer, while still others hung around with their parents. The faculty outdid themselves in being friendly and hospitable, and found time to be entertaining as well. O n M onday m orning we all headed to Sandwich, New Hampshire, for the annual fair. Some people watched the animal judging, while others heard political candidates and musical groups in between the rain showers; but everybody ate - pizza, fried dough, French fries, cotton candy, candied apples, fudge, etc., etc., etc. Then to settle our stomachs we went on a few carnival rides.

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM WAS FAR OUT

Beyond the Classroom was an educational, yet entertaining week for most of the students. W e were treated to a dem onstration by W alter Chestnut of how the trumpet developed and how it sounded at different stages of its life. He concluded with a trumpet voluntary which he had composed especially for Cardigan M ountain School. Another popular aspect of the week was the Egg Drop Contest, sponsored by the Math Department, which appealed to the competative spirit in all of us. After planning, developing, and constructing prototypes, we were ready to let them fly from the top of the ski jump. Comedy Attack provided needed comic relief in the middle of the week, with their hilari­ous routine and amazing acrobatics. The history department asked Mr. and Mrs. Carey to tell of their experiences in serving for two years with the Peace Corps in Turkey. One of the more serious aspects of the week was a deeply per­sonal talk by M s. Ellen Rosenberg focusing on improving our self-image and learning to respect others' feelings.

The Christm as Pageant this year brought out a large crowd to see the well-rehearsed performance. Kirk Peebles did an excellent job as the Modern Shepherd, reciting the story of "the boy on the wrong side of tow n" and teaching us all a lesson on how to treat our fellow man. SENIORS LOOK TO PREP SCHOOL.

At the end of our Eighth Grade year we students began thinking about applying to Senior Prep Schools. After meet­ing with Mr. Hicks, we filled out preference sheets about what sort of schools we wanted to look at. In the fall of our Ninth Grade we searched through school catalogues and directories to find just what we wanted and then we talked to representatives of the different prep schools who visited campus with their slide shows, movies, and sometimes graduates of Cardigan who attend their schools. N ext we visited some of the schools we thought would be best for us and we filled out application forms. Then came the hardest part, writing the essays that went with the forms. W e asked several of our teachers to write recommendations for us. Now we must wait while the schools make their decisions. W e hope we can be accepted at our first choice and we're all anxious as M arch 10 gets closer.

Over one hundred and fifty parents faced frigid weather and trudged through deep snow to participate in a wonderful W inter Weekend this year. W e will never forget Mr. Tom Sullivan's talk.There were sports events for everyone - basketball and wrestling inside and hockey, Alpine, and Nordic skiing outside. The dedication of the Christian Hum ann Theatre on Satur­day afternoon showed the range of events which could be performed there, including those shown here: a juggler, a singing group from Dartmouth, scenes from "T he Secret Life of W alter M itty." Parents' Weekend was an enormous success and was enjoyed by both parents and students.

THURSDAY MEANS CLUBDAY.

Once a week students take a break from their normal activities and attend a club which they choose at the beginning of each term.Some of the m any choices they have are T-shirt designing, magic, conditioning, cabin restoration, walking, canoeing, model rocketry, and the ever- popular acro-bikics club. M r. Carey, the director of clubs, w orks hard to make clubs fun and his effort is appreciated.

Clubs can be colorful, too. The I members of the Blaze work hard each week to produce this publication and often put in extra time on weekends and late afternoons. The ceramics and indoor games clubs provide relaxation and a change of pace. The video club could be found taking photos and or­ganizing them to produce a comedy video as well as some individual pro­jects.

This year. Varsity Soccer closed its season with a 9-5-1 re­cord. On November 8th we trav­elled to Eaglebrook and returned with a 4th overall placing at the New England Junior Prep School Tournament. We com­pleted this year with an amazing 50 goals and a new record by goalkeeper George Needham with 10 shutouts.

Junior Varsity had a season of mixed success which ultimately resulted in a 9-3-1 record. It is enough to say that when we de­cided to use the basics of passing and dribbling that the shooting opened up for us. We also learned that the best soccer is sometimes played in a losing ef­fort.

Reserve B had a slow start this season, as was evident in our 9-1 loss to Eaglebrook. Unfortunate­ly, we had to drop out of the Upper Valley Tournament, one thing we were looking forward to. We finished the season with a win over West Lebanon, 4-2, and a 3-4-1 record.

There were three highlights in our season. These were a 3-2 vic­tory over Eaglebrook from be­hind, a tournament win over Bow, and a late season rout of Canaan. Fortunately, we had a fun and injury-free season.

As always, the Intramurals group had a heavy schedule of flag football scrimmages. We also went canoeing and explored Orange Gorge as well as hiking and swimming. Sometimes we even got the canoes in the water.

This year's Cross Country team had a good season, considering that we raced against high school teams. At our peak in the season, we were able to finish fifth place out of eight teams. We hope that next year the underclassmen will be able to fill the running shoes of our four seniors.

Our first competition was a giant slalom on our home slope, against 6 other schools from the Lakes Region. We won the meet by 13 places, setting a trend for the rest of the season. In the Lakes Region races, we posted a record of 5 firsts, 2 seconds, and 1 third. Even though we domi­nated these races, our biggest thrill was beating the Bird on Parent's Weekend.

After training at a Gould Acade­my ski clinic, the 6 members of Alpine B entered the Lakes Region races with the C team, taking a 4th and 5th place against 8 other teams of Varsity level. We finished up the season with a 1st place at a wild end-of-season race. With this per­formance, we have proven that we will be a very strong team nextyear.

In this, the 5th year of the Car­digan Mountain wrestling pro­gram, the team had its best sea­son yet, doing well in both tournaments and dual meets. Notably, Hank Jones had the only perfect record in 5 years, managing a 22 - 0 record and David Franklin had a record- breaking 21 pins.

The "Going Out for Dinner" team had a fun, if not victorious season. Our tremendous record of 0 and 4 was made possible by racing the senior prep schools at Dublin, Northfield Mt. Her- mon, and Brewster, whose sail­ors had been racing three years or more than any of us; but we had a wonderful time. We were good until we had to race some­one.

It was a season to end all sea­sons. Although quiet in terms of announcements, we were un­beatable on the field. The attack and middies combined for a total of 100 goals to our opposition's 19. The defense staged four shutouts and allowed an average of only 1.7 goals per game, with Brendan in goal.

J.V. Lacrosse came into being because there was a need for a team for ninth graders who were interested in the sport but lacked experience. Our first goal was to learn to catch and throw the ball correctly and to play together as a team, which was sometimes a challenge since we usually had only eight men on the field.

This year Reserve A Lacrosse had a very good season. By the end of the spring we had im­proved significantly and com­bined of new skills and spirit to successfully beat the Bird 9-6, which was the highlight of our season.

Greg Bell's goal with 20 seconds in the game gave us a 7 - 6 win over Kear- sarge and Jesse Hord scored with only 2 seconds left to defeat Eag- lebrook 3-2.

This year's Varsity Tennis team finished 8 and 3. One of the highlights of our season was a close match against Deerfield Academy. Even though we lost 5 - 4, everyone played well and was determined to win. We shar­pened our skill by doing drill activities and we strengthened our competitiveness by playing frequent challenge matches.

Varsity Baseball was a young, inexperienced team with only six Seniors. We had a slow start and both our coaches realized we'd need hard work and an em- phasis on fundamentals. Throughout much of the season we played inconsistent ball; but we managed strong wins over Bow, K.U.A., and Woodstock in the last three games of the year.

Our season was not a victori­ous one, for we had a young and inexperienced team; but good ef­fort, coaching and hitting got us a lot of close games. Our best game of the season was against an older Woodstock team. In the game we pitched, hit and fielded well, and managed to pull off a tie.

CYCLING- 400 MILES FOR PRACTICEWang, Wendt G., Roach, Al­

bert, Reese, Mr. Decker (Coach).The 1987 Cycling season was a

great success with good weather and few mechanical break­downs. Our squad was broken into two skill levels and we rode together daily on rides which av­eraged between 15 and 23 miles. We learned and shared mainte­nance skills,like how to true a wheel and the importance of not completely removing chain riv­ets.

With only eleven players on Reserve Baseball we all got lots of playing time. Our first game was a hard loss - over 20 points - to Hanover; but by the end of the season we had beaten Eagle- brook 29 - 7.

orienteering and created an ori­enteering course which encom­passes the whole campus. Next we practiced rock climbing tech­niques on the ropes course. At the end of the year we learned canoeing strokes and safety pro­cedures. Then we went to the Baker River for an afternoon for some experience with Class 1 rapids.

The Track team had a disap­pointing season on the outside, but if you were to look more deeply, you would see we all im­proved.Three school records were broken this season: the 400 by Santiago Casas, the Triple Jump by Gabe Lee, and the 1500 by both Casas and Lee in a tie. The team achieved its goal of having everyone beat Mr. Wake- ly in the Race Around the Lake.

The newly created Alpine C Team consisted of seven Seniors who started in the Instructional Skiing program and wanted to learn how to race. Not only did we race on Sundays, but we also raced against Applewild, Eagle- brook, and Proctor, as well as in Lakes Region races. In the last race of the season, our team took 2nd place to the B Team with finishes of 3rd, 5th, 8th, and 10th places individually.
