Grapevine - Term 4 Week 8 Thursday 6th December 2018 From the Principal’s desk…… Dear Parents, carers and community, It is with great pleasure that we inform you of the production of the inaugural Valentine Public School Yearbook’ . In 2018 this book will also serve in honouring 60 years of quality public education on our site. We are opening up pre-sales for this book within our community. It will also be on sale on Presentation Day. I would like to thank Miss Duck and her very clever Spelling Mastery group as they were able to complete their spelling program as well as help create this amazing snapshot of our school year. The book is a quality document, designed to stand the test of time, with colourful, glossy pages full of our amazing students at work and play. We have been working with MSP Photography to ensure a professional product for our lovely families. A note will come home today for pre-sales and the book will also be able to be purchased at our Administration during the last week of school. This week I would like to share a message with you from our Secretary DoE, Mark Scott. Today as we celebrate International Day of People with Disability I am delighted to announce the NSW Department of Education’s new Diversity and Inclusion Strategy 2018-2022. Respect for diversity is a core value of the department. If we are to be the best education sys- tem in Australia, we need to create a workplace that encourages and supports opportunities for employees of all backgrounds and life experience to achieve, succeed and be their best. Creativity and innovation will thrive if we all have opportunities to succeed, so we can do the best job we can for the students and communities of NSW. That’s why it’s important we embrace this strategy as we strive to prepare young people in our schools to lead rewarding a nd productive lives in a complex and dynamic world. Our new Diversity and Inclusion Strategy is for the 86,000 people who work for the department – and for the students and community we serve. What will we be doing? Over the next five years we commit to action in three priority areas: building a more inclusive workforce by raising awareness, understanding and engagement with diversity attracting, recruiting, developing and retaining a workforce which is more reflective of the community we serve, and strengthening the data and evidence we collect about our workforce so we can make more informed decisions and deliver sustainable initiatives. What are our targets? Our Diversity and Inclusion Strategy sets specific targets for a more diverse workforce in five focus areas: Aboriginal people people with disability culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) people women in leadership and male teachers We recognise that diversity extends beyond these areas, so we will aim to foster a more inclusive culture with respect to age, marital status, sexual orientation, educational level and socio-economic background. The first step is to establish a dedicated Diversity and Inclusion team within the department to scope what we need to do to reach the targets we have set within our timeframe. Find out more … I encourage you to visit the Education NSW intranet and find out more about the Diversity and Inclusion Strategy so we can help achieve our Strategic Plan goal that “Education is a great place to work and our workforce of the highest calibre”. Dear Parents/Caregivers, Over the next week you will receive a letter containing log in information for our new Sentral Parent Portal which will replace Skoolbag as of Term 1, 2019. Please read the instructions carefully to create your account attached to your child/ren. The note will be sent home with the oldest sibling. Sentral are currently completing upgrades to their mobile application over the summer holidays to ensure an easily transition and platform for all users. Sentral has been advised that you ‘skip’ the application setup clearly stated in Parent Portal letter. Once again thank you for your ongoing support. We are excited for what Sentral can offer us in terms of communication with parents with many more added benefits in the new year.

This week’s key sign… This Term we are learning to sign the alphabet.

P

OSHC news… MY TIME OUR PLACE Learning Outcome 5. Children are effective communicators Outcome 5.3: Children interact verbally and non-verbally with others for a range of purposes. Positive Behaviour for Learning – Connect We will provide opportunities for children to extend on their PBL focus, “connect”, by encouraging discussion around how we can connect with others and the environment. Interests and ideas will be documented for future program planning. Week 7: Last week at OSHC we enjoyed painting different patterns onto foil and seeing how the colours looked in different lighting. Our OSHC garden was in dire need of some TLC, so we worked as a team to weed and water it. We had lots of different construction available for children to play with, and some impressive skyscrapers were made! The children were able to play down at the oval and sandpit, as well as enjoy a variety of different ball games. Week 8: This week at Valentine OSHC we have some exciting things planned! The children will have the opportunity to make Christmas-themed photo frames, paper planes, collages, snowflakes and their very own comic excerpts. We will be challenging our handball skills by adding a second ball to the game! We will continue to provide plenty of opportunities for construction, cola play, sand pit play and oval play. Vacation Care is coming up fast! Join us on the 20th January for ”All things Christmas!”. Come dressed in your favourite Christmas clothes and experience cooking, craft, games, and a movie that are all about Christmas!

C-Pen Reader– Inclusive Learning… The C-Pen Reader is a major technological breakthrough for anyone learning English and for those who have reading difficulties such as dyslexia. The C-Pen Reader is a totally portable, pocket-sized device that reads text out aloud with an English human-like digital voice. All you need to do is highlight the typed text with the pen and it will read the sentence or word aloud. We currently have three of these pens in our school and they are being implemented in various classrooms. So far the feedback has been positive from both students and teachers.

Our School Vision:

At Valentine Public School, we apply a Growth Mindset to become globally connected, innovative and lifelong learners who embrace diversity and change.

National Athletics Championships... Last week our two superstar athletes Max and Sam travelled to Melbourne to represent VPS and NSW at the Australian All School Athletics Championships in Melbourne. The boys competed against athletes from all over Australia at the Lakeside Athletics stadium in Albert Park. Max and Sam both represented our school and NSW with great pride and sportsmanship and achieved exceptional results at such an elite level of competition. Max placed 2nd in Australia in the 11 years boys long jump and 9th in the high jump. Sam placed 10th in Australia the 11 years 200m and 8th in the 100m. In addition to their outstanding individual results, both boys had fantastic runs in the NSW relay teams. Sam as a member of the NSW 4 x 100m team won gold and Max won a silver medal in the NSW medley relay team. Fantastic effort from our VPS speed stars! Sam and Max had a fantastic time travelling and competing as part of the NSW team and have both made some new friends from around the state and country. We are so incredibly proud of the boys not just for their outstanding results but the exemplary way in which they have competed and represented VPS throughout the athletics season. Well done Max and Sam, you are champions!
