Salgótarján is a young town founded in 1922 in uniform, modern style. As a miners’ settlement, it can boast with Hungary’s rst natural underground museum, the Mining Museum, presenting the past and the technical relics of the coal basin of Nógrád County. The original tunnel system of the former József incline pit, situated in the centre of town, was declared an industrial monument. The town is uniquely situated, as this is the meeting point of the Karancs group of volcanic hills and the Medves and Mátra, which are also volcanic. The peaks used to attract castle builders of the past centu-ries. The Castle of Salgó is situated near the town; it is worth

climbing the steep hillside for the breathtaking views. The Castle of Somoskő lies exactly on the borderline between Hungary and Slovakia. The basalt palisade of European fame can be visited north of the castle, in the neighbouring country, where the basalt ‘pouring down’ from a height of almost 500 metres is organised in columns like organ pipes. The largest basalt plateau of Central Europe is the Medves Plateau. Walking on the top feels like staying on a plain, while hikers can observe the vegetation of several di erent climate zones in one place. Bird life is also extremely rich here. This place is excellent for photography trips.

Szécsény is worth visiting for the beautifully preserved and renovated Forgách Palace in the area of the one-time castle that forms the historical town centre. The building, constructed in rural Baroque style, houses a museum and its park is a nature reserve area. You do not necessarily have to go to Pisa, Italy to see a leaning tower. The Fire Tower, the symbol of the town, is spectacularly leaning due to a slid-ing clay-bed. And do not forget the remnants of the former castle or the Franciscan church while in town.

Balassagyarmat is the capital of Palots country, famous for the valuable and special folk art and costume of the Palots ethnic group. This is presented in the Palots Mu-seum with an open-air museum in its park. Their collection encompasses the entire peasant culture of Nógrád County.

The most beautiful building in town is the former county hall built in Classicist style. The orthodox Jewish cemetery with its three thousand tombstones was the rst of its kind to be put under protection in

the country.

Page 22: Természetesen (ENG)

The most e ectively preserved Palots village, Hollókő, is one of the UNESCO world heritage sites. The 58 protected buildings of the old village—and the small church they embrace—make one feel in the past. However, one of the specialities of the village is that some people still live in this part of the settlement. The rest of the buildings are used to present the traditional activities: pottery, weaving, basketry and the rich folk costumes so characteristic of the region. Visitors can taste traditional dishes prepared in old-style ovens in some of the old houses. Guests to the village are entertained by the games in the castle raised above the village.

Have you ever taken a walk on the bottom of a tropical sea in the heart of Europe? If you are ready for the adventure, you will have to visit Ipolytarnóc. The ora and fauna of the ancient

sea was preserved for the present by a volcano explosion 20 million years ago. The directorate of Bükk National Park has set up a unique educational trail in a beautiful scene that is

also called the Palots Pompeii. You can nd yourself in the uniquely rich habitat of the prehistoric world on the 800-metre path. While following the trail, you

can spot numerous footprints of di erent fossil animals, shark teeth, petri ed trees and fossils of leaves. The famous sights include the

petri ed pieces of a 20 million-year-old ancient pine tree that used to be 46 metres high and 1.2 metres wide. The Fossil Nature Reserve Area has been declared part of the Pan-European Natural Heritage and awarded the European Diploma; the site is presently

listed as a candidate for the World Heritage title.

Page 24: Természetesen (ENG)

Kazár o ers the most beautiful rural houses with hipped saddle-back roofs and the most colourful folk costumes in Palots country. Near the settlement, there is a unique volcanic formation in the area of approximately one hectare. This amazing natural sight is due to the several-million-year-old rhyolite tu erosion, which gives the impression of walking on the moon.

Visitors can get to know the beauties of rural life in Kozárd. Travellers are awaited with the green valley, the hillsides covered with juniper bushes, peach and cherry orchards, apple groves and the pig-farms of the unique Hungarian variation, Mangalica, as well as with the preserved relics of peasant life and the delicacies of the Palots cuisine.

Lovers of literature should visit Horpács, where the memorial house of Kálmán Mikszáth, the famous Hungarian writer, preserve the original furniture, objects and his personal relics; or Csesztvér, the mansion of Imre Madách, a well-known Hungarian writer of the 19th century.

Bercel is the village of castles and mansions. Typical and indigenous animals such as ‘cigája’ sheep, goats, bu aloes, horses and donkeys live on a model farm within the boundaries of the settlement.

The beautifully restored castle in Szirák houses a four-star hotel.

The surroundings of Gyöngyös have been inhabited since ancient times. The civilisation has created several relics in the small town situated in a valley surrounded by the slopes of the Mátra, deservedly admired by travellers. The town was burnt down several times during its history, yet it always rose again like a phoenix from its ashes. Even so, Gyöngyös o ers signi -cant and attractive sights of almost every historic period. The town dwellers are reminded of the destroying ames, the ‘red rooster’, by a statue in the town centre.

The atmosphere of the town preserves no signs of the sad events of the past. This town at the foot of the Mátra Hills lures its visitors mainly with its main square of Mediterranean ambience, renovated a few years ago.

An outstanding building of the town centre is the Baroque style Saint Bartholomew Church. Its treasury hides Renaissance liturgical objects of great value. The town’s other valuable monuments include the Franciscan church and monastery founded in the 1370’s, with the legendary General János ‘Blind’ Bottyán of the Rákóczi Freedom Fight buried in its crypt. The monastery houses the only church library in the country that has continuously

been operating since the Middle Ages and its 14,000 volumes include 200 incunabula. The stone lions guarding the Orczy Castle are regarded as the symbols of Gyöngyös. The castle

building, home to the Mátra Museum, has been refurbished fully into its original state; its recently

discovered frescos were restored and an enhanced modern museum was set up.

Do you prefer aromatic, fruity white wines with

ne acid contents? You are in the right place, Dear Traveller, as this land, the Mátra Winemaking Region is the home of white wines. The inhabitants of the mountain-skirted settlement dealt with grape growing as early as the rst decades after the Hungarian Conquest. The southern slopes of the volcanic Mátra Hills provided ideal circum-stances for the formation of the largest historical winemak-ing region of the area. This is how Gyöngyös became the town of grapes and wine. Visitors can taste the aromatic nectars in the Farkasmály cellar row near the town, in the Nagyréde cellarage, the protected Heller cellar of Gyöngyös-tarján, which is the longest straight cellar in all Central Europe with its length of 542 metres, as well as in the Szőke Mátyás cellar and the wine houses carved in the tu in Gyöngyöspata. Do not miss the food, either, as excellent desserts can be prepared using late harvested white wine, such as grape pudding with Muscat custard.

Nearby Gyöngyöspata can boast with a Jesse-wood organ, unique in all Europe. The same church houses the copy of the Nekcse Bible, the original of which is kept in the Congress Library in Washington. The Mátra is the emblematic mountain range of Hun-gary as this is where the highest point of the country, the 1014-meter high Kékes soars. Right next to this peak, we can nd the second highest point, Galyatető. This area is also a climatic medicinal resort, thanks to the crystal clear air. Apart from all these attractions, there are many other reasons to visit this thousand-faced hill; in summer, it is the picturesque valleys and the dense forests of the hilltops; in

autumn, the mysterious, foggy peaks; and in winter, it is the opportunity to ski in the sparkling sunshine that attracts visitors. With its well-signed tourist paths, the Mátra is also a paradise for hikers and trekkers. Two modern ski centres have opened on the slopes of the Mátra in the past few years, in Kékestető and Mátraszentimre, while Galyatető o ers a cross-country ski track suitable for international events. The hill is also the favoured destination of cyclists; it is the venue of several national and international cycling competitions. The cli s of Csókakő and Báránykő are well known among rock-climbers, o ering outstanding opportunities to learn climbing. We can also reach the hills taking the romantic forest train from Gyöngyös. Hungary’s longest bobsled track at 930 metres is located in the stone-quarry of Sástó. There is also an exciting adventure park here, complete with ropeways and suspension bridges. If you are looking for the highest situated lake in Hungary, you have to visit Sástó again, where shing and rowing are o ered besides hiking. This is where you can nd the highest situated villages in the country: Mátraszentlászló, Mátraszentimre and Mát-raszentistván; the latter village also has an astronomical observatory. The attached village of Fallóskút is a popular pilgrimage destination and the villages o er the specialities of Slovak gastronomy, strapachka, cabbage bean soup and other delicacies.

Parádsasvár is famous for the beautiful, romantic Károlyi hunting castle, which today houses a ve-star castle hotel. This is where the famed mineral water of Parád rises with sulphuric acid content, which has been drunk for centu-ries to ease the symptoms of di erent stomach diseases. Glass manufacturing also has long traditions, Ferenc Rákóczi II founded the rst glassworks in the region.

In Mátraderecske, natural Carbon-dioxide gas leaks from the fault-line of the earth’s crust, which

has been ‘tamed’ to cure illnesses. This is where the only

natural Carbon-dioxide dry bath of the country, a mofette operates, where patients suffering from

vascular and locomotor diseases are treated.

Legend has it that King Saint László miraculously escaped from

his Cumanian chasers in 1092 by jumping over a precipice with riding his horse in the forest of Cserhát near Mátraverebély. To-day’s Saint Well started from the

hoof-print of the king’s horse. The Blessed Virgin had her first appearance here in

the 1100s and she cured a dumb shepherd boy with the water of the Holy Well started by Saint László. This was when the flood of pilgrims started to visit the village, which is today the most popular pilgrimage destination in Hungary.Besides, the area is also the popular hunting ground for mineral collectors as there are special crystals, amethysts and antimony crystals.

A uniquely positioned ruined castle rises above the village of Sirok, where a small museum and sum-mer castle games attract visitors. Starting from the northern slopes of the Mátra, following the Palots way, we can visit 30 settlements and learn about the living traditions of the local people. Visitors are wel-come by relics of folk architecture, artisan workshops, food specialities and sincere hospitality.Verpelét, Markaz, Abasár and Kisnána are worth visit-ing to taste the excellent local wines. The ruins of the castle in Kisnána house colourful castle games and gastronomy programs in each summer.

It is worth visiting the coach museum in the Cifra Stable in Parádfürdő.

Pásztó is the western gate of the Mátra Hills, therefore it is a popular starting point of hiking trips. Before we set o into the midst of the forests, we can visit the reservoir in Hasznos with our shing equipment or rise in the heights on a hang-glider. Then we can marvel at the nice old buildings in the lovely small town, the 12th century parish church, the Cistercian monastery and the park with ancient ruins. The Schoolmaster’s House, the only remaining market-town house built from natural rolled creek stone, is also located here. The glass-works from the 12th century is a European rarity.Hatvan, the town situated on the banks of the river Zagyva, is a settlement that has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. Several of the architectural sights of the town visible today have ties with the once wealthiest landlords of the region, the Grassalkovich family, such as the Baroque

farm buildings and the Grassalkovich Castle erected be-tween 1754 and 1763, the park of which is a natural asset. The town’s most glorious months are related to the events of 1848/49. The Hungarian liberty ghter army fought its rst victorious battle near the town against the Austrians in the Spring Campaign.Boldog is one of the villages that preserve their tra-ditions with utmost enthusiasm. The rst pattern book of the embroideries of Boldog was published in 1942; it also included the white embroidery of Boldog. We can admire Boldog folk costumes ‘live’ at the Heart of Jesus Fête in June, attracting numerous visitors. Several ensembles have been formed to keep the old customs and song alive. The town is famous for its tasty melons and paprika. In autumn, the burning red strings of pepper hanging on the verandas of whitewashed peasant houses provide a special sight.

A jewel case: this is how its visitors often call Eger. It is not a coincidence that the town has been one of the most frequently visited tourist destinations in the country for years. For those who do not know this his-torical town in the north-eastern region, let us explain that although it has been the venue for many important events during the centuries, it symbolises one thing for most Hungarians: heroic resistance, perseverance and patriotism, values that István Dobó, commander, and the defenders of the Castle of Eger demonstrated during the Turkish siege in 1552. Two thousand soldiers and town dwellers protected the fortress successfully for 38 days against the Turkish conqueror army of eighty thou-sand, securing a glorious victory. Their achievement is written in the historic annals with golden letters.Due to their heroism and also to the novel ‘Eclipse of the Crescent Moon’ written by Géza Gárdonyi, this castle

and its exhibitions receive the largest number of visitors among all the museums outside the capital. Every sum-mer, members of the Association for Preserving Military Traditions re-enact the life of medieval soldiers, the siege and contemporary battles in colourful historical games. In 1596, the Turks seized the castle and later on the town itself. In memory of the siege and the nearly 150 years of Turkish presence in Hungary, stands the 40-meter high Minaret, the most northern example of Turkish architecture in Europe. It is also the Turks who the town ‘inherited’ its sophisticated spa culture from, represented by the Turkish Bath of an unrivalled atmos-phere—to be re-opened to visitors during the first half of 2009 after renovation and extension—and the town’s outdoor medicinal pools. The medicinal water of the baths contains radon and is excellent to treat loco-motor diseases.

Tourists can take romantic walks in the nooks and crannies of the Baroque town centre lying below the castle. The town’s main square, the Dobó Square is dominated by one of Europe’s most beautiful Baroque churches, the Minorites’ church. The ne, harmonious building of the former secondary school, presently a college, boasts with its own observatory tower, where visitors can see the only operating camera obscura in Europe. Experiments in natural sciences may also be conducted in the Magic Tower, and interesting experiences may be gained in its planetary. The ‘Zopf’ style building is decorated with valuable frescoes. Beside all the age-old codices, the Archdiocesan Library also guards the very rst printed book of Hungary, the Buda Chronicle from 1473. The second largest church in Hungary is located across the lyceum; it is the classicist ba-silica with organs that make a marvellous sound. The town also has a Greek Orthodox church which is a mu-seum today and houses a majestic iconostasis. Eger is also the centre of a fty thousand hectare winegrowing region, the producer of one of Hungary’s best-known wines, Bull’s Blood of Eger. Almost everything is about wine in the town as the cultivation of grapes started back in the 11th century. Even though the Turkish were not

allowed to drink alcohol, the culture of winemaking did not decline even under their rule. The making of wine is a centuries old tradition for many a family in Eger, a trade they practice beside their regular occupation. Are you hungry and thirsty, dear Trav-eller? In that case, you should not miss the ne taverns town, the restaurants o ering dishes prepared with the local wine and, of course, the numerous cellars surrounding the town, including those in the Szépasszony (Beautiful Lady) Valley. The ery deep ruby red cuvee, the Bull’s Blood of Eger is the ‘ agship’ of this wine region, in addition to which the luscious white wine Egri Leányka (Young Girl of Eger) and lymph of more recent grape species are becoming increas-ingly renowned. The winemakers of Eger are also famous since three of them were awarded the title of the ‘Wine Pro-ducer of the Year’ in recent years: Vilmos Thummerer, Tibor Gál (†) and Béla Vincze. Such worthy members of the trade also represent the new generation of winemakers producing wines by combining traditional techniques and state-of-the-art technology. This has led them to receive medals at major global wine competitions year after year and this is why a visit should be paid to these wineries and to taste the juices of the hills right on the spot of production.

Page 52: Természetesen (ENG)

The town hosts a multitude of events to attract tourists: there are programmes built on the historic and winemaking traditions, as well as cultural and musical events. The largest conference hall of the region was also built here. There are many attractions in the vicinity of Eger as well for travellers to visit. The neighbourhood of Eger is an anglers’ paradise, too, it is worth visiting the reservoirs in Egerszalók and Ostoros or the lake in Bélapátfalva, equipped with a shing rod. The Eged Hill situated near the town is the ideal take-o point for paragliders, while sports planes start their journeys from the air elds of Eged Hill and Maklár.

Egerszalók has become famous for its thermal water. 68°C hot, uniquely composed min-eral water emerges from the depth of nearly 400 metres, the salt formations of which has created formations resembling the surface of the moon. Similar formations can only be

seen in Turkey and the USA. A health spa of European stand-ards was erected on the hot well since its medicinal waters are excellent for rheumatic diseases and post-operational rehabilitation. A ve-star health hostel attached to the spa will also be completed before long.

Inhabitants of Noszvaj faithfully preserve the relics of traditional rural life: they bake

bread in the oven and prepare the tradi-tional plum jam in cauldrons; therefore

the village is a popular destination of rural tourism.

The harmonic building of the Baroque De la Motte Castle is an impres-

sive sight, adjoined by a lovely garden. The settlement is regarded as one of the most beautiful villages in Hungary; it was awarded the rst prize in the village category in the movement of owery settlements in 2006.

Szilvásvárad is one of the most favoured resort centres in the country as the Szalajka Valley is packed with natural beauties. You can visit the Fátyol (Veil) Waterfall, the Open-Air Forest Museum, the trout lakes, the protected ancient birch wood and the Istállós-kő Cave of prehistoric man as a hiker on foot, but it is also possible to get on a forest train or travel by horse-cart or on horseback or horse-sleigh in win-ter. Hikers are directed by signed tourist trails and cyclists can navigate with the help of posted maps. Gastronomy’s ‘black gold’, tru e grows in the neighbouring forests. Autumn is the season of tru e hunting, where mushroom tracing dogs

play the main role. The restaurants o er delicious dishes prepared with tru e and you can also choose from trout specialities. The town boasts with one of the most beautiful horse-riding courses in the country, as well as the only Lipiz-zaner stud-farm with its valuable gene pool.

Neighbouring Szomolya is famous for the crispy black cherry variety, unmatched in the country and the various dishes prepared using the fruit. Every spring, a Cherry Fes-tival is organised. A few beautiful specimens of so-called hive-stones—typical of the southern part of the Bükk Hills—are found near the village.

Felsőtárkány is the western gate of the Bükk National Park with its Informational and Visitor Centre hosting an exhibition of the fauna and ora of the Bükk. A romantic forest train takes visitors from the village to the forest. Walk-ing along the educational forest trails near the village, you can familiarise yourself with the rich ora and fauna of the hill. Horse-riders and cyclists can also nd excellent forest routes for their activities. Taking long hikes, you can become part of a secluded world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, where quiet and birdsongs dominate. The local forests are rich in wild animals; roes, deer, boars, mouf- ons and foxes are often brought down, therefore the area is frequented by hunters, too.

Bélapátfalva lies at the gate of Western Bükk, at the western foot of Bélkő Hill. Whether it is spring or winter, summer or autumn, nature always turns its most beautiful face towards the visitor. Several hiking and biking routes—including the Bélkő educational trail—await tourists on foot and by bike within the area. The white cli s of the hill emerged from the receding prehistoric seas 100 million years ago. A winding road leads up to the top of the hill, from where you can enjoy breathtaking views. In the depths of the valley, lies the Cistercian Abbey founded in 1232, the cross-shaped Roman temple of which survives until the present day with its undercroft.

Page 54: Természetesen (ENG)

Mikófalva, this tiny settlement at the foot of the Bükk Hills, invites visitors to take part in the Mikófalva Palots Wedding Programme, based on the collection of Palots traditions, attracting domestic and foreign tourists every summer.

Bükkszék is frequented by visitors for its medicinal water. The 30-40°C water emerging here was discovered in the 1930’s, looking for hydrocarbons, and the rst bath was established back then. The water of the famous medicinal bath is bottled under the name ‘Salvus’. This can e ectively lessen the symptoms of various diseases, including stomach problems, diabetes and respiratory diseases.Feldebrő is famous for its church, unmatched in all Europe. Under the church building that contains Romanesque elements, we can nd one of the oldest, totally intact undercrofts in the country. The vaults of the undercroft are decorated with frescoes depicting the fratricide (the story of Cain and Abel) and Christ with the four evangelists.

Cserépfalu is situated in the most beautiful valley of the Bükk Hills, the Hór Valley, which is a great hiking destination. The nearest attraction is the Suba Cave, where archaeologists found the traces of prehistoric men that belonged to the Neanderthal culture.

Mezőkövesd is the capital of Matyó Land where the locals wear the ‘most gaudy’ Hungarian national dresses; the girls and women of Mezőkövesd used to embroider large owers, roses, marguerites, tulips, bonnets, carnations and lilies of the valley on their dresses, which cannot be seen elsewhere in Hungary. The Matyó Museum o ers an insight into such colourful dresses. Pools are lled with sulphuric medicinal waters in the Zsóry Spa; thermal waters rich in minerals o er healing to those su ering from arthritic or spinal diseases and are excellent for improving the circula-tion of limps and for post-treatment of orthopaedic opera-tions. The landscape houses and folklore programmes of the two other Matyó settlements, Tard and Szentistván reveal Matyó dresses and embroideries di erent from the ones in Mezőkövesd.

In the nearby village of Bogács, the spa was built on medicinal waters of similar composition, which is also vis-ited by many of those seeking relaxation. Guests are o ered pleasant wines in the cellars of this resort village, and its ponds are excellent shing sites. One may even marvel at tropical butter ies in the rst butter y museum of Hungary.

Page 81: Természetesen (ENG)

It is the third largest city in Hungary and the longest popu-lated settlement at the same time, as man has been present on the Avas Hill rising above the city centre for around 70 thousand years. The Castle of Diósgyőr is one of the oldest and most signi cant sights in Miskolc; its history goes back several centuries and it continues to live together with the city. The Renaissance castle used to be the engagement

present for queens and the execution place of witches at one time; its walls witnessed more lyre music and festivities than typical military life. This atmosphere is revived each summer by the medieval castle days remembering the age of King Louis the Great, where visitors can take part in a special time travel, pay medieval denarius coins and have a look at the most populous historic wax museum in Central Europe.

The Szinva Creek runs through the downtown, which offers a magical atmosphere to its squares and terraces. The city hides numerous historical and cultural values. Highlights include the Herman Ottó Museum that displays Hungary’s largest collection of minerals; the Calvinist Church in Avas Hill is the most significant late-Gothic monument of the country. The 16-metre high iconostasis of the Greek Orthodox Church is Hun-gary’s most beautiful and Central Europe’s largest mural wall; while the Wooden Church constructed of pure lumber is a true rarity. The region’s largest functioning synagogue offers Hungary’s most beauti-ful interior. The Gallery of Miskolc is proud to claim the richest provincial collection of Hungarian painters. The first stone theatre of the country acting in Hungarian language was also opened in Miskolc in 1823 and hosts the region’s most important musical event, the ‘Bar-tók+…’ International Opera Festival celebrated every year. The Laser Point Spectacle Collection is a unique exhibition in Miskolc’s cultural tourism. Travellers may be part of a spectacle offering the largest available col-lection of dresses within the Carpathian Basin, the crafts

of our grandfathers slowly fading, the peculiar object culture of the 1950’s and the often mysterious world of optics history.Have you ever had a bath in a cave? This can become reality in Miskolctapolca. The Cave Spa offers a unique experience. The waters and cave air of the spa complex are renowned all over Europe and have a beneficial impact on heart diseases, locomotor and respiratory complaints. Miskolctapolca offers a chance for testing Northern Hungary’s largest adventure park—set up within a natural environment—and the most exciting year-round bobsled track in Hungary! Visitors may see several hundreds of animal species in the Zoo and Culture Park established near the city, such as Central Europe’s largest pack of wolves. Subject to weather conditions, visitors can meet animals and watch them at feeding time; different animal dem-onstrations take place there, and one can even touch the animals if they want. The arboretum in Avas Hill hosts the richest coniferous collection of Hungary. One thing is sure: Miskolc welcomes you with open gates, dear Traveller!

Miskolc is surrounded by the Bükk Hills and it plays an im-portant role in the life of the city and its neighbourhood. If all you need is a pleasant, cool walk in the forest, you can nd yourself among the trees as you leave the borders of the city. The Directorate of the Bükk National Park has set up several educational trails on the Bükk Plateau present-ing the fauna and ora of the hills and interesting terrain forms. Nearby Lillafüred is a famous mountain resort centre, where you can row a boat on the deep green water of Lake Hámori. The beautiful building of the Palace Hotel was erected on the hillside, following the ex-ample of the hunting castles of King Mathias’ age. The Hostel’s hanging garden awaits guests for a walk o ering a splendid view of the surroundings, including the wa-terfalls of the Szinva Creek, which is a wonderful natural spectacle and part of Lillafüred’s atmosphere. The cli faces of Felsőhámor attract most of the rock climbers of the region and those who are good enough at conquering the rock surface can try to tackle the ice wall that is formed in winter. The taste of smoked sh prepared at the trout farm in Garadna is unmatched. The indigenous swift trout, also protected as a gene pool, is bred in 18 pools utilising the water of the Margit Spring. Trout shing is worth a try in the mountain creek straggling between the bold rock walls of the Garadna Valley. Another pleasant program is to approach the valley taking the forest train

that has been in function for almost 80 years. The cars of the forest train commute all year around presenting the ever-appealing ascents of the Bükk to our eyes. The hills are also a fascinating region of Hungary, rich in caves. Lillafüred’s St. Stephen Cave became famous for its dripstones, while it is also a climatic healing place with a chamber closed for visitors o ering breathing therapy treatment. The Anna Cave attracts curious travellers with its calc-tu s forms remarkable on a European scale. The rst traces of cavemen were found in the Szeleta Cave accommodating several protected bat species in its 90-metre track placed under special protection. Those fond of active leisure time should visit the Bükk Hills, which are a paradise for mountain-bikers and hikers in summer and o er well-kept and night-lit ski tracks in Bánkút to the lovers of winter sports from the rst snow-fall.

In Bükkszentkereszt, you can visit the only herb-collector in the country, ‘Uncle Gyuri’, and you can even share a trip with him, collecting herbs. The resort village is famous for its crystal clear air, its horse farm and the exhibition presenting the former glassworks.

According to archaeological findings, Muhi and its neighbourhood was continuously inhabited from the Stone Age to the era of the Scythians. The village is fa-mous for the battle in which the armies of King Béla IV and Batu Khan fought in 1241, ending with the victory of the Mongolian army. A memorial park was created on the battlefield.

As a result of mining, 750 hectares of water surface have been created on the lakes near the town of Nyék-ládháza, which today offer excellent opportunities for lovers of water sports and for anglers.

Some of the streets of the town of Ónod still preserve their medieval layout. The ruins of the medieval castle are surrounded by the visible remnants of the former moat, and the castle itself is a beautiful sight by the curve of the River Sajó. The castle gained historic significance during the Rákóczi War of Independence, when it was one of the headquarters of Ferenc Rákóczi II. It was at the National Assembly held on the Köröm field near the castle where the dethronement of the Habsburg dynasty was announced. The memorial statue erected in 1907 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Ónod As-sembly stands in front of the Reformed Church.

This is where you can set off to explore the largest dripstone cave system in Europe, which is probably one of the most famous caves in the world, due to the un-matched variety of colourful stalactites and stalagmites. 700 smaller and larger caves evolved 220 million years ago lie beneath Aggtelek, some of which even extend to Slovakia. The most spectacular and longest cave of the area is the 24-kilometre Baradla-Domica cave system, which receives the most visitors with various creative dripstone forms and vast chambers of excellent acoustics frequently hosting concerts of noted national and international artists. Various guided tours are avail-

able in the cave, the longest adventure being nine kilometres and taking five hours. Another member of the system, the Béke Cave is famous for its unique climate; patients suffering from respiratory diseases are treated here. It is no wonder that the cave system is a World Heritage site.Several days are worthy of wandering on the surface as well because the Directorate of the Aggtelek Na-tional Park encourages visitors with a number of tourist programmes. You can take marvellous hiking trips in the hills following the signed hiking trails or educa-tional trails. The forest can also be explored on horseback.

Page 98: Természetesen (ENG)

Hungary’s single Hucul herd preserved as a gene stock can also be found in Jósvafő, where horses grazing freely may be visited and even ridden on the pasture. Organised walking trips can be taken in the old village visiting the me-dieval church and the wooden tombstone of the cemetery. The Kessler Hubert Memorial House and Landscape House

is a must see for guests interested in culture and history, as well as folk handicrafts. The area is an excellent destination for photo excursions and bird watching.Visitors can take walks among age-old peasant houses in beautifully set tiny villages, so it is worth visiting Tornaká-polna, Teresztenye and Égerszög.

Rudabánya is the oldest mining settlement in the country; besides, it is famous for Rudapitecus Hungaricus, the primate which lived in the area around 8 to 10 million years ago.

The town of Edelény has the sixth largest palace in the country with 106 rooms, built in the early 1700’s, which used to be the home of Ferenc János L’Huillier, a rich commander regiment.

We recommend the hilly area of the Cserehát, situated between the Bükk and Zemplén hills,

for those who prefer untouched nature and nomad cir-cumstances. You can put your boat on the water of the

Hernád River at Novajidrány and start exploring the internationally renowned water tour

route. There is relatively little tra c between the small vil-

lages; therefore the region is perfectly suitable for cycling

trips. Desperate trekkers can walk the 111-kilometre-long

tourist path called ‘The Hiker of the Cserehát’.

This is where you can find the tiniest settlement in the country, Szanticska, unsigned on many maps. In addition to its few permanent residents, many peasant houses are for rent and await tourists who can also take part in contemporary folk occupations such as pottery, wood carving, bread-baking, weaving and smith craft.

Irota is worth the stop for its Greek Church, while Felsőgagy has a fine Baroque Catholic church and a Classicistic mansion.

Hungary’s largest mountain water reservoir, the Rakaca Pond is a fishermen’s paradise. Cserehát is a renowned and favourite area for hunters, where several hunting houses welcome the lovers of hunting.

The Tokaj Region and the Zemplén Hills

It is not only today’s traveller who wishes to take a visit to Tokaj, the town that lent its name to the winegrow-ing region. This town received numerous visitors as early as the 18th century, wishing to see where the world-famous wine was made. It is needless to waste too many words on the noble nectars of Tokaj, as everybody knows the honey sweet Aszú, prepared using several butts of dried grapes, the unique Szamorodni, the aromatic Fur-mint and the Yellow Muscat. It is still not yet clear what gives wines such unrivalled flavour in this region. Accord-ing to the experts, the fortunate coincidence of numerous

circumstances resulted in its special taste. All we need is the exceptionally rich volcanic soil, the favourably located slopes, the steamy autumn mornings caused by the Tisza and the Bodrog Rivers, the barrels made from the local oak trees, the stone cellars with their walls covered in noble mould and, of course, the expertise of the win-emakers, and we get the Tokaj wine, ‘the wine of kings, king of wines’ as King Louis XIV, the Sun King dubbed the wine. The products of the region’s winemakers have been awarded with several gold and silver medals at different world competitions.

Over the centuries, different ethnic groups arrived here, including Armenians, Jews, Swabians and Polish, who have all enriched the region with their religions, architec-ture and traditions. This is why the century-old cellars,

the historic buildings, the excellent wines and the picturesque landscape provide visitors with a truly

unique experience. It was the combination of all these values that qualified the region with its 27 settlements, including Tokaj itself, to become one of the World Heritage sites. The town of Tokaj gained its present look in the 19th century, when the houses of Greek mer-chants were built near what is Kossuth Square today. Their gates still bear the emblems of the long-gone traders. This was the time when the palaces in Kossuth Square and the Arany Sas Pen-sion were erected to form a separate square in the early 20th century, with the addition of a Roman

Catholic church. A particular feature of the town is the

synagogue built in the late 19th

century, which is a cultural and conference centre today, with the adjacent Paulay Ede Theatre offering a series of entertaining performances. The most famous buildings of the small town are its cellars. The system of cellars that lies below the present town is several centuries old; some of them were used to store wine as early as between the 15th and the 16th century. The centrally located Rákóczi Cellar stands out in significance; according to the legend, it was in this cellar that János Szapolyai was crowned king in 1526.Of all the neighbouring settlements, Tokaj has the most important traditions connected to the culture of wine. The harvest was already celebrated with razzle-dazzle and dances even in the 18th century, and students from the area marched the streets of Tokaj during the days of the harvest from the early 19th century singing wine songs and parading with the statue of Bacchus. The harvest march and festival evolved from this tradition, which at-tracts several hundreds of thousands of guests to town year after year. Even those arriving in town in other times of the year will not be disappointed since a series of festivals and wine-tasting events take place throughout the year.

The major wineries were built on the vineyard-covered hills of the wine-growing region, such as Tokaj Disznókő Vineyard and Cellarage, Tokaj Hétszőlő, Tokaj Oremus Vineyard and Cellarage and Tokaj Merchant House await-ing wine tasters with different Tokajis in their cellars. The rivers Tisza and Bodrog attract kayakers with a number of waterway routes. In addition to their cellars, the settle-ments hidden among the local hills have further attrac-tions to lure the interested visitors. It is worth visiting the gallery in Tarcal and the Mu-seum of Hungarian Motorcycles in Bodrogkeresztúr. Mád boasts with an 18-century completely restored syna-gogue, the stone store and the building of the former cooperative bank, today a hotel. The town of Szerencs, situated in the gate of the wine-growing region, brought a new colour to the economy of the area as it was here that the one-time largest sugar factory and refinery of Europe opened in

1889, and somewhat later, the chocolate plant, too. The town has the world’s third largest, globally renowned sugar museum. Two kings were elected within the walls of the medieval castle, whose collection of nearly one million postcards—the third of its kind in the world—is really worth visiting. The old secession spa is also being recuperated in Szerencs.

The Gönc and Szerednye barrels, typical of the Tokaj region, are still made using the ancient traditions in the cooper workshops of Erdőbénye. The mansions of Tolcsva are from the 17th to 19th centuries and its Ro-man Catholic church was built in Gothic style in the 14th century.

Sárospatak is renowned for playing a major role in the regions history. This was the birthplace of Saint Elisa-beth of the House of Árpád, daughter of King End re II in 1207. Its castle was occupied by the Rákóczis; or at anoth-er time Hungary’s rst major poet, Bálint Balassi fought among its walls, but it was also the venue of a national

assembly. Northern Hungary’s largest Gothic hall church stands in the street of the outer castle, and the 16-metre tall Baroque high altar is the largest wooden altar in the country. Most of the settlements converted to the Reformed Church in the 1500’s. The spreading of the new faith was promoted by the Reformed College of Sárospa-tak, which played an outstanding role in shaping the intellectual and religious identity of the region. Its library treasures the largest church collection in Hungary. The House of Culture was built in 1983, based on the plans of Imre Makovecz. In IBA week of Architecture, 1985, Cairo, the building was awarded with the title of the ‘ fth most beautiful and most valuable building in the world’.

Sátoraljaújhely used to be the capital of the historical Zemplén County. The building of the former county hall houses the Zemplén Archive, the first archi-vist of which was Ferenc Kazinczy, the reformer of the Hungarian language. Lajos Kossuth, the leader of the 1948/49 War of Independence, studied in the old Piarist school and worked in the town for a short time after finishing his studies. Many people make a pilgrimage to the grave of Moses Teitelbaum, the magic rabbi. The longest chairlift in the country was built on Magas Hill, which towers above the town. In winter the hill attracts skiers and invites hikers from spring to autumn.

The village of Bányácska—situated a few kilometres away from Sátoraljaújhely—was renamed Széphalom by Ferenc Kazinczy, who had the family mansion built in this settlement. After Kazinczy’s death, the place soon became a pilgrimage destination for writers, poets, linguists and scientists, who all visited the writer’s grave, locat-ed in the garden of the mansion. To honour the great man, they erected a church hall. The castles in Northern Hungary are among the most popular tourist destina-

tions. Several romantic castle ruins await travellers on the peaks of the Zemp lén Hill, accessible on foot, by bi-cycle, motorbike or car as part of a family outing. The best-known castles are those of Boldogkőváralja, Regéc and Füzér. The latter is arguably the most beautifully situated fortress in the country.

The main attraction of Füzérradvány is the ro-mantic Károlyi Palace. Hollóháza is internationally ap-preciated for its famous porcelain products. It is worth visiting the Porcelain Museum next to the factory. An-other village hiding among the hills of the Zemplén is Vizsoly, where the first complete Hungarian version of the Bible was printed, and its fort-church is quite unique. Gönc is famous for its cooper masters, and this is where you can see the only remaining so-called Hus-site house. Telkibánya preserves the memories of the medieval gold mining, and it is the paradise of the min-eral collectors. The new Abaúj Museum displays memo-ries from many rural areas. The local forests attract hunters and restaurants offer varied delicacies prepared from game.
