Issue 9 31 May 2019 AMAZING— CRAZY HAIR, FREE DRESS DAY! Thank you to our school community for their generosity last Friday when the Student Council held their Free Dress Day for Chaplaincy Week. The Student Council raised $435.00 for our Chaplaincy program. Thank you to everyone and con- gratulations to our Student Council and Mrs Murphy for their willingness to organize the Crazy Hair Day.SCHOOL MUSICAL As you know from our last newsletter the Musical for 2019 is: Cinderella Rockerfella. It was last produced in 2015, so none of our Students in Years 4-6 would have been part of the Musical. The Musical will involve students from Years 4-6. During the Week of 17th June we will be conducting auditions for the major speaking parts for the school musi- cal and will announce which students have these parts at the end of this Term. I will then give those successful students an information sheet for their parents to read and sign, to say that they are willing to allow their child to participate in a Major Part of the musical. What this means is that they are agreeing to the commitment that is involved in being part of the musical. All Students in Years 4-6 have received a Musical note. 102 Students have already signed up!! If your child/ren wish to sign up please read this note carefully and return the permission form by the extended date, Wednesday 5 June. If you have not received the note you may collect a copy from the school office. The Musical Cinderella Rockerfellawill be presented at the HIGHFIELDS CULTURAL CENTRE on Thursday 19 September. As next Term progresses, there will be more notes about costumes and other requests for help sent home. We are very excited about our 10th Musical and know that you will really enjoy the production. EVERY DAY COUNTS School absenteeism and truancy can impact significantly on stu-dents' learning and wellbeing.

Research shows that in Queensland, higher student attendance is associated, on average, with higher student achievement. Addition-ally, attending school every day helps children to build social and emotional skills such as communication, teamwork and resilience.

Under the law, you must make sure your child is enrolled and at-tends school on all school days unless there is a reasonable ex-cuse. Schools must monitor attendance of students and follow up with parents and caregivers any unexplained absences

Please take the time to read the Department of Education’s “Regular School Attendance” flyer included at the end of this News-letter.

The wheelie bin located at the front of the school is our col-lection point for Newspapers. This is raising funds for sport-ing equipment etc. It is so easy to do - put your newspaper in the bins and the D&S Paper Company PAYS the school for the Newspapers. Many thanks to the families that are sending their newspaper to Fairview for recycling.

2019 Darling Downs Maths Team Challenge

Congratulations to the two teams of Year 5 & 6 students who represented Fairview at the recent Maths Challenge. There were 22 teams from the DDSW district competing in the Challenge! In the first part of the challenge, teams had to problem-solve a list of tricky maths problems. The second part of the chal-lenge was a relay, so students had to work in pairs as fast as they could to solve maths problems. To prepare for the challenge, the Fairview students worked with Mrs Murphy before school every day for a couple of weeks. The enthusiasm the students showed for learning was inspiring and it was a great way to start the school day! Results: Team B came a respectable 15

th place overall; and

Team A came 7th overall. Well done!!!

Team A: Savannah Parry, Angelina Rittmeyer (Reserve), Daniel Purdy, Aariah Smith, Harry Young (Captain) Insert: Zane Schefe

Team B: Noah Butler (Captain), Luke Miller, Ella Morgan, Ewan Mortimer & Riley Becker.

Farewell to one of our Fairview Families who are off on a BIG adventure travelling around Australia in a converted Stonestreets Bus! Yesterday they came to show their friends their new home and to say goodbye…. then they hit the road!!

Literacy Pro students have read over 26 million words this year and have completed 4 390 quizzes!! Our pass rate of quizzes is only at 77% at the moment so let’s aim to get it above 80%. How can a Literacy Pro Student help get the pass rate high-er? By reading the book carefully, doing a quiz immediately after reading and not just doing a quiz because you read the book a long time ago! Let’s keep reading and passing the quizzes! Can we get 5 million words read in the next 3 weeks?? I wonder!!

Big Write In 1/2W we are working on our writing. Each week we take home a picture for Big Talk. We talk about the picture with our family to think of ideas for our writing. We try to think of exciting WOW words and openers to use to make our writing more interesting. When we write we have calming music and magic candles to help us concentrate and write great stories. We love Big Write.

Year One are embracing the cold by getting comfy and reading for enjoyment. We have been exercising our imagination through story and picture and taking the time to talk about the stories we have read. We have been reading quietly to ourselves, listening to stories from our teachers and storyline online as well as shar-ing our favourite books with our friends. Reading helps develop sounds, words and language knowledge, improving literacy and learning outcomes for each and every student. Reading has so much value, whether it is learning to be curious, learning the difference between ‘real’ and ‘make believe’, understanding change, big life events and feelings. We encourage every family to read for fun. Easy and cheap ways to do this is through our school library as well as the Toowoomba town library on Herries Street. Storyline online created by the SAG-AFTRA foundation is another great tool for busy families. This web page provides free storytell-ing videos, read by well-known actors and celebrities, of recently released children’s books as well as our old favourites, there’s hundreds to choose from. Don’t forget there is always the scholastic Book Club out this week that offers cheap books and delivers straight to the class room. Who doesn’t like reading through the Book Club brochure and circling what we want? Happy reading from Year 1. 1F Toni Montefiore
