TERM 1 WEEK 3 OATLEY WEST LANTERN - The school by the park 10.2.2020
What a wonderful week meeting with Kinder-garten and watching them settle into school life and starting their new journey! Welcome to our new families of Kindergarten and any new families that have commenced school this year. NOVEL CORONAVIRUS Television, radio, internet and social media have all been impacting on our daily lives. I spoke to the students from Year 1 to Year 6 last week again about keeping healthy, mak-ing sure they are washing their hands after us-ing the toilet using their elbow to cough into and the fact that this virus could have emanat-ed from any country. While the news of this virus can be upsetting for many people it is im-portant that we work together to support those who have been in the impacted areas. Our families have been very sensible and self quarantined from the very beginning of the school year. It is important that we don’t as-sume people who have Chinese or other Asian background are linked to the spread of the Novel Coronavirus.
Anti-Asian language and behaviour, or any other form of racism is unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our school community. Staff continue to monitor our student health and wellness. Please be vigilant at home. STATIONERY DRIVE FOR BUSHFIRE AFFECTED SCHOOL We haven’t been assigned a school to support as yet, however the SRC students are keen to get this promotion started. There is a notice in this newsletter to request stationery items that will help a damaged school/s kick off their school year. If you think about what you need to start the school year that is what we would like to send. Many thanks to Ms Farah for organising this on behalf of our community.
I hope everyone survived the wild weekend. Power came on around 7.30. We have two trees down in the Caterpillar play-ground and lots of debris in the other play-grounds. This must have happened late yesterday afternoon or last night as I checked the school grounds on Sunday around 1.00pm., and all was well. Thanks to our cleaning staff and GA Mr Eric for cleaning up and ensuring everything was safe for us to start school today.
DID YOU KNOW THAT OWPS HAS ARCOs?
What is an ARCO? ARCO stands for Anti-Racism Contact Officer. The NSW Department of Education rejects all forms of racism and is committed to the elimination of ra-cial discrimination. An ARCO is the contact be-tween students, staff, parents and community members who wish to make a complaint regard-ing racism. Their responsibility is to ensure that appropriate procedures be implemented to re-solve the complaint, and the person who will have responsibility for dealing with the complaint - the delegate, is included.
What is racism? The Human Rights Commission defines racism as follows: ‘Racism can take many forms, such as jokes or comments that cause offence or hurt, sometimes unintentionally; name-calling or verbal abuse; harassment or intimidation, or commentary in the media or online that inflames hostility towards certain groups. At its most serious, racism can re-sult in acts of physical abuse and violence.’

Many thanks to our wonderful parents, Angel D, Lily W and Tina Y who volunteered to process School banking deposits last Thursday. Can you volunteer? - We need your help with the School Banking program! Our students really enjoy participating in the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program and to keep this program running we need your help. The program requires a volunteer School Bank-ing Co-ordinator to facilitate the banking and distribution of School Banking rewards. The School Banking is processed at the same time each week and will only takes a small amount of your time. The Commonwealth Bank will pro-vide support in how to run the program. Your help with the program will greatly benefit stu-dents as they develop vital saving skills and also help our school with fundraising.
