APPLICATION CASE HISTORY: TETRA PAK

THE STEPS IN THE PROCESS ARE:

• Steam sterilize the packaging film. KETRON PEEK-1000

• Form the film into a tube and weld it. FLUOROSINT 207

• Form this tube into a rectangular tube. ERTALYTE TX

• Cut this tube in small pieces and weld one end. CELAZOLE PBI

• Form the package. TECHTRON HPV PPS

• Fill with the beverage and seal the package. TORLON 4203 PAI

KETRON PEEK-1000Supports in sterilisation equipment• These KETRON PEEK-1000 parts are

used in one of the first steps of the package manufacturing process.

• To ensure the purity of the raw material for the packages, it is steam sterilised first.

• These sterilisation cycles have to be monitored with special electronic devices connected to probes.

• Here, KETRON PEEK-1000 plates are used to support and protect the probe and the electronic panel against the steam and chemicals.

FLUOROSINT 207Pressure plates on welding equipmentSmall FLUOROSINT 207 plates (5 x 35 x 96 mm) are used to press the special packaging filmagainst the welding head, ensuring a perfect weld and thus a perfect sealing function of the package.

ERTALYTE TXForming blocksDuring the production process of the typically rectangular shaped packages for milk, tea, orange juice, etc., there is also the main forming operation of the packaging film itself. This is done by two carrousels which have 10 ERTALYTE TX forming blocks each. These blocks are assembled on the outside diameter of the carrousels and they continuously shape the round tube into a rectangular tube.

CELAZOLE PBIThermal insulator / holding block on welding equipmentThis CELAZOLE PBI part holds a metal weldinghead and a steel cutting wire. The welding strip is heated up to 230°C to weld the PE film on the package and the metal wire, at 300°C, is used to finally cut it.

TECHTRON HPV PPSForming blocks on beverage packagingequipmentThese parts are used in the last phase of the packing process to form the package in special shape (prism). They work in contact with paper in a harsh environment (steam, hydrogen peroxide and detergents). The first results were very good: a life time up to three times longer than the formerly used aluminum.

TORLON 4203 PAIHolding blocks for knivesIn this step, a PE strip is welded on the packaging to ensure a good and aseptic closure. At a certain moment, this strip has to be cut on the exact length. This is done with a steelknife which is heated up to 200°C and held in a TORLON 4203 PAI sliding / holding block.

INITIATIVES IN INDIA

• Project SEARCH aims to create 'Green

Agents of Change' by talking to

students and instilling in them a strong

sense of environmental responsibility.

• From June 2009 to February 2010,

SEARCH reached out to 60 schools in

Delhi NCR and Bangalore. Competitions

and school activities helped students

become a part of the SEARCH project

and gave them a chance to become

Tetra Pak ambassadors.

OBJECTIVES OF PROJECT SEARCH

• To raise awareness amongst school students on

environment in general and recycling in specific.

• To instill good waste management practices in

children and inculcate the habit of recycling.

• To educate students on nutritional benefits of carton

packaging of beverages.

• To help Tetra Pak set-up collection centers in schools

for recycling of used Tetra Pak cartons.
