    Preface

Today is 18 Dh ul-h ijjah ,1 th e day wh en the Prophet ()st ayed at Gh adr Kh um after h is ret urn from Hajjat-ul-wad2 to Medina. Surrounded by the Companions (), hedeclared while rai sin g the han d of Alal-Murtad () :

    .

Whoever has me as his master Alish is maste r.

This was the declaration o f Al s spirit ual sovereigntyand it s uncon ditional acceptance is bin din g on believer s

till the Day of Judgement. It clearly proves that anyone

who denies Als spiritual sovereignty in fact denies theProphet s sp ir itual sovereignty. This most h um ble

follower of the Prophet () felt that some people denythis reality partly out of ignorance and partly out of

prejudice, which is spreading unnecessary tension and

disunity in the Muslim community. Under the

circumstances I t hought it necessary to wr ite t wo

pamphlet s on the issue of sovereignty an d leader ship : one

title d as Th e Ghadr Declaration an d the other titled The

Awaited Imm Mahd(). The former is designed to

    1. the twel fth mon th i n the Is l ami c calendar, and the month of

the pilgrimage to Makkah2. the l ast or farewell pi lgrimage of the Prophet Muhammad

() the year (10AH /632A D ) before he left for his eternalhome.

clar ify the stat us of Al() as the opener of the sp ir itualsovereignty and the latter is designed to describe the

st atus of Imm Mahd(), the seal of spiritualsovereignty. The main purpose is to remove the doubts

that have gathered aro un d the issue an d to make the

Muslims aware of the reality. The sp ir itual sovereignty of

Aland Mahd() are proved by the authentichadth-books of Ahl-us-Sunnah wal-Jamah, in the formof contin uo us tr aditions, (that is, the re i s un interrupted

evidence to endorse the soundness of the traditions). In

the f ir st p amphlet I h ave included 51 traditions wh ich are

full authenticated and referenced. The reason for this

n um ber is that this year I h ave completed 51 years of my

life. Therefore, in order to gain blessings I have humbly

used this relationship as waslah (intermediation) in the

presence of Al(), so that this meagre effort isaccepted. ( mn)

In this preface I want to clarify the three types oflegacy (inheritance) handed down by the Holy Prophet

():i. The sp irit ual inheritance of un apparent

    succession (spiritual khilfah ).

ii. The political inh eritan ce of extern al caliph ate.

ii i. The general inheritance of religio us caliph ate.

.The fir st form of inher itance was giv en to themem ber s of the Prophets family .

. The second form of inheritance was given to ther ightly-guided caliph s.

. The third form of inheritance was given to otherCompanion s and the Successor s ().

The unapp arent succession is that founta inhead of

Prophet Muh ammads succession which not on lysafeguarded sp irit ual achievements and hidden blessin gs

of Islam, but also introduced the Ummah to spiritual

sovereignty, sa intly rank ofqutb and reformation thro ugh

wh ich the Ummah benefited sp ir itually.

The external caliphate is that fountainh ead of

Prophet Muhammads succession which led to the

practical domin ance of I slam as well as it s establishment

as a practical system. This lead to governance and

st ability of the Prophet s dn. It paved the way for the

creation of different Islamic states and practically

introduced the sharah o f Prophet Muhammad () as aworld system.

The gen eral caliphate is the fo untainhead of Prophet

Muhammads succession which promoted the Islamic

teachin gs an d proved the importance o f righteous deeds in

the Muslim community. It not only helped in the

preservation of knowledge and piety among the Ummah

but a lso in the spread and propagation of I slamic morality.

The three types of caliphate may be summed up as:

    i. Succession of spiritual sovereignty.ii. Caliph ate of gov ernance.

iii. Caliph ate of guidance.Sh h WalAllh ( ), a great scholar of the

Indian Subcontinent, has commented on this division ofProphet s inh eritance in the fol lo win g wo rds:

    ,

    ,,

    , ,

    ,

    , .

People who have received the Prophets

inheritance are of three kinds: The first

kind is of those who received wisdom, piety

and inner enlightenment from him. These

are the members of his family and other

specific personalities. The second group is

of those who received the inheritance of

externa l enlightenment from him in the

form of virtuousness, and gu idance. Th ese

are his senior Companions, eg the four

caliphs and the ten Companions who

received the great news (of paradise from

the Prophet Muhammad ()). The thirdgroup is of those who received individual

b lessings from h im in the fo rm o f

knowledge and piety. These are the people

who were steeped in the virtue ofh sn

( selflessness), like Anas and Ab Hurayrah

() , and the peop le who camelater. The three forms of inheritance owe

their origin to the finality ofmessengership.1

It may be note d that this division is based on

conv enience an d sp ecial stat us whereas each category of

inher itance shares th e qualities of other inher itances of the

Prophet (). Each c atego ry has, in some sh ape or form,a re lation sh ip with the other.

vIn governance, Ab Bakr as-Siddq ( ) was theimmediate deputy of the Prophet ().

vIn sp ir ituality an d sainthood Alal-Murtad () washis directly appointed deputy.

vIn guidance all of his Companions and Caliphs ()were his immediate deputies.

As a result, after the finality of prophethood, three

horizons were set up in order to facilitate the eternalcontin uity of the Proph ets () blessing:

    i. The first horizon is for the political inher itance ofthe Prophet ().

    1. Shh Wal Al l h, at-Tafh m t -ul- i lhiyyah (2:8).

  • 8/7/2019 The Awaited Imm - Mahd ( ) by Tahir Ul Qadari

    Preface

    5

ii. The second horizon is for the spiritual inheritanceof the Prophet () .

iii. The third horizon is for the educational andpractical inh eritan ce of the Prophet ().

The political inheritance of the Prophet () wasknown as khil fah rshidah (the rightly-guided

    caliphate).

The spiritual inheritance of the Prophet () wasknown as wilyah (spiritual sovereignty) and immah

    (sp irit ual leadership) .

The educational and practical inheritance of theProphet () came to be known as guidance andhonesty.

Therefore, the first recipient of political inheritance

was Ab Bakr as-Siddq (), the first recipient ofspirit ual inh er itance was Alal-Murtad (), an d the f irstr ecip ient s of educational an d practical inher itance were

the Companions (). So all of them were immediatecaliphs (heads of their particular categories). There is no

form of contr adict ion or r ivalry bet ween the three.

The secon d important point to be noted is that the tr ue

st atus of the thr ee dif fer s with regards to var io us issues,

    such as:

    1. External caliphate i s the po lit ical off ice of Islam.

The unapparent caliphate is exclusively aspirit ua l off ice.

    2. Th e external caliphate is an elective an d

    consultative process.

The unapparent caliphate is an inherent and

    se lect ive act.

    3. The external caliph is e lected by the p eople.

The unapparent caliph is selected by God.4. The po liti cal caliph is e lecte d.

The spir itual ca liph is selected.

    5. Th is is the reason that the fir st caliph Ab Bakr as-Siddq () was elected on the basis of Um ar Frq s() p roposal an d the consensus of the majo rity of the

public. But the election of the first Imm of spiritual

sovereignty Alal-Murtad () requir ed neitheranybo dy s proposal nor a con sensus.

    6. Democracy was to be der ived from the caliph ate,

wh ich is why the Proph et () did not anno unce whowil l be the caliph after h im. Spir it ual lea dersh ip was

an act of assignment; therefore, the Prophet ()declared it in the valley of Ghadr Khum.

    7. Th e Prophet () left the election of th e caliph to thewil l of the people , but the spir it ual leader ( wal) was

selected by himself by the will of All h.8. Exte rnal caliphate is established to perfect the

    worldly system.

Spiritual leadership is established to beautify it

with the heavenly ch arm and grace.

    9. Caliphate m akes men just .

Sp ir itual l eadersh ip m akes them p erfect.

    10. Caliphate is conf ined to the floor (earth).

Spiritual leadership extends to the Throne (ofAllh).11. Caliphate is in effective witho ut officia lly tak in g

    office.

Spiritual leadership is effective even without

    takin g office.

    12. Th is is p robably th e reason why caliphate was

entr uste d to the Ummah, andSp ir itual leader sh ip was entr uste d to the fam ily of

    the Prophet ().

Therefore, there is no escaping (room

for the denial of) political leadership

(khilfah ; caliphate) nor of spiritual

    sovereignty (wilyah). The direct caliphate

of Ab Bakr as-Siddq () was establishedwith the consensus of the Companions ()

an d is categorically proven by history. T he

direct sp ir itual sovereignty of Alal-Murtad () was anno unced by the Prophet() himself and is categorically provenby mutawtir (unbroken chain of)

traditions. T he proof of the caliphate is the

consensus of the Companions () and the

proof of sp irit ual sovere ignty ( wilyah) is

the declaration of the Prophet (). Onewho denies the caliphate in fact denies

h istory an d consensus, an d one who den ies

the sp irit ual sov ereignty ( wilyah) denies

    the Prophets declaration. Therefore, both

the caliphate and the spiritual leadership

are inescapable realities. What is ur gently

needed is a clear understanding of the

reality of the t wo in stitut ions in order to

    present conformity rather than difference

(clash) bet ween the t wo .

It should be un derstood that just as the external

caliphate started with the right ly-guide d caliph s an d its

blessin gs were passed on to the r ighteous an d just rulers,

sim ilar ly the unapp arent caliphate ( sp irit ua l sovereignty)st arte d with Alal-Murtad () and it s blessin gs werepassed on to the members of the Prophets family and

perfected saints of the Ummah. By means of the

declaration (whoever has me as hismaster Al is h is master) an d (Alis your sp ir itual leader after me) the Prophet ()publicly declared Al()as the opener of spiritualsovereignty.

Sh h WalAllh () in the chapter ofwilyah says:

.In this Ummah the first person to open

.And there is another way close to

spiritual sovereignty and this is the way ofall categories of saints of all levels. The

path of mysticism (tasawwuf) springs from

this path and it also involves the status of

self-denia l. In termedia tion is p ro ven in this

p rocess because Alal-Murtad() is the

founta inhead of from which the Shaykh s o f

those on this path gain all their blessings.

And this grand office is reserved for him.

On this path, the feet of the Holy Prophet

() a re on Als head whereas F timah,Hassan and Hussein () share this status

with him. I believe that he enjoyed this

position even before his physical birth, as

he did a fte r it. Whosoeve r has received the

d ivin e blessings and guidance on this pa th,

has received it through him, because he is

closest to th e last po in t on th is path and the

centre of this spot belongs to him. And

when Als period ended, the grand office

was passed down to Hassan and Hussein

.() Th en it wa s passed do wnto the twelve Imms in the correct order

one by on e, the la st of whom will be Imm

Mahd(). Whosoever received guidancein their life and after their death, received

it through these saints. These Imms are

ranking saints (such as qut ubs andnujabbecau se they a re th e centre of all sp iritua l

activity) and no one can survive without a

    link with the headquarters.1

Shaykh Ahmad Sarhand() be lieves thatIm m Mahd() will sh are spir it ual sovereignty(wilyah ) with Alal-Murtad ().

The gist of the discussion is that the Prophets

declaration at Ghadr Khum proved forever that Al sspirit ual sovereignty is in fact the Prophet Muh ammads

spirit ual sovereignty. As the door of prophethoo d was

closed after th e Ho ly Prophet () , Al lh () has openednew avenues for the continuation of the Prophets

blessin gs ti ll th e Day of Judgement. Some were blessed by

an external stat us whilst others by an internal status. The

h idden avenue is kno wn as sp irit ual sovereignty and Al

al-Murtad () was its first Imm. Then this chain ofsovereignty was passed do wn to the Prophet s family an df inally to the t welve Imms. Besides the t welv e Immsthere are thousands of other pious individuals who

reach ed the stat us of sainthood. They h ave held high ranks

of sainthood ( such as ghawth, qutub) an d hav e enlightened

the liv es of millions of peop le through the intern al light of

    wil

yah , takin g them o ut of ignoran ce an d astray . Yet allof them gained their spiritual status from the spiritual

sovereignty of Al al-Murtad (), be it directly orindirectly. No one was self-sufficient and independent

from the wilyah of Alal-Murtad ( ) and this chainwil l contin ue up to the Day of Judgement until the

appearance of the last Im m (sp irit ual leader) and the

centre of spiritual leadership. He will be ImmMuhammad Mahd(), the twelfth Im m and the lastcaliph. In his person, the external and the unapparent

caliphates which ran parallel to each other will come

together. He will be the spiritual as well as the political

inher itor, an d h e will be the last person to ho ld the offices

ofkhil fah an d wilyah . Anyone who denies Imm Mah d()will deny both the external and unapparent forms of

    Islam.

This will be the climax of the expo sure and disclosure

of the Prophet Muhammads blessing. This is due to the

fact that, he will be named Muhammad and he will also

resemble the Ho ly Prophet () in moral excellence. Sothe world should know that this Imm is the recipient ofboth the external an d intern al inher itance of the Prophets

blessings. That is why the Prophet () said, Anyonewho den ies Mahdwill be a disbeliever.

At that time, he will be the fo cus of all saints on earth,

and, being the leader of Prophet Muhammads Ummah,

prophet s () will offer his pr ayer beh in d him and inthis way, he will announce his leadership to the whole

    world.

So we should realize that Alal-Murtad () andMahd() o f the e arth an d h eaven s the father an d theson are both Allhs friends and the Prophetsinher itors. It is therefore comp ulsory on ev ery believer to

    acknowledge their exceptional status.

May Allh () give us the ability to gain blessingsfrom these fountainheads ofwilyah . (m n! with the
