The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.Psalm 121:5-6 Many times in the Psalms, God is referred to as "shade" and the Bi- ble speaks of us under the "shadow of his wings" (Psalm 63:7). This image is a powerful one when you consider the heat and sun of the land of Israel being not unlike the hot conditions of Australia, especially in the mountains near Jerusalem where many days the temperature can get above 40. It is interesting to see how in Psalm 121, it speaks of the sun "smiting" us, the same word also trans- lated as "to hit, attack, or strike down". In ancient times, it was thought that just as the sun was the source of heat that "attacks" us by day, the moon is the source of cold that "attacks" us by night. So when God led his people in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, God was sheltering them from the ever-present enemies of cold and heat in the desert. With this better un- derstanding of the great need for the cool of shade, which was a picture of protection by God, we can better ap- preciate Psalm 121 as well as many others. Psalm 91:1-2 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.Steven Nicholas. PARENT / STUDENT SURVEYS

It is that time of the year again. We will be send-ing out instructions for you to complete the parent surveys in approximately one week. Students from Years 5 – 10 will be required to complete the survey anonymously at school. It is a govern-ment requirement that we all take this opportunity to review and answer these surveys. Your assis-tance in this area is always appreciated. You will receive individual notification when it is all set up. This survey can only be completed online and is not available as a hardcopy. NAPLAN 2018 Next Tues. Wed. Thurs. Next week students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will take part in the National Assessment Program—Literacy and Numeracy or NAPLAN as it is com-monly known. Skills that will be tested will be reading, writing, language conventions including spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy. These tests are completed at school within time limits and are considered part of the curriculum program. Olivet uses the results of NAPLAN as one indicator of how students are meeting the learning requirements of the Australian Curriculum. It is important for parents and students to remem-ber that NAPLAN is not a pass/fail situation, but an opportunity for students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in certain areas of the curriculum. The best way for students to prepare for next week’s testing is to have adequate sleep before hand and during the week, and to have a good breakfast before coming to school. We trust that this will assist students to perform at their best on the testing days. Later in the year, parents will be given an individ-ual NAPLAN report that will identify how your child is progressing. More information can be ob-tained from the NAPLAN website. http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan SECONDARY SPORT This week for sport, the Secondaries will be stay-ing at school to play netball if it’s dry. If the weather is wet, we’ll be doing some indoor games.
