Discovered Ming vase will make retired factory worker wealthyIt's the dream of any antique collector:

You impulsively spend a few bucks on

a trinket at an estate sale or an an-

tiques store, and later discover that it's

worth more than what you paid for it.

    Much more.

And that's pretty much the dream that

came true for a 79-year-old British re-

tired worker from the Cadbury choco-

late factory, who recently walked into an

auction house with a near-perfect Ming

    vase in a cardboard box

It's unknown how the man, who wanted

the press to refrain from publishing his

name, came into possession of the rarevase, but staffers at Duke'sthe

    Written by Auction House PR

    WESTHAMPTON, N.Y. As the count-

down continues to Super Bowl XLV,Grey Flannel Auctions has released itsown Super Bowl-related news. In May,the Westhampton, N.Y-based sportsmemorabilia auction house will offer tothe highest bidder the Super Bowl Iplayers ring belonging to former GreenBay Packer Steve Wright.

Under the guidance of legendary coachVince Lombardi, the Packers defeatedthe Kansas City Chiefs on Jan. 15,1967 to take home the first Super Bowl

trophy. Wright played offensive tacklefor the Packers in that landmark game.

The ring to be auctioned in May comesdirectly from Steve Wright and is ac-companied by a letter of authenticity

from Wright himself. It will be offered at

auction with a $10,000 reserve. To ourknowledge, the May sale will mark thefirst time an authentic players ring fromSuper Bowl I has ever come to auc-tion, said Grey Flannel Auctions pres-ident Richard E. Russek.

Dorchester auction house that took it

    inwere astounded by the "spectaclar

    find."

    "When my colleague initially showed

me what had arrived in a cardboard

box I could not believe my eyes," Guy

Schwinge of Duke's told the Guardian.

"The vase is in perfect condition, and it

is amazing to think that it has survived

    unscathed for almost six hundred

    years."

The BBC reported that the vase, whichstands 11.5 inches tall, is the largestever found of a rare group of early Ming"moonflasks" whose production dates

somewhere between the years 1403and 1424.

That means it was manufactured dur-

ing the reign of an emperor named

    Yongle; its distinctive featuressuch

as the small loop handlesappear to

    be influenced by Islamic design.

    Because the vase originates from

China but shows the influence of Mid-

    dle Eastern craftsmanship, auction-

eers at Duke's expect the vase to draw

the bids of wealthy collectors from

both Asian and the Arab worlds.

The auction is scheduled for May, and

the item is expected to fetch at least a

million pounds, or roughly $1.6 million

U.S. dollars.A Ming vase, owned by a retired fac-tory worker is roughly $1.6 million

Vintage Comics & Comic Art Auction atHeritage AuctionsAuction Publicity

The Savannah Collection, a newlydiscovered grouping of more than40,000 comic books, spanning from1958 to the present, and acquired di-

rectly from the distributor, valued intotal at more than $1million roughly$350,000 of which isin this auction makes its debut inHeritage AuctionsFeb. 24-26 Signa-ture VintageComics & Comic Art

    Auction.

    This collection has

already been recog-nized as a pedigreecollection by certifica-tion service CGC,said Ed Jaster, Sen-ior Vice President atHeritage, one of fewcollections from this era to receive thatdesignation.

The collection is particularly notable forcoming replete with significant comicbooks of the silver age, with a particu-

lar emphasis on key DC issues, suchas a CGC-certified 8.0 Showcase #22Green Lantern, estimated at $17,000+.

An Archie Comics #1, CGC 8.5 thehighest-graded copy of the issue, andthe only known copy graded above 7.0

hailing from the Pinnacle Hill col-lection, which produced the 8.0 certi-fied copy of Detective #27 that sold for$1,075,500 in February of 2011, willhave collectors of everybodys favoritecarrot top sitting up to take notice. The

    comic carries a pre-auction estimate of$50,000+.

On virtually the flip side of the comicsspectrum from Archie #1, but no lessvaluable and important, is a rare highgrade copy Fantastic Four #1, CGC8.0, the nicest unrestored copy of theissue that Heritage has offered in fiveyears. This comic, which essentiallystarted the Marvel Age in 1961, carriesa pre-auction estimate of $50,000+.

The Kerby Confer Collection, whichhas held collectors enthralled for thelast two Heritage comics auctions withits amazing depth of original CarlBarks Scrooge McDuck paintings, con-tinues to yield more top

examples of this highly sought-afterDisney artist with Barks July Fourth inDuckburg leading this auction.

This painting, which features thelargest cast of characters that Barks

ever painted, was a onetime record-setter for a piece ofcomic art when itsold for $6,400 in1976, said BarrySandoval , Directorof Comics AuctionsOperations at Her-itage. When itcomes up for bid thistime later in Febru-ary its expected tobring $150,000 ormore. Most peoplewould agree thats apretty good return.

Also from The KerbyConfer Collectioncomes what is easily

one of the most important MickeyMouse items in existence, The BandConcert Animation Cel, thought to bethe only existing production setup fromMickey Mouses first color cartoon, TheBand Concert, made in 1935. It is es-

    timated at $100,000+.

Great original comic art is in large sup-ply in this auction, with several exam-ples from some of the most importantartists, and titles of the 1970s and1980s leading the charge. JohnByrnes original cover art for X-Men#116, 1978 is the first among equals inthese offerings, just the fourth X-Mencover the legendary artist drew for thepopular title, and it is expected to bring$75,000+.

Rounding out the top original art offer-ings, and fresh on the heels of the No-vember 2010 sale of Watchmen Issue#1, Page #1 for $33,460, Heritagepresents four pages of original art fromthe influential series, including a pageof Nite Owl and Rorschach from Page#24, Issue #3 (estimate: $25,000+), astunning page of art featuring Ozy-mandias in his lair from Page #8, Issue#10 (estimate: $20,000+), Nite Owland Silk Spectre from Page #5, Issue
