David Scotter Principal PPP app Last term some families experienced issues with the absence recording system through the Primary Parent Planner app. We apologise for any inconvenience this caused. We have been in communication with the providers and they have explained that the issues are related to individual devices, not the system. They have advised parents to use the 'app support' tab in the app to reach out to them for assistance if you are experiencing any problems. Australian Girls choir open day Congratulations to the girls who recently took part in the AGC assessment workshop last term. By now you should have received your personalised assessment report – either posted to your home or via school. Everyone is welcome to come along to an Open Day on either Sunday October 28 (in Beecroft and Waverley) or Saturday November 3 (in Caringbah), which will give girls the opportunity to try a complimentary class and attend an information session. I’m sure you are aware, as the children (and teachers) can hardly contain their excitement… Our Milson Island Camp is just under 6 weeks away! The final instalment is due Thursday 8 November. Thank you to those families who have paid already. We are still waiting on some Medical and Consent forms. For those who have not yet done this, could you please complete the form online at https://sportandrecreation.nsw.gov.au/facilities/medicalandconsentform . You will need to use the following details when submitting your child’s information. Booking Number: 538030 Booking Start Date: 3/12/2018 Booking Venue: Milson Island Sport and Recreation Centre. The camp needs this information ASAP to ensure our children are well looked after.

The parent information sheet can be found online at https://sportandrecreation.nsw.gov.au/facilities/schools/parent . This provides details for parents and children about what to pack, what sort of facilities the children will have, medical information and more. We ask that you allow the children to do most of the packing and just assist where necessary to promote higher independence.

A few students are a bit anxious about attending camp (with nights away from home, medical issues or special sleeping conditions being the major concerns). This is totally normal. Please be assured that we are very understanding of any issues and will do everything we can to make sure every child has a wonderful camp experience. As we have said before, it is not only a very enjoyable excursion for all children who attend, but also an important social experience that can greatly aid independence and maturity. We are looking forward to three fun and exciting days of camp! Mrs Priscilla Wright Assistant Principal (Relieving) Stage 2

School student bus transport applications for 2019 open from Monday, 15 October 2018. Students progressing to Year 3 and Year 7 do not need to re-apply if they:

· are continuing at the same school · are residing at the same address · have not been sent an expiry notification from Transport for NSW.

Where a student meets the new distance eligibility, the system will automatically update their entitlement. If they do not meet the new eligibility, they will receive an expiry notification. Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition which is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply. Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.

If students need to update their information or re-apply, they should go online to https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updateDetails

Applications need to be submitted before 31 December 2018 to ensure student entitlements are updated and their current entitlement/card is not cancelled. If their application is submitted after 31 December 2018, the system will automatically cancel a card and a new one will need to be issued. Students in the Opal network applying for a SSTS or Term Bus Pass entitlement for the first time will receive their card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out during December 2018 and January 2019.

CRICKET GALA DAY Milo T20 Blast School Cup

On Tuesday 23 October, the Stage 3 girls’ cricket team travelled to Lindfield Oval to participate in the Sydney North T20 Blast finals. After battling the treacherous Sydney morning traffic, our 9 cricketers (Lulu R, Tiana S, Ivy A, Ruby L, Zoe D, Chloe B, Malie G, Hayley F, Chelsea R) and their fan club (Mrs Ryals and Mrs Robertson) arrived at the picturesque Lindfield Oval ready to dominate the competition. Once again, Mr James’ anti-rain dance produced the goods (sorry farmers) and we had a belter of a day on our hands. The early morning dew had the potential to be a problem as the outfield would run slow and the ball would be like a bar of soap. The girls knew they had to hit high and sacrifice their shirts to dry the ball. We started Round 1 off brilliantly, completely outclassing our opponents who were in absolute all sorts from the get-go. I did feel slightly bad for the other team as they ended the day winless and with not much to show for it. The girls were in high spirits after successfully negotiating the bye, but knew our next matchup would be much tougher. Round 2 saw us matched against our rivals from the Pittwater carnival, Mona Vale. We played extremely positively all game and produced moments of excellent cricket, however it was not enough to get past a very talented Mona Vale side. We ended up going down 135-68. Highlight of the game was Zoe’s outstanding catch and an even better face-plant trying to save a boundary later in the game. Round 3 was a must win for the girls to have any chance of featuring in the finals and the girls put on an absolute clinic in a hard fought and very close game. Our excellent bowling and fielding saw us clinch a narrow 93-80 win. Highlight of the game was Lulu’s monstrous 6 which Mr James managed to catch on film. After a break for lunch we entered the high catch competition. Wheeler Heights had Lulu and Chloe participating and the girls looked cool, calm and collected under the high ball. Unfortunately the girls bowed out early on, but should be very proud of their efforts. This brought us to the main attraction for the day – the teacher high catch competition! They made it very difficult for us, with each ball returning to the field with snow on it. When all was said and done, Mr James walked away with a very respectable 3rd place, much to the delight of the team – thanks for cheering! It was now time for the finals! With multiple teams sitting on the same points, the umpires had to resort to averages to decide on the teams that would make it through. Luckily, Wheeler Heights just snuck through in 4th place and were set to face the undefeated Queenwood – with the winner progressing through to the Sydney Metropolitan Finals. Our girls saved their best game until last, with some amazing cricket being played. However, the girls from Queenwood were just too good on the day, winning the final 136-95. Highlight of the game was Ivy’s 2 wickets in an over, both being caught by Hayley. Overall, we had an outstanding day out with every girl following the Wheeler Way and being excellent role models for our school. I know you will continue your great form in the remaining PSSA rounds. Additionally, thank you to our TA Tammi for helping throughout the day and to all the parents who drove out to the ground! Without you these days cannot happen. Yours in cricket, Mr James

INVICTUS GAMES

On the 23rd October, the Year 6 House Captains went to the Invictus Games accompanied by Mrs Young and Mr Bennett. Also in attendance, were the sports captains from the other member schools of The PCS (Peninsula Community of Schools). The Invictus Games is an international adaptive multi-sport event, created by Prince Harry, in which wounded, injured or sick armed services personnel and their associated veterans take part in sports including wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, and indoor rowing. The impairments that these amazing people have can make it much harder to swim, run, ride a bike and it can even make everyday tasks a lot harder. It was very inspirational for everyone involved. As House Captains, we were amazed at the incredible talent on show and how despite facing many barriers, the athletes rose to every challenge. After an early start from Mona Vale, we arrived at ANZ Stadium at 7.00am. The Peninsula Community of Schools (PCS) went into the stadium and sat down with at least fifty other public schools. After the acknowledgement of country, we travelled to the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre, where we viewed the first Invictus Swimming Heats. We were in complete awe as we watched people with various physical and mental injuries completing challenges that most people would deem impossible. The word Invictus means ‘unconquered’ and we were able to see that spirit in abundance at The Aquatic Centre. When the Invictus Swimming was over, we headed down next to ANZ Stadium for lunch. After that, we listened to an inspirational speaker Lorin Nicholson who opened by performing an incredible guitar solo. It became even more impressive when he then told us that he was legally blind and could only see 6% of his surroundings. Lorin is an incredibly funny man and told us of his problems when he was growing up and how with the help of family and friends he overcame them. One of the most memorable stories he told us was about when, at the age of 16, he rode his bike from his home in Tamworth over the Great Dividing Range to get to the beach. He rode 275 km over 3 days and still managed to push his way up every mountain. He showed us that with hard work and belief, we are able to achieve anything. Everyone enjoyed the trip and to top it off we got free Invictus Games hats, sunglasses, wristbands, bags and posters. We returned to school very inspired and ready to take on the challenges the year ahead may bring.

From house captains Ashton D & Ethan M

Today the P&C had a coffee van come to the school for an hour in honour of World Teachers Day. We hope they all enjoyed a small token of our appreciation for all of their continued hard work.

WHPS P&C President’s Report 2017/2018

Welcome to the Wheeler Heights Public School Annual General Meeting. Thank you all for coming. This year we’ve had myself as President, Vice Presidents, Simone Sakovits and JC Camelin, Matt Soltau as Treasurer and Paul Hardy as Secretary. The subcommittees had a few changes this past year. Currently there is no canteen or band convenor (however Anthony MacDermott has still been overseeing Band), Sherene LeGasse with Fundraising and Uniform Co-convenors - Karen Nitch and Simone Sakovits. The sub committee’s reports will follow. Over the past 12 months thanks to the subcommittees, we have raised funds that have been committed or presented to the school to assist with partial payments for the installation of solar panels, purchase of a defibrillator and have committed to contribute to the installation of artificial grass. The following is a list of the P&C activities that we have held.

Page 8: Term 4 Wk 2 Thurs 25 October - Wheeler Heights · 2019. 10. 10. · Thurs 29 Nov Yr 5 Leadership speeches . Fri 30 Nov PSSA . Mon –Wed Dec 3-5 Yr 4 Camp to Milson Island . Tues

In 2017 - Trivia night - I did an incoming welcoming to the kindergarten families at orientation - Uniform shop did a fashion parade for the incoming kindergarten families, again at orientation - Hosted the Christmas BBQ/Carols/Band performance as well as thank you gifts to the outgoing families that have

contributed to the P&C - Christmas gifts to the teachers and support staff in recognition of their hard work

In 2018

- Hosted the welcome BBQ for new and kindy families and year 6 buddies - Had the rotary raffle sale, Sherene and I went along with David for the drawing of the winning ticket which was quite

exciting - Canteen has had the entertainment books for sale - Canteen also is now running as a no waste canteen, everything is recyclable and reused - Mother’s Day and Father’s Day breakfast, both providing the most amount of positive feedback we get, thanks to

Sherene’s efforts in coordinating both the food and volunteers - The uniform shop removed gender specific labelling in both the shop and online - We accepted the resignation of Marina Barker from the uniform shop, Min was a longstanding employee as well as a huge

contributor to volunteering her time to the school. She will be missed. - I appointed Karen Nitch as her replacement - I was on the interview panel for the hiring of a new permanent staff member

Internet banking has remained a relatively easy process, streamlining our banking and bill paying capabilities. It is always a concern though that often volunteers need to purchase food/gifts out of their own pockets and be reimbursed. I feel that this needs to be addressed again and look at alternative ways we can do this. Credit cards aren’t suitable however store credits/gift cards might work. This will hopefully be explored further over the next few months. We had Emma Barr present to us the effects of blue light on computers and discussed the free program IRIS. The solar panels are now up and running and Derek Mascarenhas was successful in approaching the council to change the access to WHPS from Augusta Shops (the project will start at the end of the year). Volunteers is an ongoing concern, it’s always the same few hands that contribute. Many hands make light work so we are always looking at ways to get new families involved in contributing some of their valuable time to the school. Finally, thank you all for your continued service to volunteering your time to the school, in particular to the P&C. Your continued efforts, time, knowledge and hard work that you all apply to your positions ensures that we will continue to have a strong and successful and enjoyable P&C team. Regards, Natalie Cook WHPS P&C President CANTEEN NEWS Blokes Day was a great success with a host of dads working hard in the canteen. They cooked nearly 200 sausages and completed loads of food prep work, dishes and cleaning. The canteen really appreciates their hard work and looks forward to the next one. A special thank you to the following dads: Simon, Nial, Josh, Derek and Anthony.

The system allows you to change or cancel your shift if your commitments change and it will send a confirmation email of the date and time you signed up for, as well as a reminder so you don't forget nearer the time. Alternatively you can email the canteen on [email protected] or SMS 0427 174472 with your shift availability, full name and email address so we can sign you up for email notifications.

Annual Trivia Night is Coming Soon! November 10

Our biggest fundraiser for the school year is just around the corner and we need your help to make it amazing. This year the monies raised will be going to a variety of upgrades to the

school grounds, new readers, iPads, Solar Panels and so much more.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! CALLING ON ALL BUSINESS OWNERS!

It’s great when our school community owned businesses get involved by either donating a prize or sponsoring a table. We like to offer our school families the first opportunity for sponsorship. However, if this isn’t possible all you need to do is think of someone you know who can donate something for the night – vouchers, gifts, services, in fact we can pretty much use anything to raise money to help make our school even better than it already is. If you own your own business or know of someone who does we are also offering “naming rights” for tables which, for a small fee ($200.00 tax deductible) is a great way of getting your business name out there. All businesses that make a contribution receive acknowledgement in the school newsletter, logo inclusion on the night’s slide show, mentions on the night and ability to distribute merchandise and business cards. Silent Auction prizes are another must for any fundraising event. Sporting memorabilia, hotels, trips, tours and pretty much anything with substantial value that will make the attendees spend up big on the night. There are plenty of very talented people in our school community and we would love it if you could turn your hand to making something for us to use at the silent or live auction or as a prop on the night - please let us know. Last year we received a great response from our school community businesses and we’re sure we can do the same this year.

If you have any questions or want to donate or help the committee please call Sherene LaGasse 0427 174472 or email [email protected].

BAND NEWS JAZZ BAND BONANZA The WHPS Jazz Band’s appearance on Monday 1 October 2018 at the Manly Jazz Festival was almost faultless. What an amazing gig! In an accomplished performance of almost all of its repertoire, the Jazz Band once again justified its place on the John Speight Stage, in the heart of the Manly Corso, at the centre of the jazz universe. The band was lucky to have an adult “ring-in” on the day - Greg on Trumpet. Greg complimented the band on its high level of professionalism. The band’s unique character shone through. The generous applause of a healthy and spirited audience gave much needed self-confidence to a band that is quickly growing in sophistication and maturity. Thanks to Shauna and Mr Scotter for their appearance on the day to help with logistics. Thanks also to the parents who lugged our extra gear to and from the gig. BIGGEST WHPS BAND PROGRAM IN HISTORY!! As if we needed more to do…we’ve added approximately another 35 band members to our program and kicked off the “Preliminary Band”. After a mammoth effort by Shauna and a number of dedicated volunteers, our new Preliminary Band (i.e. next year’s Training Band) start next week with their weekly sectional rehearsals. As usual this has been a complicated process, starting with recruitment last term and concluding next week as our new excited band members get handed their instruments and start their group lessons in their instrument categories. We welcome our new band members with open arms and look forward to the challenges of helping them shine on their new musical adventure. Thanks to all those helpers who made this happen, once again. BIG BAND BOOM – JAZZ BAND @ PITTWATER RSL This is a real jazz band gig, to be held on Sunday 11 November (in the afternoon). Bringing together around 11 different local Primary School, High School and Regional stage bands, this will be a special afternoon dedicated to throwing our young local jazz and stage band musicians to the fore. Featuring the likes of the Arts North Big Band and the Brass Baton Big Band (James Hill’s crème de la crème big band) the afternoon promises all the energy, swagger and discipline of contemporary big bands, all for the enjoyment and development of our local young big band musicians and their supporters. Our jazz musicians will be performing in a quality live music venue, one of the few remaining of its kind on the Northern Beaches. This is a great opportunity for our young big bands to watch and listen to other bands, all in a “jazz club” setting away from the musty old school hall!

CONGRATULATIONS Well done to Eleanor D who conquered her Grade 1 flute exam in style by achieving an A! Congratulations, keep up the great work! Send us your results: We know many band children have recently and courageously sat exams on their instruments. Please let us know the results so we can pass it on! Even just preparing for and sitting an exam is an accomplishment in itself. All results are to be celebrated. NSSWE AUDITIONS For those who are interested in extending themselves NSSWE is a fun, extra-curricular wind ensemble program which explores and develops a love of music amongst young musicians. NSSWE is now recruiting young brass, woodwind and percussion students to join one of our four age-related wind ensembles in 2019. Students from Years 4 to 12 with the enthusiasm and drive to excel in their chosen instrument are invited to audition with them over the weekend of 11 and 12 November. NSSWE welcomes students who are involved in their school band program, from both public and private schools across the Northern Sydney region. This year, NSSWE members represent schools from Hornsby to Manly, Turramurra to Avalon. Please visit NSSWE’s site for more information: nsswe.org.au Registrations close on 28 October 2018. GET READY FOR MUSICALE… It’s time for all band members to start thinking about this annual event which takes place, for each band, later in the term. “Musicale” is a band event, held in the School Hall (across the usual afternoon rehearsal times), at which the band plays a few pieces interspersed with some wonderful solos. Everyone is encouraged to perform a short solo piece! Start practising now! Musicale gives our performers helpful experience at overcoming anxiety and developing confidence. So please don’t get anxious about this gig, the audience is always warm and encouraging. This is also a great opportunity for parents, friends and conductors to celebrate the musical development of our kids! This event is to be held on 21 November (Training Band) and 22 November (Senior and Intermediate Bands) across the ordinary afternoon rehearsal times. BAND COMMITTEE REBOOT The Annual General Meeting for the WHPS Band Committee is to be held on Monday 12 November in the school staffroom. The AGM will commence at 7pm, to be followed by a regular monthly meeting of the Band Committee. An agenda will be sent out shortly. All Committee positions will be declared vacant and elections held to form the Committee for 2018/19. While some of our existing Committee members may be willing to stand for positions again for the year ahead, a number of our Committee members will be leaving the school at the end of the year (or, indeed, have already left). It is always important for the Band Committee to integrate new members each year so that experience and jobs can be shared around and keep our Band Program going strong. Please remember that all of the work done by our Band Committee is on a purely voluntary basis. The success of our Band Program is largely due to the work done by a variety of parents to keep things running smoothly every week, sharing jobs around. Some of our Committee members and regular parent helpers provide valuable assistance at rehearsals and school time

performances, others provide important support behind the scenes, and many help out for our weekend events. If you would like to become more involved but you are not sure how you can contribute, please come along to a rehearsal, a meeting, or contact the Committee for more information. No musical talent/experience is necessary! Thank you for your support of the Band Program.

Proposed Mobile Phone Tower at the RSL War Veterans Village

RSL Lifecare (the War Vets) have lodged a DA to construct a 40m high mobile phone tower at 1 Lakeshore Drive, Narrabeen, within 150m of neighbouring properties and close to a local preschool and primary schools. If built, this would be as high as the new Northern Beaches Hospital.

Of great concern to the surrounding residents is the electromagnetic radiation (EMR) emanating from the tower which the World Health Authority has classed as a 2B possible human carcinogen and in particular the low level long term exposure to the surrounding residents and schools.

Whilst we are told by Telstra that the radiation levels are in accordance with ARPANSA levels, there is now mounting evidence from overseas that these guidelines are inadequate in protecting the health of human populations, and in particular, children, who are more susceptible to these emissions. They have also been found to be harmful to local wildlife, birds and insect colonies.

The Tower is not in keeping with the local environment, it is grossly oversized and would be an ugly blight on an otherwise beautiful suburb well known for its stunning natural features and wildlife. It is entirely inappropriate for this area.

You can lodge a submission against the DA 2018/1481 on the Northern Beaches Council website below:

HELP NEEDED FOR NEXT FEDERAL ELECTION

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is asking residents to sign up to help deliver the next federal election in the Mackellar electorate.

The electoral division of Mackellar covers an area of 233km2 and contains 42 polling places that will be staffed by 519 paid temporary electoral workers on election day. The AEC needs to fill all those positions to ensure the election runs smoothly.

While the date for the next election is not yet known, the AEC is asking people to register their interest in working now.

Election work is a thoroughly rewarding experience and a great opportunity to contribute to the local area. To be eligible, you must be an Australian citizen and over the age of 18 years.

All temporary election roles are paid and full training is provided.

So, register your interest today to be considered for work when the next federal election is called. Registrations of interest must be submitted online.

For more information or to register your interest, visit www.aec.gov.au/working-at-elections
