Why podcast?

• “The future is already here - it is just unevenly distributed.” William Gibson

• Feasibility of podcasting in education has grown with the rollout of mobile devices

• Valuable component of learner-centred blended e-learning materials

Why the artist’s voice podcast?

• Part of the ESAACH research and development team project

• ESAACH - 5,000 Southern African author entries online

• Reclamation scholarship• Author reading his/her own work “pinned” to

each entry as a podcast

ESAACH E-Pack for learners

• Learning “backpacks” linked to authors of prescribed NSC setworks – learning materials for teachers and pupils

• ESAACH E-Packs already prototyped materials such as full texts, images and interactive content like self-test quizzes

• Podcast “proof-of-concept” needed to complete “the pack”

Design considerations

• Length of podcast.• Balance of content between commentary and

author reading.• Relation to the website content.• Choice of standard introductory content for the

series.• Choice of voice “personality” for the introduction.• Selection of authors (This is a critical sub-problem,

but falls outside the scope of this project.)

The Intro-Outro Frame

• Series of podcasts requires standard “Intro-outro” framing

• Example – BBC Podcasts• Standard scripting:

“Welcome to the ESAACH E-pack, your learning backpack in the Encyclopaedia of South African Arts, Culture and Heritage Wiki… “

• Suitable intro narrator voice• Familiar format for returning site users
