Energy Efficiency

NOx emission control The NOx control requirements of Annex VI apply to installed marine diesel engine of over 130 kW output power.

The IMO NOx Tier III controls apply only to the specified ships while operating in Emission Control Areas (ECA) established to limit NOx emissions, outside such areas the Tier II controls apply.

The IMO NOx Tier III requirements take effect in the North American and US Caribbean Emission Control Areas (ECAs) from January 1st 2016 for vessels.

Concluding Remarks

• Green ship technologies are essential to meet the stringent environmental regulations and increase the energy efficiency.

• LNG as fuel becomes a viable solution. – TOTE 3100TEU LNG fueled containership

– Teekay MEGI LNG carrier

– 20K+ TEU Container carriers, etc.

• New energy saving devices will further be developed and being applied to various ship types.

• Northern Sea route will widely utilized soon, e.g. Yamal ARC 7 LNG carrier.

• World’s largest containership (22,000 TEU) will be built by 2020.
