Mission Statement
University College provides first year students with their “roots and wings”: roots that are strengthened and deepened by
strong academic support and wings that allow them to experience academic success, and turn their career dreams into
reality. University College accomplishes this by providing a full array of academic support services: 1) UNIV 1101 and
1102 freshmen seminars connected to learning communities and the Reading the Globe freshman common read, 2)
peer mentoring and academic advising through the Advising and Mentoring Center, 3) tutoring services through the Uni-
versity Learning Center and the Writing Center, 4) student support services through the TRiO grant program, 5) testing
services offered through the Testing Center, and 6) developmental coursework in mathematics, reading, and writing.

Each mentoring session consists of a variety of topic discussions such as time management, exploring UConnect, reviewing degree plans, GPA Calculations, and is tai-lored to each students’ interests and academic concerns throughout their two initial semesters. Our student mentors also provide assistance with campus resource referrals if needed.

Title V: Engaging Sophomores attempts to ease the transition from first year to second year through academic advising and career and personal counseling for TAMIU sophomore stu-dents. Title V also promotes stu-dent success through service learning, tutoring, supplemental instruction, and faculty develop-ment.
The Council for Educational Ex- cellence (CEE) is committed to providing leadership and support aimed at increasing participation and success among all students, pre-kindergarten through college, in postsecondary education and the workforce through effective partnerships with the independent school districts (ISDs), institutions of higher education (IHEs), business, and the community in our service area. This critical work will be undertaken in a spirit of collaboration and mutual interest for improving the quality of education in our communities. To fulfill this mission, the CEE represents key stakehold-ers in education in the South Texas region: Jim Hogg, Maverick, Webb, and Zapata counties. Generation TX is about passionate belief. It’s students, families, friends, and educators who believe that all Texas students belong on the path to education beyond high school. Associate Director: Siobhan Rosales 956-326-2807
